I came across this video to reassure myself I was doing everything correctly. Melanie explained each step to make it easy to follow. I was blown away to read the comments after watching the video and then watched the video of her journey dealing with cancer. Was so sorry to hear that she lost that battle after all she went through. She looks like she was an amazing person and we need amazing people in this world. Thank you to her family for continuing to share her videos and her beautiful smile. God bless
I came back to this tutorial to remember how to make this envelope case only to discover that this lovely woman had earned her wings. I'm really beside myself right now. I pray that the family is healing from the loss.
I confess I re-watch her videos in many cases just to hear hear her voice and see her beautiful face. I learned to sew during the pandemic using her videos and they are my home base. I am so very grateful they are still here and I try to buy from her affiliates whenever I need something.🙏💕
Was searching envelope pillow cover tutorials and this video came up. Thinking of Melanie and her family. Thank you for keep her content available. Always such great instructions.
Hello Totes Galore, I'm 67 years and also needed a refresher. On the up side now with utube and all the knowledge at our finger tips learning is so much easier. Enjoy & blessings.
Yes, I am away from home and needed a quick reminder since I don't have my sewing books here. I usually overlap the back two pieces a little more so no gap with the puffy pillow form peeking out... Thanks for your tutorial. Dawn from Florida and Penna 😊
Every time I make an envelope pillow cover I think of Melanie. I make many pillow covers for my family. She was such an inspiration to the crafting community.
I've recently purchased a sewing machine and hadn't used one since leaving school decades ago. I am pleased to say I have managed to do a trial run and hemmed up some net curtains.........and.......I have made a pair of envelope cushions using this tutorial. I am so shocked that I have turned out such a beautiful item that I made myself. Thank you Melanie, you have inspired me to have more confidence in myself as a sewer/machinist.
I am so sad at the passing of Melanie. This video taught me so much. I taught myself to sew from RUclips videos and this video taught me how to make cushions which I sell. Thank you Melanie 💗
Every time I watch one of Melanie's videos, I think of her family and friends. I hope and pray you find comfort in keeping these wonderful videos going. We are so lucky to have this legacy.
I had zero confidence in my sewing abilities. I recently retired and decided to make an effort to learn to sew. After struggling with my machine (couldn't get the needle threaded-such a little hole, had to figure out how to thread the bobbin, etc.), I cut up my old robe and set out to sew a pillow cover. Hubby said, "Go to Joann Fabrics and buy some fabric." I said, "No way. I'm not going to waste money on good fabric so I can ruin it!" It took me a while, but when I finished, it looked pretty darned good. It gave me the confidence to make a second pillow cover. Thank you for showing me step-by-step how to make an envelope pillow cover!
My condolences to the family. This was the first video I ever saw that helped me sew this kind of pillow cover. I haven’t sewn in a few years and I remembered this video and her name to help me again. Thank you to Melanie’s family for keeping her videos up and going. Peace and comfort to you.
I know this is an old video but I LOVE it and whenever I need to make a pillow cover, this is my definite go -to video. Thanks so much, Melanie!! You are my earth angel!!
This is a perfect video to share with my granddaughter who just bought a beginner sewing machine and we can work on making pillow cases together. Thanks.
For all of you asking back piece measurements: if you click on "more", then click on her blog, the instructions for figuring out your back pieces are there. Basically is your front piece is 16X16, your back pieces will be 16X12 (each). You take the 16", add 8 then divide answer by 2 to get measurement of each back piece. Hope that helps.
Thank you so much for teaching me how to do this. I just made 3 pillows for each of my grandchildren for Easter. All in 1 night and I haven't sewn for years. My sisters got me a new sewing machine for my birthday and this was my first project. They turned out great. Happy Easter!
I have a tip. When sewing around the corners, kind of round them off instead of making a perfect right angle turn. This eliminates the look of pointing ears at each corner.
Tobywinter I learned this trick long ago and it's AMAZING for making sharp corners. Just a couple 45 degree angle stitches in the corner and BOOM perfect corner!!😊
Thanks for the great instructions! It's so nice to see someone your age that knows how to sew-I thought it was a lost art. My grandmother and aunty taught me to sew when I was a teenager and I've used that skill throughout my life. I'm 51 now and think of them every time I start a new project.
Fantastic video and excellent, easy-to-follow directions. My teenage daughter, who sewed one blanket once years ago, wanted a project she could make for a teacher gift. This was it. Perfect. Thank you for the simple instructions and the dimensions for determining measurements not given.
Hi Lauren, For a 27 x 27 you need (1) 28 x 28 (1) 28 x 19 (1) 28 x 17 Those back measurements can be adjusted a bit, but you need to have at least 6 inches of overlap and leave enough for the small seam.
Melanie, thank you for the easy instructions on the envelope pillow. I found the measurements extremely helpful. I haven't made anything from scratch in about 10 years so even though I was an experienced seamstress, my skills are very rusty. Making this simple project saved me money because I had pillow forms sitting in the closet for some ten years and I finally used them and then I covered some pillows for a change of decor. I have made 5 pillows this afternoon. Thanks also for allowing me to experience the joys of sewing that I haven't had in a very long time. Janet Cswercko, FL.
This tutorial will work better with the 51 cm x 51 cm pillow form you currently have. I use inches so, I'm not sure what your seam allowance is. But 51 cm is almost exactly 20 inches. You basically need to add in your seam allowance all the way around and the back needs to have 6-8 inches of overlap - its forgiving. Read the description box for more details! Thanks for watching and stopping by!
Thank you for these instructions. I am a new sewer - haven’t gone near a machine since I was a kid. I want to make a pillow using some crewel-stitching as the front and have purchased some toning fabric but really didn’t know where to start. Your video is really helpful as is your website.
I so thankful I found Melanie! She was literally the first utube I found and has taught me and my friends how to quilt and sew. I love and miss her very much ❤️💔
+Melanie Ham You said the fabric should be cut 1" larger than the pillow form. For the back of the pillow how big should it be cut? If I fold down the edges for the envelope opening won't it need to be larger than the front piece?
i think both back and front should be the same. their edges should even up. the only thing to keep in mind is the envelope (the two pieces, obviously not the same size of front) should overlap, and you fold these openings, leaving the edges of the pillow alone. that's why she pinned it all around it. you just worry about having enough to fold AND overlap one another.
I have only just started sewing and this is my first real project, It was so easy to follow and I managed successfully to make these cushion covers - Thank you
Thanks so much for this, i am loving sewing with my lovely machine and after making a successful skirt, i wanted something straight forward but a greatly finished project and this is perfect! Will be doing this this evening! Eek!
Thank you so much for posting this. I haven't sewed since Jr. High School (in the early 80's), and just bought a machine to start again. I wanted to make a pillow for my nephew using NHL fabric that I bought, and I just finished it! My FIRST project in 30 years on a sewing machine! It was so easy to follow, and extremely helpful ~ AND it came out beautifully!! I'll be back for more!!
Just watched one of your videos for the first time, you are my new favorite !!! Your video was so easy to follow, I was doing the envelope pillows with so many extra steps it was making me crazy. So glad I found this video, sewing is going to be so much easier now. Thanks for the measurements list too!
I'm brand new to sewing with a machine and decided this would be my third project so I could update our lousy couch pillows. From cutting the fabric to stuffing to the pillow in it took me all of 25 minutes. THANK YOU for such an easy-to-follow tutorial! I will be making the last two tomorrow.
I made a slight change to the pattern. I stitched wrong sides together with a server them added a bias tape trim around the edge they turn out beautiful
I only started sewing about a year ago and watched ur video then and did make a few memory pillows using ur instructions. I am now about to make another and decided to watch this video again. Ur instructions are so easy to follow. You take your time and explain so well thank you so much.
Hi Melanie, your vedeo was very helpful and well done. Q: you didn't say what size to cut out the back two portions. how many inches do you allow for the overlap? My pillow is 13" across x 91/2" tall. rectangle so what measurements are the back two portions?
I am doing a 17 x 17" pillow form.. I am good with making the top piece to 18 x 18" for a 1" seam allowance but i am confused a bit on the two back pieces and the measurements???? thank you
Melanie, thank you for such a great tutorial, I followed your instructions and my envelope pillow cover turned out perfect. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.
I agree with the prior comment. I too refer to Melanie's site. Miss seeing her but always refer to her videos. Thank you for keeping up her site for others to follow!!
Hi Melanie. Thank you for your tutorial. I have one question on the corners that I don't understand. You cut all 4 corners. I don't understand how, after you turned it right side out, you had corners. Also, did you have to sew the corners again? Sorry if it's a dumb question, but I'm really new at the whole sewing thing. Thank you.
she trimmed a triangular piece of fabric off the corners, because when you turn the corners out it makes the corners crisp and point like. If you left the additional fabric on, it would look bulky instead of crisp.
When you trim the corners, you are trimming the excess fabric but not into the stitch. It's important you don't trim the stitching. It would have been good to see a close up of that. I'm sure other videos will show that. But really the best way is to try it yourself! Watch the video closely a few times, then try it exactly like she did. It works great!
What a great tutorial for making a pillow! I really haven't sewed for years but I think I can do it from watching your video......fingers crossed! Thanks so much for sharing!
I am going to make one now I just got laid off and I have a machine and fabric my mom left let's see what I can create. I am a carpenter I am pretty good with my hands. This seems to be easy enough.
Aww thank you so much! I am not an expert quilter, I only make for my g.babies, but will send you a photo of the finished quilt and pillow. I have not machine quilted yet.
I made my very first pillow using your instructions. I wanted to send you a photo of it, but I don't know how. I am happy with the pillow, my g daughter is going to love it. 😆
i'm going to make this for my friend who is moving away forever :'(. I'm going cover the big fabric with photos that we took of us! and the back will be solid!!!
Thank you for the instructions. Because of you I was able to turn an old silk composition I had "felted" together. I used a fancy stitch to attach the silk to the material--like a quilt. Was so much easier than trying to use a zipper to close the cover!
I know this video has been up for awhile but I just found it and I have to say - you are the best! Your blog post has all the measurements explained, so thorough, so great. Thank you Melanie K Ham, (I was also delighted to find your post about piping!!) you make this so easy. I hope you know how appreciated you are!
Melanie thank you so much for your video.... I am learning to sew at an early age of 57 lol. I watched my mother sew all my childhood and just recently purchased a Singer promise sewing machine so that I can learn how to sew. Project runway has inspired me and so here I am. I am looking forward to many more lessons...Thank you for your patience lol daphnne Castro
Thank you for having shown me how to do this! Made 3 pillow covers today. Took me from 11AM to 5 PM (mainly measuring and cutting), but am over the moon with the result!
Still couldn't find it but I figured it out did these in a couple of hours. Clothes from my son n law's Grannie who passed this summer. _lh3.googleusercontent.com/SFdiugFNn62RYzAi0YIeU_91Ly1AWSfRc6r0shpD2g6HIZPRXSNqigCTqF3vTFq5vzEGqrCuyA_
After you hit the 'show more' button, you need to go to Ms. Ham's Blog Post - it's the third link down from the top. It has a wealth of measurement info. (I'm sure I'm replying way too late but maybe for future reference ?? lol)
Your instructions were great. I have only been sewing three weeks and made this with no problem. I typed up instructions from the video because I like both written instructions and pictures. I will load them if you think they will help a newbie like me. Thanks again!
Melanie, your videos have taught me numerous knitting and crochet projects and now that I am learning to sew, I knew your videos would help me! Thank you!!!
Thank you for the wonderful instructions! Haven’t sewn for years. The granddaughters wanted embroidered pillows. So easy to make these sweet pillows. 💕
Rick B. I realize this is an old comment, but maybe it will be helpful for others ... in RUclips, if you go to the right of the video title, you will see a small carat (arrow) that points down. If you click on it, you’ll see the Description Box which will often have links to other videos mentioned, or further descriptions of the topic, as well as music, equipment, and apps they used to make the video.
I have been binge watching your videos...I first tried your ZIPPERED box pouch, have made the zipper coin purses and make-up bags...You gave me the instructions so I figured I would try the zipper...still working, but coming along nicely...Thanks so muchy
haha, yes you are right! I was thinking that when I was filming this, it looks so ugly lol! I will have to figure out how to make a prettier one ;)... in a dark color! ;/
I just finished making my envelope pillow cover. It did not come out just like yours because... my cloth was a BIT too small for my pillow, my sewing is nowhere near as good as yours, I had trouble with the machine... But in the end, the result is charmingly home-made, which is the effect I was going for. I don't want it to look store-bought. I embroidered a design that looks cute and retro to go with an old, brightly-colored granny-square afghan an aunt made in the '70s (bright colors on a black background - very trendy then; you see them all the time in old '70s TV shows and movies). Next time, I will make sure I have enough fabric for the pillow cover, and maybe in time I'll get better at cutting straight lines, etc. But in the meantime, my piece of embroidery now makes a cheery cushion - and the whole effect of the cushion and the afghan together on my sofa makes me smile. The cushion cover instructions couldn't be clearer or simpler. Bookmarked for future reference (because I have more embroidered cushion covers in mind). But I honestly think that once you've made one of these covers, all you need is the dimensions and you can sew them from memory - fast and easy.
I was also looking for it. Where am I missing it? I thought there was a conversion chart for various size pillows??? AWESOME tutorial, BTW. Thanks for doing it. Let me know where the chart can be found!
iv seen this one pretty little pillow.. but the crazy thing about it is that it was $200 for it 😨😨 that is just soo insane... if i ever spent that much on a single little pillow... it better last me for 100years
I made these pillow covers dur😢Covid and had Melanie saved as my favorites. I opened it up today to refresh myself on this technique and discovered she passed from brain cancer. I am currently driving a friend to Cleveland Clinic for treatments for brain cancer. My sincere sympathies. She had a lovely way about herself. Rest in peace
I am so excited!!! I've been using a heat pack and needed a cover. I adjusted the measurement myself and used your method and it worked like a charm! I havnt sown in YEARS! it took me 30 minutes! Thank you!!
My Mom always covered her ironing board cover by pinning a sheet over the old one. Her ironing board ended up having 15 layers of fabric after years and years of doing this. I miss her!
thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!! perfect instructions for a complete novice (i haven't used a sewing machine since middle school) - the instructions were spot on and extremely easy to follow and execute! extra thanks for including the different measurements.
In her memory I continue to use her instructive videos. Having episodes of cancer brain myself, I find each of her most basic videos a constant guide. Thank you for keeping her legacy available to all.
Me, too
So sad to hear that she passed 😢 this video got me back into sewing. She is great teacher.

Thank you for the lovely tutorial. I am 72 years young and a sewer, but needed a refresher on pillow making and you are just what I needed. Thank you.
ohh so sweet😊
Totes Galore “72 years young” my granny also says that 🥺

Thank you, melanie. I always come back to this video for a refresher when I'm making this pillow type. Miss you. What a great teacher.
Fabulous, thanks Mel! Made one just now - my first completely successful project as a 56 yo beginner! ;-)
My condolences to the family. This was the first video I ever saw that helped me sew this kind of pillow cover. I haven’t sewn in a few years and I remembered this video and her name to help me again.

That does help, thanks!
So Grateful to still watch and learn from such a sweet and kind girl. Rest in peace Melanie. X0
This was the easiest tutorial I have found. One was cutting fabric 2/3" etc. You kept it simple. Thanks
thank you dear Melanie for your sweetness and shining spirit. I learned to sew with your tutorials. Thanks for teaching me.
Hi I'm 12 and I wanted to try and make a cover and this was my first try and I'm quite proud! Thanks for the video it was so simple to make! xx 😊
Lauren Ralph woohoo! Well done!
Love this tutorial. I come back to it again and again. So thankful for Melanie and for her sharing her talents. Miss her. Prayers for her family🙏🏻
I used this tutorial to update the pillows on my daughter’s deck-BEST tutorial ever! It was so easy. Thank you
How do you cut the back piece to the pillow covering
Thank you so much for teaching me how to do this. I just made 3 pillows for each of my grandchildren for Easter. All in 1 night and I haven't sewn for years. My sisters got me a new sewing machine for my birthday and this was my first project. They turned out great. Happy Easter!
I can't believe how professional-looking my pillow turned out!!! Thanks for the tutorial!
I have used this video at least 4 times making pillows. So simple, well explained and user friendly. THANK YOU!
I have a tip. When sewing around the corners, kind of round them off instead of making a perfect right angle turn. This eliminates the look of pointing ears at each corner.
tobywinter1 great tip!

Fantastic video and excellent, easy-to-follow directions. My teenage daughter, who sewed one blanket once years ago, wanted a project she could make for a teacher gift. This was it. Perfect. Thank you for the simple instructions and the dimensions for determining measurements not given.
Hi Lauren, For a 27 x 27 you need
(1) 28 x 28
(1) 28 x 19
(1) 28 x 17
Those back measurements can be adjusted a bit, but you need to have at least 6 inches of overlap and leave enough for the small seam.
Melanie, thank you for the easy instructions on the envelope pillow. I found the measurements extremely helpful. Your tutorial is by far the best! Taking the time to iron the fabric is key to obtaining a professional look.

I'm sure other videos will show that. But really the best way is to try it yourself! Watch the video closely a few times, then try it exactly like she did. It works great!
Laurie Pope when you cut the corners it helps the corners stay triangular
What a great tutorial for making a pillow! I really haven't sewed for years but I think I can do it from watching your video......fingers crossed! Thanks so much for sharing!
I am going to make one now I just got laid off and I have a machine and fabric my mom left let's see what I can create. I am a carpenter I am pretty good with my hands. This seems to be easy enough.
I am so happy I found your channel. I have extra 9 inch blocks from my grand daughter's quilt, now I can make her a matching pillow. Thank you.
Diana Stevens Great use of the extra blocks!
MonkaMe15 what a great gift idea! Sorry your friend is moving :(. I have moved a lot and it stinks.
Thank you for the instructions. Because of you I was able to turn an old silk composition I had "felted" together. I used a fancy stitch to attach the silk to the material--like a quilt. Was so much easier than trying to use a zipper to close the cover!
you didn't say the measurements for the back pieces? They must be larger than the front since they overlap
renee2060 b
she told you where to get them!
I know this video has been up for awhile but I just found it and I have to say - you are the best! Your blog post has all the measurements explained, so thorough, so great. Thank you Melanie K Ham, (I was also delighted to find your post about piping!!) you make this so easy. I hope you know how appreciated you are!
When cutting the piece for the back, I notice there were 2 pieces what are those measurements
Just under her name is a link for "Pattern Instructions". Click that link and you will find ALL sizes listed.
Melanie thank you so much for your video.... I am learning to sew at an early age of 57 lol. I watched my mother sew all my childhood and just recently purchased a Singer promise sewing machine so that I can learn how to sew. Project runway has inspired me and so here I am. I am looking forward to many more lessons...Thank you for your patience lol daphnne Castro
great video. whats the deal with your ironing board?
It looks well-loved to me and has probably seen a lot of great projects!
Your video is straight to the point of the pillow slip cover project, dialed in and focused with out any waste of time. You rock
Great video, but couldn't get past your ironing board, Can you do a tutorial on how to make an iron board cover? I have one that need covered too.
I thought exactly the same thing!!
Thank you for having shown me how to do this! Made 3 pillow covers today. Took me from 11AM to 5 PM (mainly measuring and cutting), but am over the moon with the result!
I can't find the measurements for the back. I know the front is 15" but what are the back measurements. Thanks so much

After you hit the 'show more' button, you need to go to Ms. Ham's Blog Post - it's the third link down from the top. It has a wealth of measurement info. (I'm sure I'm replying way too late but maybe for future reference ?? lol)
Thanks
Your instructions were great. I have only been sewing three weeks and made this with no problem. I typed up instructions from the video because I like both written instructions and pictures. I will load them if you think they will help a newbie like me. Thanks again!
Easy to follow.Thank you for sharing:)
Awesome! Thanks for stopping by!
I will always love her work and I’m so thankful for her hard work to explain everything to us so well. ❤️
Didn't tell the size of the two shot pieces just that it was 15 " as the first piece

Where is the pattern instruction given
sumathi anil I can’t find them either & I’m all ready to cut the material!!!
@Christelle Lindewall WHERE ARE AT HE PATTERN INSTRUCTIONS? WOULD HAVE BEEN A BETTER TUTORIAL IF SHE GAVE ALL THE MEASUREMENTS
Melanie, your videos have taught me numerous knitting and crochet projects and now that I am learning to sew, I knew your videos would help me! Thank you!!!
This is a great tutorial! I can't wait to try it out :)
Thank you for the wonderful instructions! Haven’t sewn for years. The granddaughters wanted embroidered pillows. So easy to make these sweet pillows. 💕
Umm... check WHAT Description Box Below for the measurements?

This is a very nice tutorial, good instructions without a lot of gabbing :). Thank you so much for your instructions.
Love this video. Thank you
I have been binge watching your videos...I first tried your ZIPPERED box pouch, have made the zipper coin purses and make-up bags...You gave me the instructions so I figured I would try the zipper...still working, but coming along nicely...Thanks so muchy
haha, yes you are right! I was thinking that when I was filming this, it looks so ugly lol! I will have to figure out how to make a prettier one ;)... in a dark color! ;/
OMG i made my first pillow cover. Wow, wish I could post the photo.
It's really pretty to me. Not even just saying that.
WHERE IS THE DESCRIPTION BOX ?????
I was also looking for it. Where am I missing it? I thought there was a conversion chart for various size pillows??? AWESOME tutorial, BTW. Thanks for doing it. Let me know where the chart can be found!
Click on the little arrow just below the video, top right.
Where is the little arrow just below the video? I have looked at top right, I do not see an arrow.

Marge Yarnall I saw one by the video but I was on a Samsung tablet
I always check this site first for tutorials! Love Melanie's stained ironing board cover-- she really kept things real! Juju to her family & friends.
iv seen this one pretty little pillow.. but the crazy thing about it is that it was $200 for it 😨😨 that is just soo insane... if i ever spent that much on a single little pillow... it better last me for 100years
hyphySIN haha!
Rest in peace
that ironing board needs a new cover too lol
I am so excited!!! I've been using a heat pack and needed a cover. I adjusted the measurement myself and used your method and it worked like a charm! I havnt sown in YEARS! it took me 30 minutes! Thank you!!
Splurge on a new ironing board cover!
Mimsie Two it dosent matter. y9u can get the same thing done and not waste money. you should send her an ironing board cover if it bothers u so much.
My Mom always covered her ironing board cover by pinning a sheet over the old one. Her ironing board ended up having 15 layers of fabric after years and years of doing this. I miss her!
thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!! perfect instructions for a complete novice (i haven't used a sewing machine since middle school) - the instructions were spot on and extremely easy to follow and execute! extra thanks for including the different measurements.
awesome! so glad it was easy for you to follow!
You need to make yourself a new ironing board cover please*
If it bothers you that much why don't you make her one and send it to her as a 'thank you' for her great tutorial. :)
Well said Jerry, so many people have such negative comments, so kind of this lady to bother to make the video,
I was thinking the same Jim Tudor!!! sorry everyone lol good tutorial btw x thanks
She did and made a tutorial for it.
Jim Tudor lol
I followed the instructions and the result was really impressive! My first cushion cover ever! Thanks!
