Thank you for that information. Now I am verry disappointed that they spent !00 million dollars on housing his collection and a fellow countrymen Phill Collins didn't get a mention. Up until now from what I have heard it wasn't worth the trouble. I feel different now. I heard his voice in the background.

Thank you so much for the respect you gave to an important part of American history. Travis, the commander of the Alamo, was ordered to abandon the Alamo and join with the main force under Sam Houston. He chose to disobey those orders and was joined by other heroes of our Frontier such as Jim Bowie and Davy Crockett. Santa Ana surrounded the Alamo with the whole Mexican Army. The Mexican trumpet call that Santa Anna used against the Alamo to announce no quarter was "El Degüello". The Mexican army killed everyone in the Alamo except for just a few women and children, even those who were wounded and could no longer fight were killed. The defenders of the Alamo held off the Mexican army for 13 days giving Sam Houston precious time to organize his army. Houston retreated for a month from the Mexican army wearing them out and stretching their supply lines before attacking and routing the whole Mexican army. The names of Travis, Bowie, and Crockett are sacred to all Texans as are all the men who fought and died in the Alamo.

"Deguello" comes from a battle tactic of Spain & means "throat cutting". The "Black Flag", no quarter & no mercy. And we Texans view it as our "Thermopylae" where the "pass" was held for long enough for Gen Houston to pick his time & place of battle, resulting in the victory at San Jacinto.

The church is the center of the Alamo. The church and quadrangle are what the men and women converted into a fortification. You mentioned the church as if it's a side item but that's the one part to go into for sure.
There are signs outside which depict what the land had once appeared as and how it was used. You may not have noticed but there's a lot of history regarding the outside and the area between the Alamo and the Riverwalk.

It's also a particularly tough and strong wood that the British used to cut and take to build their war fleet with. It is a protected tree here in SC and even the state and federal governments have a hard time getting permission to cut them down as they would take so long to replace. Streets often work the way around them and even on Parris Island (Marine Boot Camp), they have to build around them.
If I remember correctly, the USS "Constitution" entered into a battle with the UK HMS Guerriere. When the HMS fired cannon balls at the hull of the Constitution, the Cannon Balls bounced off and she acquired the name "Old Iron Sides". It was this strength in the wood that the British wanted as (at the time) it seemed impenetrable. The big strong trees often fair well even in the toughest of hurricanes. The wood is so strong that the trunk can easily support such large and heavy limbs that give it that particular appearance (At least, this is how I remember being taught this in History class about 100 years ago) /grins/.

I did my United States Air Force basic training in San Antonio and part of the way through, our flight got day passes to see The Alamo. That was almost fifty years ago and the whole place was nothing like it is in this video. The large plaza in front didn't exist, with the busy street running only a few yards away from the facade . There was no souvenir shop or external museum, because the inside of the Church was the museum. There were no electronics, nor paintings or modern renovations. There was just the reverence for the heros, Colonels, Jim Bowie, Davy Crockett and Lieutenant Colonel William Travis along with their men.

America actually has a war prize from the battle of the Alamo. It’s general Santa Anna’s wooden prosthetic leg. Somehow we got it off him. Although the Mexican government has been screaming for years trying to recover it as a cultural relic. Unfortunately they legally don’t have any ground to stand on. It’s technically still considered a war trophy and gained legally by the American government. The leg is still on display somewhere in Texas as a museum piece. You can literally see how time just ate away at the leg.

The thing you need to know about the Alamo is that...those men knew they wouldn't survive. Davy Crockett came from Tennessee and ended up joining the fight. Those 383 men held off a much larger Mexican army and gave Sam Houston and his men the opportunity to move eastward and regroup. They then overwhelmed the a much larger Mexican army at San Jacinto (very near where I grew up). It was at San Jacinto where Texas won its independence. The sacrifice of those men at the Alamo and at Goliad will never be forgotten.

There are actually several other Spanish missions located not far from this Alamo in San Antonio. Some of these missions are still used today as Catholic churches. I say this for non-Americans who may watch this channel:
There is a famous legend of the Alamo, called the "Legend of the Line." Colonel William Travis, who was leading the fort against General Santa Anna and his army, was given a final chance to surrender or all of the defenders would be killed. Colonel Travis took out his sabre and drew a line in the sand - cross to his side and fight, likely risking death, or stay on the other side and surrender. According to the story, all but one decided to stay and fight.
Whether it's true or not is unsure, but it's a very interesting story. If it is true, there's a metal line on the floor of one section of the Alamo, which is where Travis was supposed to have drawn the line.

But that was many years ago so maybe I'm not remembering correctly or we just didn't go inside it. We did go to Ripley's Believe it or Not wax museum and funhouse when they were right across the street, but I don't believe they're there anymore. But if they are, they're really interesting places to visit.

You can go to see the 2nd Alamo about an hour away where they shoot the movie scenes and blow the place up and then rebuild it for the next movie 😅

Sealife actually does not have the deep sea creatures. They are entirely coral reef fish and shallow water fish. I believe San Diego and the national aquarium in Baltimore have the deep sea fish. The Natural history museum in DC has the preserved specimens on display. They also have the giant lion’s man jellyfish on display which really do not preserve well yet it’s absolutely perfect in what it looks like in life.

The entire area around the Alamo is going to be redone starting as of yesterday. Some of the buildings you walked by are going to be demolished. Hope you went by San Fernando Cathedral, Spanish Governor's Palace, Historic Market Square, San Antonio Missions, Sea World, just a few.

Great review of the Alamo, Beesleys. Love your blogs of your trip to the states .
I know you have done film reviews in the past, you might want to do one on the Alamo. Disney back in the 1990s had a version on the battle that was very good, I believe Ron Howard directed it. You both might want to review it sometime. Unfortunately, most of the movies on the Alamo were box office flops, but I think you both would enjoy this version.
    Looking forward to seeing more!

If y'all go back to San Antonio again in the future you should try to do the San Antonio mission trail. Several Spanish missions up and down the River there. It is a UNESCO world heritage site, also natural bridge caverns just north of town is fantastic! 👍🏻

The flag of France was just a brief moment in Texas history, a teeny blip that many Texans don't consider significant or worthy of inclusion in the state flags.

The only problem with a clown fish is they have a prickly friend for a home.
Santa Ana messed up big time at the Alamo when killed everybody that might of fought again him. When he remove surrender as a option. It meant win or die. So you fight until you can fight no more.

Very, very cool to see y'all in my home city!! Of course we locals rarely go to all these tourist trap locations unless we're showing visitors from out-of-town. That said, these are must-visit locations for those who've never been! Btw, me and my family are from here, but I grew up as a kid in the UK so I can relate to so much on your channel.

Also good for you that you came once it started to get "cooler". Still hot as hell right now, but would've been much worse 3 or 4 weeks ago. But December is definitely THE BEST time to visit San Antonio. Not only for the cooler (jumper) weather, but also the Xmas decorations which make Downtown look better and more stunning than the rest of the year. January is depressing once all the decorations have been removed and they literally finish the job in about 1 day. 😔

The Alamo is infamous due to the Mexican General Santa Anna having all the surviving Texans slaughtered after the end of the battle. During the battles between the Mexicans and the American/Texans they would cry out REMEMBER THE ALAMO! There are two movies about the Alamo battle. John Wayne's movie released in 1960, and a more recent one was released in 2004 with Dennis Quaid and Billy Bob Thornton. Both are called "The Alamo". A little heads up for the souvenir penny crusher machines. You need to use the pennies made BEFORE 1982. They are 90% copper. The ones made AFTER 1981 are zinc (a white/silver-looking metal), coated with copper. When you crush the newer pennies they don't look as nice. Sometimes it's hard to find the older pennies. Ask a cashier if they have a couple. The newer penny-crushing machines don't give you the option of using your own pennies and 9 times out of 10 they'll be using the newer copper-coated zinc pennies. The newer machines charge more too. 😥 Now, ya know.

I haven't been to the Alamo in nearly thirty years. It has changed a lot.. It seems to be more of a museum now than a Texas shrine. At my time video was not permitted and only certain areas could be photographed, hats of any kind were not allowed, you were told to be quiet and respectful, touching the actual stones/bricks was forbidden and the gift shop was extremely limited. Maybe a few stickers, pins or small flags.... (edit) Wanted to say sorry, didn't realize y'all hadn't entered the mission before I commented.

Thank you for sharing! I have been to Texas but not San Antonio. This country has been fought for just about every inch of land. Remember the Alamo!! So did they tell you why The State of Texas is known as the Lone Star State? Because it is the only state that can Legally succeed from the Union. If they up and declare Texas as its own country, the other 49 states will abide by their wishes. Again thank you for sharing!!

A fairly historical movie about the Alamo, AND San Jacinto is 2004's "The Alamo". There were no less than 3 Texas historians advising on details of speech, clothing, and tactics.
For just entertainment, 1965's The Alamo is probably better- it has John Wayne as Crockett after all))

We might be a young country, but we have history. We have the Civil War. We have the revolutionary war. We have the war with Mexico. Wow has that area really changed I was there about 30 years ago and are you went to see was the church of the Alamo I would love to see all the information and displays they have in that building. I don’t think there was a souvenir shop either on the premises. I have a cousin that lives in San Antonio so if I ever get down there to visit her again, I am definitely going to ask if we could go so I could see the displays.

The six flags are the flags flown over Texas/Tejas territory in history. The 5th flag, or that today is the Texas state flag, represents when Texas was a separate sovereign country before joining the United States. Perhaps you have heard of the Six Flags theme parks that are headquartered in Texas and located throughout the United States? Named for the six flags that have flown over Texas.
