    This lecture considers the Amazons in Greek legend and art. Who were these warrior women and why did they remain a source of curiosity, wonder and fear in the Greek imagination?

    He says he's not going to be clever with his introduction. Then he slips "penultimate presentation" (an excellent pun since it's the Penn Museum) in there like a boss.

      Tim Callahan I, also, love these types of lectures! If you love thes penn museum lectures, Definitely look at "The Oriental Institute" channel on youtube, as well as the "Semitic Museum" channel and there are MANY UNIVERSITY CHANNELS THAT ARE UNBELIEVABLY AWESOME!!!! TRY, THOUGH, ESPECIALLY THOSE TWO - OH! AND, ALSO " THE NATIONAL GALLERY OF ART" CHANNEL. that is the American one. The Uk's one is good, too - "the National Gallery" is the name of the UK channel (no "of art" in that one's name). Try Stanford, Cambridge, Yale, etc., and, also The Great Courses has a RUclips channel- and that is its name, too...ENJOY! I LOVE THEM!!

    I'm very surprised the speaker never mentioned amazonion woman Tomris! also called Thomyris, Tomris, or Tomiride, reigned over the Massagetae, an Iranian Saka people of Central Asia.[3] Tomyris led her armies to defend against an attack by Cyrus the Great of the Achaemenid Empire, and, according to Herodotus, defeated and killed Cyrus by beheading in 530 BC. She is well known in the history that their is movie about her (The Legend of Tomiris)

    Whenever you see Superman, Batman or Spiderman; no one argues if this is us entertaining yourselves with an unrealistic view of what a man should be. No one complains about Disney princesses where the female is always beautiful naive, getting into mischief and always needing to be rescued. Isn't that an unrealistic view of women? Girls are graduating at higher levels in College than their male counterparts, girls are involve in science, engineering and joining the military. Men could be smart, strong, brave and handsome and is considered a healthy role model for boys. But if a women is smart, strong, brave and beautiful it is questioned if this is a healthy role model for girls. The women in movies he described are a symbolic reflection of how everyday women are determining for themselves their roles in society.

      I really relate to this comment! Why do the stories we most commonly tell of women feature weak and naive leads. I find this so patronising, and unrealistic. Most of the women I know had to be hella tough to get anywhere in life - from mothers to those working. What we so often see in myth and fairytales is either women's stories untold (as in mythology) or patronising portrayals as in fairytales

    Tamerlane, according to the scholars who went with him to record his activities, report he used Amazon cavalry & scouts. In 50 years of battles, Tamerlane never lost, part because his lighter framed scouts rode further faster, and always came back. Then, aware of where the enemy was, his Amazon cavalry was sent out and around to suddenly come outta nowhere shooting arrows into the camps. Again, heavier male cavalry could never catch them, and since nobody would ever admit to being attacked by women, he repeated this with every battle. The cover of Mallory, "In Search of the Indo-Europeans", shows an amazon making a "Parthian shot" over the horse's ass after it had done a 180 and was riding away. The unfamiliar size of the girls, riding directly at, then away, made it hard for enemy archers to get the range right.

    I wish history did not affected by nowadays politics so they could have clearly mentioned that these amazon women were Irainan/Persian. Their clothes especially trousers are Persian. it is nothing to do to far East. Wish one day history becomes free of politics.

    35:23 - ok, maybe it is Mycenaean stele, but it's typical depiction of a regular Scythian. So what it's got to do with Amazons and Mycenaean artefacts?
    Hypothesis is weak when you misrepresenting iconography to fit it.

  • @alexdunphy3716

    Genetics show the Scythians were basically European. Central Asia has received large East Asian and Turkic admixture since Scythian times but their genetic Legacy is still visible in the region

    • @alexman378
      @alexman378 4 года назад +2

      The fact people who concern themselves with history say that Scythians were nomads but in the same breath call them as if they are a single race of people is hilarious. “Scythian” is an umbrella term, there were many different tribes, such as the Paryzyks, the Iazyges, the Roxolani and the Sarmatians. It’s like saying “European”, while if you take a straight up Scandinavian and an Italian, you instantly can tell them apart. They were traced in Europe, the Middle East, Eastern countries, even African countries, there’s no possible way they were one single race or that they much cared for racial purity. Some describe them as red and blonde haired, others as darker and more Arab or Turkic like. They’re all correct, it just depends on which tribe and region they refer to.

    Maybe the herodotus story is more explicit then it comes off in this lecture but I didn't here anything that suggested that the skytheins had tamed the amazons so much as joined them, left their homes to live where they wouldn't need to live within the social restraints of Greek women and they're cultures bonded together. Is because they had sex? A giant group of women with out any men among them wanted to get with some guys eventually. Does he think it's more likely that they'd become a band of nuns?

    I historically may see tall slender dark haired step women particularly skilled in archery, horse riding and light armor, I think their men were few living in their own community olny to be available at the women's invitation for sex,work or sometimes campaign.

    The map was showed in min 14:23 is covers ancient Greater Iran/Persia. the suffix "Stan" is clearly a Persian suffix for place. I am surprised why he does not mention clearly as ancient Iran! Is it so scary to be loyal to the facts just because of politics!

      me hee+ So many US citizens were killed by powerful women warriors in Vietnam... must be strange for you to think of a 4'11" girl blowing a 6'4" marine in half but it was all too common. The Soviet Union in WW2 had women fighting on the front lines with incredible success as well. There are so many examples in history your comment is total ignorance.

    The author rightfully argues against mixing nationalist and racist ideology with scientific archeology and history. However, he doesn't realize, that he himself became a victim of third wave feminism and postmodern gender ideology. This is a very disturbing trend.

    • @blueberry7899
      @blueberry7899 5 лет назад +4

      About 99 % of myths and legends feature men as the main character -women only as side character and wives.
      Asking for stories about women doing something other then waiting to be saved by a prince, is not a disturbing trend - it is asking for our equal share of the pie. Its asking for a recognition that women are not one dimensional creatures.

    • @blueberry7899
      @blueberry7899 5 лет назад +2

      And also women's stories where eradicated by the advent of Christianity which decided that women where weak. That was a disturbing trend. Creating portrayals of women is not. If your argue it is not realistic.... Well! That's why it is myth, you really think Odin, thor, Zeus are based upon historically documented family's?? Myths are a reflection of our culture, when I look around in really life I see plenty of strong women. But do I see these reflected in myth?? No, so often the stories are either not told our they are portrays of naive idiotic women. Sorry for the rant.
