How To Fix A Loose Exterior Railing-Tutorial

- In this video, I show you how to fix a loose exterior railing that is shaking or wobbly. It is a simple process and you simply need a few brackets and the appropriate screws to drill into the material. In this case, I was dealing with concrete and metal so I had to use the appropriate types and sizes of screws that would allow me to secure the brackets. The best thing about this method is that you can use any type and size of bracket that fits your specific situation.

Hate to be negative, but this neither works for sturdiness nor estetics…. Could lead to someone leaning onto it and falling through….. just fancy the leverage these Ls will be facing. Instead, remove fence and check if metal in post is Ok…. If so, make hole larger and use concrete filler. If rusty, weld to repair and then same as above 😅👷🏻♂️💥
Why didn’t you just use anchoring cement? Thanks for the video I need to make my railing secure and add a railing
They will work on a short rail, but if you dealing with more than 5ft of rail, drill a 3/8 hole right beside the loose rail, drive a piece of 1/2 rebar into the concrete until it tightens up, take a side grinder and cut the rebar flush. Do each rail. Basically put a steel dowel in the concrete.
Yours seem more harder 😂
I’m guessing after that you adhere the loose rail to the rebar next to it? Bc what is putting rebar next to a loose rail doing?
@@earnesthill9477I would appreciate any other help. Thank you.
@@earnesthill9477 It's acting as a shim against the foot of the railing embedded in the concrete, to keep it from wobbling.
"So im gonna get off me knees cause they hurt" I felt that bro lol
What if the railing is in a shoe that is screwed to the concrete and the bolts are rusted that tighten the railing inside the shoe?
Very helpful video. Thank you so much for sharing. Thumbs up! Beth
At my daughter's place aluminum railing. Loose. Needs this done in a couple places. Windsor Ontario. Who to call
Thank you!!! You saved me so much money!!!
Very good, Im going to use your idea.
Pro tip.. weld the L bracket
Good to know, looks like a good job there.
Im gonna try this. thanks
Why not just use anchoring cement
Thanks I have that issue in front porch cool thx
Thank you so much!
All these videos focus on the railing at the ground level. My railing is fine at the ground- it’s loose at the side that connects to my house.
I'd suggest drilling through the current screw holes for installing wall type anchors, then install the screws back into the inserts. The screws have worked loose from use. Drilling new, larger holes for the inserts, will allow the screws to be inserted into a new, tight fit, sleeve.
Half fast repair!
That will fix the issue, but it's an ugly looking repair using the L-brackets, with one installed cockeyed. Unless those L-brackets and the screws that go into the railing post are stainless steel they will rust out in short order. I have the same problem with my front door railings. My solution will be to lift the railings out of the holes in the cement using a bottle jack, clean out the holes and possibly enlarge them, then re-install the railings with anchor cement.
Amateur, ugly, temporary and wrong. Creating more work for a proper repair. Plus added 4 holes in the railing for water running down hill to enter, pool and rust from the inside out. Causing the railing to eventually break free completely.
What would you suggest?
What do you suggest instead?
I just wrote a detailed repair description and it was erased. So here we go again
Basically determine if the railing is rusted out or whole and sound.
Railings can work loose if the concrete is defective from a bad mix or improper cure. That’s what I think happened here, maybe.
If the railing is sound, carefully dig the concrete out around the base. Dig it out to good, solid concrete. You’ll see and feel the difference.
Don’t do this if you’ve never worked with concrete or Quikcrete, which is what I used to fix my railing base.
I just fixed the bottom step of my stairway last summer.
But my railing was rusted out after I dug it out. I cut out the rusted metal with a Sawzall to clean sound metal. I used an anchor post that slid right over the cut railing ,my friend welded the railing to the base for me. The anchor also had four holes at its base. I used a concrete bit to drill out the holes, insert and bolt down the base. The anchor was below the concrete level of the stair and you couldn’t see any seam.
I poured and shaped the Quikcrete in one day. Gave it more time then it needed to dry and painted everything in 2 hours. Make sure and do any painting last. Also make sure and treat bare metal with a metal wash and use a rust inhibiting primer.
Also I did my stair during a heat wave. So I made sure to mix the concrete properly and kept it wet while it was drying.
If you want to do a temporary job like this you get what you put into it
If you’re not mechanically or artistically inclined pay someone to do it. The job in this video will work for awhile but eventually it’ll end up causing even more damage.I’m just talking from experience with work like this. I actually shouldn’t have been so harsh in my description,so I apologize if it offended anyone
But, doing a good tight job is not that hard and it feels good when you look at it. Also you can practice with the Quikcrete or concrete on a small punched in cardboard box if you want to perfect your technique. Be careful you don’t bite off more than you can chew.
I did a 5’x50’ curved 90° walkway with stone pavers about 15 years ago that still looks great. I just went out and bought a Home Depot how to book,a 5foot high pile of pea gravel, about 8 pallets of sand and 10 pallets of pavers dumped in front of my house, paver edging, stakes, rented a compactor and bought a really good concrete cutting blade for my Skilsaw. Cant emphasize how important finding the right blade to cut those pavers was. That took me about 4 days working by myself. But I did it and it feels good to look at it. And I saved about 5 grand from the lowest quote. That’s what made me decide to do it. I’ve done other things in my house. Carpentry, did windows with a friend. It’s waaay easier than I thought. Everything happens from
the inside unless you’re changing the size of the window or there’s termite or other wood damage.
Anyway this got kinda long. Could have fixed that step in the time it took to write it;)
Tend to agree - not all tips are good. Must be safe and look nice 😊
WTF?? lol
De la Ghetto!
