    To my ears and imho the Wilkinson sounds better alround, warm, full harmonic. Vanson a tat bit more sparckle but also thinner. Thanks for the demo... and thank God we all have different ears and perception of sounds!

    Thanks for the heads up on the Vanson pickups. I've had hardware from them. Always good quality. Their locking tuners are superb.

  • @JammyGit
    @JammyGit 7 лет назад +6

    Vanson is a great ebay shop and Ben is a really nice bloke and I'd recommend Vansons to anybody. I've bought lots of stuff from them in the past and will do again in future. I could be wrong but I'm about 95% certain that Vansons own brand is the same as Wilkinsons, it's just unbranded.
    Nevertheless, they both produce top quality gear. I've installed Wilkinsons EZ lock tuners on nearly all of my guitars and they stay in tune perfectly. In fact all of the hardware on my own builds is a mixture of Wilkinson and Vanson and all of it is solidly made top quality stuff.
    For pickups though I've only tried Wilkinsons alnico 5 Jazz bass ones at the moment and they're fantastic. I will give more of theirs a try as well as Vansons own because I've spent a sh*t load of dough on pickups from Duncans and TV Jones, some of them up to £100 per pickup and I've learned the hard way that you're paying for the name when it comes to gear and guitarists are amongst the most gullible of all consumers. 'You get what you pay for' is the BS I keep hearing.....well no you don't most of the time, you get what you're willing to pay and if you spend a lot of money you automatically think you're getting better, but mostly you don't.

      Yeah, I agree. Wilkinson p/ups are usually pretty good. I've had them in several guitars & they are equally as good as the big name brands. In this case I preferred the Vansons though... they had more depth to my ears. The important thing to remember about pickups is that they are pretty basic technology... magnets & wire, so it's not difficult to figure out what's going on. The main variables are DC resistance (ie how much wire is on the bobbin) and magnetic field strength. Both of these are easily measurable.
      All the rest of the "hocus pocus" that gets talked about; cloth insulation vs plastic on the connecting wires; "scatter" winding is just marketing BS. I used to work in a test lab for a company which made electrical components involving copper wires being would onto bobbins. Producing a "scatter wind" (something which usually found on expensive pickups) is actually CHEAPER than having a regular, uniform wind, as the winding machine didn't have to be set up to anywhere near the same degree of accuracy. We used to use this technique on low voltage components as it wasn't necessary to have the uniform wind. High voltage coils used to need the uniform wind to avoid arcing between winds. In a low- voltage audio application (like a guitar pickup) that scatter wind technique will just result in random stray capacitance which robs the pickup of some of it's high frequency response... and makes the pickups less consistent.

    According to the head man at Harley Benton, they now use Roswell pickups because they ran in to component quality control problems with some builders buying 'Fake' Wilkinsons that were ceramic, whereas the genuine Wilkinson was Alnico 5. The move to Roswell means Harley Benton have more control over component quality at source.
    I've installed these very same Wilkinson and Vanson pickups in my own guitars and for other folk, so can recommend both sets. Personally I prefer the quieter, cleaner tones of the Vansons because it suits my leanings towards single coils and mini humbuckers. I only play clean tones. Both are excellent pickups and great bang for the buck. The Vansons tend to be my go-to PAF style humbuckers and they also go well with single coils in a H-S-S guitar like a Yamaha Pacifica. Horses for course. Whatever floats your boat. There is no right or wrong answer, only what sounds best to your ears and what sound you are looking for.

    Vanson pickups are excellent value for the money, I have use their Alnico V P90 Humbucker size pickups on a Subzero Tele, and Vanson Alnico V "Open Top" Humbuckers on a Subzero LP, and have just sent off for their single coil Tele set for my Squire Affinity, arrives in two days. Recommend them.

    Different pickups means a different sound. Not necessarly one better than the other one. Just different. Each of us will prefers one instead the other. Ceramic magnets are way different than alnico II. Think that for rock and blues Vanson can accomplish more fans while for heavier rock and heavier blues Wilkinson can do somehow better. But nothing a good amp setting and/or a pedalboard can fix

    Good comparison! Vanson pick ups are great, IMO. I have AlNiCo 2s and 5s in a couple of my cheap LP type guitars. Of course, as soon as people see the price, they think they are rubbish.

      @JRobsonGuitar  7 лет назад +11

      Thanks. Yeah... there's a lot of bulls&*£t talked about pickups. My background is as an electronics engineer so I tend to treat the justifications for the more expensive p/ups with a heavy does of scepticism. What matters is the amount of copper wire, the type of magnet and the magnetic field strength (which is largely dependent on the type of magnet). Get those things right and you will have a good pickup which doesn't need to cost a hell of a lot.

    I was looking on line for a pickup upgrade for my 15 year old grandson on his Epiphone Special L.P. Then I remembered viewing this video a while ago. I think these would be a great upgrade for that guitar. Thank you! BTW I recently heard that the reason Harley Benton switched to Roswell pickups is that the Chinese started counterfeiting the Wilkinson pickups that they were putting in the Harley Benton guitars. So it seems that your ears weren't lying to you.

    The M at the start denotes the pickup is ceramic for Wilkinsons. All their pickups have an alnico and ceramic version. The M indicates cheaper ceramic version.
    Both Vanson and Wilkinsons are made by Artec, so both good. And cheap.

    The Vanson's are definitely warmer in tone, and may just edge it, but there's not enough in it, for me, to warrant changing the pickups. Both sound very good. You are pleased with the Vanson's so that's all that matters John eh ? Lovely guitar and, as always, great playing my friend. Thanks for the comparison video, very enjoyable and interesting.

    Vanson are made for clean sound ,period , I put a set of the '59's in a Les Paul copy by Brownsville . It is the heaviest Les Paul I ever strapped on and I must say , very well made , the inlay ,and neck and body are well above the Epiphone LP , These Pups are a perfect match , yes they are a little on the quiet side ,but are very well balanced across and up and down the fret board . so, if you want distortion then these are not something for you , but again ,if you use effects then you will love them . I will buy more soon.

    Your are a far better guitarist than I! Having said that the Wilkerson sounded more dynamic to me.
    I was a little surprised, I expected the Vansons to sound a lot better than they did in the comparisons.
    Also I could imagine that the Wilkerson (suspected ceramic) pickups, with all that added clarity, might punch through a mix better.

    Great video and playing as always John! I had a similar scenario with a mim telecaster that was given to me by a friend. Great guitar, was cream colored but I sanded that off and finished in an oak stain with hand rubbed poly on top. Anyway the pickups were awfully noisy so I started looking at the noiseless type single coils. Fenders were out of the question price wise. Then I saw a video on youtube about a tele with Drangonfire noiseless pickups in it. Read the reviews and the sound samples sounded great so I pulled the trigger. What a difference! Noise gone. Meanwhile what they did with the tone, was give the neck pu a nice warm sound... Kind of jazzy sounding. Both pus together sounds like a tele, just a tad warmer. Bridge is a little shrill but workable with the tone knob. Think I paid $65 for the set. Wish I had known about the Vansons sooner lol. Btw have a HB CST24 coming in paradise flame and the wraparound bridge. I'm on the other side of the pond, so its taking a little bit to get to me. Sure it will be worth the wait!!

  • @ashleyelmaya4292
    @ashleyelmaya4292 7 лет назад

    Just my take on it. Yes, the 2 brands were different in their own way. I thought the Wilkinsons sounded fairly classic rock & the overdriven sustain was nice, the cleans not so good. The Vansons have more of a sparkle, especially when clean which I like. Both have their own merits depending on what you are after tone wise. I have a Vanson alnico 2 Rock-a-tron HB in the neck of my telecaster which (I think!) gives a nice jazz-blues tone both clean & overdriven. Many thanks for an interesting review.

    Theres so many strange things for me here.
    I was thinking about buying a cheap guitar with mini humbucker and if I wanted affordable replacement pickups the 2 brands I saw were Vanson and Wilkinson and here I find a video comparing those exact brands.
    Not only that, but it's on a channel I watch quite a bit.
    And you have hair.
    Also Vansons shop seem to also sell Wilkinson stuff.
    On your thoughts on them sounding ceramic. It's possible. The main guy in charge of Harley Benton stopped using Wilkinson because he couldn't guarantee that some of the factories weren't getting fakes, so you may have a fake.
    I actually liked the Wilkinson's just as much as the Vanson.

    I have the Wilkinson Ceramic PAF pups in three of my guitars. The theory that ceramics are "brittle" is BS. BUT I have heard the MWHSA's are less than "sweet" and that they do have too much upper mid's. Believe me the lower output Wilkinson's are sweet. Ceramics get a bad rap because they are less expensive and often overwound which puts them out of balance. The magnetic field is already stronger than an alnico so they don't benefit from being overpowered. Done right they are beautiful.

    Hello! Did you experiment with adjusting the polepieces individually? Also, the position of the screw-slots can affect tone. Have mine all set paralel with the strings. Tone seems to get bit warbly when slots are perpendicular to the strings, most obvious if strings are closer. Btw, I prefered the rich sound of the Wilkinsons... Greetings

    Except for on both pickups, I much prefer the Wilkinsons. More full, better highs, more rounded, and definitely more crunch. HOWEVER, when playing on both pickups the Wilkinsons got seriously muddy. They sound great individually, but together not so good. I can't figure that out, but maybe someone with more electronics experience can explain it.

    Have a gander at Cory Mura's latest RUclips video, if you have not seen it, where he is talking to the guy behind the Harley Benton guitars. A very interesting interview and how they go about it. Towards the end they discuss the Wilkinson pickups and the fact that they have moved across to Roswell. They really rate Wilkinson but they could not guarantee that they were not getting pirated or just bad pickups masquerading as Wilkinson's. They know that they had some. Roswell were making pickups for some of the higher end manufacturers so by moving across to them they, Thomann have control of this part of the product.

    I wish you had autopsied the Wilkinsons to see if they are actually ceramic magnets, or alnico as claimed.
    The Vansons sounded a bit warmer/darker, and broke up earlier, from what i could tell on my speaker system, but to be honest... i don't like either set of pickups.
    I think i would have for P90s, but then i don't know what your tastes are. Maybe you already have the P90's covered in your arsenal and want something differnt.
    If the Vanson's truly do recapture the vibe of true 59 vintage tones... then it's no wonder Gibson moved on... 'cause that sound sucks.

      This is such a simpel solution, that nobody wants or can understand it.
      Other simpel solution is to solder a small ten pence capacitor parallel to the pickup, to cut out the hights a bit. This would be a permanent fix, it sounds like a "warmer", more old style pickup.

    vanson more balanced frequencies and complex harmonics, narrower frequency range. wilkinson less harmonic and more separation notes and emphasis on acute. much quality price, each one to its style ... thanks the final sound is the sum of all the parts. guitar and its wood, amplifier and speaker type, signal cables. Choose wisely for our music style. and saving money does not need to spend that much money.
    the chain breaks the weakest link. Gracias

    I have several guitars with wilkinson pickups and one with Seymours and they don't sound any better,if you're guitar is setup properly and you have a good amp wilkinsons are very good pups

    • @JRobsonGuitar
      @JRobsonGuitar  4 года назад

      The problem was that they WEREN'T Wilkinson pups. The reason HB went to Roswell pups is that there are a LOT of fake Wilkinson pups out there & it seems I got some of this guitar. Oh, and no... No modulation, just a bit of reverb & delay.

  • @daveanderson5680

    .....no reason to spend big $ on Duncan or Lollar HB pickups for a cheap guitar with so many excellent choices available from Asia. I’ve installed careful eBay Selections from Vanson, GFS/Guitar Fetish, Guitar Madness, and others.....always an improvement over the cheap OEMs and never more than about $20 per HB pickup. I would prefer the Vanson HBs for a more warm classic sound.....but the Wilkinson HBs sure gave a better hot & modern sound. The Vanson HB lost note separation on the most overdriven tracks.....and the Wilkinson HBs lacked the warm vintage VOCAL qualities on the clean tracks.

    Have you tried the Vanson '57 humbuckers? I'm wondering what difference in tone they have from the '59 set.

    • @JRobsonGuitar
      @JRobsonGuitar  7 лет назад

      I haven't tried those, but the only difference seems to be the magnet - Alnico II as opposed to Alnico V. This would probably make them a little less "hot" in terms of output with a smoother sound. Still a great classic rock p/u though. Slash famously uses SD Alnico Pro II pickups, for example.

      Creamier than the '59s, perfect for classic rock and blues. Metal guitarist's may prefer the hotter 59s but for me the 57's are where it's at and the closest to big "G" 57's you will find at this price point.
      My 2c for anyone else wondering.

      I have just ordered a Harley Benton HB35 and was thinking of upgrading the pickups.
      This video has been very informative.
      I am looking at Vanson alnico 2's as a want a mellow sounds, more jazzy blues than rock.
      Great video

      Me too. Clean, the Wilkinsons have more warmth and character. The Vansons sound rather brittle. But it's the other way around with the crunch sounds!

    18:40 you said coil tap you meant coil split?

      There's a discussion of the distinction here: jbepickups.com/coil-tapping-vs-coil-splitting/ . The author claims that coil-tapping produces a more accurate 'single coil' sound and, because parts of both coils in the humbucker are working, exhibits much lower noise. If that's true, then the distinction is a valid one. But I defer to your technical training.

    Harley Benton swapped Wilkinson for Roswell because they were conned with fake Wilkinsons. Hearing this, I think you got one of the fakes.

    For me Wilkinson sound better by far ... The Vanson lack of a clear sound and seem to be cheesy. With the Vanson there is absolutely no differentiated sound. They sound like pudding to my ears.

    Hi John, I really like your videos and find them very informative. But...how about making your environment a bit nicer? In this video it looks like your are in a laundry room. Your professionalism could be enhanced even more if you took some care about the settings in wich you present yourself, in my humble opinion :-)
