In my humble opinion, as a fan, I believe classical chess is what keeps the game moving forward as is in this format is that great true brilliancies are born; beautiful games that become classics and live forever. Yes, quicker time formats are very exiting at the moment we're playing or watching the games, but many times games are won rather by a mistake or inaccuracy by the opponent than a by computerlike-precise combination by the players. Two men going at it like state-of-the-art machines from the let go, producing true masterpieces in the process, the uncertainty of not knowing who will crack first, whose preparation will pay off sooner and better, players matching super computer moves over and over, defending and saving seem-to-be-lost positions like magicians, the long wait in total suspense; that makes classical chess still attractive and the best way to find out who the better player is.

I want to say "thank you" to all the organizations who are sponsoring on-line tournaments for the world's top players (as well as events for players of lesser strength). Travel and housing costs are pretty much eliminated, as well as other logistical challenges. And because we have such a nice selection of commentators to choose from, there's no risk of anybody with internet access missing coverage of top-tier events. Events seem to be happening one right after another, as proven by the fact that the Morphy saga is now just an intermittent filler.

It has been so long since anyone brought up the topic of the future of classic chess. And I think we already have the solution. There are Rapid events, Blitz events and of course classic events out there, that's it!
And the classic world champion title must be decided through classical games, to maintain the foundation of the game.

    • @reaganabroad4952
      @reaganabroad4952 4 года назад

I don't think anyone is suggesting that Classical will go away. The players don't want that. However, it's clear that there should be more Rapid tournaments.
I love the format of playing a four game Rapid match. It's far superior than a Classical game.
I wonder if prestigious tournaments will start flipping. For example, the Sinquefield Cup. Holy cow! Great field, but it's usually 80-85% draws, and decisive games typically 60-90 moves. It's a missed opportunity.

You raise an interesting question about the survival of classical chess. I think it will survive, but with less emphasis. I would like to see tournaments with more emphasis on serendipity. I would like to see tournaments in which players learned at the last minute, by some random mechanism, whether the game would be Fisher Random, classical or blitz. This would make home preparation much less important, but would still test the players' skill at all formats. But I guess I have no reason to think this would happen :) I think that the reason short games are popular is because they are much less cut and dried. Anything that makes matches more exciting is good for the popularity of the game, because it makes them more watchable.

Classical chess could be left to the battle of engines. It makes much more sense to let engines battle in classical time formats - it's about calculating deep lines.
Humans should switch to faster time controls, rapid and blitz with a focus on playing creative attacking chess like this brilliance from Nepo

Since the 1984 WCC between Kasparov and Karpov, classical chess has suffered from draw fatigue. I would prefer the the WCC to be like a 5 course meal. Each course with different time formats. Each format could have a weighted scoring system (i.e. a classical win is worth 2 full points) other formats with varying levels of say 1.75, 1.5, 1.25, 1.
For example, the championship could be arranged thus:
    Phase one: (4 gm) Classical 120/40 win = 2
    Phase two: (4 gm) 60/40 win = 1.75
    Phase three: (4 gm) 30/40 win = 1.5
    Phase four: (6 gm) 15/40 win = 1.25
    Phase five: (6 gm) 5/40 = 1
    Phase six: (4 gm) Classical 120/40 win = 2
Tiebreaker: if necessary repeat phase 5 format until there is a winner.

Rapid matches have more excitement with games ending with checkmate or player resigning and you can see how great these men are in Chess. with that said, Classical Chess still holds an edge with greater Analysis of each position before a player moves a piece which explains why there are some many draws. If two players play flawless all games would end in draws. It’s the mistake that defines greatness

just to answer agad's question: i find 10+5 best to watch.. but the actual board should really be the larger board on the screen.. but hmm i remember watching cairn's cup 2020 i think i watched every episode of that live online and i didn't get bored. it was a women's tournament over the board chess (no lockdown yet) classical time controls. so maybe if the presentation is nice, it's also nice to watch even if you have to wait long for each move.. s/o to carissa yip. iirc it was after that tournament that she got her IM title. every participant there were GMs except her. and she beat the women's world champ in that tournament too

Strong aggressive performance by Nepo sacking a piece and keeping Fabiano with few defensive options against Nepo's forcing moves and constant threats.

I love how Agadmator asks whether Classical chess will survive, now that it has to contend with other tempi. The way I see it is that chess and cricket are equivalent. Classical chess = Tests, Rapid = ODI, Blitz = T20I. Classical chess is still the ultimate examination of a player's mastery of the game, as it allows enough time to calculate many different lines deeply. Blitz is more about intuition what is the best move to play, as you don't have time to calculate that deeply. These online tournaments are fun, and the top players are so good that even at fast time controls, they are still able to play very strong moves, creating beautiful games. But Classical will always remain the ultimate test.

OTB chess will return, and probably sooner than stadium sports (for the most part). Sparse seating for the audience in attendance, with mandatory masks and gloves.
The organizer could try using an oversized board, with the players sitting farther back and somewhat elevated. They could then ask the arbitrator to move the pieces, so that there is at least 2m spacing between all three individuals.
COVID is now being squashed in a number of jurisdictions (mostly island nations) at this stage, but even in Canada (or least in my city of Vancouver), the virus is closer to being eradicated than probably anywhere else in the world for an area of similar population size and density.
I'm not saying this can happen in the next two weeks, but looking at August or September I think a number of possible venues could appear.

Classical chess is like 5 day cricket matches, except in cricket you can't memorise computer lines. Like 20:20 made cricket more exciting, rapid chess is the future because it's human v human strategy rather than memorized computer lines ending in draws

For the "completely new game" is there a way we can add all our games to this database? Do Pogchamps games get added to it? Or does it have to be elite players?

In the age of computer engines, there really need to be way more rapid tournaments than there are currently. Rapid chess allows players enough times to calculate and play relatively precisely but it also allows for 'human' moves which brings tactical brilliancies into play.

Very exciting game. I honestly thought that Nepo overcommitted on the attack and Fabi has this game in his pocket. All he had to do was exchange more pieces and defend his position, which he probably would not have any problem doing if not for time trouble.
I really like great attacking games we see every day in fast chess format and for us, low rank players this chess is much more accessible as this reminds me a lot of the games I play myself (obviously not at the same level, but with the same attack at all cost mentality).

The future of classical chess is an interesting question, but I feel like it definitely has its place at least outside the top tier. At the top level I feel like it's mainly a question to be answered by the player who play at that level, I definitely understand if they find it too stale and the preparation too taxing. It seems to make sense that top level chess is mostly played with shorter time formats.

Instead of F4 couldn't bishop capture on F6 and after queen recaptures white qH5 check? That saves your light squared bishop, up 2 pawns and king is out in the open. Possible queen trade also happens after the check.

    Hey Antonio!
I had an idea for a members perk you can offer that would still allow you to keep all your content free and also further promote the idea that chess is a game for everyone, not just masters.
You can give members an opportunity to have their own games featured on the channel. Allow members to submit one of their own games to you each month, and then when the month is over, pick the most interesting members game and make a video about it.
The limit of one game per month for each member should keep the number of submissions down so you don't get overwhelmed, but you could further limit the number of submissions if this perk were restricted to, say, only the No Reverse Gear club tier and higher.
Hope you'll consider this members benefit, and keep making great content!

Rapid, or short timed chess, is always the best. Seems like if you had an hour or more per move, anyone could win. People that play everyday can beat anyone, on any given day. Fischer (and Magnus) it seems like the only one(s) that you could never fool or trick.

Classical chess is really cool for the quality it contains. There are many wild classical games! It's also the main foundation of the game. I find very hard to believe that people will stop watching this format
Rapid chess is also very good. It mixes both quality and dynamism
Blitz is also nice, but at it's own event. Time pressure really takes it's toll on game quality
    Bullet = flagging
What is unbearable is to mix this time formats on specific time format events, like deciding a World Rapid Championship on a 3+2 blitz match
