I wasn’t super excited about this year’s prompts so I was stuck trying to decide between finding a different list but being more on my own or doing inktober with everyone but feeling bored. Now I’m super excited though because my art teacher at school didn’t like the prompts either so he let me and my friends create a list for our school to use. The best part about that is I got to throw some sillier ones in there to make it fun but I’m still doing the same prompts as everyone I know.
I’m super stoked for Inktober every year regardless of the prompts. After the initial surprise of seeing the list this year, I got pretty amped again. I started learning to draw 6 years ago in September so Inktober has become my yearly challenge to stretch my creativity to fit the prompts and see what I’ve learned. I do it for me and I love it. I want to become an illustrator, so I decided to use this opportunity to design some new characters and draw their adventures. It’ll be fun!
Ok, this just "popped up" in my feed and I'm so glad it did. I plan on doing this again but I wasn't too enthusiastic with the prompts. After listening to this I have a new perspective on how to go about it. I also like the idea of using a little character in each of the drawings where I can. I often draw a little cartoon me when I'm just doodling. Might be fun to do that for 30 days. I'm inspired! Thanks for this!!
Actually, these prompts work for me. All the prompts can be metaphors for writing a book. I love the idea of telling a story, Zack. And, I do have one to tell...the travels you endure, enjoy, and despise while writing a novel! Thanks for the inspiration!
My rhino is totally going to have wings. Maybe six wings. And she will be a Queen. Or a King. Or i think if you are not inspired by a rhino, maybe you want to draw a hippo or bearded dragon instead. As long as you draw something i think you are doing inktober right. 😊
I'm happy this video popped up in my feed because I had the same frustration with this year's MerMay prompt list. So few of the words inspired me that I considered ignoring the official list. But I decided to persevere and it was for the best. I ended up loving how vague so many of the prompts were because there was so much more freedom to interpret them however I wanted. For example, "lagoon" was one of the prompts. I didn't want to simply draw a mermaid in a lagoon, so I Googled "lagoon wildlife" and came across a cool bird that lives in lagoons. I drew this bird sharing a bowl of ramen noodles with a mermaid. 😊😊
That sounds like a great solution to that problem! Yeah, I am of two minds with this, as the video kind of demonstrates. For me, who has the goal of continual self improvement - sticking to the prompts, learning how to make it work, is beneficial. If you are just doing this for fun...then, yeah, shift things! Make it fun!
@zack_feldman Thanks!! For Inktober, similar to your solution, I will be focusing on using the prompts to tell a consistent story. But instead of focusing on a single story I will be using the prompts to explore two different stories. Because I'm currently laying the groundwork for a sci-fi webcomic, one of the stories will be used to explore environment and spaceship design. The other story will be an exploration of an alternative version of Little Red Riding Hood, which will also require practicing environment design.
Every year I do this, I find the list, or at least a good portion of it dull, but I have found great value in forcing something out of them, even if it's just doing a study of the object. It may not be interesting, but it's making me draw things I usually don't, and even if it turns out crap, I will feel good about having done it. And some days the uninteresting prompt sparks an idea that's fun, even if it's a stupid pun with a stretch of a connection and no one else gets it, I amused myself :)
I’m glad I’m giving myself a lot of latitude to sketch whatever I want to for 31 days. I did a 100 day challenge earlier this year and loved it (mostly). I might use a few of the prompts, but don’t feel obliged to use them all. Thanks for your encouraging ideas! Have fun!

Since Inktober 2024 is already finished my comment doesn't matter much, but I'll just throw in my two cents anyway 'cause I have a different perspective on this, and it may interest someone :) This was my very first inktober, and I'm very new to drawing as a whole. In this context, having a set of "boring", or at least more simple prompts was actually a nice thing, since it meant the challenge was focussed on the drawing, not necessarily on coming up with what to draw. When you're still looking for your creativity, as I was, it's a lot easier to work with "binocular" that it is with "eternal", at least in my opinion :) Your drawing is also very nice, loved it!
You are correct, that is a different and still understandable perspective. Sometimes the open ended prompts favor those who have been at it for a while, and its good to be reminded of that!
I like most of the prompts. I suck at ink but I pulled out my rapidograph pens because I need the practice so this is perfect. For the binoculars, you don't even have to draw the binoculars, instead draw what you are seeing through the binoculars. For 'discover' I drew the yeast penicillin is made from. I love your view of the list. I’ve NEVER done inktober but have always wanted to. So this years list is actually exciting for me. I noticed the theme and was excited because Im able to get challenged by it. I’m going for an R.L Stine theme with the list and also connecting them together. I can’t wait to see what your little witch does in her travels 😊
Cool! Don't worry about being behind, it doesn't matter! I didn't manage to get a drawing done yesterday either, and that's fine. And the one for tomorrow will be big, and I likely won't finish it in a single day either!
I didn't know about the frustration others have on this years Inktober. I just plan to draw stuff from other indie projects base on the prompts. Slowly I'm figuring stuff out on what I can do with some, I just hope I did so before October hits. Other than that, thank you for your advices and splendid drawing.
I am, by no means, an artist, but for the last 4 years, I have participated as best I can in INKtober, but I always wrote a chapter (2k words for 2 hours) for a story or a short story (made two horror anthologies this way) and chipping away at longer chapters this time. Still working on the current one, but the prompt list did not make me want to do a horror-themed story/anthology like last year's. So when I read the prompts for this year, I saw a DnD group and I was inspired to write a story based on a group I would love to be apart of. So, ya know, something else to try and use. But hopefully they DON'T DO THIS AGAIN!!! Because it took me WAY too long to come to this decision...
I found this video by looking up the list and yeah I thought dang they're hiking themed, that's boring. while watching this I looked over the list and tried to ideate off of each prompt and like all prompt challenges you just have to get creative. I could use similar ones to outline a narrative and use outliers to draw fan art that just feels right. I could go back into my comfort zone sometimes it'll help me make it through the whole month
That all makes a lot of sense! I find that if I let myself get pushed by them, the prompts are helpful...especially the ones that don't do much for me at first.
I think the similar prompts are wonderful, because you can take your creative liberties and make it maybe a metaphor or something. This is my first year participating here’s to hoping I stick with it!!
I was having fun finding some weird interpratations for this year's prompts until I got to "Trek". I did the drawing but it wasn't fun or interesting. I'm still using the chance to draw stuff I haven't drawn before or to use different styles. The list ahead doesn't look all that interesting but I'm trying to make them valuable anyway.
Oh, well ignore the prompts then...and don't worry about the skill level, you will improve as you do them! Maybe even intentionally make the drawings goofy or ugly so they crack you up as you do them.
My first impression of the prompt list was also that the words are very repetitive. But the prompt list is a inspiration and some I will interpret very freely. Maybe I will also combine some days into one illustration. And if I really don't have an idea for a prompt, I'll have a look at the many other beautiful art challenges taking place in October.
As someone using the strategy of interpreting the Inktober prompts within a theme/subject of my own, I was annoyed by the given theme. I still am, but I am looking at the prompts again as I consider various strategies for this year. I did use a couple of random word generators to generate some possible prompt lists. One generator loved to offer 5 and 6 syllable words! None of which made my list! 😆
@@Esther-rehtsE My community has been trying to look at each of them for their specific traits...the difference between a hike, or a trek, what each implies...but we shall see! I’m not doing prompts or posting. Instead as I’m making ink art for a book I’m doing one art per day for my book! All Sept I’m prepping. Gathering reference, making thumbnails and designs and even brining the final pencils. Saving the actual inking for October.
I've doing Inktober since 2017 & this is the first time I truly disliked nearly every prompt (some even felt repetitive on the list); it felt boring & uninspiring. Though I've now made this year as a test to pump out a comic page each day & create a narrative with most of the prompts. The fun has been the challenge of making this comic (I make comics, but not at this speed or even loosely idea'd). When the month is done I'll reorder the story how I see fit & call it "Inktober: Off Trail"

In my brain, it was a dragon, and then warped into some kind of dune sand worm, mixed with the creatures from the tremors movies. I think it must have tiny arms and legs beneath the surface, haha!
I don’t understand why artists are so obsessed with Inktober and other “prompt lists”. How about just making the art you want to make instead of letting other people tell you what to do without even paying you to do it?
Good question! First of all, it is an excuse to work on something with a group that is doing the same thing. Like doing assignments in school, it can be interesting and rewarding to see what other people are doing given the same "assignment" as you. Secondly, for some, its a once in a year time for them to put their nose back to the grindstone, have some assumed accountability, and move forward. But I found in teaching, that when the prompts are not of your own genesis, you naturally step outside of your normal tendencies, and learn how to draw new things - you look up additional references, practice things from unique angles, and have more opportunities for growth. If it doesn't resonate with you, that's fine! It won't hit everyone the same way. But for many...its just fun, it is usually an opportunity for growth, and it pushes you out of your normal/comfort zone. Have a good one!
Great video. I understand why they have a list , saying that I enjoyed everyday in may much more when a list wasn't followed, mainly because I had covered the list before, but it is sometimes good to work on prompts that are a challenge to make interesting. Thinking about doing inktober though as haven't worked through that before
@@debramorrisart Cannot hurt to give it a try and see what you think! If it doesn't strike your fancy, you can try skipping or using your own prompts, or find something that works for you.
It's a community challenge. You know how humans generally like to work together to do stuff? This is an example of that. Anyone stressing out over it isn't in a good head space for social activities. Most people don't take it so seriously. We just do it to connect to each other. Heck, I've submitted half finished stuff and still got the peer interactions I wanted. It's the mental state of the individual not the event in this case that can cause problems. Most art communities are chill. Except Deviant Artist and artist on New grounds lol.
@@bleachedout805 Except that people don't work together on any other their Inktober art. They do it themselves and then post it online, with no social interaction with real human beings or other artists while they are working on it. Then they wait to see how many "likes" they get, as if it's some kind of contest. It's extremely odd to me. And whenever I look at some of this art online I never see anyone give other artists critiques of what they've posted. It's all just praise and then hoping that the artist you praised will praise your work, as well, so you'll get more likes. The age of social media has made being an artist a very weird thing. You said it yourself, "I've submitted half finished stuff and still got the peer interactions I wanted"
Okay I'm so glad I'm not the only one who thinks the prompts kinda suck this year. This is the first year I'm gonna actually try to take inktober seriously and I'm a bit sad that I don't like many of the prompts. I just sat down for a couple hours or so earlier today and brainstormed for each one of them. I think I'm going to do what you are doing and basically find creative ways to kind of elaborate on the prompts rather than force myself to do pieces that I don't care about. For "binoculars" for example, I think I'm going to do a lady at the opera with those fancy lil old-school viewing binoculars. For "remote" I'm thinking of doing a coral reef because that matches the definition of the word whilst also being different from the prompts that are kinda synonymous with "remote" 🫶🏻
Lovely. Those sound like great ways to manage the prompts. How do you feel about combining things too? I mashed jumbo and rhino into a giant underground behemoth...and got way ahead of myself and made it huge....
@@zack_feldman I think the best rules for inktober are the ones we make for ourselves. It's a challenge but that doesn't mean we can't tweak it in certain ways. If combining prompts is something that sparks more ideas and motivation than "sticking to the script" so to speak, then I say go for it! Just gotta keep in mind to not let the scale of the idea get too out of hand I suppose, lolol. Even if it does though, we can always revisit an idea later and make a bigger piece 👀 Anyways, ppl can be such purists about inktober and it's a bit weird tbh. Same with if you wanna do watercolor, or digital, or whatever medium works for you, that's perfectly fine. Doesn't necessarily have to be in ink, even if that is *literally* in the name, ya know? 😁

Never adhered to the prompt list… it‘s art, not school
Hope you have fun with it this year!
They are lazy but I guarantee I will have some controversial work that will make the prompts interesting. Anyway great vid and good luck!
Have fun with it, and thanks!
My perspective is that this year's romptsight a tislly be possible
What?
Cousin of Shai- Hulud...
They need more friends. Its dry out there...
They are pretty mid this year, I found a different one, so I'm doing that one. This is my opinion tho
What did you find? Hope they are good!
@zack_feldman they're pretty good but THE IMAGE DISSAPEARED SO I ONLY HAVE IT DOWNLOADED I CANT FIND IT ON GOOGLE 💀
What type of giant worm is that
In my brain, it was a dragon, and then warped into some kind of dune sand worm, mixed with the creatures from the tremors movies.
Even if it does though, we can always revisit an idea later and make a bigger piece 👀
Anyways, ppl can be such purists about inktober and it's a bit weird tbh. Same with if you wanna do watercolor, or digital, or whatever medium works for you, that's perfectly fine. Doesn't necessarily have to be in ink, even if that is *literally* in the name, ya know? 😁
