I learned how to salsa 15 years ago and haven't stopped dancing yet. This music gets in your soul and the rhythms make you feel gooooooood!!! 1-2-3, 5-6-7 😄😄
I was born in 1955 in Manhattan and I grew up in El Barrio de Harlem. I grew up listening to Salsa and the Fania All Stars. El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico was one of my favorite artists. Those were happy times as a teenager in Spanish Harlem. When I grew up, Spanish Harlem was mostly Puerto Ricans. We didn't have Mexicans, Salvadorans, and other Central & South Americans. I had never heard of El Salvador. I don't consider myself Latino or Hispanic. I refer to myself as a Nuyorican of Puerto Rican ancestry. Boricua all day and every day! I currently live on the upper westside in Manhattan. As an Afro Boricua, I cannot relate to Mexicans, Salvadorans, etc. If you Black and speak Spanish, these groups look at you as if you're from another planet. Then they will assume because you're Black, you must be Dominican or Panamanian. 🤣
Don't forget the Spanish strings. And especially don't forget the most marginalized: the indigenous rattles and wind instruments. But seriously, without the Spanish strings, it would not be recognizable.
So John Leguizamo was right there on East 113th Street on Park Avenue in El Barrio and nobody advertised anything? That's weird. You would think that MSNBC would have marketed him better.
Salsa music, just like culinary salsa, is a mixture of a bunch of separate flavors that are put together, separately unified. Unity via diversity. Salsa music is inclusive. It is the umbrella. It includes son, bachata, tango, cha cha, rumba, mambo, reggaeton, merengue, cumbia, and many more. If its rhythmic origins are in African percussion, it’s salsa. If there’s a style of music in the world that demonstrates what ‘e pluribus unum’ ACTUALLY means, it’s this.
@@VMan29397 I didn’t forget the ancestry of salsa music; it just was not the focus of my post. Seeing as salsa is one of jazz’s children…I think it's pretty clear jazz is present throughout the genre.

@@fasteddie9055 thanks, but being a member of the international tango social dancers community showed me that the Tango scene might be much smaller than Salsa, but it's a worldwide cultural steam shared. Last time I checked Argentina was part of Latin America too. There are festivals and marathons organized worldwide, including the U.S. It was just a question, I am not trying to offend anyone at all.
You realize all of this Leguizamo pandering isn't going to take away the fact that the Super Mario Bros. movie will most likely top 1 billion in sales, right?
Wayne Robert La Pierre is the CEO of the NRA. His function at that organization is to instigate and supervise the political reprimand of any congressional member that shows by hint or actual verbage digression from the platform of complete opposition to gun restrictions. He is proficient and successful at what he does. Imagine being able to scare the bejeebers out of a gaggle of smartly dressed, and presumned educated men and women. Furthermore not simply are they frightened, but also pliant and cowardly following his command not to support gun control. Chrildren die and he commands that congressional bowl of jelly.
The division in America started with Obama. Rush Limbaugh was right: "“If Obama gets elected president, wouldn’t it be good to just get this done, Rush, then we could end those civil rights squabbles that we’re having?” It wouldn’t do that, folks, it wouldn’t do that. It might even exacerbate them." Rush is always Right. RIP.
Yes, Limbaugh correctly predicted the ignorant and hatefilled behavior of America's white supremacist population, who he aligned himself with in every word he spoke. Then trump capitolized on that hate to get himself elected. Ultimately revealing just how racist and criminal the republican party actually is. The hangman's gallow built on the Capital grounds meant for the murder trump's own vice president, with his blessing, is now the permanent image representing the republican party today.

String instruments themselves were invented in Western Asia, but the particular string sound in Salsa and Latin American music are Spanish.

I knew the Latin music as mambo not salsa back in the 60s and 70s!
