We're not Puerto Rican.. We're Boricuas, descendants of our Taíno ancestors. The US colonizers changed the island name(Boríken) to Puerto Rico. So many ignorant people using colonizer terms.

being a PR man, Salsa music is Cuban music which I learned from Cuban Godfather (RIP)..., so IMHO We (PR's) along with the other amazing Latino culturas from the Caribbean and South America... And please never forget how Mexico was instrumental in putting the Cuban bands into their Movies because of their deep love and relationship with Cuba... So yes, in the 40's 50's 60's it was called Latin Music, then people gave its Genre name to it, thanks to the Fania and other labels and it went from there...

@rafael diaz With all due respect, please check fact your assertion.

"This style of music originated from Puerto Rico and started out being called Underground, because back in the early 1990’s it was mostly played at clubs and was not widely known".

Puerto Rico is US Colony since 1898 when the USA invaded Puerto Rico during the Spanish American War. At that time Puerto Ricans were Spanish citizens with full representation in the Spanish government. English language was imposed in all schools until the nineteen thirties however resistance was strong and Spanish was reinstated. The Puerto 🇵🇷 Rican flag was prohibited but again resistance won after many years. The history taught in schools is not exact which justifies the confusion among many Puerto Ricans. In spite of all the confusions to say it lightly we have remained a good and faithful people, and by the way our origin is mostly Spanish whether some like it or or not.
