RV6 Catted VS Catless on the Civic Type R

- How big a difference in HP does it make to go with a completely catless Downpipe vs a high flow cat Downpipe? Today we find out on my full bolt on Civic Type R! The only time in between Dyno runs was the time it took to swap out RV6 Downpipes.
I chose RV6 Downpipes because they make very high quality parts and there are few options on the market that are both ceramic coated and able to reuse the factory heat shield. Custom tune coming soon. Stay tuned!

Been waiting for this info on the Catted one. thanks for your effort! Subscirbed.
dude 406 thank you! Got more coming!
Man, these videos have amazing info!
Ben Cork thanks man. More to come!
Well I guess I'm not getting your catted DP now. Haha
Thanks for sharing and nice job.
Just sub'd, awesome content
I have 1k miles on my 19....I will be following your progress
Welcome aboard!
Btw happy belated birthday brother! I had just put on the Tomei full ti Type D and been running the RV6 catless downpipe and front pipe on the stock exhaust which sounded deep w no drone. The Tomei, holy moly it’s ridiculously loud and with the included silencer baffles put into the tips it’s still loud. I ordered the RV6 high flow catted downpipe. Hopefully this quiets it down a bit more. It’s my daily so rn it’s a 🚓 🧲 😂
Ronald Batalla Thank you! I was really curious about the Tomei Exhaust. Sounds good for sure. The high flow catted RV6 will definitely help
Mike - great video, and congrats on the content, production quality, etc. Very top notch. One question: what was the WTQ (wheel torque) difference between the two? It may have been in the video, but it went by pretty fast. Thanks, and keep up the great work.
Angelo Gouvis torque actually dropped a couple lbs but I think that can be easily tuned for a bigger gain. I hesitated using total numbers because the canned tune is too basic to illustrate what this set up can really do
I'll be doing a full custom tune coming up in early May. Then we'll really see what this set up can do. Stay tuned!
thank you very helpfull video
Cool great job nice car
Ricardo speedtype r thank you and thanks for watching!
Mike, installing a Borla exhaust this week with the Mishimoto intake. Will let everyone know how it goes.
July, i will install the Mishimoto intercooler with Injen intcooler piping.
Chris Potter sounds like a nice project you've got going. My buddy has the borla exhaust. Sounds good
either way its nice bro!
Jo Vallas definitely. Downpipe is a great mod. Thanks for watching
After watching this, I decided purchased catted. Thank your video.
Thien Tran you'll be happy you did 👍🏼
Great vid! I thought the catless would have been a lot higher BHP than you found! How does it sound with the sports cat and remus? Do you think you'll get the silencer for the remus with the sports cat or is not too loud?
The Remus exhaust makes all the difference in the world. Perfect amount of loudness with the baffle on the exhaust all the way open. Still have the flexibility to go quieter by closing the baffle. Too loud with the Catless. Perfect with the High Flow. Thanks for watching!
Hey, what was hp gains over the factory down pipe and does the high flow cat set off the check engine light? Great video!
Nuno Franco is about an 11hp gain over factory without tune. The check eine light may not come on with the high flow but I recommend using a tuner that turns that will keep the cat from throwing a cel. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the video, can you post a more detail dyno image of catted vs no-catted? Peak power is nice, but doesn't tell the full story.
bxcloud there's an image of the dyno showing hp and torque but because this was on a base tune and the rpm module they use for their dyno at Tech3 is outdated, the torque curve looks distorted. That's why I didn't really cite the torque numbers. I'll be getting the car custom tuned early May at a different Shop. Will get some solid numbers and graph for you there. Thanks for watching!
Another fine review!! Thanks for sharing the experience!! I'm glad you decided to go back to the 200 catted downpipe. From what I've learned so far, the catless downpipe introduces exhaust fumes and is noticeable into the cabin. Did you notice this inside your car? For only a 2HP gain, I don't think it's worth enduring such smells (if any) and it's more about choosing the right sound and most importantly HP & TQ gains. Glad you found the right combination that pairs well with your ride! RV6 catted looks like a win!
Mr. Tuckers I probably didn’t have it on long enough to notice a big difference in smell with the catless. Either way not worth the 2 hp difference for sure. Love RV6 products. They definitely make quality stuff!
Hey Mike, I just ordered my FP and DP from RV6. They are having a FP presale so I went for it. Is there anything you would recommend of having done while all the stuff is out of the car?
I was most likely do a turbo blanket but was trying to think of anything else. I don't plan of pulling all the stuff back out until I decide to sell.
Also, did the sound change dramatically when you changed the catted DP and FP?
jim payne it is a dramatic sound difference with the down pipe change catted or not. You'll love it. If you haven't already I would recommend getting an intake and a tune. Intake needs to be removed anyways so might as well put in a new one and definitely a turbo blanket. The ptp fits nicely under the stock heat shield which I wanted to retain. The tune you'll need to keep the check engine light gremlin from showing up.
@@GridZilla Yup I'm running KTuner Stage 1 already. I started pulling this apart and it wasn't super fun to be honest. I think I'm going to throw on an intake while I'm at it. I don't want to have to do this too many more times. Thanks for the feedback.
jim payne I don't blame you lol no problem
Nice to see the differences Michael , I was thinking , keep my standard exhaust and just change the downpipe , or do you recommend changing the lot ? I just don't want it to loud inside the cabin ,Thanks 👍
pal wri that's exactly why I got the Remus exhaust. Loud when I want. Quiet when I want but you can definitely run the downpipe with the stock exhaust. It will for sure bring in a nice growl without being loud
@@GridZilla
Michael who did you buy your Remus from? I have been looking at that exhaust for awhile now and hoping to get a couple pennies off when I buy. Thanks.
jim payne directly from Remus. I have a hook up there. Email Michael@remususa.com
Mention my Channel name. He'll hook you up
@@GridZilla Thanks for the info Michael ,I will try a sports cat DP first and go from there ,see how it sounds ,look forward to seeing your next Stage of the mapping , see what HP numbers you can really pull in . 😎
@@louchapuk Me too! Thanks for watching
Need a good tuner around the Bay Area. Who’s your tuner if you don’t mind me asking. I have the PRL IC, charge pipes, PRL intake. Will be getting a catted DP and FP soon. I’ve seen you around town a couple times too. I know the spot you go to make your videos by the water and tracks. It’s a nice spot. Thanks
Stue Toots Anthony Medina at Hybridworks in Vallejo does all my tuning. Highly recommended 👌🏽
Michael Baxi Media Thanks. I’ll keep that in mind when I’m ready to get off the Hondata OTS tune.
Hey I have a Remus exhaust , stock front pipe , stock down pipe
How’s the drone with the dp install ? And how’s the catted dp from rv6 ? Is it any good
Definitely some drone and rasp with a cat less dp. Little to no done with the RV6 catted dp. RV6 makes the highest quality stuff in general for the FK8
Michael you going to Eibach meet in Fontana raceway here in Socal this coming Saturday l?
Calilaker CAGLS wish I could but no I won't be at that one. Have track day setup in May though. Keep an eye out for the video. Thanks for watching!
so if i get the catted dp rv6 when i upload the base map on the options do i pick the one that says rv6 high flow cat or the one that says rv6?
High flow cat
thanks for the info bro!! now that the e85 flex fuel available! are you planning of getting one before doing a costume tune??
Let's just say that I've made some other not so smart financial choices that I will be sharing with all of you so stay tuned!
Have you heard of the brand PLM? I am trying to buy their downpipe for my 2.0t accord.. and their downpipe is for the type R and they said it fits my accord
jrock Chee it does but you probably won’t be able to reuse the heat shield
@@GridZilla they said I can actually... I emailed them... They said stock heatshield is reusable... Thank you tho.
I’m still resisting that KTuner. 😂 My wheels did come in. Should be installed by next week.
Judo get it! 😂
Get hondata
Tyler T Looking at both. I just want a safe program. I’ll probably never track. Just possibly autocross for some fun runs. Probably my next purchase if lowering the car isn’t necessary.
Judo I went with Ktuner because you don't need to drag a laptop with you everywhere you go. You can save 5 maps to the module and flash as you desire
I wish I went with hondata because of traction control and flex fuel maps
Is the heat shield necessary on the downpipe I installed a catted RV6 dp on my si and forgot to take the heat shield off
Keith Begley not necessary for most street driving. If you track then it’s 100% necessary
I’m probably going to go with a high flow catted dp being in Socal. Michael you have any hookups for a discount at RV6?
Calilaker CAGLS talk to Miguel at Pristine Parts
Michael Baxi Media Ok I’m already his customer bought my wheels from him, thanks!
Calilaker CAGLS nice!
Have you had any issues with the catted rv6 as to date? Any updates?
Zero issues! Love the RV6 Catted Downpipe. Definitely one of the better bang for buck upgrades. I would however say that for my tastes I love the sound but if I had to live with the added volume 100% of the time I might find it difficult but the Downpipe paired with my Remus exhaust is a match made in heaven for me.
Just wanted to ask if the catted downpipe will smell gas like the catless or not?
It is kinda stinky
Hello, I have a research now, My FK2 stage2+ has catless DP + Stock exhaust, droning too much at highways. I want to eleminate totally cabin noise from exhaust, Is it okey to use universal hi-flow cat or what if using paralel 2 high-flow cats with Y connections, will it harm engine ? Also i want to upgrade my exhaust to 3" with good silencers for less restrict my engine without noise. Please answer. Thanks.
Uygar KAYA get the HKS Legamax. Great sounding exhaust. Not loud. No drone
Thanks for replying. It need highflow cat for complete right ?
Uygar KAYA yes.
Hey did you have to retune for high flow cat , or does it not matter on the tune ? I am running hondata but I don’t see a mapping for high flow cat with intercooler and also intake
GLOgangNoSquad the base Hondata map with Downpipe is fine but I always recommend a custom tune
Can we get some clips of the exhaust with the catted downpipe?
Power Stroke going to do a follow up video highlighting the new sound soon
Awesome cause I have the same exhaust and really would like to hear different clips with a catted downpipe
are you gonna take the downpipe off when you get the car smogged?
Probably
What r ur thoughts on Martelius exhaust for Type R?
JokerHarley05 I have approx zero experience with that syste. But what I can tell you is if I had 3 other Type r's I needed an exhaust for. All the are getting Remus
Thanks for the honest response. TBH, ur ride sounds so much better than ur Remus video. Don’t know if it was the wind factor but sounds meaner 😈
JokerHarley05 its the down pipe with the exhaust combination
@@HyperInvest210 I'm getting the Martelius. I've listened to literally every exhaust for the FK8 on youtube and I think it's best. The fk2 should sound the same as the fk8 so watch some of those vids as there's a lot more! 👍
do you not have cats in your front pipe still?
Front pipe was also replaced with the Remus Front pipe so no cat
Did you heat wrap or reuse the heat shield
Lava blanket with heat shield
Hmmm, would have thought you'd be making around 370-390 WHP with all those mods. Or are you still planning to get a custom tune in the near future?
Aaron Ticzon custom tune is coming. I'm guessing around 350hp because of garbage 91 octane gas. All the numbers in the range you are talking about are on 93 octane. Getting it done early may.
What is difference between stock downpipe and high flow cat downpipe ?
Fedja Drndarski the cell count is much higher on the stock dp and the pipe diameter is smaller.
@@GridZilla I know that, I asked what is power difference between stock DP and catted?
Fedja Drndarski approx 12whp
@@GridZilla Thanks for info. 👍
broski will that fit into the invidia r400 exhaust ?
It should
@@GridZilla thanks for taking the time to reply
@Jo Bossman HELL YEAH broski
What was the HP difference between stock and the high flow cat?
About 11hp to the wheels without a real tune. Should be more with a custom tune which I'll be getting in May
@@GridZilla Can you not get an off the shelf map for the sports cat or decat? I had some software called MHD on my previous m135i and that offered different maps for the different mods! I'm surprised Hondata and the like don't offer it!?
@@7yellowcard7 I am using the off the shelf map but all it really does is make sure the Check engine light doesn't come on. Doesn't tune any more aggressively to account for the freeier flowing down pipe. You'll naturally gain more HP but won't realize the full gains without a custom tune which I'll be getting done in early may.
Do you have drone in cabin
Ben Patrick with the Catless yes. Mainly under load in 6th gear.
Less so with the high flow cat but still there a little.
Zero drone with the baffle closed on the exhaust.
You should be making more power with those mods buddy. Intake and tune and down pipe based on those items website stats... Seems like should be more power.
Mu7 every dyno is different. Not chasing dyno numbers. Just results in track
With strict emissions and as a California resident, I assume catted is the way to go
Mr. FredRice for sure
Bad news, Mr. FriedRice, non-OEM cat won't fly with the Cali Smog Nazis (a.k.a. CARB). Even if you meet tailpipe emissions, no joke. You could still be fined, if you get caught. CARB is one of the things I don't really enjoy about living in Cali. However, I plan on running a catted RV6 on my CTR (soon) because: (1) Avoid the nasty un-catted exhaust smells, (2) it's the right thing to do for the environment, and still make good power, and (3) sound is a little less raspy than the uncatted.
Angelo Gouvis the risk you take living in Cali
@@angelogouvis1885-Hi, so is there an oem catback dp availible that will give a little more hp and still sound better with a little more growl?
@@forrestbashaw1455 : I haven't read the CA vehicle code lately, but from what I understand, any modifications to the emissions control system is strictly verboten. Just to clarify, OEM means Original Equipment Manufacturer (in this case Honda), who only makes the one type of catted downpipe (which came with your vehicle).
Does it cause check engine light?
Nope
With a catted DP any issue with the emission check?
Guillermo Martinez if you mean smog check then I haven’t tried yet.
Yes the smog check!! I hope there is not any problem to pass it . Bc im about to get a catted DP. By the way what city Are you from ?
@@GuillermoMartinez-ic9rk Bay Area I shuffle between Hercules and Oakland
Nice not far from where i live , i live in San Rafael !!
How bad was the smell when you had made the car catless? I need to know! Please get to me as soon as possible :)!
Shinobi I didn’t stay catless very long but not bad at all on this car because it burns pretty clean
Michael Baxi Media oh really? I thought it would be worst?
Shinobi every car is different
Michael Baxi Media so if I were to be catless should I even worry about the “strong” smell?
Shinobi everyone’s different. Might be too stinky for you
my Type R has 320 HP stock here in Germany
MRecke7 that's at the crank not the wheels. If you measured your vehicle hp at the wheels your probably be around 300hp
how do you have all of those mods and only 320hp?
patryk jablonski every dyno is different. The important number is the gain over stock. Car dynoed right around 260whp stock. So with these mods I game 60hp over stock
Michael Baxi Media ok that makes much more sensec
Is not that much over stock cat neither, try that one when you get a chance.
Catted is the way to go. Not much difference between the catless. Plus the catless doesn’t sound good at all. 😂
After listening to exhaust comparisons between catted vs catless, we decided to go with a catted DP with a high flow cat in our turbo cobalt, plus the benefit is there is no highway drone, and the car is quiet when we want it to be... Even has some nice popping and crackling without sounding tinny, raspy... Still have stock exhaust on from the resonator back...
go get hondata or ktuned then do the same test.. i doubt you will get the same results.
Luis Cheong already have Ktuner. Only using a base map. That's why the gains aren't as good as they could be. Getting a custom tune next month
If a dealership sold me the CTR at Invoice ($34k) I would first get this.
1)Ktuner V2
2)Eventuri Intake
3)PRL IC
4)PRL Front&Down pipe (Catted of course)
5)Fi Exhaust full exhaust.
Any other supporting mods if you want to call it mods, such as Heat shields and heat blanks for the turbo and Manifold since it does create a lot of heat under back to back pulls.
Francisco Gastelum sounds like a fun project
Francisco Gastelum Just go with the new high flow cai PRL is releasing.
Catted sounds way better!
Totally agree
