  • Can you help me identify this antique engine?
    I stumbled across this 1948 (I believe) Briggs and Stratton Model NS a few months ago. After doing some research, I think this might be a bit of an oddball engine - Plenty of Model N's, NP's, or NR's, but no NS's. It would appear that the "S" stands for suction carb - and as you can see this engine has the "newer" style carb that sits on top of the gas tank instead of a higher tank that allows for gravity feed to the updraft carburetor. At first I thought someone had adapted a newer tank to this old engine, but that doesn't appear to be the case.
    This video is dedicated to one of my favorite people in the whole world - Don Hayes. Taught me more than I ever needed to know about engines, and that knowledge and skill gained in his shop has paid for itself many times over.
    Follow along as I disassemble, clean, sandblast, paint, and reassemble this beautiful antique engine!

    Back in highschool i had an agg class and part of our grade was rebuilding small engines, went out the farm and grandpa gave me one of these to take into school and rebuild. Shoulda seen my teacher's face when i came in with it 🤣 I got it running again and still have it. Haven't started it in years but i bet it'll fire up if I messed with it.

    Nice Job, Just Subscribed! I also heat the block to remove any contaminants from the surface. Paint dries faster too!

      Thanks! Don't remember when I discovered that but it was at least 20 years ago. I use it for everything. Usually works pretty good... Unlike in my last video, where I almost burnt the shop down...

      I believe I found this one on Ebay. It was just a hair bigger than the original but it was very close, I'm happy with it.

    Is it fair to ask how you went about painting it? It looked like you did some preheating and then used a matte spray paint for the block and a normal gloss spray technique for the shroud. I grew up preparing small Briggs but have never done a restoration until now. Not sure what types of paints to use.

      Yes! I *LOVE* rattle cans. There are some easy ways to get a little better finish- my hack is to heat the surface just a little. Takes a little practice to get it just right. I go over my painting "cheat codes" in this video: ruclips.net/video/bquxP3q4BwM/видео.html

    Nice job on the video! I never knew the gasket kit would have a B&S sticker with it. That's nice! I followed pretty much everything, but I was a little confused on how the gas cap came into the picture.

    • @RustyPhoenixMotors
      @RustyPhoenixMotors  2 года назад

      The sticker was extra, but I believe it came from the same company I ordered the gaskets from.

    I'm working on one right now
    How did you get the flywheel off?

    • @RustyPhoenixMotors
      @RustyPhoenixMotors  6 месяцев назад +1

      If I don't have a puller, my trick is to use a little heat, a little PB Blaster, and a soft dead blow (shot filled) hammer. They can be really tricky. Pounding on a flywheel is never a good idea- it can cause cracks and the flywheel can have a nasty come-apart when running if it has any cracks in it.

      @@RustyPhoenixMotors Thanks man, got it off!

      Glad to hear it! While you're in there, the date code should be stamped on the back of the flywheel. 2 numbers. Mine was 48- for 1948. Kinda fun to see!

      @@RustyPhoenixMotors Yes that is neat to see. This engine is dated 1950, 8 yrs older then I am!

    • @RustyPhoenixMotors
      @RustyPhoenixMotors  2 года назад +1

      I don't know what this one specifically was used for. Water pump, lawn mower, go cart, cement mixer, who knows! It doesn't run yet. Originally I just wanted it to sit on a desk, but planning on getting it running for a future vid.
