1974 Briggs & Stratton 3HP Motor Restoration [Part 1 of 2]

    / @ajrestoration A while ago I found two of these motors at my local recycling yard.I brought them home and thought they would make great restoration videos for you guys. This one I will keep its original white color, the other motor I will restore at a later time and it will be made black.
    This motor was made in 1974 according to its serial number and has a 6 to 1 reduction gearbox. I suspect this was on a lawnmower or maybe some kind of equipment (duh)

    Some history on the Briggs & Stratton company.
    Launched in 1908 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the company is based today in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. Briggs & Stratton engines are commonly used on lawnmowers, as well as pressure washers, electrical generators, go-karts, and a wide variety of other applications. Their original cast-iron engines were known for their durability, but the company's success was established following the development of lightweight aluminum engines in 1953. The aluminum engine was the perfect solution for the recently invented rotary lawnmower due to its lighter weight and lower cost.
    The company started in 1908 as an informal partnership between Stephen Foster Briggs and Harold M. Stratton. S.F. Briggs was born in Watertown, South Dakota, and graduated from South Dakota State College ((SDSC) now South Dakota State University) in Brookings in 1907. The idea for his first product came from an upper-level engineering class project at SDSC. This first product was a six-cylinder, two-cycle engine, which Stephen Foster Briggs developed during his engineering courses at South Dakota State. After his graduation, he was eager to produce his engine and enter the rapidly expanding automobile industry. Bill Juneau, a coach at South Dakota State, knew of Briggs' ambition and the entrepreneurial interests of Harold M. Stratton, a successful grain merchant who had a farm next to Juneau's farm, so he introduced the two. In 1922, their fledgling company set a record in the automotive industry, selling the Briggs & Stratton Flyer (the "Red Bug") at record low prices of US$125-$150.
    Eventually, Briggs and Stratton settled on manufacturing automotive components and small gasoline engines. Briggs purchased an engine patent from A.O. Smith Company and began powering early washing machines and reel mowers as well as many other types of equipment. The company went public on the New York Stock Exchange in 1928.
    During World War II, Briggs & Stratton produced generators for the war effort. Some pre-war engines were made with aluminum, which helped the company develop its expertise in using this material. This development, along with the post-war growth of 1950s suburbs (and lawns), helped secure Briggs & Stratton's successful growth throughout the 1950s and 1960s.
    Stephen Briggs went on to purchase Evinrude and Johnson Outboards and start the Outboard Marine Corporation. Frederick P. Stratton Sr. (the son of Harold Stratton) served as Chairman of Briggs & Stratton until his death in 1962 (Harold also died that year). Frederick P. Stratton Jr. served as Chairman until his retirement in 2001.
    In 1995, Briggs & Stratton sold the automotive component business. The resulting company is Strattec Security Corporation.
    In 2000, the company acquired its consumer generator business from the Beacon Group and formed Briggs & Stratton Power Products. The Beacon Group had previously purchased the Consumer Products Division of Generac Corporation (now Generac Power Systems) in 1998. In 2005, the company added Simplicity Manufacturing Inc, and Snapper, Inc, to the Briggs & Stratton Power Products line. Murray, Inc, one of its largest customers, collapsed owing to the company's $40 million, and to minimize the loss Briggs & Stratton purchased the name, marketing rights, and product designs of that company. In 2008, Briggs & Stratton announced it would be acquiring the Victa Lawn Care business from GUD Holdings Limited Australia for A$23 million.
    In 2019, Briggs & Stratton announced they would be closing their engine factory in Murray, Kentucky with production being moved to their Poplar Bluff, Missouri facility.
    On July 20, 2020, Briggs & Stratton filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. KPS Capital Partners would purchase a majority of the company stake for $550 Million.
    On September 22, 2020, KPS Capital Partners closed on the acquisition of Briggs and Stratton. This sale waives the $900 million that Briggs owed going into bankruptcy.

    First engine I ever rebuilt was a 3 HP B&S in shop class in junior high in 1968. Great video.

      Did the same in 1979…..resulted in a life long ability to work on all kinds of things, not just small gas engines. Probably the most useful class that I ever had.

      My experience was 1978, high school shop class. Needed half a credit for graduation.
      I was the only girl in the class, and I ran circles around the boys. They missed putting the valve lifters back in, on reassembly. That was on the one day I missed class. I found them in the parts tote, and reinstalled them myself.

    My dad worked a few of the old 1970's and 1980's series Briggs motors when I was a kid. Both the 3, 5, and 6 HP ones. One of the scrap 6 HP ones he restored eventually went into my first go kart back in 1997. He restored/customized the engine to produce a little bit more power and torque. Added a slightly bigger sprocket for more top end speed. I got one of those bicycle speedometers and I remember the fastest I went on a go kart was around 52 MPH on the road. It was a bit dangerous from what I remember. Didn't wear a helmet and the go kart didn't have a roll bar. It was one of those classic style 60s type go karts. Was a lot of fun, but sold that go kart back in 2001 because I kinda grew out of it. Lot of memories for sure.

    Loved the video, have a 3hp Briggs for power ladder. Had gas in oil after 25 years.Runs pretty good, trying to sell it, power ladder.

      I hate these carbs from Briggs & Stratton. I retrofit a Honda carb and be done.

      @@AJRestoration You should just do what I did this week and find a shelf with 4 of them brand new in the box with the "READ THIS BEFORE OPERATING" tag still on the gas cap and everything, whole cleaning out a hoarders disgusting shop .
      Also found 2 Tecumseh 6hp in the box.😁

    that engine seems to be a fairly nice , low-hour survivor ..even considering that the previous owner ( obviously a cotton-headed ninny-muggins ) failed to change the oil regularly , which is crucial in these small oil-splash lubrication engines

    Looks good so far! Just as you do all the mechanical stuff to this remember that this is a Kool Bore Briggs and honing the cylinder will destroy it! Don't want to ruin your restoration by doing that! Just clean it up as best you can without honing and call it a day! Also if you need other parts like Rings and whatnot I have a really good parts guy you can contact!

    I haven't seen many flying pigs in my time but I can say I've seen a flying "Briggs". It is official I'm weird I found the sight of small particulate matter disappearing up a vacuum tube to be almost as satisfying as the rest of the video.

    Just bought a Kees walk behind that I think has the SAME style mower, maybe a larger HP, it is locked up, I will watch this CLOSELY when I begin to take apart, MAY have some questions in the future

    Why did you not measured valve clearance before dismantling the engine????? Easy to grind needed amount material of the valve head before assembly.

      Because the valves will be lapped, that will be done in the assembly stage, making it useless to measure the valve lash before the dismantling.

    Looks like the engine 2guys were building when I was in Vocational Agricultural school in the 10th grade in 1985 and they forgot to to torque the connecting rod to the crankshaft and when they started it up and reved it it came loose and blew a 4 inch hole in the crankcase. No one got hurt but it sure scared the crap out of everyone !

    All my growing up kid years in the 70's I had to mow the law with a 60s Wizard 22 Walk Behind Lawn Mower, 3 HP B&S almost identical to this one but with the down shaft. Green deck, white motor 4 wheels and a push bar and I mean there was nothing else on the mower. not even a grass guard. It was left outside and we kept the motor covered with a 5 or 7 gallon bucket that fit perfectly over the motor. It never failed to start in 10 years and we were the 2nd or 3rd owner.

    When you shock the parts and spray them, is that powder coating? Would you possibly do a tutorial on that process one day?

      I could do that yes, and yes it is powder coating. I shock the parts mainly to see if I switched the device on.

    I can't find the right coil pack for this type of engine any help would be greatly appreciated

      Ebay should have a few new old stock. Most of these coil packs fit universally so a 2hp coil will fit the 3hp. Just make sure the shape is the same as your old coil.

      @@AJRestoration Ahh.. back in the day when Briggs made everlasting engines. Me and my grandfather used to tear down motors just like that one all the time. We used them to pump water for cattle.

    I used to work on these all the time, the first thing I'd do was throw away the carb and gas tank and build an adaptor to use a tecumsah carb so it would run better and less maintenance cuz Briggs carbs suck

      Briggs carbs suck! I agree with you there. Especially the carbs that use the diaphragm (I hate those)

      @@AJRestoration you'd fix it and a month later they'd be back with the same problem and if you ran it wide open no how brief it would blow out the diaphragm which meant they were no good for anything beyond a pushmower
