    Excellent analysis, you hit the nail on the head Elite. I've been watching NASCAR for over 40 years and I swear the last 10 years has been the worst coverage ever. I miss the days of Ken Squire, Ned Jarret, Bennie Parsons, Chris Economaki, Dale Jarret, and the old Darrell Waltrip and Mike Joy with Larry Mac. Those times NASCAR was treated as a serious competitive sport and not a clown show on wheels. We also need the Speed Channel back, it was great for watching not only NASCAR but other forms of racing as well.

    I recently tried watching NASCAR for the first time since probably 2004 or so. It drove me insane how bad the broadcast was. I found an old broadcast from 2001 just to see if it was nostalgia talking but nope, that broadcast was so much better. The shots of the action and the way the sound was mixed really captured the excitement of it. Even the pre-race segments were done in a way that got me pumped up and got me invested in what was about to happen. They simply just don’t care anymore. It’s a sad truth in most industries these days, and even in broadcasting it applies way more than just Fox’s NASCAR coverage. Most people just don’t seem to take pride in their work anymore and it shows.

    The attempts at comedy are insulting because it shows that everyone involved in the broadcast think people tune in to watch and listen to THEM, instead of the action on the track.
    The race is the product, but much like an umpire with a huge ego, the people in the booth become the center of attention.
    I also agree about that stupid ticker. It's way too big and distracting, and it takes forever to show where everyone is.

    • @jeffreyroth7517
      @jeffreyroth7517 Год назад +16

      Agreed 110%. Like after the race, when we want to hear from 2nd through 5th. Or the guy who's mad because he got wrecked. Nope we get to listen to Mike Joys recap of the race with Clint agreeing like he's his little brother standing next to him. I could care less about his opinion. Let the drivers tell us why they had a problem withanotherdriver, how they made a move work, etc. We have to wait for youtube or someone on twitter to give us the details on what happened.

    • @trainofthough0242
      @trainofthough0242 Год назад +3

      Well, they kinda are the center of attention. The broadcasters are there to entertain and not only give you the play-by-play but make the race even more interesting and engaging for people watching. That's literally their job. And a lot of times during a long race, there's nothing much happening on track and that's when the broadcasters come in and try to fill the void for better or worse. No different from any other broadcasters for any other kind of sport. There's not always going to be exciting action on track and that's where the announcers come in.
      If you don't want to listen to the broadcasters, then you have the option to watch the raw satellite feeds and you won't have to deal with any commercials either. Two birds in one stone.
      As far as the ticker, the slow scroll that was used back in the 2000's was so much worse. It'd take forever for it to cycle through the whole field and know where everybody is and it gave you less information and outdated split times from the lap prior. Now, you get to see 20 cars positions all at once. Yeah, it takes up more of the screen but it gives you so much more information now and you can follow who's coming up through the field and who's running fast just by the ticker alone. Definitely far better than what we had before and has definitely made watching more engaging.
      I've always preferred FOX over NBC as far as recent years go. NBC's booth just gets annoying very quickly for me, everybody in the booth just talks a million miles an hour especially Letarte, it reminds of watching the WWE where the announcers are yelling and talking fast to constantly keep your attention, it's too much for Nascar though. NBC tries to appease more towards the younger audiences I feel like while FOX is more traditional and does it the old-school way. Gordon was a snoozefest in the booth which was a common complaint when they had him and I think them getting Bowyer was their solution to make the booth more interesting. Say what you want about Bowyer, but he's definitely fitting the role that he was hired to do, replace the void and character that was DW. A color broadcaster and he's definitely adding some color.
      Best Nascar booth of all-time was NBC I believe in the early 2000's. Allen Bestwick, Wally Dallenbach and Benny Parsons. Also TNT when they picked up Nascar in the summer for a few races back in the day with the same Hall of Fame booth NBC had. That was the best.
      I get the complaints, there's always going to be people complaining about the broadcasts, but I feel this whole surge of FOX hatred is really exaggerated and blown out of proportion. Once we get NBC back then we'll just get all the people who don't like NBC complaining. Always a lose-lose scenario when it comes to Nascar fans' hyper-criticism. Always finding something to complain about it feels like and right now FOX is just the target of choice.

      Revisitng this (cause Fox keeps embarrassing themselves), but I watched a comparison between an NBC and Fox broadcast in the past year, and I can tell you it's a lot more on Fox than the crowds themselves. Because when NBC is broadcasting, you can hear the crowd well. Atlanta and Pocono last year it was very audible on the broadcast. Of course NBC does turn up the crowd noise, but crowd noise is still very possible.
      Fox just never turns up the crowd noise which I absolutely hate. Obviously, I know crowds will never get back to their peak size, but if NBC can do it, then that doesn't excuse Fox.

    I love rewatching random old races as backround noise. The commentary in those 2001-2008 days had electricity to them. The sport was still surging in popularity in the early 2000s and I wonder if that helped them with production and such.

It could be cleaned up a bit, but I think it's WAY easier to follow than the old scrolling ticker, which was very dated and difficult to follow since it usually scrolled too fast, updated too slow, the updates couldn't be seen most of the time, and it had very little relevant information, especially for new fans. Now it's arranged like a video game scoreboard, which a lot of viewers, young viewers especially, are already familiar with. It would be even less of a problem if they framed each shot properly and made it so the scoreboard doesn't obscure what's happening on track.

And I will say this about NBC, go listen to a Fox race and then listen to an NBC race, the cars on NBC sound like your listening to what they hear in the booth, like the track audio is an after thought. I don't think they'll fix it. One last thing. They know they're getting heat for all of the ads, so now they say it's the last break, or the last sided by side. But they lie. They have a big wreck after saying that and instead of listening to all of the talent they have talk about the race, they break after they said we'd seen the last break. I'm so glad to see the post, maybe just maybe NASCAR will see it and tell the networks ENOUGH!! Dale Jr said on his podcast "we're missing shit"!!! I recommend that NASCAR and the networks watch an F1 race and TRY to emulate that. It is a wonderful 3 hours and that don't tell you how cool F1 is in a commercial because there aren't ANY. Covid was almost a death blow to NASCAR, more gimmicks won't fix it. Like the coliseum race, it's way to small a track so stop it. And it was overshadowed by being forced to listen to a has been rap concert. Don't get me started on Bristol dirt, fuck that. They've ruined a Bristol race. I know, lets ice down Richmond and have an ice race. Dumb asses...

    The days of 90s coverage into early 2000s were the best. But it's nothing but a joke, now. We don't even get to see them celebrate in victory lane like it's suppose to be! Just total frusteration!
    I need to add that I grew up in the 80s of Nascar Racing. I was so use to CBS/TBS coverage with Ken Squire, Neil Bonnet, and Ned Jarrett and then with ESPN/ABC's coverage with Bob Jenkins, Benny Parson, Ned, Dr Jerry Punch & John Kernan that I took them all granted! To me, those two groups were the pinnacle of broadcasters and pit reporters that knew how to call the shots professionally without sounding obnoxiously annoying.
    I still go back and watch some of those old races and there is clearly so much more excitement and on the spot commentating back then, that these guys now need to take a page from that old book!

    One thing you didn't mention that has become a problem is that they only have 2 pit reporters (outside of the 500). I think that has hurt the broadcast in a massive way as well. Back in 2001, they had 5 pit road reporters and that made a massive difference in relaying messages to the booth. I feel like you need to have 3 at least, but 4 would be more optimal.

    The thing with Bowyer is he had that level of excitement in 2021 with Gordon. Sure it was a bit on the hokey side, but it showed some promise in terms of energy and if refined he could be a solid fill in for DW. I have no idea if they took him back in 2022 and asked him to dial it back cause it's such a drastic change and it doesn't sound bored, it sounds like he's being cautious. He did good with Gordon, but he's got almost nothing to show with Joy and the rotating broadcasters. Harvick and him do mesh decently however, so I would give him 2023 and if nothing's still materializing then it's time to relegate him to the studio or as a reporter on pit road (Bowyer is my favorite driver, so you can imagine my dejection that he hasn't panned out)
    Outside that yeah, the cartoons trivialize the talent, the jabs at "keyboard warriors" are pompous, and the commercials are dreadful. I get that NASCAR's advertisements have dropped significantly, but the times you see an ad repeat twice in a row is alarming. I still remember in 2021 this ad for a vehicle that starts with "Why am I so calm right now" repeating THREE. FUCKING. TIMES in a row for the 500. Forget Coca Cola Zero Sugar, forget BUSCHHHHHH, forget Geico, there is no reason an ad reel should be this botched. The shameful thing is that big name companies have offered to strike a streaming deal like Amazon and there's this anxiety that older demographics won't watch. Yes there may be a slight drop, but it's not like the boomers don't have kids that will happily help set up a stream for them and the opportunity for growth is tremendous given F1's surge recently
    Great breakdown, hope to see more

    And no yellow flag wins, that is as bad as football ending in a tie or a boxing match ending in a draw.

    As someone who grew up loving wrestling, I learned one big thing: everyone hates the announcers if the show sucks. If the wrasslin is good and people like the stories, the announcers are great. Nobody wants to hear someone tell them they’re watching the greatest show in history if they’ve been hating it. Idon’t think the announcers are really a problem, with the exception of Gordon who was just unfathomably bad. You hate the announcers because they’re selling a product that stinks. You can change all of them and it’s not going to fix anything unless the show itself gets better.
    It’s the same reason the commercials are so annoying. The product sucks so bad and the networks got taken to the cleaners so bad on the last tv deal that they have to do desperate and shitty things to sell advertising and salvage their investment. So instead of caution flag commercials you gotta have commercials during the action so people will be forced to watch them. If the audience wasn’t so pathetic and they were doing better, they could ease up on a lot of the ads and still make money. Fox probably lost 9 figures on this tv contract, so they don’t have a choice on ads.

    If you want to see a great broadcast, look at a race in the early 90's on ESPN. Bob Jenkins, Ned Jarrett, and Benny Parsons were the Mount Rushmore of race broadcasters. I think Fox has paid attention on some things - they even broke out of a commercial for a wreck last weekend. But you nailed most of the problems they have. The directors need to calm down and stick with the shot longer, especially the in-car shots - let us see an entire lap at least. Stop jump-cutting every 8 seconds. The ticker and the out of sync audio are my other biggest peeves. And here's hoping that Harvick is in the booth next year. He's been great on Saturdays when he's done it. I've always muted the commercials, but this year I've been leaving it muted even when they come back.

    great points man, and absolutely hilarious delivery by the way. I'll be keeping an eye out for more of your videos. You hit the nail on the head with the timeliness of commercial breaks. I don't even care if there's a commercial break. it's an excuse to take a bathroom break and grab another beer. However, the reason we're watching and you're network is getting eyes on the screen is for a car race, so Fox needs to miss crucial points in the action. More and more people will turn to searching for streams and network ratings will suffer if they can't realize this. When F1TV was rolled out, i was happy to hand over my money because it provided a commercial-free experience I wanted. These networks will fail at their ratings goals if they don't understands the wants of the viewers and when Nascar rolls out its own streaming service, people will flock away from Fox and never look back.

    Thanks for this video. So perfectly said. They could just air the race and use MRN for Play-by-Play coverage at this point. At least the radio broadcast has to describe what is happening on the track in real time. They have been turning Nascar into a combination of the WWE and Monster Jam for nearly the past decade. It's become more about the celebrities and children attending each race, than the actual fans that continue funding this circus. We all know none of the children or celebrities are ever paying for their tickets or their merchandise. The whole interview at the start finish line immediately after their burnout is stupid and a complete pointless waste of time. It totally discredits the victory lane celebration importance. Trophies no longer even matter. Plus, there's absolutely no scruples about what content gets aired. Whenever there is an altercation between drivers, they always shove a camera or two or three even a drone right into the middle of it totally uncensored. We already know that nobody wants to be the next viral meme on social media. There's absolutely no code of conduct whatsoever to be seen. Nascar just keeps raising fines when they pick and choose who will be fined. They do this knowing that this will eventually bankrupt some teams completely out of the sport altogether. They have made disobeying authority totally acceptable behavior with Bubba Wallace's and Josh Williams behaviors. Hell, Kyle Larson was immediately suspended 6 months for saying nigga during game of iRacing. I support the use of such a word nor am I implying Kyle Larson shouldn't have been reprimanded for it either. Then he was fired and stripped of all sponsorship but absolutely None of this happened at a sanctioned Nascar event. But it's 100% acceptable for another driver to intentionally wreck another driver then exit their car on a hot track and disobey Nascar officials then assault another driver on live television and because of the difference of skin color, one driver wasn't able to defend themselves at all. All of this was immediately celebrated and used for promotion of ticket sales for Las Vegas Speedway. Bubba Wallace should have been immediately suspended the remainder of the season and Josh Williams wouldn't have got his car back until he understood the pecking order of who is in charge and what respect is What's the point of having all these people in white Nascar fire suites that say Official on the front and back of them? If drivers are allowed to totally ignore their instructions and also allowed to physically put their hands on them as well. There are no longer any limitations on a driver's behavior during a race. They continuously call each other names and curse on live television now it's encouraged for them to wreck each other intentionally and physically assault each other as well. We have grown men throwing temper tantrums on live television asking to be replaced. this is the content we are feeding to our children week after week.

      Every time I try to watch a NASCAR the stage racing ruins it. Us older fans spent years getting used to races from most series having a certain rhythm but also knowing a caution could change things in an instant. An unusually long green flag run would get you more and more interested because you start waiting and anticipating for that yellow to come out...amd sometimes it won't. Planned cautions just ruin the whole vibe.
