My mother is from the Algarve and she told me that the Medronho fruit was the fruit that women of the past used to give their husbands to calm down on the days when they were more aggressive. It is a powerful fruit that gives the famous Medronho drink 50% alcohol. You should also try Medronho jam, it’s very good.

Those are not chestnut trees, they are cork trees. As you can see, the bark of those trees is peeled off. It's from that bark that cork is made of. Portugal is the world's biggest cork producer.

If you get a chance, try the chestnuts - they are not like “nuts”. With a knife, make a cross ( X ) in the center to cut through the skin, then put them under the broiler for 15-20 minutes. Let cool, then peel and sprinkle with a bit of salt. When you peel the skin, the entire inside is solid edible chestnut - as castanhas são muito saborosas! The mechanism in the mill is powered by the water. The water turned a wooden wheel which was attached to the stone disk which was leaning up against the wall when Carol walked by to look in the ground level of the building. When it was operating there were two stone disks - one on the bottom which didn’t spin, and the second (on top of the bottom disk) which was attached to the wooden shaft which ran from the first floor of the building to the ground floor. The second stone disk (which was attached to the shaft) turned. Wheat, rye, or corn was then put in between the stone disks and was then ground by the grinding action of the two stones against each other.

The Algarve's have been very enjoyable plus it reminds me so much of where I grew up. It was the same type of streams but the trees are oak's and pepper trees with some olives that seem to grow naturally on the olives and peppers. It was just such a lovely hike and so enjoyable to watch. I loved the old tile work in the monastery and the ole mill on the hill was very neat. I loved the drone footage as it captured such a unique feel to the area, like being in Italy or Greece to a cense. Thank you Chris and Carol for such a lovely adventure through the highlands of Algarve's. Peace and health my friends, have fun

The monasteries were closed in the first half of the 1800s in Portugal, by royal decree. Most of the pastry treats in the country come from these monasteries, after the recipes were let out as a result. Think of the Pastel de nata in Belem. The cloisters are right around the corner in Belem and that is where the recipe came from. If a town has an old monastery, it is has unique pastry to that town now. For instance the Nevadas of Penacova. explorandar.com/2018/10/20/doces-delicias-a-provar-em-portugal-nevadas/

About the monastery of Monchique, once, because of something in my work I had a meeting with a person from the city hall and asked about if there was some plan of rebuilding it, and the answer I got, is that after the monastery was shut down in the XIX century, it's land and ownership was divided through some people from the village, and although there are plans to do something with it, it has shown to be an impossible task to find all the heirs of the heirs of the heirs, so their parts can be bought by the state. It is so sketchy that it was even mentioned that some people have ownership of a piece of the kitchen, some people of some square meters of a corridor, some people of a piece of the garden, etc...

    there not chestnuts :))))
They are: Bomen-trees; Quercus suber - Cork oak
Quercus suber or cork oak is originally in South Europe and North Africa where the tree is used because of its cork.
This cork is used for wine bottle corks, shoe soles, floors etc.
This peeling of the trunk is done every 10 years. After this, a dark red chestnut colored trunk remains, it can even turn black over time.
This process is repeated every 10 years.
The rough pale brown / gray rough cork layer around the trunk is a beautiful sight. The leaves of the tree remain smaller than those of the ordinary oak and are oval in shape.
Top of the leaf is black / green in color, the underside is slightly hairy.
The leaf is about 3 by 2 cm.
Actually the cork oak is much nicer than an olive tree and also very hardy.
The cork oak is evergreen in a moderate winter.
We have some cork oaks in the example garden from 2005 and these have had no problems in recent winters.
However, the leaf turns brown after a severe winter and ends in March. Hereafter, fresh new leaves appear in April. The care of the cork oak is very easy and requires almost no maintenance, pruning if it becomes too large is sufficient.
In May, the cork oak will bloom and in October the cork oak will be fruit after a good summer. Seems much like fruits of the ordinary oak only much smaller.
    Winter hardiness zone 5b (-22ºC).
