It drives me nuts when I hear younger folks today call Tesla a hair band for exactly the reason Burch said... they fought that label their entire career. I saw them open for Def Leppard in Battle Creek MI and then at the same venue a year or so later when they played the first show of their first ever headlining tour. They've had their ups and downs... they broke up in 1996 but they reformed in 2000 and have been going strong ever since. They are touring the US right now, in fact.

I saw them in June 88 on the Hysteria tour with Def Leppard. Great show and that ticket cost a whopping $27 CAD! Can't believe that was 36 years ago this June!

Agree 💯!! They, along with Great White came onto scene the very end of the Hair Metal craze (which I am a big fan of) but even though they were both very different, they were pigeonholed as Hair Metal, but were both so much more! Jeff Keith (Tesla) & Jack Russell (Great White) both had great Rock/Bluesy voices, & the bands. Great White’s all Zeppelin tribute Album is fantastic. And all of their sleazy Bluesy Rock is great.
Make sure you do Tesla’s Love Song & Little Suzi for Alexis.

I totally blame the record companies of the time. They were riding that same formula for so long and any rock or metal band that came along they said to themselves "poof the hair up." It was too bad Tesla got thrown out with the bath water when Grunge came along. They are a solid hard rock band!! Love them. I was so glad when they got back together!!

I've been a fan of Tesla since day one, met them in person, their video for the song Gettin Better was filmed in my hometown, I worked at a Hardware store across the street from where they performed the video, the tour manager came into the store for bolts, washers and nut to build the stage because the hardware for the stage got lost in travel, he needed two guys to help build the stage they performed on, me and my buddy Mike built the stage and we were invited to the video shoot and they asked us to invite all of our friends and we packed the place called The Stage in Coatesville Pennsylvania, we all drank with the band and had a great time.

Our #1 South Sacramento band! Tesla did something back then that other Sacramento bands couldn't do. They were able to get signed and become headliners without moving to LA. Frank and the boys were always into hard rock and heavy rock.....the classics, including huge Beatles fans. Here in Sacramento, we are NorCal and not into the hair band genre of the glam bands from LA. There were only a few clubs to play and you had to know your stuff. I grew up in the same neighborhood and watched them go from Earthshaker to City Kidd to Tesla. I will also never forget riding BMX bikes with Frank and scaring the shit out of him going through Oak Park! Good times.

I remember seeing/hearing this video for the first time like it was yesterday. I was at a party meeting my girlfriend-to-be. But this video came on MTV and it was like the seas parted. I saw nothing and heard nothing around me except this song! The next day I ran to the record store to get it, hurried home and proceeded to figure this album out on guitar. From beginning to end Mechanical Resonance is a class in guitar rock!
Later on Shine Away became my favorite Tesla song but Cowboy is a close second.

November 12, 1989, Tesla helped kick off what was the single most fun week of my life teenage years. That night I saw them live in concert with Great White. On Wednesday I got a new, amazing girlfriend, and on Saturday we won the State football championship. Even 33 years later, there's not much of that week I don't remember vividly.
You mentioned Tesla being lumped in as a glam band despite not really fitting the label. I remember the ads for the concert on the radio called Tesla "the last blue jean and t-shirt band." They were ACTIVELY trying to distance themselves from the glam label.

Next day I went out and bought their albums (cassettes).

Well Burch, you finally did it! You got Alexis Teslafied!!! I am a Tesla Freak, so I'm very biased about this great band. I've been watching your channel and waiting for a Tesla tune. I am now a follower after this tune. Burch, you nailed the right song to do first. Now Alexis is learning them the same way we did, discovering Tesla by Modern Day Cowboy.
Alexis, if you have one thing to do, it's go see this band live before they stop touring. Burch speaks of them in the past tense, but these guys are "Still Kickin' Ass"!!! If you don't ever listen to an 80s band again, at least go see these guys live. They are electric...and acoustic...and they ROCK!!!

My favorite Tesla moment is after I saw them on the 2014 Monsters Of Rock Cruise. I was in the Miami Airport and the section I was waiting for my plane in was almost completely deserted. All of a sudden in the section across from me, Jeff Keith with his mom and a couple other people sit down waiting for their flight. He had brought his mom on the cruise to celebrate her birthday and had brought her up on stage to sing happy birthday to her on the opening concert. I figured he had had enough of the ease access of fans on board the ship so I decided to leave him alone. His mom was kind of a boisterous lady and I could hear her side of the conversation as she was on the phone. She was hilarious. Other people that were walking by starting going up to Jeff and he was taking pictures and talking with all of them. Since they were doing it, I figured it wouldn't be that bad if I bothered him too. He was great. We took a photo, we talked, he even let me film a little hello video to a friend of mine who couldn't make the cruise. The best part was, while I was talking with him, his mother finished her phone call and came up to me and hugged me a couple times while thanking me for being her son's fan. She's an awesome lady.

Heck Yeah! Been a Tesla fan ever since I heard this song for the first time and still listen to the other albums as well, all the time. The opening lick to Modern day cowboy is very challenging to play, even harder when it's on a Fender scale length guitar and not a Gibson(shorter).
The song Gettin' better has helped me through some very rough times and one of the first songs I learned to play well on the guitar, for that very reason.
Hang tough is always at the end of my playlist when I'm at the gym and need that extra motivational pump.

During my college days i had a graveyard show on a cross-town college's radio station and one night a buddy sat in with me. He hadn't heard Tesla yet. Someone had carted "Modern Day Cowboy" and i pulled it for play. Bon Jovi's "Wanted Dead Or Alive" was all over radio at this point.
I got a huge "Ugh, not another one..." From my pal
I told him to calm down, slammed the cart in and did my live sow open and introduced the track and hit play.
My buddy became a Tesla fan at 12:08am.

Another great one is "cumin atcha live". The intro is awesome. They used to open every show with it.

One of my favorite bands. I don’t think of them as hair band. I put them in the group with Black Crowes more southern rock. Got to see them at the Zooamp in OKC. Great concert right up against the fence(front row) firehouse opened up for them. My favorite album was The Great Radio Controversy. Great story tellers don’t understand country singers don’t cover them for that purpose, but glad they don’t.

Tesla is a t-shirt and jeans band. They are unique in rock and amazing in their space. I was drawn to them in the beginning because I was obsessed with Nickola Tesla. They are underrated and Jeff Keith (vocals) is amazing.
