Ren and Chinchilla have a very special connection. He calls her his musical sibling. Definitely check out the live “How to Be Me” they did together. They also have a couple fun busking videos together - one is Marvin Gaye’s “Sexual Healing” and the other is Drake/Beyoncé “One Dance / Drunk in Love.” It was Chinchilla’s first time busking, Ren talked her into it and it was fantastic!
They just recorded a couple new songs together!! Can’t wait to hear them.

As you dive deeper into Ren’s solo catalogue, you will find many of his songs have somber lyrics combined with upbeat melodies.
Some talk about optimism or a change to positive in the verse starting But little by little, but I can't see it like that. He says in the verse he has a new habit (in order to feel better, but it just works for a while) to BURY myself with great, big, smile and the sarcasm in the voice when he says, Great, big smile, when the verse is first sang, is obvious. So to me, he is describing fake smile, the mask we put on to hide how we really feel.
It could be that way Anna. I can see it. What took me by surprise was the melody. That beautiful lift. Thank you for sharing.
@@IzzyIzenstain Yes, there is this change in the music, it gains momentum and energy, false or not, effective or not.
That makes me think of the fact that there are songs and part of songs by Ren where the music is very light, cheerful and catchy but the lyrics are rather deep and serious, without any irony involved. The seriousness of the text is earnest but you find yourself kind of cheerfully dancing to a rather somber lyrics. Probably this is done on purpose, maybe it surfs the same purpose as when you use humor to go through and recall difficult experience. Were do we need the lightness more than when things are too heavy, and we have carried them far to long.
Or it just happens without really any thought going into it. After all I don't think that OMD where intentionally thinking of making, a uplifting, fun, dance infectious song to make the subject matter, of Enola Gay, more bearable.

The best musical “siblings”. Ren has called her his sister from another mister and a female version of himself due to their similar approach to music. For me I think it shows in the fact that they both have that something special that draws you in and demands attention.
This song always reminds that one of the (many) things that makes Ren so great is his ability to know exactly when to be complex, keep it simple, or even use silence to get his message across. He isn’t flexing his guitar skills in this, just playing exactly what is needed with that beautiful guitar tone. And my favourite line in this is so simple, totally devoid of all the clever metaphors that he is so good at using, but it hits soooo hard: “I’m scared of being okay cause all things change”. I think anyone who has been through any struggles can relate to that feeling of not trusting that anything good will last. You can’t just enjoy it because you’re busy worrying about how long it will last and the feeling that will come when it’s gone. And then good days just make the darkness feel so much worse because you remember the light that’s gone… Ren is so special. He keeps being so relatable that it reminds us that we’re not alone. And we will always make room for more RENegades down the Ren rabbit hole cause we all need his light in the darkness 🐰🕳️
If you want more emotional singing from Ren, please check out one of my personal favourites: Crutch feat. Bibi. It’s an older song from before he was finally correctly diagnosed with Lyme disease and was written after a breakdown following multiple emergency trips to the hospital. It is heart wrenching and beautiful.

Chinchilla’s a fantastic singer. She has some dynamite songs of her own, and is highly creative. She’s a trained singer. Ren introduced her to busking, and they have a couple of very good busking videos you should check out, along with their live version of “How to be Me”.

We've all sat with this song for a while so we can forget what it's like to hear something for the first time and we've probably never had to explain what we think we are hearing while doing it. So I get the 'optimism' and 'hope' comments. The music lifting does that to the soul intentionally. I also think that the mood we are in when we hear something for the first time can affect the way we interpret. For me the uplift shows the fake mask we put on when we try to make people think 'everything is ok, I'm fine'. And push that hurt down with a new distraction as you pointed out so well. It doesn't have to be pills. It could be watching reactors and commenting 🤡🤡🤡.

I'm intrigued to see who it is my voice reminds you of. I'm not sure anyone ever compared it to anyone before. Used to get Kings Of Leon in my younger days, although that might have been my style over the voice. Actually thinking about it, my Dad said on I Could Be Yours that I sound like John Lennon. Maybe it's that?
And over the years my speaking voice has been compared to Ozzy Osbourne in my wilder days, and to a Peaky Blinder in more recent calmer ones. But being from Birmingham, those make sense I guess.

A song called its alright. He did a song with the same name with the big push. But thats a different song. So freckled angels w ren. While the melody goes "upbeat" for the chorus, the lyrics never do. There isn't "optimism" anywhere throughout the song. And, it's apt that there isn't. It wouldn't work quite as well otherwise.
There is that obvious contradiction between the upbeat melody (at the chorus) and the downbeat lyrics, but many seem to be tricked by the melody. I like when songs have this contradiction.
Contradictions are great. They're everywhere in life so it's nice when they show up in art. The Smiths are probably one of the best at that juxtaposition between melody/sound and lyrical content.
@@IzzyIzenstain Yes, excellent example. And, not only for "contradictions," but another key similarity between The Smiths and Ren that hit me like a ton of bricks when I first listened to Ren’s stuff: both Ren and Morrissey are nearly impossibly talented lyricists. I can't think of another artist who is this extraordinary at lyricism, not a Waters, not an Eminem, can't think of anyone else who is this relentlessly, consistently talented at coddling together just the right combination of words to express a subject (of particularly angst I suppose in both of their cases). And then the level of rhyming, especially with Ren. Hard enough to concoct the right words to express anything, hard enough to rhyme, with the obvious limitations doing so poses on what words could be used, and then to be able to do both at the same time, it’s extraordinary, again at a level that I can’t think of anyone else being able to rival. And, you feel it, viscerally, with both’s lyrics (whereas, e.g., even with Shakespeare [whether you accept that “he” was an individual or a consortium, as some consider “him” to have been] the universally recognized acme of wordsmiths, I was always left cold. Elaborate, flowery language, but devoid of substance underneath. Like a brilliant sociopath, nearly incapable of feeling love, writing effusively about it), with somehow minimal mawkishness.
Another similarity with both is that both are exceptionally talented melodists. And at that of composing melodies that are somehow significantly less “conventional” than most others who have the gift of being able to craft “hooks.” (Of course, especially in Morrissey’s case, Marr and co., as well as the many other talented musicians and producers that he had surrounded himself with, contributed significantly to the musicality. Nonetheless, the melodies remained just as gorgeous, and still “unconventional,” after Marr and he parted, so, while not being known as an instrumentalist, obviously there’s quite a bit there in terms of melodic composition just with Morrissey as well. And, with Ren, the talent with melodies, again quite “unconventional,” is rather obvious.
I love this song and boy can she sing. I get so frustrated though because when she sings she us very demonstrative which i have no problem with. But..... because of a scene in a film called jaws i have a phobia about long fingernails. So i just cannot watch her. Her nails are constantly in view and although she is gorgeous and would be lovely to watch cos i love her passion. But them nails i just xant look. Its so annoying. I love them together but dont watch them as much as i watch everythibg ekse ren has done. Because of them nails. Ahhhhh

This comment says more about you than how good Izzy sings. People shoukd only ever be hurt by bad comments that come from people they care about and respect. Old fashioned. But if you dont have anythibg good to say. Then why be the person who is spiteful for no good reason. Sad really. But hey everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
