Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark took being snubbed from the U.S. Olympic national women’s basketball team roster in stride on Sunday. She spoke to reporters at practice and made her first remarks about not being on the 2024 team. She said being left off the roster just adds to the motivation to compete to make it in 2028. "I’m excited for the girls who are on the team. I know it’s the most competitive team in the world and I know it could’ve gone either way - me being on the team, me not being on the team," she said, via The Athletic. "So, I’m excited for them. I’m going to be rooting them on to win gold. I was a kid that grew up watching the Olympics. So, yeah, it’ll be fun to watch them. No disappointment. I think it just gives you something to work for. That’s a dream. Hopefully, one day I can be there. I think it’s just a little more motivation. You remember that. And hopefully in four years, when four years comes back around, I can be there." Clark said she was looking forward to taking a little break to get her body ready for the stretch run of the WNBA season. Clark was the No. 1 pick of the WNBA Draft in April after leading Iowa to back-to-back national championship games and setting the mark for all-time scoring in college basketball. She was unable to attend national training camp in Cleveland after she was invited because Iowa was in the Final Four.

The Olympic team could not stand having a rookie draw all that attention. Caitlin could have given such a boost to women's basketball on the world stage. The attention and resulting benefits to women's basketball would have been enormous. But...jealousy knows no bounds. In just a few short weeks, she has been able to fill up arenas, gotten charter flights for the teams for the first time, and had the sports world and the press constantly talking about women's basketball. But we can't have that from a pretty, straight, white, woman. The WNBA needs to get their stuff together. She can finally bring attention to the women's game. Who knows, player salaries might also increase.

    This was a big mistake.
I was at the game in DC last night, I paid $200.00 to see a winless team play a 2 win team in the regular season game, and I along with over 20,000 others watched her and her magnetism is what was advertised. All these little girls there from DC but with her Caitlin Clark jersey, she had a great game with 30 points and lots of assists and rebounds, but it went beyond the game.
After she signed some autographs, but many people did not even leave until she left, a solo player and then there was applause as she left. People just don't get it esp. women’s basketball leaving her off that roster just cost the USA million of viewers.
I won't be watching that team this summer. I'm more of a track fan, esp. long-distance running, but I was definitely going to watch BBall. This is opposite the Isiah Thomas debacle when he was left off. No one cared because of his poor sportsmanship in that Bulls defeat, and everyone wanted to see Jordan and the rest of the dream team. Thomas did have the resume to be on that team of course, but no cared at the time.
Is Caitlin Clark as a rookie one of the best 12 players, maybe, but Caitlin does have international experience and by the Olympics she will have grown as a player, she is making great strides every game.
She is a competitor and people around the world want to see her. But unlike the Dream Team with Isiah Thomas being left off, this will cost the USA not in victory since they have been dominant, but it will cost in other intangible ways like viewership which turns into dollars and popularity and growth.
But also remember the Dream Team had Christian Laettner, so this team could have had Caitlin Clarke. I don't know how much I was bought into the hype before last night. But OMG, to experience it firsthand, she made me feel like a teenage girl groupie at a rock concert.
It's hard to explain, but she is "That Girl", and I am not a person easily impressed by other humans regardless of their status.
For this game last Friday, the Washington Mystics usually draw about 5,000 people per game and they usually play at a smaller arena, last night over 20,000 people came and many from the DC area but cheering for her.

Taurasi’s a fossil and a she of her former self, and there are 2 or 3 players who’ve been injured or are currently injured on the roster. I’m betting by the time the Olympics come around they’ll be begging Clark to join as an injury replacement. I hope the Olympic team does well. But if it doesn't, then we can wonder if it had anything to do with not putting CC on the roster. Let's wait and see.

I think the rant by Dave Portnoy was the best response. I think the WNBA and Women’s basketball is just in dire need of some wise business leadership that can take them to the next level. CC is kind of like MJ. Everyone knows she is special and to make her stay home instead of showcasing her on the world stage is insanity. As someone said there is someone that is either super petty or horribly incompetent.

You can thank the coach of the Team Cheryl Reeve. She said a lot of bad things before about Caitlin's presence. Now she is getting even more petty. WOW what a Genius.:)🙄.

I dont know about others, but this the first time Ive ever watched the WNBA. Im watching Clark, rubbing my eyes, not believing how good she really is. If she isnt on the Olympic team, there is no reason for me to tune in. Im lining up some books to read during the Olympics. Didn't order any extra popcorn & stuff for Margaritas either. Take from a non sports person. She is the only reason I tune in to *any* sport.

Olympic team selectors: "we dont want to put her on the team cause her fans will get upset about her limited minutes"
Fans of CC & WNBA: "so you think we'd be more upset at limited minutes which is more than no minutes...." Make that make sense

There is no argument for diana Tarausi. if you look at her stats for this year, she’s averaging less points assist rebounds and her actual turnover to assist ratio is worse than Caitlin Clarks. They also have on the roster, Bob Griner, who up until last night had not played a single game all year due to an injury and you also have something gray who has not played one game yet this year because she had a knee surgery. So two other players that have only played one game so far.

@@chrischance1063 wow you found ONE stat Diana is ahead of Clark. Do you not think people can read ?? D. T. Is shooting 34% from 3 and a ROOKIE who is double teamed and many times face guarded 94 feet down the court is shooting 32.7%. A whopping 1.3% better. That is like two more makes. Hmmm. The real telling stat is that Tarausi is averaging 1.6 assist per game and Clark is averaging 6.3 assists. Ummmm is a guard main job to distribute the ball???? Clark also has more steals per game more rebounds per game and surprisingly her turnover to assist ratio is much better.
Grandma Taurasi fits the DEI requirements though not the playing req.
just like Bob Griner (the smuggler) and C. Grey. Grey hasn’t played a game this season. Hmmmmm. Bob G has played in only one this season. Hmmmmm. It’s a joke for the carpet munching team and their coach.
Sad thing is it will be just like the WNBA of the past 25 years in that Nobody will watch.

@chad85100 that was alot. . DT is way more off ball than CC so CC should avg more ast. She's being blitzed, not double teamed, and she's being blitzed bc she has a history of being loose with the ball, she avg 5 turnovers a game in college, teams saw that so they pressure her. .. she's just missing shots, she's not being doubled when she's missing wide open 3s. No. She's 22, if you believe she's the GOAT she is, then she'll be more than ready for 2028 here in LA. You would think ppl would want her to finally get some rest. She looks beat, tired as she should be.. she's had great run the last 2 years.
      Dt is 42 16, 4.5, 1
      CC is 22 16, 5 ,6
      They're both horrible on defense

      @chad85100 19 дней назад

@@chrischance1063 I knew the “off the ball” / leader garbage would be used because that’s a cop out. Numbers don’t lie if you want better player. Is Clark overhyped?? Hell yeah but she is better than DT and Gray has not played a SINGLE game for what ? A year? Yeah those two picks make sense. Gray HAD great numbers but has NOT PLAYED in forever. She is just going to play a week or two and be right back to old 100%.

It seems they don’t realize there is a time limit on this. CC is great but her star is not always going to burn so bright. If the WNBA keeps going out of their way to suppress her then eventually the momentum will be lost. I give it a year, maybe 2 and CC will also be playing to normal WNBA attendance numbers. The people have very short attention spans.
