As long as she doesn't go full whatshisname from Pokemon Sword/Shield and decide the only solution is to freeze the sun or whatever because of a thing that's going to happen long past her lifetime. Because that'd be stupid.... though very in-character.

The thought that someone as caring as Shiki gave Cirno, the happiest being in Gensokyo, depression is something to think about.
Good example of how sometimes good intentions aren’t enough
Oh dang, I just thought Cirno was basically just the comedy funny haha fairy in the games. And while that’s still mostly true, it’s cool to learn that’s there is actually quite a lot of substance behind it and the way she acts. Thanks for sharing!
She is also pretty cool. Cirno is like, one of those characters you have to respect for being so self confident despite arguably not being THAT great. Like Papyrus from Undertale or something. She has this big belief in herself as "THE STRONGEST" but as the Shiki fight and various others show, she actually isn't half bad as a threat.
It's both funny and cool how she isn't JUST a blowhard but is actually kinda tough and among the toughest of her species, along with having a pretty good rapsheet even though she isn't AS strong as she makes herself out to be. And you just gotta love that confidence that can be kinda backed up.
She is just like that happy kid who gets a reality check but manages to recover and get to the old ways. This message can be seen in some Zun's works like music albums (and this route), I do think that he talks about his own experience
There's really a lot of stories that are hidden within Touhou due to not being fished out by fanworks. Can't believe that Cirno of all characters has such an interesting one. We often just point and laugh at the fairies but they really are quite complex creatures. Being the manifestation of nature will do that, I guess.

It's actually kinda nice that Cirno did have a character that goes deeper than "Idiot who thinks she is strong." It's awesome.
Never knew Cirno would be confronted with such scenario, it really hits hard when you find out about your life span.

I was not expecting to get depression for Cirno on Cirno day
When it comes to sentimental Cirno, the one that always sticks to me even now is "Thank you, Cirno", a manga about Cirno learning about pollution and climate disaster in the outside world and her reactions to that
How is it of all the characters, Medicine, the Prismrivers, and Cirno get to have the crazy emotional PoFV arcs?
Reisen’s doesn’t end here, but we also get to learn some angst from her past

But we already knew she had baggage from IN, It's just with those 3 in particular its like, wow.
You reach the end with Medicine and realize she had been fighting in the same location almost the whole game.
Eh, Medicine is an abandoned doll, her reason to exist is already emotional baggage material, and the Prismrivers as ghosts also have a valid reason to have angst inherent to them. Cirno does have a shocking amount of depth right here.
It is pretty sad that the legendary baka herself has a better grip on her mortality than you do.
I bought Touhou 9 some months ago, and although I can't really play with someone in pvp, I still liked the game for the stories that the single player mode has. Thanks for making a video about one of the most interesting stories in the game, and happy Cirno day! ⑨
Edit: I actually managed to play this game with some friends a few days ago. It was fun to see their reactions as non-touhou players
Touhou 9 truly WAS Cirno's Game .
Out of ALL the characters from touhou, Cirno was the last one I was expecting to have a morbid twist yet bittersweet end to her campaign.
Even brings like Faries in Gensokyo won’t last forever, and Cirno’s fate of going to heaven or hell is still unknown, but she might as well live doing what she loves while time Is still there
Otherwise, it’ll just drive her to madness.
What I've always wanted to know is, "If there are no busses in Gensokyou, how does Cirno know what they are?"

There is theory that says maribel visits gensokyo in past because gensokyo in future doesn't exist actually,but because maribel and renko are from a far future that everything is dystopian,we can still have fun with our little fairy and relax,because thinking about death to much make the death even closer to us.so yeah,cirno will die,gensokyo will fall,but not for now or a long time.also if gensokyo dies.new places will born,such as after an entire forest burns in fire,the plants will come and reanimate the forest.:)
I really liked this video. Most videos related to Touhou are about memes, gameplay, or characters and end up ignoring the actual stories and lessons found in Zun's works that I think needs to be explored more often. I would love to see more videos exploring those stories within Touhou that many fans often overlook to learn a thing or two about Zun's view of the world he shares with the series.
Maybe next year we could get a video on Cirno's campaign in Touhou 16 which to my experience is one of the most amusing campaigns in all of the series.
What a nice video! This story was always so interesting to me because it's strange to think Fairies can be just as introspective as any other person but their ability to get absorbed by simply joys is too powerful so they never do for the most part, in the end Cirno realizes that's actually a strength and Aya is the perfect character to relay that kinda mindset too.
I feel this connected with Hidden Star in 4 Seasons, the Three Fairy mangas, and maybe even Cirno's own game, that Cirno will die one day like humans, and most Youkai, unlike other fairies cause she will become too powerful, she will lose her eternity, maybe straight up die or turn into some kind of life-bound mortal youkai similar to Yuuka or Medicine in that way, kinda like how it's inevitable Marisa will become a youkai Magician like Alice/Patchouli, Cirno is developing, and advancing as a person to the detriment of her natural immortality but she won't let that stop her from being Cirno, and living her life to the fullest, in a way her innocence will be lost, Cirno becomes one the most interesting characters in Touhou due to this, as she is one of the few Touhou girls that have character development, alongside Kosuzu, Kasen, Miyoi, and of course main characters like Reimu/Marisa.
I was about to give this a like, but it already had 9...

all i did when i did cirno route in touhou 9 was laugh at her antics...
the true fool was me for underestimating an ice fairy and her capacity to understand...
that ending hits differently now...

Funny to think how a fairy like cirno excepts the thougth of one day dieying meanwhile erine is so scared of it she became imortal to avoide it
HSiFS was my first Touhou game, and Cirno+Aya had the best dialogue/character imo. I played through PoFV, but think I was rushing to see all the character interactions/endings and didn't get a good look at this scenario. Glad I got a chance to revisit it here. Too often Cirno and Aya get flanderized into " 'strong' idiot" and "sleazy reporter" This was a good showing to more sides of both their characters.
Yuuka and Cirno's confrontation has a subtle narrative when Yuuka compares Cirno to the sun, circling back after the full development of Cirno's sense of permanence. Zun's writing is so joyful the way elements from ancient and distant lands cross seminate Touhou and give it life. Distinctly European concepts, similarities and more have direct or vague tie ins to the world. The passage of time and influence between namely Europe and Japan reveals itself to those who are astute and well read with the topics Zun explores. In itself Touhou is a mythical reflection of Japan, which unlike the real world so rapidly industrialized and grew into advanced modernity when another side of the world tested the waters long ago and ironically seeks remedy in something primeval and now foreign. To me that is the most fascinating and meta appeal to Touhou. I think religion has become vacuous and detached from the body whilst the crux of Touhou's spiritual themes appear more human and the spirit and soul actually lives in nature and begets itself. At the same time Touhou's hyper fantasy is like a very strong reflection of how life and nature have lost its grounding in reality in favor of the real life, modern world we have now. Maybe not the most evident theme in Touhou or most coherent but it without question exists throughout the series and is a tear jerker.

Dang, I remember when i beat this game but didn´t care the story too much. however, I kinda remember the ending with her and Aya was a bit emotional and cute, but after hearing how you explained it in this video, it hits different.

What if Cirno wasnt just the strongest fairy but just the strongest in Gensokyo ? Just imagine she's actually just an Ice god but doesnt know it yet.
I struggle thinking about the future and where I'll end up, i'm afraid of the unknown and most of my life isn't planned, things bad or good happen and I just go along, so most of the time my perspective is in the present, to a fault sometimes, this story was very near to me in a sense, it made me love Cirno more and appreciate her for more than "haha shitpost fairy", thanks for sharing this unexpectedly touching story in Touhou!
Just wanted to say... I watched this video around 7 months ago. I just watched Sr Pelo's Touhou video and I one of the songs stood out to be: it was this cute dorky fairy's one. I started watching more and more videos, especially videos with Cirno. Then I stumbled upon this one... And it definitely made me fall in love with the game.
I said to myself that I will clear every Touhou game. Mind that I have a full time job and some social life so yea, it would take a lot of time. I started with Touhou 6 (which I couldn't beat so I gave up after two months and used hacks to watch the endings), then with Touhou 7 (which I beat with Reimu A on normal and it was such a great feeling when I did) and just now I cleared Cirno in Touhou 9 in normal. I really wanted to see the ending by myself and I just did it after more than half a year.

Cirno had an existential crisis knowing she may one day die.
Mokou has an existential crisis knowing she will never die.
Tenshi has an existential crisis knowing she already died and made it to heaven.
Suddenly, going to hell doesn't seem so bad.

Honestly, as far as 9 goes you could probably beat it with you're eyes closed. It's one of the easiest TH games ever.

This is why I said months ago on the TH9 steam release video you made why I think its a great starter game. Not so much with the gameplay but its so full of character developement and ZUN shows sides of characters from his point of view. It's not some out of universe wrongly written fanfiction by someone that isnt ZUN. (yeah I dont like fanfictions, sorry). You should make a video like this for every character arc from that game by the way. Because they are all this great.
I also don't care too much about Touhou fanfiction. Most of them lack the character nuances that Zun's writing have. Yet they are the more recognized.

I think it’s a bit of an overreaction to not include any footage of the endings in a transformative video like this one. I think the rule in the guidelines is more about direct uploads of the endings, even then, ZUN probably wouldn’t care if a video like this one included footage of the ending being talked about

The name is pronounced in Japanese as "Chiruno" but for some reason when ZUN translated her name he decided to spell it Cirno
I can't believe that an idiotic ice fairy somehow gets the most character development in the entire series than any other characters in a 20+ year old franchise with 100+ characters
