I feel like it should be mentioned the whole dumb moon sideplot is actually very important to the story, so much so that it's actually the main over arching plot. You see, the reason everyone went bat-shit crazy was because the Moon's light was amplified to inflict Lunacy, causing every resident of Gensokyo to become monsters that would threaten the outside world, resulting in some purposefully engineered Pacific Rim styled bullshit to occur that would unite earth's people against a common foe. The only ones who would live to see this new era of the world would be Yukari, and of course, Koishi, who were fused together temporarily and given an immortality potion to keep them alive long enough to see Gensokyo's end.
kkhta has always been an inspiration to me, the unique art style and the artist's progression as an artist is really inspiring even though the plot is pretty edgy, but it's still something, and it does some things well like the characterization of certain characters.
Even if the community treats it like a company’s worst product, while I disagree with it being… good… it’s still impressive that some guy had a passion to make something that he didn’t know grew so much and became their brand. And I respect that guy for even putting so much effort into this thing

I really got into the fight, and it was one of the few moments in KKHTA where I started to really take it seriously and care about it. After the battle, Reimu, dying alongside Marisa, starts to reminisce about their days back in Gensokyo. Tearing up, Reimu says this line: "Those bygone days... Every single one...They were my irreplaceable treasure." Truth be told, I started bawling my god damn eyes out. I may not be the biggest fan of KKHTA, but damn was this sad. And I haven't even talked about the cliffhanger ending... The cliffhanger of KKHTA is so god damn depressing and desolate. The moment that I just talked about is the final moment where Gensokyo had a slimmer of a chance to get it all back. Now, it's just Koishi and a powerless Yukari, all alone. Two broken people stuck in such a hopeless ending. Yukari is heartbroken over the loss of her beloved Gensokyo, but despite this, Koishi is seemingly fine with it. Seeing this, Yukari lashes out at Koishi, ending in Koishi crying and then forcefully tearing her 3rd eye open... Have I mentioned that Koishi was my favorite character at this point in time? Have I also mentioned this was one of the first fanworks I was exposed to? This was a god damn sucker punch to my feelings back then.
I personally think that most people that don't like kkhta are those who only watch 2 episode and then stopped watching it. Its true the beginning of kkhta isn't the best but halfway in the series it really become great.the art becomes better and the story improves a lot but i understand that most people aren't willing to wach 5 episode till it actually becomes good

I think KKHTA has a good premise, but a really bad execution and isn’t what you’d call good. I’ve watched all eight episodes. Starts out as Higurashi, then becomes Evangelion and is just generally full of plotholes. Though, I must say the actions of Tsukuyomi there make sense, on contradiction to many others that WTF at the notion he did it all for a family reunion. Tsukuyomi is the god of the moon, clearly he’d want to see moon-chan happy.
It was osana reimu and this long really good fanfic called imperfect metamorphosis that got me into touhou its still my favourite story though it starts out a bit rough at times
@@Xenomorthian i know im pretty late on this but aw yeah imperfect metamorphosis is awesome! im barely nearing halfway, but i think its really good and addicting so far!
I just finished this series, and Osana Reimu before it. I never knew Touhou could make me feel Evangelion levels of emptiness. I’m glad I’ve gotten into this fandom this year
Man, i feel like every single story that people looking to the moon and they start became something, i feel like those stories learning the idea from kkhta
0:16 Actually, various manga series had a few Halloween chapters. Such as the one where they trial ANOTHER trial of guts, where it's found out that Marisa likes to use spirits to cool watermelons.
I’m kinda happy that people still talk about KKHTA. It started as something that traumatized me one fateful day, but ended up loving the hell out of it just by how messed up it is! The funny thing is I watched the whole thing un-translated so I went through the whole thing in pure terror.
wall of text warning! I don't know if it's just because touhou project is one of my most beloved series ever, but I have a very strong attachment to this series I didn't really expect to have going in. I watched KKHTA a few months back I believe..? but it definitely had me hooked for a lot of reasons I feel like aren't the main reasons for the series' popularity. I think the thing that really got me interested was one of the earlier scenes of Remilia and Reimu having a conversation about Flandre, and as an extension gives a perfect example of my favorite parts of KKHTA. Between all of the hyper-complex storylines and general lore going on there's moments of simple character interaction that always have this looming energy of a deeper more emotional form of storytelling that leaves me thinking about the series. There's just so many interesting character interactions to be had with the series aside from the lot of fights, like the scene I just mentioned very strongly creates a parallel between Remilia and Satori and their commonality of just wanting to do the best for their sisters, but both of them still have their lapses in judgement whether big or small that interfere with those bonds in the first place. Many of the seemingly random bouts of backstory, though not really necessary, also entertained me (like Sanae's backstory for example, feels very over the top in true KKHTA spirits but establishes a really strong found family bond between her, Suwako and Kanako). The current "ending" of the series resonates with me most though, and I think it wouldn't leave the impact it does on me if the series was lacking any of the components it's made up of. The emotional moments pique my interest initially, but even the general storyline is also required to drive the stakes up to the very tipping point in the very last episode's part 8/9. Yukari's loss and Koishi's incapacity to understand it is even more painful given all that has happened outside of them in the story. It hurts more to know Koishi was used for the purpose of the destruction of Gensokyo, to know that in that same vein Yukari was forcefully bound to her at an integral point where otherwise she could've done something to stop her home and creation's destruction, it all comes out full force in those final scenes and yet it happens in arguably the most normal circumstance any of these characters could be in, sitting at their new "home" having dinner. I think the current "end" to the series is perfect as is, and if it continues that'll be great but I think the ending we are given matches the general tone of the series as is. I ended up writing a big block of text but I do think this series has its merits, and I think its imperfections are what make it lovable to me. The art is imperfect, the music choices are tonally random, the storyline randomly hops and jumps and I absolutely adore it that way. It reads like someone on the internet having the most fun with a series they enjoy, and that to me is something special :)
You had a very nuanced and interesting comment ! In-fact it reminds me of a video I watched recently called “My favorite anime is a 6/10” or “my favorite anime is trash” I loved hearing your perspective and thoughts on the story especially when it came to its flaws and imperfections. I tried my hardest when I watched the series to truly grasp the strands of the plot that I cared about and could keep track of and because of that I am inclined to ask. What plot line did you find most interesting? For me it was KoaKuma and Lady Pat. Not only was it consistent but it was complete. It’s the most well written aspect in my opinion. Not only did Lady Pat develop and grow as a character realizing her mistakes. But we also got to see KoaKuma get what she wanted in the end.
3:37 bruh i paused the video without looking, nodded a couple times while having the most joyus smile known to mankind, and look back up and saw her staring at me emotionlessly I litteraly did the same expression towards her but then burst out laughing after a few secobds due to how sudden it was and how goofy i acted
Anyways. Meiling and flandre didn't die. Infact sanae was the first to die. Meiling lived. She was just severely injured. Idk how flandre lived tho. She was alive when she becomes a kaiju. You clearly watched all of it... I already watched all of it. I liked it ngl. I love brutality. C,mon come murder me.
Woah, my comment briefly appeared in the comment scroll-over! It's a weird feeling to see something you submitted like that. Enjoyed the video, it was interesting to learn of a fan ending in the works. I didn't know that was being created!
The truth is I saw the series as a child without knowing that it was Touhou and it scared me about 3 months ago I remembered it again I saw it at first it made me laugh at the nonsense and then it left me thinking.
Yeah im not even gonna lie i barely understood kkhta at first having watched it at a younger age but man this vid makes me wanna revisit it. Love that this vid and comments in here is discussing it still tho :]
TL;dr: Koishi asks for a fishing rod from Meiling, slits her throat upon refusal, Koakuma goes yandere towards Patchy, Koishi later ends up fusing with Yukari DIO-style, and the Lunarians are trying to cause the 4.5th Impact on Evangelion-with-a-hint-of-Imperishable-Night levels of WTF to turn everyone into open-eyed Satoris so they can ship the Moon and the Earth.
Imagine at the end of kkhta where It would be like the smile tapes (Analog Horror). To sum things up in the smile tapes is about this disease which makes people smile and go crazy (Like being a lunatic) And there's this weird man that is telling the infected ones to go and 'spread happiness to the world' (Like the lunarians creating the Human instrumentality Project) The smile tapes ended where all hope was lost because the infected smilers killed their one and only cure until a group of aliens just come in and fixes everything and everyone went back to normal where no infected smilers to cause chaos. Basically, kkhta *CAN* exactly be like the smile tapes where they fixed everything at the last episode/moment.
Great summary of the plot, appeal, and highlights of KKHTA. This should be perfect for anyone who wants to know more, but are too squeamish to watch the original. 👍 And I can definitely say it’s difficult to make a dark Touhou fan series without making folks groan at best and angry at worst. Trust me: I know. 😓
IMO, DitR stud up to the challenges presented by making a darker Touhou fic. Although I do feel like some parts were not executed very well (*cough*miscarriage*cough*) I think you did a good job over all.
I have been a Touhou fan over a decade now and only started KKHTA a few weeks ago and completed watching it (up to part 19 8/9 and the fan made continuation) today. I...feel like for the immense amount of time and effort put into it by just one guy and it offering a take that's so unique It could deserve a special place in the fandom, BUT with such extreme themes (grimdark and gore) many can't enjoy it and plenty dislike it. I for one forced myself to watch it just so I could get it over with. I am grateful that someone saw fit to 'complete' the series with their own take which was well done and makes sense according to the lore so I can feel the story is ended, even more that it has an 'acceptably' happy ending. Not to try to act like I think you 'need' to watch it Suwawako, but did you see the fan-made continuation? The episodes were translated only recently.
if any of yall want a good touhou horror thing they have Touhou Igyoukyu Grotesque Land Story, its wayy more gorey and its not fully translate but at least its a real credible horror story and not some kind of elsa.exe 3 am stuff (kkhta is still a very good and entertaining show that had a lot of passion into it but seriously its that cool because its like a hidden internet webserie, i mean if it was a normal tv show ppl wouldnt have the same opinion)
@@marisakirisame734 the spinoff was more of a comic/troll thing he made for fun like the weird slice of life stories he made in his pixiv (like bruh a slice of life with creatures that only brrrjskdjksjk)
the only thing I think of when i hear about kkhta, i think of how i watched this in a discord call with someone who had never seen or played a touhou game. it was a very silent preview of it.
Okay spoilers ahead for Koakuma on how "she won" She is the biggest simp for Patche to the point that she would do anything to be with her. By "indirectly" causing Koishi to be locked up and Flandre breaking the Hakurei barrier. In the end, we see the only people left in Gensokyo confirmed to be alive being Yukari(depressed), Kaguya (locked up), Satori (Lunarian pet), Koishi (just the same, I think) and ofcourse Patche and Koakuma. Koakuma literally r@pes or sexually harasses Patche for who knows how long and that scene still gives my anger. All of the gore and suffering just for this???? This devil is so low and so desperate she indirectly kills everyone for it. Despite all of the gore and voilence this show has, Koakuma's actions angers me the most and this memory always remained in my head when I see a Koakuma x Patchouli.
I personally would say Koakuma had the most consistent and well written character arc. She was two faced by despite being a flat character she had a motivation to work towards. Through the whole story she progressed and we saw and learned her motivation and how she was able to attain it with limited power. The foreshadowing with Satori was all so good. I actually wouldn’t be upset if KoaKuma was the main character, it’s just a very clean plot from start to finish with not too many holes.
Don't ask me how I came to this answer but I bet if you asked Marisa and Reimu how they felt about their blaze of glory Marisa would be happy knowing she went out giving her all, sticking it to a stuffy lunatic and Reimu would rest easy knowing she faced her end with courage along her most trusted friend.
We can't forget that one scene where theres literal *PRON* I watched this with my friend and I swear I died on the inside when I saw that. *aren't the Earth and Moon at that time kids or...*
It's a cool series, it can be a little goofy at the earlier parts but later on it gets so good. People might hate me for saying this, but after watching this series I ended up liking the Watatsuki sisters even more lol. The only parts I disliked were Yukari getting blown up by her own shikigami like she wasn't a freaking sage of Gensokyo, and Mokou being killed by a convenient plot weapon.
You went through all that and didn't even mention the weird similarity to Tails Gets Trolled(Even though you mentioned Sonic. Although funnily enough at least Reimu had more screen time than Sonic). I guess its just that both of the series have very different protagonists(Tails is weak and naive, Koishi is crazy and sociopathic. Both are dumb as bricks though) even though most of the Sonic cast died brutal deaths in just a few scenes while most of the Touhou cast got turned into Kaijus. But i guess at the end of the day its a series that will probably remain on hold until the main series end. Kind of think of my Mugen game in that artstyle even though its more inspired by Phantasy Star and Crack Life.
Seeing this series, it kinda makes me think it could work as a "world" for kingdom hearts... granted, due to the series having a lot of... questionable stuff, i have a feeling it would be tones down a lot. But with the right writing (and use on both the lunacy and the darkness/heartless) it would end up making quite a nice world if you ask me about it.
@Nockgun i don't think they COUNT as SCPs. Most, if not ALL of the gensokyan inhabitants died during the moonlight decence ceremony, whereve they were killed by some third party or as Space Kaijus that got gunned down by the Lunarians's Vijokas, i'm sure they can take more hit that whatever immortal SCP they can encounter. Even if using the Kingdom Hearts's keyblade logic at that too.
This is one of the few storylines that would actually benefit from time travel. Annoyingly, the lack of an ending also left a few other characters alive (e.g. Cirno, Shikieiki) who could hypothetically travel back in time and prevent the Lunarian plot. _Now if only the author would actually finish and give us an ending we can live with..._
Evil hearted, that does make sense for Koakuma. So, she never went insane, in a sense, herself. Her nature as a creature of Hell meant she was going to be evil from the start though I suppose the moon's light would amplify it to the extreme that it had become. Just an FYI too my dude, Cirno's name is pronounced as "cher-no".
Rewatched a bit of KKHTA and I am hoping by the installment of 19, 9/9 that Koakuma dies. She literally says the reason everyone who dies cannot resurrect is because she holds their essence or power or whatever, not to mention she is just pure evil. If she dies, it's a happy ending for Gensokyo (I think, but Gensokyo got destroyed so maybe it's just really over?) In any case, the shock of the sudden turnaround at the end into a Neon Genesis Evangelion type of fanwork really made me scratch my head. I kinda took the thing seriously, but by that point I just started to ask: why? But you know what, the more monstrous Yokai designs look dope asf to me. I'm gonna draw Wriggle smoking a cig in that form of hers, I think it'd go hard.
I remember a spaztique post about KKHTA and I wondered if people ever considered making a paperback manga that was basically a more polished remake of KKHTA, a walfas series or even a visual novel.
I'd suggest giving the series another look later when you are not pressured to make a video about it. Also, please try to give the work a bit of context as things as Memories of phantasm and other things are really far from happening when this debuted. Personally I love KKHTA artstyle. The first few episodes do look amateur and you might say... childish but that's really charming and something that's admitelly really hard. To draw like a child. The artist's style improved a lot and I love it but it's not as creepy I think. I still love it. I don't know if the artist planned the whole thing from the beginning but as much as a shipwreck the stoy is it makes sense. I saw other people explaining that so there's no point on going there again. Just watching the whole series and then looking at the opening on the very first episodes lets you see that at least a few things were pre-meditated. Another thing that should be credited is that it was one of the few "big" fanworks at the time. It kinda spoke of how a lot of fans saw the Komeiji and it kinda shaped a lot of some chars personality too. Especially the Komeiji. I do understand that KKHTA is pretty bad at times. The first time I watched it I stopped after byakuren and discarded it as shit. A few years later I came back to it. I couldn't shake the memories of those few episodes and their art style so I gave it a second chance. It... was... still kinda bad but I still admit it's really charming. I think that's the main problem with KKHTA. People who hate it just see it on the surface and think it's bad (I agree that it's bad on the surface), then there's the people who like it for "edgy" reasons as a gory and honestly pretty fucked up story. Then, the fans like myself defend it cuz we took the time to pretty much "rinse off" the bad parts. Looking at the thing as a whole and paying attention to the little details added to the chars. How they were explored with a more "serious" and fucked up lens. Remember that a lot of this cute girls are based on monsters that kill and eat animals and humans so in a way it's a window to see them more closely to what they are supposed to be. Most of the fanworks paint the girls in their most cutesy side. There is legit merit in this series. From the drawings to the story, the music it chose (although I admit some of them make no sense), the characterization and the message. There's this part that pretty much says that the humans/youkai are around because of two galactic beings that are still around. Those being the Earth and the moon. Even with their eye closed the moon is always looking at the earth waiting for the moment their eyes open again and can look at each other. It's the little things man. Anyway... again... Please give it another chance and do it at your own pace.
I didn't like kkhta. Its trying to be psychological horror but ends up being more like a crappypastas like sonic.exe where the "horror" comes from le hyper realistic blood and shit like "NOOOOOOOOOOOO! SANIC WOULD NEVER HURT HE BEST FREIND TAILS WTF WTF WTF!" The stakes were also way too high for a psychological horror and need to be toned down to a more personal level. I think horror set in gensokyo could work fine just not like this.
Yeah FS is ironically better at casual horror than KKHTA. KKHTA is what happened when an artist don't plan their work beforehand so they just kinda make it along the way and insert random plot points that end up derailing the story and making the stakes unecessarily high. I suspect we never get a final episode because the author simply has no idea how to resolve such a jumbled and complicated story in a satisfying manner.
This is not how criticism work. You are just whining about things you don't like. You are allowed to voice your thoughts, but that's it. I don't like lazy meiling meme or failice meme which corrupt the fanbase, but you don't see me whining about it in other videos.

I just finished this series, and Osana Reimu before it. I never knew Touhou could make me feel Evangelion levels of emptiness. I’m glad I’ve gotten into this fandom this year
I am so ready for the final EPISODE ! Who is your favorite character?

Suwawako be like "I'm gonna take a break" then disappear like KKHTA author
as for what koakuma did afterwards?
*flashback to koakuma and patchouli*
we dont talk about that.
Yeah they are allergic to clothes.
Yeah.. KKHTA is just everyone’s Vietnam flashbacks
Awh hell nah, la creatura
I blame Pear for making KKHTA one of my first deep dives into the Touhou franchise.
Bonkumiru/Chirumiru was my introduction to the series.
wall of text warning!
It reads like someone on the internet having the most fun with a series they enjoy, and that to me is something special :)
no way you just typed that!
KKHTA... aka, DA FUQ WAS GOING ON WITH THE CREATOR WHEN THEY THOUGHT MAKING KOISHI AND THEN NEARLY ALL OF GENSOKYO PSYCHOPATHIC MURDERERS!?

TL;dr:
Koishi asks for a fishing rod from Meiling, slits her throat upon refusal, Koakuma goes yandere towards Patchy, Koishi later ends up fusing with Yukari DIO-style, and the Lunarians are trying to cause the 4.5th Impact on Evangelion-with-a-hint-of-Imperishable-Night levels of WTF to turn everyone into open-eyed Satoris so they can ship the Moon and the Earth.
What
i can't believe it wasn't too long ago I was obsessed with this show, even inspiring some of my art style off kkhta.
Imagine at the end of kkhta where It would be like the smile tapes (Analog Horror).
To sum things up in the smile tapes is about this disease which makes people smile and go crazy (Like being a lunatic)
And there's this weird man that is telling the infected ones to go and 'spread happiness to the world' (Like the lunarians creating the Human instrumentality Project)
The smile tapes ended where all hope was lost because the infected smilers killed their one and only cure until a group of aliens just come in and fixes everything and everyone went back to normal where no infected smilers to cause chaos.
Basically, kkhta *CAN* exactly be like the smile tapes where they fixed everything at the last episode/moment.
Koishi asks scarlet devil manor for a fishing rod but they refuse...
*SO SHE BRUTALY MURDERS MEILING AND FLANDRE*
Great summary of the plot, appeal, and highlights of KKHTA. This should be perfect for anyone who wants to know more, but are too squeamish to watch the original. 👍
And I can definitely say it’s difficult to make a dark Touhou fan series without making folks groan at best and angry at worst. Trust me: I know. 😓
IMO, DitR stud up to the challenges presented by making a darker Touhou fic. Although I do feel like some parts were not executed very well (*cough*miscarriage*cough*) I think you did a good job over all.
"Even bringing a chainsaw to prove it"
I have been a Touhou fan over a decade now and only started KKHTA a few weeks ago and completed watching it (up to part 19 8/9 and the fan made continuation) today.
Where can I find that fanmade continuation?

Okay spoilers ahead for Koakuma on how "she won"
She is the biggest simp for Patche to the point that she would do anything to be with her. Despite all of the gore and voilence this show has, Koakuma's actions angers me the most and this memory always remained in my head when I see a Koakuma x Patchouli.
i did wonder
if i had good drawing i would make operatives like had a hitlist on her
I personally would say Koakuma had the most consistent and well written character arc.
Oh wow, we were literally just talking about KKHTA on the discord server and then I see that you've uploaded this.
Life has weird coincidences sometimes
Don't ask me how I came to this answer
but I bet if you asked Marisa and Reimu how they felt about their blaze of glory
Marisa would be happy knowing she went out giving her all, sticking it to a stuffy lunatic
and Reimu would rest easy knowing she faced her end with courage along her most trusted friend.
KKHTA traumatized me, no joke I watched the whole thing to the end
man i like an SCP crossover with this like there would be alot of things close to this
From all the things i was expecting for a first frame wasn't an ak47.

I watched this with my friend and I swear I died on the inside when I saw that. *aren't the Earth and Moon at that time kids or...*
HASH
Oh yea Patchy and Koakuma having "fun" time after that incident and reaching to the moooooooon~
I made my peace with the cliff hanger as a prophetic dream.
SCP world it is!
My sister loves this comic, she likes the artstyle

Alotta… Why?
Why does this exist
all because of a god damn fishing rod
This is one of the few storylines that would actually benefit from time travel. Annoyingly, the lack of an ending also left a few other characters alive (e.g. Cirno, Shikieiki) who could hypothetically travel back in time and prevent the Lunarian plot. _Now if only the author would actually finish and give us an ending we can live with..._
Oh god... I've fallen on a rabbit hole that i can't leave... I hope that no one will follow me on this hell

Lore of Koishi Komeiji's Heart-Throbbing Adventure: Explained momentum 100
Rewatched a bit of KKHTA and I am hoping by the installment of 19, 9/9 that Koakuma dies. She literally says the reason everyone who dies cannot resurrect is because she holds their essence or power or whatever, not to mention she is just pure evil. If she dies, it's a happy ending for Gensokyo (I think, but Gensokyo got destroyed so maybe it's just really over?)
In any case, the shock of the sudden turnaround at the end into a Neon Genesis Evangelion type of fanwork really made me scratch my head. I kinda took the thing seriously, but by that point I just started to ask: why? But you know what, the more monstrous Yokai designs look dope asf to me.
Anyway... again... Please give it another chance and do it at your own pace.
please thank you
Yukari finally got what she deserved. That is the plot 😎
