Jimmy, you're a rock star! This wasn't the exact problem with my 2012 Silverado, but immediately sent me in the right direction after viewing this. My truck started randomly dying , usually right after starting it. No run, no crank was the only symptom. Warning lights, a/c blower, radio all functioned fine. After several attempts to restart, it'd finally go and run fine. It did this every day for about a week until I saw this vid. I saw another RUclips video that showed how to separate the under-hood fuse box from the base. I took it apart and found the dozens of pins that plug in had a lot of chalky oxidation on them. With a knife blade and 400 grit sandpaper, I carefully cleaned them all up. Upon reassembly, I noticed a relay labeled "run/crank". There were 4 other identical relays plugged in, so I swapped that one with one labeled "running lamps". I'm not sure which was the problem, but it's been 2 weeks and the problem has not recurred. Thanks for the video. Helped me sort my problem out quickly.
In most cases, you can get the pin out to that harness and find out what that wire is exactly for. Thank goodness you fixed the issue. Most people would be going nuts and never find it. Good looking out!! 👍
I have a 98. I took my truck to a guy that said on my models, there was a wire in the steering column messed up. He was an "expert". I changed my wiring harness in steering column since he did mention what you were describing about your shift light. I'm glad you found that problem. I'll be checking this out on mine. Great job!
The same thing happened with my Fiat Doblo yesterday. Thought the battery was dead but it was not the battery. Thank you, Jimmy greetings from Türkiye.
One great thing about owning a vehicle for many years is the familiarity you gain with it. I'm sure that was a help to find this problem. I, being an outside the box thinker, would have bypassed the connector block by splicing that wire from inside the engine compartment through the bulkhead to under the dash. You would eliminate any issue with that connector box and have easy access to that wire if needed. Regardless, I can't fault your fix. Nice job.
yes I had the same problem with a 76 ford , I bought off a car lot in Whitehorse Yukon really cheap , it had new battery ,new alt ,new ignition etc , then one day I was going to night shift at whitepass trucking as a tire man , and I seen a flash on the floor , that's what it was all along a # 10 main wire burnt off at the fire wall junction I joined the wire together and it was fine ever since .

Appreciate this Jimmy! Sounds like that could all be related - who knew? Will check this solution out on my truck tomorrow - thank you very kindly for sharing! -Ken
Intermittent electrical. First, don't ever take the firewall pass thru block apart unless you are replacing it. That's the last thing you do before you give up and rewire the whole vehicle. Splitting that box can be like opening Pandora's box. Check your fuel pump power lead from source to pump. Look at it, NOT continuity check. You've changed your fuel pump, lifted the truck, some other stuff. Check that power source wire from one end to the other for a pinched or chaffing wire, loose connection. Also, ignition switch wiring for the same issues. You could have a jenke ignition switch, or maybe the plug on the switch is loose or wires chaffed against a bracket under the dash. If it only happens after the truck is good and warmed up, take the ignition module out of the distributor to an auto parts store and have it checked. They aren't very expensive and and it will be cooled of when you check it so...
Mine is a 6.5 diesel 98 gmc and is doing the same thing so this is one thing I’ll look at for sure tried absolutely everything else and thousands of dollars so far

Nice work detective! My 2018 silverado just started dieing and when I took off the grounding cable, it looked like the frame was undercoated before the cable was bolted on. So I cleaned off the undercoating and got down to metal so hopefully it fixes my issue.
back in the mid 80s I had a 1969 Mustang that would randomly die like that when taking off from a dead stop, or when I hit a bump in the road. It was almost the same thing, the screw that holds the two halves of basicly the same connector was loose. I tightened it up and never had that problem again.
Nice Jimmy. One other wire you need to check for preventive maintenence, is the ignition bypass wire inder the passenger side dash. There's a connector there that you disconnect to set the timing. The contacts there in mine corroded and became intermittent. I fixed it by opening up the harness to access that wire (brown if I recall) and I soldered extension leads about 12" long to each side. Put back together and then solder the two ends. Wrap up the excess wire with tie-wrap. To set timing, I will unfurl the wires and cut the end off opening the circuit. Then re-solder and re-stow those wires. It will never again become intermittent. Truck did not die, but stumbled horribly as the ECU lost control of spark timing (EST).
I just fixed a stalling issue on my 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee which was doing the exact same thing you described. My issue turned out to be the ESD Relay. It never showed a check engine light or anything, so frustrating to track down.
This is a common problem on some of the jeeps, I changed out the ignition switch and everything still no start, started digging around and found this connection type on the starter under the car, and yup that was the problem, my 05 jeep liberty starts everytime now

Good stuff Jimmy, thanks for the knowledge. Now I'm going to have that failure lurking in the back of my head driving my Suburban! Only issue I've had is the anti-theft model went bad. Truck would start and run for 3 seconds and turn off. Drove me crazy for a few days until I replaced the module with a rebuilt one (part no longer made) and had the ECM "flashed" (I think that's what my mechanic said). Anyway, can't wait to see what's next.
I've had this problem with mine. The stupid security feature. I no longer use the fob to lock/unlock or the door lock buttons. If it wont start, turn the key on for 10 mins till the 'security' light goes off then turn key off then back on. Should start. Not sure what the permanent fix is yet.

Hey Jimmy, I have a 1991 Chevy G30 Sport Van with a 5.7 liter TBI w/ automatic transmission that runs great, but dies at idle after it warms up. Every stop sign or light. Then it will start right up. The only way you can drive it is to put it in neutral at each stop. Lately the newest wrinkle is that, rarely, but on occasion it will not start. Meaning that nothing happens. The starter doesn't engage at all. No clicking or anything. If I leave it (cooling off, maybe) it will come back on line and start right up after 10 to 15 minutes. I have tried the idle air control valve, MAP sensor, heat sensor or switch (no temp. gauge), Also, by the way, extremely rough start in cold weather. Any ideas? Really enjoy your channel. Thanks
If your rpm gauge ever pounces at idle (not with rpm) but just flutters (it's hard to explain) but the coil is bad and it would be good to change the distributor aswell. Some people will say to change the icm under the cap but that may not fix it and if it does the pickup coil is not far behind it.
My truck would intermittently refuse to start. One day, I noticed that all of the gauges were reading wonky. I knew that I probably had a bad ground. It turned out that the negative battery cable had corroded at the battery terminal. I had to strip back the cable and install a better battery terminal connector. I also spayed some terminal protection fluid on the battery connections.
Maybe this is my problem my Ford Territory stalls at stop lights all the time scary too as someone behind does not know what’s going on could run up the back of you.thanks for the vid have subscribed to your channel since I saw your vid on Whining engine noise. Sydney Australia:
Good luck. My 2015 truck is dropping voltage when I park or when I'm coming to a stop when parking. . The engine shuts off completely. I can instantly restart it but it's a problem. Once I had no power for 15 min and then magically it just works again.
I’ve been having this problem and I’ve notice a red wire not plugged in at all under the hood near the driver dash area and I’ve asked everyone where that wire goes and nobody knows and seem to think it’s not significant. I’m not sure if it’s the same red wire but I’ll have to find out where it’s supposed to go now to see if that has been the actually culprit this whole time.
Will this issue throw any codes? My issue came up on our 2 hour journey back home from Disney. I was thinking well my battery connections do have to be replaced definitely on the negative. Then I was thinking it’s acting like a fuel issue. The first time it happened was going 75-80 on the highway when I was in the middle lane which was definitely sketchy. I got to the shoulder got the truck started got back on the highway took the first exit topped of my gas and then took back roads home. Then happened 3 more times at stop lights.
I looked at this video to see if it would help but urs is way different that what my truck does mine will completely shut off randomly but it will turn on right away and I’m not sure what it could be
Kinda have similar issue ! 78 Malibu will run fine then looses spark ! I’ve been through the HEI ignition!! Everything and why it’s loosing spark?idk for once in life I’m baffled
Can you help me with one issue I have with my truck, mines a 1998 2 doors Tahoe, I have no speedometer, I already replace the cluster and the speed sensor
I have a 98 Chevy Express and it just cuts off in the middle of the street, I got it jump Started but it now making a lot of noise that it wasn’t doing before and then it cuts off again. What can that be

If your rpm gauge ever pounces at idle (not with rpm) but just flutters (it's hard to explain) but the coil is bad and it would be good to change the distributor aswell. Some people will say to change the icm under the cap but that may not fix it and if it does the pickup coil is not far behind it.
Good to know
Can also be an air core motor (95+) that has had the viscious dampening fluid dry up/leak out
My truck would intermittently refuse to start.
Where does that wire go to on both ends? Any codes recorded?
What wire is that called ?
Maybe this is my problem my Ford Territory stalls at stop lights all the time scary too as someone behind does not know what’s going on could run up the back of you.thanks for the vid have subscribed to your channel since I saw your vid on Whining engine noise.
Sydney Australia:
Your videos are so good in details.. thanks for that .-)
Have a 2004 Suburban and randomly either kills or won't run right then a separate day runs fine no issues 5.3 Vortec 4x4
Great job, nice info!
I assume that wire is fuel pump power wire!
a littie dielectric grease is good as well. fixes 2007 malibu brake light issue
Hey brother I'm having similar issues with my 99 suburban! This video is a year old, have you had anymore issues with your 95 ??
Nice work! 👏🏻
Did you ever fix the charging issue and the low voltage on gauge
Will this issue throw any codes? My issue came up on our 2 hour journey back home from Disney. I was thinking well my battery connections do have to be replaced definitely on the negative. Then I was thinking it’s acting like a fuel issue. The first time it happened was going 75-80 on the highway when I was in the middle lane which was definitely sketchy. I got to the shoulder got the truck started got back on the highway took the first exit topped of my gas and then took back roads home. Then happened 3 more times at stop lights.
Thank you brother
Thanks for passing along this informations
I looked at this video to see if it would help but urs is way different that what my truck does mine will completely shut off randomly but it will turn on right away and I’m not sure what it could be
Kinda have similar issue ! 78 Malibu will run fine then looses spark ! I’ve been through the HEI ignition!! Everything and why it’s loosing spark?idk for once in life I’m baffled
Would this work on a 2005 1500 hd. It starts but dies randomly. It’s not a bad alternator I changed that .
What can that be
Electrical issues are always a problem with older autos my 1999 Toyota SR5 4x4 is a nightmare !
The ecms in these older vehicles are way more resilient because there just a ground Block should be fine Jimmy @1Road
Great video! Thanks!
have you considered getting a project car. Something that has been sitting for awhile, and needs restoration. That seems to be the in thing online right now.
I had the SAME problem with a geo metro years back
I would've dabbed a little hot glue in that terminal to keep it in for sure but good job. What's a PSA?? Or do you mean PAS?
Thats the a4 pin. Power distribution. For your ignition switch. That would definitely do that.
Geez, my 95 5.7 silverado been doing that since i bought it in 2002, fighting coils, pickup coils etc.
Ignition control module. Get a GM one and use good thermal paste. I’ve owned 6 GMT400s over last 20 years
Good point! 👍
My '02 Burb randomly shut off, always while I was driving. It was the crank position sensor. A known issue.
😂😂 i feel your frustration
Did you check a wiring diagram to see what that wire was? Got me curious
I tried. Looked in my Chilton and online. Only thing I could find says battery.
@@1RoadGarage with the amount of work you put into that truck a single vehicle subscription to alldatadiy would be a worthwhile investment. It’s like $99 or something. Complete factory service info and all diagrams. Those aftermarket books can lead you astray. Alldata is what the pros use. Just a thought
Congratulations
