Nice early, but once it falls behind it doesnt bring much to the table anymore even after the late evolution. Specs flamethrower or sunny day setup will be really good into some fights though. Its a shame it misses out on will o wisp before the battle frontier and some of its best moves are through breeding. Hypnosis, double kick, morning sun or even thrash couldve helped a lot.
I love it! I remember I had to breed a Rapidash so I can use it on fire red, I managed to get a shiny Ponyta with really good egg moves, can be such a monster sometimes💪
I’ve been using Ponyta for the first time in my current Diamond playthrough and I’ve gotta say, it’s been really surprising me with how good it is. It single-handedly took out Maylene’s Lucario with Flame Wheel (I traded it to platinum to heart scale that onto it) and all around it’s been a fantastic physical sweeper. I’d avoided using it for years because I’d always heard it wasn’t that good, but it’s really fun to use, despite its limited movepool.
Ponyta and Rapidash are definitely iconic in DPPt to me, almost purely because they're the only fire type option in DP other than the Chimchar line. Everyone has them: your rival, Flint, and a whole mess of trainers. Still, you get it early enough to play around with, and it's decent enough overall, even if the movepool is kinda limited. I also like how it's used a lot by the Rancher trainer class, that's some good flavor.
A note about both boss Lucarios: Cynthia's Lucario is a good matchup for revenge killing, as Flare Blitz kills it and Rapidash usually outspeeds. If you can bait a Shadow Ball somehow, it could be useful in a pinch switch in as well, though be careful of ESpeed. Maylene's Lucario can die to max damage Flamethrower (game corner) in a pinch if you got a +SpAtt nature. Though if you would spec into that it makes it a lot less useful later unless you sacrifice some speed for attack. You can probably get a Flame Plate underground too. Though thats a lot of set up for one chance at one mon being useful in a gym.
And here I was waiting today's upload to continue the Platinum journey and watch 2 episodes together but Rapidash outsped this xD Rapidash is cool and all though I feel it should have been faster with a more diverse movepool or a secondary type perhaps(?)
Personally I’ve never liked Ponyta/Rapidash as a whole, for every reason you just mentioned. Which is sad, cuz it’s one of my favorite designs in a Pokémon. I grew up with horses, and loved the Pokémon for it. Now that I’ve seen the video, I’m gonna go give Ponyta a shot in Platinum, however! Thanks for the content as always😊

Rapidash has been a valuable member of so many of my runs!
It's in the top 5 for best fire types in DP so at least it has that going for it. I'd go as far as to call it second best, only bested by Infernape.
