Please don’t forget this was an American, an accomplished veteran, well trained and experienced. I’m a veteran and in my mind this veteran is another brother in arms who returned from deployment a changed man. Mental health breakdowns by vets can move in slow motion over a long time. Extreme beliefs are sometimes a sign of mental instability. We can’t always see extreme ideas and behaviors emerging in time to intervene. However, civilians should remember that we’re different from you by virtue of the training and experience we have. That difference never goes away. There’s a lot of political pressure to reduce mental health resources to veterans to save money. That’s a terrible idea. In the future there’s a veteran who won’t get help because of inadequate resources and that vet is capable of acting out with skillful violence when resentment, anger, depression, extreme thinking, loss and trauma drive them to the edge. Veterans should never be abandoned to their demons. That’s just indecent and not in any way a good idea. PS CNN coverage here implies Islamic faith is to blame. I don’t remember you blaming Catholicism for Luigi’s murderous behavior. As I understand him, Christian compassion for the victims of managed health care is a part of what drove him to kill, an act he hoped would bring attention to the systematic killing by care denial by the medical insurance industry. The next time an extreme Christian commits murder in the name of their faith I want to see some deep CNN investigative journalism complete with peanut gallery testimony. Extreme thinking is a yellow flag independent of religion.

Look up snake church West Virginia if you want an example of a peaceful but very extreme group, any religion can take on any form, it’s humans that define their own religion. If you want to see an example of a hateful and extreme group, look up Westborough Baptist Church, they hated gay people and would protest at the funerals of soldiers about it. The KKK is another example of an extremist Christian group, one that is both hateful and violent.
So I’ve given three different examples of extreme Christian groups that are all very different, fact of the matter is, even if someone has a bizarre religion it doesn’t inherently mean they are dangerous, on the other hand some people who hold more traditionally accepted religions and their variants sometimes do crazy things too. A KKK member could be a dude at your local Baptist church, and yes religion is important to the KKK about as much as race. Really, people sometimes do stuff like this for no reason other than mental illness too, kind of scary to think about but you could have a stroke and it could change your personality and make you violent. Just be very careful about how you judge people.
