Great review Sam! I remember seeing this game on the shelf of a local game store (under a copy of TI3) and thinking how cool it looked. It reminds me of the Hellboy/Lovecraft universe. Thanks for shedding some light on the game and making me feel bad for letting it slip through my fingers way back when :)
Great review, Sam. That's a very cool game! Hope FF will reprint it some time in the future. Or, hopefully, do a second edition with more and better stuff! About your setup there... Do you think it would be worth getting a second camera just for close-ups? It got a little hard to see what was going on (die results, the colors of the rings, etc.)
Saw an earlier review and I've had this on my TO BUY list, but damn is it ever hard to find. I'm really excited about this review, great work Sam! Not much to hate about this game, it's THAT good. :D Hopefully someone will point us to the right place to buy this (I'm in CANADA).
+Steve Pruneau You can still get many of the packs and expansions for Tannhauser from the Canadian store Meeplemart.com (www.meeplemart.com/store/Search.aspx?searchTerms=tannhauser&submit=true&type=AND)
Hey Sam, what version of the rules are you using there? Flash guns in the revised rulebook add two dice on a natural 10, not threaten an auto-kill, and I don't recall the mauser having a +2 on all dice either.
+Philip Leavitt I realized, after making the video and posting it, that I was using the 1st edition reference sheet that had some of those things on there, but the core rules I used revised edition. I played it for so long as 1st edition, using those reference sheets...my bad.
Ah, I see. I had noticed this as well (after just getting the game and reading through the rules before watching this haha). Apparently the instakill from the flash guns was considered quite imbalanced in the old rules, so they threw it out (along with a bunch of other stuff).
After hearing Sam rave about this game on multiple top10's I picked this up and hunted down every expansion, even the elusive equipment cards. It's been sitting on my shelf for months unplayed. :o
couldn't agree with Sam's opinion more on the awesomeness of Tannhauser. my favorite amerithrash game in my collection; owned since TOY first printing and it just got better and better with FFG production. Even if you don't win the drawing, seek it out elsewhere, and let FFG know of your interest in the game! it is "out of print", but they did not specifically say they would not return to the IP in the future...
For anyone that would like to see Tannhauser reprinted, please join me in submitting requests to FFG to bring it back: www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/contact/support/
Sam I think our taste on games matches ,i totally agree with most of your lists.I love Tanhauser although I never manage to play. Thanx for giving the game away although I would never had the chance to get it since I was a year late and since I leave on the other part of the Atlantic (Cyprus).I kind of wish I could play with you guys one day
Nice game. I have to say that deathmatch is just a begginning - objective mode and scenarios are the real thing. You can find some official and quite a few good fanmade scenarios and even a custom campaign system with hero advancement. Nice minis (I repainted mine), cool characters, great theme, good mechanics, smooth gameplay - overall a good game. Real shame they've dropped it.
Have it and all the big expansions, just miss some of the character packs. Need someone to play it though. lol My wife and daughter don't like this type of game. I think the Hellboy intro from the first film was what gave the developers the idea to make it. Nice review.
Finally a review! I have my copy + the Russians but have not played it once. And I've owned it for years! Any chance you would be willing to show me the ropes @ one of the CoolStuff meet ups?! Awesome contest btw. Share the love for Tannhauser!
Dude selling this on eBay with 2 expansions an 4 troop packs for £110 really good, but I got no money at the moment, just bought blood rage, imperial assault an rum an bones, also backing the new rum an bones on Kickstarter.........maybe I could still buy it :/
Looks great- I just can't help notice how unnecessarily complicated some mechanics are. For example: "He has a gun with a 6, 10 minus six is four so he needs a 4 or better", they could just say "6 or less" is it really easier to add a math step than to reverse the normal "higher is better" concepts. The damage wheel, oh I'm sure that'll slide around when you bump the table. A cardboard cover like 1/2 inch by 3 inches would be way better. From left "base", then 2 damage, 1 damage, 0 damage. Where, for example, mental drops 7, 6, 5, you'd have nothing in the damage 0, 1 in damage 1, 2 in damage 2 and 4 listed under base. So if you have 2 damage, the cover would mask 2 and you'd be left with 4+1=5. And the cardboard cutouts with giant reference sheet? Seriously I'd have to go buy custom cards for each cardboard token or make photocopies to put below each character sheet- way way too many "let me look up for what this does". Probably too many clanky mechanics for me. It's a shame because it could be streamlined so easily.

My favorite board game! Hope they bring it back or make a 2nd edition of it. :D
Thanks for the video Sam! Great job.. It was really helpful to see the playthrough
Cool looking game. Thanks for the video and the contest Sam.
This game is in serious need of a reprint! Especially expansions. :-)
SAM Thank you for this review. Now we need a live play through.
great review of a great game, Sam! and what an awesome way to show and share love for this gem!

Guys.. i have the base game with NO scenarios. Can anyone help me to find a link to some scenarios for the basic board?

+Sam Healey awesome, thanks! Wasn't sure if those were from 1st Ed. or one of the fan revisions on BGG. Great review of a very underappreciated game!

I have been waiting for this one. Thanks Sam and great job!
Need more Sam reviews.

+veggieh8r Actually, I don't have a clue as to who wrote/composed it...it's a stock jingle in iMovie.
Can you recommend a game similar to this? I really want that tactical, noncooperative squad combat, but I cannot get my hands on a copy of Tannhauser.
After hearing Sam rave about this game on multiple top10's I picked this up and hunted down every expansion, even the elusive equipment cards. It's been sitting on my shelf for months unplayed. :o
+bdmason999 I did the same thing! But where did you find the equipment cards? I've looked everywhere
+G beau Somebody messaged me on boardgamegeek that had a random copy.
bdmason999 send it to me

Great game but I wish there was a How to play video or at least some better learning aids for this game. Thanks for the review.
Nice Contest, but luckily I already picked a ton of Tannhauser stuff up on deep sale from FFG.
Sam, is this contest open internationally too? I've wanted to get my hands on this for so long.

I was always interested in this game. Too bad it's not readily available anymore.

Is this going to be reprinted or revised anytime soon?
Enjoyed the review. I have the base game but seldom get to play unfortunately.
If only I could find the equipment cards!
Awesome video! I have always wondered how this game played.

Who won the contest?
A warmup before the TI3 review :)
If you check out Jeremiah Terry's channel he has quite a few videos for this game.
Sam thanks for reviewing this game! This game is to me as TI3 is to you.

Great game! Great Review! My son and I have enjoyed it immensely as well.
Hey Sam, why is this rated so low on the geek? Why do you think that is?
