After Cliff’s death, in an interview, his dad said Cliff once came into the living room after a gig the night before complaining of a painful, stiff neck. He was oblivious as to how it could have happened, then the documentary crew cut to a shot of him head banging like he was doing at the beginning of this video. Lol

«Cliff would call home and complain about his neck hurting. I’d say, “My gosh. You’re bouncing that head up and down all the time. What does the human head weigh, eight or ten pounds? That’s the weight of a bowling ball bouncing up and down on your neck!”» Ray Burton.

THIS is the Metallica I grew up on! I was 15 in 1985!
They weren't played on commercial radio. They didn't have videos on MTV. And if you saw someone in a Metallica T-shirt you knew they were a fan, and a kindred spirit.
    RIP Cliff
Edit: I agree with Dave. And to be honest, I've always felt that Cliff Burton was the genius behind the musical arrangements and classical influence of the first 3 albums.

I honestly think he would’ve been okay with Metallica’s direction after justice. They always used cliffs philosophy when making moves like that. Cliff was the one that said “we’re not here to play 1000 mph the whole time”

Dave!! You're doing yourself a HUGE disservice by not checking out Death Magnetic by them. That album was a return to form, and the closest thing that we will ever get to this era of Metallica. Seriously. Look past all the bullshit you think you know or have heard from other people and just give it a listen. It was a damned fine album. Solos, good lyrics, and nothing like St. Anger. Don't miss out on a landmark album. For reals.

Hail Blokes! I was born in England (Wimbledon) 7/5/69 (I am 52), my Mum was English as well (Hammersmith)...Surrey is in my blood. My Dad who was American was moving the family from Southern California to Northern California in the summer of 69, so he sent my mother and brothers and sisters on holiday to the UK.
We returned to our new house in the East Bay Area (Martinez, Ca) in November that year, so I only “lived” in England for the first five months of my life.
Growing up in the Bay Area put me right in the epicenter of the best music scene ever!! Exodus, Metallica, Testament, Death Angel, Possessed, Primus, Faith No More, Buckethead...should I go on? shit even Dead Kennedys and Green Day!
I was at this Day on the Green show, these shows in Oakland, Ca were the stuff of legend
I saw Metallica for the first time November 83’ in Berkeley, Ca. I was 14

I was exposed to metallica by my younger brother when Justice for All album came out. I was 18 then. That time was special I am so happy I was a teenager in the 80s. I do agree the 80s was their best music! When James had all that anger and intensity. He actually didn't get sober until I think the early 2000s. They are really awesome live. I saw them live when the black album came out. James got pissed off at the crowd because they were really lame the crowd at that show just was really quite for a metallica show.

Part of the reason that you don't have as many mega-groups is that there are so many bands out there now that the fanbase is extremely spread out. You can be a fan of metal today and have more metal bands to listen to now than you had bands of all genres combined in the 90s or before. A lot of people would rather listen to a more popular artist through platforms like Spotify and if they decide to buy CDs or other merch they will buy from the smaller groups instead.
Personally, I prefer the smaller venues when I go see bands perform. I live outside Chicago, so if I have to choose between crappy seats in an arena and dealing with the added security and parking and overpriced concessions vs taking a 20 minute drive to Joliet to see another band I like where I can actually get a beer and make my way almost to the stage, I'm going with the latter.

There are few if any massive rocks bands emerging in the 2000's because radio is dominated by hip hop and pop music. What remaining rock stations there are only play the classics from the 60's-90's, and there is no MTV to break bands big. Also a huge segment of live music is now taken up by EDM and mega-DJ's. The very few rock bands formed in the 2000's--like Tame Impala--do draw big crowds but are still just arena bands unless playing on big Festival bills like Glastonbury and Coachella etc.

There’s a simple reason why there aren’t nearly as many bands anymore .. talent and work.
My daughter used to argue that with me until I used this analogy.
    Bands I cRappers
    I-------------------
    I
    I
Imagine an even and equal scale.
    Sing? Both sides
    Lyrics? Both
    Instrument? Left side
    Instruments? Left
    Read music? Left
    Write music? Left
    No auto tune? Left
Bands need talent, skill, hard work and literally years of practice. cRappers need a computer to make the music for them that simply repeats the exact beat for the entire song, auto tune and THEN the ability to rap.
YES the cRap takes talent and practice. BUT that’s where it stops. No one anymore wants to work hard. They all expect instant TubeYou fame & fortune.

It's amazing as you said that there hasn't been a takeover by megabands now, but sadly its the fault in my eyes, of popular culture....the last great movement that pushed pop culture was Nu-Metal, which gave us Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, SOAD, Korn, Slipknot....before that you had Grunge and Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden etc, then Hair Metal and Thrash in the 80s: GNR, Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Motley Crue, Van Halen....then the early 80s and 70's you had Boston, Journey, REO Speedwagon, The Cars, Fleetwood Mac, Heart....earlier you had Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Deep Purple, Rainbow, Motorhead....the issue now is go up to your average teenager, and not only will they not know who any of these are, because they're too busy on TikTok, but they have no music scene beyond what MTV puts up, or what they see as a trend on social media.....I feel so lucky to have grown up with both Grunge and Nu Metal, and with parents who lived for the music of their generation....sadly, that is all dead now

7:26 - “There’s no one out there that plays bass like this anymore”
Ah ye of a forgotten memory... Les Claypool of Primus 😂 While Cliff was/is a far superior bassist, Les would probably be the closest.

Ran out of things to say? You must have stopped listening for awhile. The whole Load/Reload era despite the whiners was fantastically written. Give Bleeding me or The Outlaw Torn a shot. As for newest stuff… Give Halo on Fire a shot off of their newest Album. It’s amazing.

Rammstein is still packing arenas. But Cliff Burton was the best. Any bassist that can play like he's lead guitar. 🤘🏻🔥🔥🔥

The one great band right now is Five Finger Death Punch
Iron Maiden is still selling out every night
Other than a couple of country acts like Zac Brown Band
    Music has falling from Grace

Slipknot, Rammstein, System of a Down, all bands that have been around for a while at this point. Not a whole lot of up and comers that are at that level, unfortunately.

Typical Lars Ulrich, drumming too fast. He could never keep a proper beat in a live show.
