Just to clarify something. I know Kamala Khan was not REALLY the first Muslim superhero. I guess I didn't sound sarcastic enough when saying it lol. A trend among SJWs and SJW Marvel is to celebrate that their favorite new character, show, or series is the "First X" even when it isn't true. Just like they did when they called Black Panther the first black superhero movie despite Blade (now apparently changed to a horror movie) and Steel (guess they just forgot about that one) existing. That's why I used a picture of an article that says they were claiming Kamala was the first (and partly to prove that, yes, they were actually spinning that narrative) and then later state she was being "PUSHED" as the first Muslim superhero.
    Hope this helps.

As F. Scott Fitzgerald once said, "Action is character." That means a character is defined not by what we're told about them, but by what they do. The writers of Miss Marvel forgot that. We like Daredevil because he _does_ heroic things; he _earns_ his heroic status through personal struggles, overcoming obstacles, and making sacrifices. On the other hand, we're just supposed to like Miss Marvel because she's an oppressed minority and we're racist if we don't, and we're supposed to accept that she just somehow deserves to have her superpowers because she's just so damn special and you're upholding the white supremacist patriarchy if you disagree.

The answer to the riddle is "sacrifice."
The more I die the more they gain. The more I give up, the better off they will be.
Through blood or tears and awful pain, I'm loved and lost or tossed away. It is through HARD work and even death that my sacrifice let's others to live or a lie of my personal character that allows other to live comfortably. (Think Nolan Batman.)

Ms marvel was not the first Muslim superhero, not even close, the first was Kismet 'the man of fate' in 1941, the book had a hilarious in hindsight name and was well written for the time, marvel's first was Arabian Knight, she isn't even the first female Muslim superhero, Sand from X Men has her beat by nearly a decade, she isn't even the first Muslim legacy superhero since Simon Baz the current green lantern on justice league debuted months before her, she was old hat straight off the presses so we can't even give her such destinations of first or innovative.

A lot of women prefer 'slice of life' stories and that's exactly what the genre in Ms. Marvel is. It's a genre regularly seen in manga and like you mentioned, young adult drama/sitcoms and you're right, it doesn't work for a superhero comic. Anyways, absolutely brilliant side by side analysis!

Most hero manga stories follow the same basic formula of thrusting you into the action then adding background to the characters. In the majority of them the characters grow as individuals and even the self-absorbed ones have some level of selflessness. The ones that don't are called drama...

Mob Psycho 100, kid just wants to better himself independent of his super powers. With actual character growth both in main and side characters. With plenty of action and world saving. That's how you do it right. But the message is very anti SJW, don't blame society for your problems, you can fix yourself.

    • @spaceknight793
      @spaceknight793 5 лет назад +33

Yes. Marvel and DC used to do occasional "a day in the life of" stories, but they were one issue out of 30--a nice change of pace, not the main thrust. I agree completely that women generally expect something much different from their drama than men do. They want that "filler" in between the action scenes. It's where the "meat" of the story exists for them. But men want less filler and more action. The action/adventure is the "meat" of the story for them.
That's one of the big problems with all these feminist books. They keep losing male readers not out of hate or any of that garbage, but out of BOREDOM.

The only female Asgardian that was needed was Valkyrie, Jane Foster Thor was redundant, Valkyrie was awesome and she was one of Hulk's best and most loyal friends. I didn’t know this much about daredevil’s origin story before this video. What I really like about it is that his behavior is very Christian. He puts his father’s will above his own? He suffers persecution because of it but endures? He sacrifices himself for another? That’s practically the textbook ideal Christian, but written in a believable way and without yet explicitly stating his religion. Another contrast between Daredevil and new Ms. Marvel is that the Daredevil comic shows Daredevil’s religion through his actions, but the Ms. Marvel comic just talks about Ms. Marvel’s religion without her doing anything to show it. And as they say, show, don’t tell.

I think another good comparison is with Spiderman. Like Ms Marvel, Peter Parker got his powers suddenly without effort. He becomes an entitled jerk thinking only of himself and lets a thief go because there's nothing in it for him. By the end of the very first issue, Spiderman gets slammed hard by the consequences of his action or rather his inaction when he learns the thief [spoiler!] killed his beloved Uncle Ben. Spiderman completely changes by the end of the issue and you understand his motivation to be a hero from then on with his uncle's words ringing in his ears. In just 12 pages a much better character arc was created - a wallflower bullied by peers, gets superpowers, becomes a fame-seeking jerk, learns a harsh lesson in responsibility, and becomes a true hero. Ms. Marvel completely misses that in her first issue. Despite being muslim, there is very little difference between her and any other teen girl who has strict parents. "Girls just wanna have fun and oh, hey! I have superpowers now!"

Frankly what I've seen of Ms Marvel makes me angry - oversimplistic, patronising (why yes, because white, blonde non-Muslims can only be ignorant bigots and never people who want to reach out yet suck at it) and she doesn't become a super hero because she wants to help people; she just wants to be fawned over. The fanfiction part is also tacky in a universe where super heroes are real. If Samaa Amanat even liked superhero stories, she'd be AWARE of this.

    • @marigoann2755

Another point... that Kamala turns into blonde Ms Marvel at the end - this winds me up because it plays into the learned helplessness behind the current talk about representation - that "oh no, minorities can't have heroes to look up to who LOOK like them, how AWFUL!! :'(" It honestly looks as if the crucial point, creating a HERO who is also a Muslim girl in America, didn't matter at all - just the desire to do superficial box ticking and give her her a comic and her current hype on a silver platter just for being a non-White Muslim girl. This is ironically a slap in the face of Muslim readers who read Marvel for the HEROES who face CONFLICT and POWERFUL VILLAINS. My understanding is Kamala doesn't even get any strong opponents who challenge her throughout her series, ever. She's just a vanity project for Samaa and G Willow Wilson.

I've got to admit @omri gany that would be a fascinating setup. The Crusades are generally seen as some of the worst behavior to come out of Christianity/Catholicism. To have someone gain power from that and need to represent the good in it's source without denying that evil came about from it as well, in the modern world would be potentially very interesting. Especially if the (apparent) source of that power was a divine visitation. Few (in universe) would believe that God would intervene to hand power to someone for any reason. Especially if the power granted wasn't spectacular. (Think more Captain America than Thor in terms of power and ability type)
How many people are willing to follow a good leader, even if they don't necessarily like what that leader can be seen to represent? Even if that leader is truly heroic, leading from the front and relentlessly doing good where and as they can?
Have said power granted to someone who isn't very openly devout, who won't trust the message was true, and you have an internal reflection of that external conflict. A solid contrasting villain would be an utterly immoral crook, someone convinced that all 'gods' are just powerful and clever beings and nothing divine. (if your in Marvel, have the villain point to Thor and the Asguardians as 'proof') Someone convinced that the nature of people is pure selfishness and all else is sophistry, the 'behind the scenes' mob boss of a villain. One that never fights personally, never risks themselves, but easily 'sacrifices' others. (Deliberate misuse of that term here) Where our protagonist is the inverse. Heck for maximum mirroring, have the chief minion to the villain in your opening story sport powers on par with the protagonist and be thrown under the proverbial bus so the villain escapes. Then use that former villain as the protagonists support.
I'm picturing someone with super powers, but weak enough ones (think D-list tier) they simply can't get anywhere on their own. Suckered by the glitz and glory of being a villain (presumably had a small criminal record beforehand so going heroic didn't appeal.) only to find out the reality about the wages of sin. Seeing someone no stronger than he is (in the grand scheme) care about him where his 'boss' didn't would be enough if an offer was made to turn coat. Plus this gives you someone with street smarts on the protagonist's side.
I think it could solidly work out with a decent writer and artist.

Modern comic pace is "movie-like" (around 5-15 min of screen time for page).

He stayed true to his word and sacrificed for his father because that's what his father did for him. In the same way matt sacrificed his dreams, battling murdock sacrificed what could've potentially helped dig them out of their hole. Two things to talk about related to this video.
1st, as far as I am aware, it wasn't actually fate and random magic bullshit that gave Kamala powers, that mist is a thing from the Inhumans called Terrigen Mist that I think in a prior story, was released on the planet and that mist activates latent Inhuman powers in humans since Inhumans are just genetically altered humans. The super heroes she saw were merely hallucinations as she slowly mutated and gained her powers, it wasn't just Ms. Marvel, Iron Man and Cap showing up and magicing powers. This doesn't change the fact that she still got them out of nowhere, I am merely explaining what actually happened to give her powers.
2nd, you mentioning that Daredevil could be a potential role model for people who have lost their sight? I have heard that some people who are blind actually do enjoy Daredevil due to this. Besides that, I am partially blind in my right eye and have been told it would potentially worsen to the point where I am fully blind at some point in my life, and that scares me. One thing I really love about Daredevil is that he is blind, but he still can do all these things in spite of that. The super senses don't even muddy the waters as they come with their own handicaps since Matt is more sensitive to sound and smell so he can easily be overwhelmed by it. I actually am enamored with Daredevil because this fear I have of losing my sight is a non issue to him because through hard work, he pushed passed all of that to make a life of his own which is awesome. You were correct in him being a role model for people suffering from similar ailments.

I think the issue is the concept of checking boxes; they're not writing a great character that happens to be a hero and a muslim, they're writing a muslim that somehow has to become a great character and a hero. While it is important to have representations of all walks of life, this shouldn't come at the sacrifice of good character development and storytelling. I don't give a damn if someone is supposed to be a muslim superhero if they're a dull blank that the author has told us is muslim; that's not just bad character development, you're moving into the realm of blatant pandering at that point. That said, it is a first issue, so I'd like to see if they're just trying to take their time with Kamala's growth into heroism, and not just trying to cram all the checks in on the origin issue.

I'm a female who started absconding some of my uncle's comic collection in the mid 70s, before a grandparent trashed them all. One of my favorite early heroes I collected was the second generation heroes on DC's Earth-2, like the original Huntress, daughter of Batman and Catwoman. It gave her a fascinating perspective on many topics, even with the standard Batman skill set, I always regretted that she was retconned into something else after Crisis. Even the Perez era Wonder Woman wasn't as engaging as she was just coming after of her ultra-feminist mod boring karate era.
I've had to stop collecting as career and family absorbed my budget, but I have not lost my interest in heroes: flaws, journies, and triumphs. We are all heroes of our own journies, but will we come through the belly of Campbell's beast and teach the hard-won lessons. Recent decades give short shrift to the belly: the tests and failures of heroes. They win no victory if they do't face real costs and defeat. But too many star characters of late (sadly, mostly the trumpeted new women like Rey and Danvers) are never tested to the breaking point to learn if they are made of steel or wood.
Lucas got it (despite other issues) and I should have expected his PT would be the failure of the hero's journey after the Skywalker ranch hosted Dr Campbell's documentary. The ST never got the hero's journey started. The hero's journey is such a simple core for storytelling, it's hard to see it dying. Hero became a term of mockery and contempt by the young or hip by the 80s, and that rot keeps spreading. SF and comics resisted but now its metastasizing there too.
I managed to miss comicsgate and sad puppies, dug in a corner of fandom where they were far away, TLJ broke that dam. Now all the heroes, from Who to Spock to Luke, are not just being forgotten, but belittled, smacked, and subtracted from, by jealous people who aren't good enough to make new iconic characters that speak to the audience the way they want.
They can't, because there is no journey. I see far more journies in amateur fan works than what professionals are putting out.

I believe there were also other muslim heroes done in the 70s and 80s. But current comics want to forget the diversity of the past and pretend its a new thing.
Marvel seems to like to market that Captain Marvel is now A GIRL when its not that shocking. The second Captain Marvel was a black woman named Monica and she is still around to this day, but its been noticed how Marvel seems to hide her from the public. I just noticed how similar Kamala Khan's origin story is to Virgil Hawkins (Static Shock, the TV version), which in itself is part of the Peter Parker archetype. I think it works better for Static because it's streamlined. Virgil ends up getting powers after sneaking out to go to a social gathering, the difference is that Virgil disobeyed his parents because he's a teen. Kamala snuck out because she's a teen AND Muslim, the religious aspects seems so pronounced and important but in the grand scheme of things is actually just something else in the pile of crap teens (from their perspective) have to deal with. Its less an issue of content and more execution, if Kamala has more than just a single source of her struggles then her story would be much more balanced.
One thing I actually like about Kamala as opposed to Murdok is her utter normalcy. I don't see Matt Murdok as an actual person, in a way he's the idealistic Christian son. I can easily see Kamala as an actual person with her selfish arrogant teen flaws on full display. If only the first chapter focused on that rather than her religion. We expect Matt Murdok to be a hero, his personality and deposition makes it painfully obvious. Kamala on the other hand isn't a hero, but her journey is learning to become one (though I'd argue she's still too 'nice' for it to work). Kamala has so much more potential than Murdok (based only on their opening chapters), but the Ms. Marvel story is terribly mishandled.
That said, My Hero Academia completely dunk on anything Marvel has produced yet in terms of characters. The character arcs of Deku and Bakugo put Ms. Marvel and Daredevil (and most anything else produced by Marvel or DC) in terms of easy of consumption and depth.

If your character didn't sell well then they move on to the next person with an idea for a superhero.
This Ms. Marvel is 100% dependent on there being a 2nd issue because nothing happened in the 1st issue. To me, the author is basically saying that she can take her sweet ass time and drag this story out because her minority status makes her immune to termination.

I agree with your review. I have some comments, however. I think the issues with Ms. Marvel (Kamala Khan) are the motivation and set-up aspect of her story. I thought she was a decent character in and of herself, as far as I think she is written more like a realistic female. I found it kinda fun to see her learn her powers and her geeky attitude was a bit endearing for me after issue #1.
Not knocking iconic female comicbook characters, though the "Men with boobs" writing issue where characters are just masculine women (Captain Marvel) is a legitimate problem and the SJW/Diversity group seems to only think that a woman is best empowered when usurping a man.
I think the heroic feminine is genuinely something to experiment with in writing. But again, she does not experience anything to earn her powers.

The saddest part is that, as you said, everything she starts off doing could have been fine if she had a Peter Parker moment of nobility. People aren't perfect, and they make mistakes. You can make a hero relatable in that fashion. But you can't do it without showing their noble traits too. They started that entire story off with all of her negative traits and then super powers. Unless her creativity and "progressive" attitudes toward her religion were supposed to be good traits. You could spin them that way but there's better ways to show those. Don't have her sneak out. Have her stand up to her friend's more hardline parents who try to come down on her. Have her do it with a creative argument, maybe have her explanation be animated in a more childish style of art. Then smash cut to her room and her desk. She failed, and then she got home-locked by her parents. Maybe even for her protection. But the whole thing just feels too much like the friend she failed to help's situation. So in a combination of guilt and revolt against the wrong people, she goes to the party anyway. Gets mad that someone else saved her even, its reasonable with her guilt - she wants to hate herself atm. Then she gets her powers. And leave on a question for the next issue. What sort of person is she? The vengeful, beat up my friend's parents, kind? Even have her on the cusp of doing it, then have her back down and just hang out depressed somewhere. Then have a crime happen near to her. Maybe even have her save the assholes from the first comic. You can play all those human conflicts fine but you have to build her up and people won't let you do that if you spend an entire issue giving them no reason to care if you do. Currently there's no reason to care, she's a brat with super powers now. Who cares if she improves because she'll always be a brat. She's full Bakugou syndrome without even the childhood friendship to save her right now.

@@trentmoore6947 Its probably incredibly incomplete. I engineered it from one review video and on the spot, and I'm not writer, but I hope the main point shined through within it.

Sjw characters are not humans. They are unable to express any basic human emotion, they never make any mistakes and they are always right. I don't know anybody who can possibly relate to them, except the author.

The writers, however, are human. There is an interesting story to be told there, I believe.

Miss Marvel tries too hard to be like Spiderman without any of the memorable work.

On the other hand, it's an interesting analysis, in fact, showing some character arc instead of being mired in this permanent "Simpsons-esque Status Quo" or character stagnation would do wonders for characters like Kamala, who, okay, she's introduced as a snotty teenager and stuff, but through the course of her experiences, and as a result of her receiving her powers she matures and becomes a better person, because at the end, superheroes are a metaphor for the transition to be a better person overall.

Yup. That's why I mention that Ms. Marvel #1 has a good set up and structure for a drama. But it isn't so good for a superhero series. And it is possible to have a character arc, character growth and drama while keeping true to the superhero genre and fit it all within the first issue.

None of this had to happen this way. None of the characters, nor their stories, had to suck this bad. Even with weirdos and first timers at the helm of art and writing (if you can all either either). It's infuriating.

So... I just realized that this video wasn't from two years ago, so I decided to leave a comment on how much I enjoyed it. It's good to see people pointing out that comic, novels or movies aren't about the superhero as a singularity, is more about said superhero doing the right thing eventhough he/she has possibly suffered more than the people he/she is saving, but ultimately it's the very reason he/she saves people.
P.s. Did I mention that I enjoyed this video?

Matt Murdock lived his life based on obligation, duty, and the honor of your word. Kamala Khan only lives for herself. So Daredevil tells us that honor and duty can make you a hero, and Ms. Marvel tells us that selfishness is to be rewarded.

It's quite the remarkable feat for modern Marvel comics writers to not just make exceptionally terrible stories, but to make exceptionally terrible superhero stories without the heroism. It's literally in the name. But I guess not being able to read (or think) is a common writer mistake.

Kamala is just a small town girl, living in a lonely world.

Beautifully put. Murdock is a true hero and the fact that they aren't is the problem with the Mary Sues, both female AND male, that are prevalent in comics, film and almost all entertainment.

Coming back 4 years later and watching LD's videos now after what I have seen in movies and news is ... Surprisingly cathartic.
    Good job, LD.
