Campaign 1 was the property of Geek & Sundry and, now, whoever owns Geek & Sundry. Most of the Campaign One Videos are still on Geek & Sundry's RUclips Channel. Critical Role started importing those videos on to their channel a few years ago, but uh... they kinda stopped for some reason. It would not surprise me the episodes still on Geek & Sundry are the ones getting hit with Copyright. There's a reason Critical Role left Geek & Sundry to form their own company.

    This show is based on “Critical Role,” a group of famous voice actors and voice directors from Video Games, Anime, and Western Animation. They came together when, over ten years ago, one of the cast (Liam O’Brian/Vax’ildan) was voice directing Matthew Mercer (the DM) and they started talking about Dungeons & Dragons. Liam hadn’t played since High School, and Matt said he would DM a game for him for his birthday. They invited a few friends/co-workers who were also voice actors. They hit it off and continued playing a home game for a couple years, whenever they had time, which was a challenge due to their busy schedules, but it worked.
    A couple years later, Felicia Day, who was running the Geek&Sundry channel at the time, found out about this game, and asked if they would be interested in doing a livestream. They agreed to do it, but they were skeptical that anyone would watch.
    A few years later, Critical Role was one of the most profitable channels on Twitch, and became their own, creator-owned company. Their Twitch channel had more longterm subscribers than than anyone else, and their RUclips episodes garnered over a billion hours watched.
    Fast forward a couple more years, and the group started shopping the idea of making their show into an animated TV show. Nobody was interested, mostly because TV executives just couldn’t grasp the concept.
    Instead of giving up, they decided to crowdfund a pilot episode. They asked their fans for $750,000, which they hoped to raise in 45 days. By the end of the 45 days, they raised $11.4 MILLION DOLLARS. They smashed all Kickstarter records for TV productions and D&D combined. They had enough money to make a 10 episode season. It was news in all the entertainment industry publications.
    Soon, every studio that originally turned them down wanted to have another meeting. They had their choice now, and chose a multi-season deal and a further development contract with Prime Video, because Amazon agreed to give them unprecedented creative control for first time producers, and final approval for everything.
    That’s what this is.
    Now, the series has been so successful, not only is “The Legend of Vox Machina” contracted fully, Prime Video has already started production on the second Critical Role adventure campaign, called “Mighty Nein.”

    Second trailer does have spoilers but I guess you'll forget before watching so... happy to see more people who enjoy DnD being introduced to Vox Machina. They are a group of VAs who decided in their spare time to play DnD together, half way through a campaign they had so much fun they decided why not share it on RUclips. And it just grew from there. The DM made the world this take place in an actual module you can play yourself. I have my own copy. :3

    @jonathanhibberd9983 15 дней назад +27

    Uh oh, you've summoned the Critters. INCOMING! 😁
    So this was adapted from their campaign, but it's not a 1:1 copy. The first season is pretty close to what we saw in the campaign. Season 2 they took a few more liberties and made some changes to fit the format. This is based on their show which started as their home campaign, so it is absolutely a labor of love. It's their company they created, and Titmouse (Star Trek: Lower Decks, Legend of Korra) has a number of Critters on their team.
    This is based on D&D, but it's also their own custom world. So some things you'll recognize (many of the pantheon, some of the monsters, like the not-beholder that they fought in the trailer (it was a beholder in the actual campaign)). But they're also tweaked to make them "legally distinct from", as well as there are some things that aren't D&D (they actually started in Pathfinder, so "the Everlight" is a god from there, as is the Gunslinger class).
    If you want to see a beautiful fighting scene, season 2 episode 10. It is one of the most beautiful fight scenes I've seen in any animation. This show has a number of great ones, but that is the best. It's well worth a watch.

  • @BigLousClubhouse
    @BigLousClubhouse 15 дней назад +27

    5:54 you mention you can feel the "love" in the animation ... this was one of the highest grossing Kick Starters of all time and Critical Role community (critters) raised over 11 million bucks, most of the people who worked on this show were and or are fans of the Live Stream campaign ... so yeah ... LOTS of love for this show from the people making it!!

    @arandomnamegoeshere 15 дней назад +25

    I always like to think that the "legend" part is key - its a retelling of actual events (the original live play). They took hundreds of hours of live play footage. Gave it to a writer's room full of writers, the players, animation artists who all worked to distill it to what we see in the show. Its not a 1 for 1 representation. But it is the essence of the story. Modulated by the rolls of dice.

    _The Legend of Vox Machina_ may not have won the poll, but... well, I doubt anyone would complain if you watched it _anyway!_
    For a bit of context: _LVM_ is an animated adaptation of the first campaign of Critical Role, a group of TTRPG-loving voice actors -- its setting, Tal'Dorei, began life as a homebrew campaign that series DM Matt Mercer cooked up for his friend and fellow VA Liam O'Brien. Anyone who's been around the anime dubbing scene for a while is likely to recognize the voices of the party, all of whom are played by their own players from the campaign -- and while Mercer reprises a lot of the NPC roles, there's some big names in the rest of the cast as well!

    So, I'm a huge Critter (fan base of Critical Role), looks like others have explained a bit below of the background. I've also watched hundreds of episodes of reactions to TLoVM, seasons one and two, and I can tell immediately just from your reaction to the trailers you will absolutely love this.
    One of the great things about Critical Role is that they have so much content, and all of it is a work of love. This series was a work of love by all involved, not just the members of Critical Role who invented and voiced the roles. One of the head animators contributed to the kickstarter long before anyone knew TitMouse would be involved. The composer, Neil Acree (Warhammer and other credits) wanted to do the music so bad he scored a version of Critical Role's theme song and hired the Budapest Scoring Orchestra to play it, then sent the music to CR just to thank them for considering him. It's a complete passion project up and down. Even the other voice actors, including some of the top people and big name movie actors (two hobbits from LoTR, and at least two actors from Game of Thrones, and one Dr. Who) have worked with the members of Critical Role in the past and were happy to be part of this. So, the passion shows through.
    Season 1 is still coming off the kickstarter. The first two episodes were basically just going to be an introduction to the characters and show a moment from the pre-streaming game they ran in their living rooms. The rest of the episodes, which became possible after the kickstarter, and then Amazon picked them up, are the story arc where the whole group started to realize just what incredible stories they could tell around the table. (and if you like undead, necromancy, etc..., then you will be very happy) By the time they're doing Season 2, they're in their stride and the animation improves more as they start the next big story arc from the streaming campaign. But now Season 3 (and the trailer just dropped yesterday) looks like they took it up a few more notches. And now, they've also been picked up by Amazon to animate their second campaign. It all takes place in the incredibly well-conceived world Exandria, created by the DM, Matt Mercer. The second campaign are different characters, a different location in Exandria, 20 years after Vox Machina. Second campaign ran a bit over 150 episodes, each one 3-4 hours long of DnD. They're now over 100 episodes into their third campaign, also in the same world. Like I said, a LOT of content.
    I can also tell that you will be a hell of a lot of fun to watch this with. This will be fun for you, the fans, and all of the people new to your channel, like myself. I hope to see this on your channel, and you'll get a new subscriber. Cheers!

    5:55 So the people who played the original campaign are all professional voice actors (you've probably heard of at least some of them, your Ashley Johnsons or your Laura Baileys for example) and due to the ($11.3 m) Kickstarter that launched this whole show they have managed to retain full creative control over their show. They hired a bunch of writers and condensed down a bunch of stuff they did in the campaign and scripted it. And now they're all voicing the characters they created and played for something like 400+ hours. And their DM (Matthew Mercer), while _not_ playing every single NPC like he did in the campaign, is voicing a couple of big villains, Trinket the bear, and a ton of miscellaneous background extras.
    If you're interested in more BTS stuff, they did a whole series of (non-spoilery) BTS videos before season 1 came out. Look for 'The Legend of The Legend of Vox Machina'. My personal favourtes of the bunch are the ones about the music and the cast (which is _stacked_ btw).

    Vox Machina was a passion project funded by an IMMENSE fanbase. I think it reached funding goals within a day or something. They weren't sure how many episodes they were going to be able to make and the amount of episodes increased with each new funding goal reached. It's definitely worth a watch and a reaction.

    A bunch of voice actors became friends and played D&D as a stream in a homebrew world called Exandria. Each season (or campaign) the group gets to explore different areas of that world. Now they are on their 3rd season (I think) and their first campaign was turned into a show! Since they are all voice actors they revised the hundreds of hours of gameplay and voiced their own characters again. I'm pretty sure they have another show coming out about their second campaign, but Vox Machina (animated and vodcast alike) was an introduction into the world for the fans as well as the players

    Why hello and bidet new Critter!! October baby here as well...trust me, you are gonna love this.
    I have watched a lot of reaction videos and lemme say, the reactions to this show never disappoint, and I have not seen a single reactor with as much energy and excitement as you when watching these trailers! You JUST missed the Season 3 trailer by like...a day?
    So, YES, as someone who seems super enthused about TTRPGs like D&D, who is curious about the world (Exandria, btw), and about dark & gritty stuff? Go. For. It. Take my like - I'll raise you a quick follow, and I'm eager to see what you've got to say, ESPECIALLY with all your attention to the little details. There are a ton of them in the show. It was a collaborative labor of love.
    Check out their Legend Behind the Legend of Vox Machina videos - it goes into the actors, the animation, the music, etc. So freaking rich in texture!

    The Kickstarter for a single animated special was funded in under an hour and reached the stretch goals to turn it into a full series, and that was before Amazon picked it up. Critical Role is absolutely huge and their second campaign set in the same world is also being adapted into an animated series

    Vox Machina is set in the world of Exandria, the brainchild of Matt Mercer. The series is based off of the first two arcs of their campaign, with some changes for time and pacing. It is FULL of Easter eggs for us Critters (the fandom), but done in a way that makes it accessible to non-Critters. They also made it distinct from D&D to avoid any copyright problems, such as the modified creature that initially looked like a beholder. The world is INCREDIBLY lore-rich. It is high fantasy with the gunslinger you saw being the actual inventor of the first gun, and the skyships being magically powered. The animation is incredible,the music phenomenal, and it is an amazing ride. Even my wife, who wouldn't normally watch something like this is completely hooked on it. And if you have questions, the Critters are generally very welcoming and nurturing to newcomers, so we'll help you out.

    It's always such a joy to see someone discover the Legend of Vox Machina =) I started with the actual campaign and they basically took the best parts and re-made them into this epicness. The cast really loves their characters and they were completely involved with the creation of the show which shows in all of the details (and many easter eggs if you are familiar with the actual campaign XD)
    Basically: Even if you know what is coming by having watched the campaign, you'd be delighted by all the awesome surprises you'd get - and all of this with sticking to the original as close as possible!
    Have fun watching, it's worth every second XD
    The "real" trailer for season 3 just dropped btw, what you watched was the intro of the episodes. They always release that before the trailers =)

    If you go down this rabbit hole best of luck it will hurt but you will love. And if you like undead you'll love season 1. Also on trailer 2 fun fact Grog's (barbarian) broken ax is cause in the game he rolled a 19 and just went to roll damage when the dm said a 19 misses.
    But the thing you need to understand the most about this show, prime video only picked this up after critters funded it (beyond the hopes of the cast by miles) through Kickstarter. They are very active in the show

    The animation studio is Titmouse, a lot of the people there were fans of critical role before.
    I love seeing non Critters and people who don’t know d&d find TLoVM! There’s a lot of lore and history to the world and the show, and most Critters are happy and excited to explain things!

  • @harlequin5664

    the critical role cast have been working in animation for decades, they're all seasoned voice actors that came together over 10 years ago to play a home game for liam's (vax) birthday and continued playing. eventually geek and sundry asked them to stream their home game (this was like really early twitch times)
    while they were doing their second campaign they started a kickstarted first to just make an animated movie but they broke all kinds of records and ended up partnering with amazon to make this show. it's an adaptation, the story is in most parts from the campaign but they rewrote some things (mainly writing out a whole ass party member who was a very problematic cast member who got kicked out very early on) the first two episodes also give us some background of stuff that happened before the stream started, they also streamlined the story a bit more.
    but it's a fully voice acted animated show, matter mercer while still playing some of the NPCs no longer voices all of them and if you look at the voice cast, it's STACKED cause of all of their connections in the industry
    it's truly a labor of love and it shows
    also, the campaign is set in exandria which is matt's world that uses some pathfinder lore elements (pathfinder is an offshoot of dnd after 3.5 which is a lot crunchier than 5e, which they were playing before they moved to stream)

    From what I'm hearing, you would really love this show. It has a lot of love and only exists because of a Kickstarter for just 3 little episodes. 11 million dollars later and a deal with Amazon, we now have season 3 coming out.

    You keep being concerned and asking if the stopping is okay in so many of your videos, and I was just liking like normal. It has been asked enough for me to want to put it in words: I love your pausing and statements/questions. It’s what I watch for. You are awesome and make the watch much better than most other reviewers, especially the ones that just watch full videos without commenting and pretend like they’re adding to the value. I would love for you to watch Vox Machina, but I will continue to watch whatever you throw to us, because YOU are what I am watching for.
