    Imagine having to land a DC-10 full of 296 people with no flaps, spoilers, very little reverse thrust and braking. Without these pilots good decisions and vast knowledge, the plane wouldn't have even made it to the runway. These people were amazing heroes and managed to save more than half the plane.

    • @adamguymon7096
      @adamguymon7096 3 года назад +3

      I highly doubt that they had a real chance to use the reverse thrusts? They can force a person to put their child/baby in a car seat but yet a multi-billion dollar company can tell everyone over a certain age that they have to be seated while not providing the proper accommodations to protect a baby? The FAA should be sued for not enforcing something that was meant to protect but they didn't?

      @@adamguymon7096 The decisions of where to put the babies were not the captain's decision, they were airline policy. OP is praising the cockpit crew's actions, because if they didn't handle it as well as they did, everyone would be dead.

    My heart goes out to flight attendant Jan Brown. I can’t imagine the guilt she carries about telling that mom to put her baby on the ground.

      With the weaknesses in human physiology, that is a horrible plan. Not trying to be mean or crude, but the human body doesn't have the strength to restrain a child coming to a sudden stop like that. Your arms would break, your child's ribs would break against your arms, and a split second later when you could no longer hold on your child would hit the seat back in front of you. Her campaign to try and ensure every child has their own seat, and proper restraints is the best plan. That or rear facing seats with you as their cushion. Passengers don't like flying backwards, though, but that configuration is much more survivable.

      This is where "Policy" is not law? I understand that certain protocols are designed for certain reasons but this is where people need to use commonsense because if you are in a position that you didn't learn from the textbook you can't follow "policy"? The fact that the airline could and would allow the same bad practices along with the FAA not making changes proves that the system is corrupt.

    • @mfraye12
      @mfraye12 3 года назад +12

      @@joshs9878 The human body cannot withstand holding on to an object coming to a sudden stop at those speeds. It would break your arms, your child's ribs would break against the restraint, and once they break free due to the tremendous force they would be free flying in the cabin. Though it goes against parental instinct, the child was indeed safer held on the floor than in the lap, though of course not as safe as they would be if they had their own seat and restraints. The chief flight attendant Jan Brown has since this incident dedicated her life to changing laws to never allow babies and children to not have a seat or proper restraints on flights.

    • @ellicel
      @ellicel 3 года назад +5

      @@mfraye12 Do you know if there have been any changes to the recommendations for children held on laps? I always wondered why small children (who are most fragile and at risk) are allowed to be without restraints on a plane when we would never dream of doing such a thing in a car. I realize that it would be an extra expense for the family but can’t imagine anyone preferring saving money over the death of their baby.

    These documentaries are so sad & to see so many innocent lives taken so tragically. Words cannot express. May all who have died in airplane crashes RIP. I love flying & travelling, but i'd never board most US airlines. American Airlines & United Airlines specifically, have much poorer safety records & i know of a few who've won prizes, yet still wouldn't board these airlines. I remember back in the day.....Continental Airlines & the ill fated series of "15" crashes, involving McDonnell Douglas MD-83 . A friend won a free return flight to/from the US with Continental, but she actually rejected the prize, as she admitted she was too scared to fly with Continental. American Airlines has had approx 858 fatalities & United Airlines has had approx 288 fatalities. I always fly with Qantas, Singapore Airlines, or any of the top 3 Middle Eastern Airlines. Qatar Airways, Emirates & Etihad Airways. Compared to the US airlines & many global airlines, these above named airlines, are some of the world's very safest & best. They have much greater proven safety records, despite a few very sad/unfortunate near misses, pertaining to Qantas's prior consistent & excellent flying safety record, so too, Singapore Airlines. The Middle Eastern Airlines are also brilliant safety wise & service is excellent, for the most part. We fly regularly, so i speak from personal experience. We're off to Europe within the next 6 months & we're again flying with our favourite Qantas A380. We just love flying with Qantas. But then again, it could also have been Emirates A380. Also very good & very comfy. Qatar is the best of the 3 Middle Eastern airlines, but i've never flown with Qatar, only watched you tubers fly with Qatar & other airlines, plus i've read & heard about it on many occasions.

      Someone downloads the original, monetizes it and then re-posts it with just a tiny change in the title. Some don't even monetize them, they just want to get more viewers for their channel; if people don't know it is a re-broadcast the posters get away with the scam.

      They were prob a bit busy trying to keep the plane (relatively) straight and level. There's also limit on when and where you can dump fuel, so you know, they don't posion everyone on the ground. If they have the time and space to do it, sure, but it is not a priority when you're struggling to control the plane.

    • @zeusmujahid6041
      @zeusmujahid6041 3 года назад +11

      LnA fingerfoods the fuel dump, is a hydraulic controlled process, and they probably were not able to do that. Plus, dumping fuel means, that the pilots can’t go around, even if they regain control. So, it would’ve been very dangerous. And, most importantly, the pilots were too busy. Haha (I’ve been in a crash before).

    • @chasekruse7047
      @chasekruse7047 3 года назад +15

      Air mechanic here. So the reason they don't is because it causes many more problems then solves. If they dump in the wrong place then Avgas is landing in peoples pools and schools by the gallons. Secondly its a hydraulic controlled system, so even if they wanted to they couldn't as hydraulics were gone. Finally theres no point, the only thing fuel did was make the plane heavier. I assume you're talking about the fireball, which would have occurred even if the plane had no fuel whatsoever in it

      The same could be said about motor vehicles. 40k people die a year. Ones and twos, the occasional pile up with heavier casualties. The shock is when an airliner goes down, its hundreds. Believe it or not, it's not a common occurance. Air travel is still actually safer than driving your car.
