“Every time you touch it you have to realign it” that aptly sums up the camera in general. The most frustrating camera I own. You get what you pay for.
Large format in general can be really frustrating. The Intrepid 4x5 and 8x10 as cameras are fairly competent. Basic, but competent. I have a Zone VI and a Chamonix 45 N2, and both do the same thing, just a little nicer. The reason I said that about using the Intrepid in enlarger mode, is that an enlarger has to be aligned relatively precisely. When taking a photograph it just needs to be focused on the ground glass.
Very little modern tach is actually an improvement. The LED flashlight is one of them, as is the LED bulb for condenser enlargers: no heat. And some things don't need to be "upgraded." 👍🙂
I have not heard of that Interpret LED light source yet. The Heiland LED light is at 1.700EUR/$ which is out of scope for me.. But a naive question: Why you do not place that LED on the Besseler ? Red LEDs are good red lights. I have decided myself to use yellow and red switchable and with changing voltage for intensity. Not as stripes, but as 12V spots. Pro and cons is that you can easier darken the room in certain areas compared to others. Less with red than with yellow this helps to reduce issues with paper, ortho film ,... May be I am too cautious At end still the same thing. aside of one place next to enlarger/dry workplace. There I mounted a yellow and red spot in a desk lamp (mounted at wall) which head can be rotated and in height regulated.
I would have to take the top stage of the Beseler off in order to get the Intrepid light source close enough to the negative. It could be done, but I don't want to mess up the Beseler enlarger.
@@EdwardMartinsPhotography I don't like wireless anything- too many batteries and problems. Sure, it's to have the audio in the file, but I find it is always better to have synced audio (with a backup on the camera) than wireless. The exception is for live; then you NEED audio out of the camera and mics going into it.
I guess it could, but a test strip gives you a lot more information. You need to dial in the contrast as well as the exposure. Exposure takes care of the "too light/too dark" question. But only a test strip will tell you what paper grade you will need answering the question "too flat/too contrasty."

I really enjoy your videos, and always nice to see someone that's not afraid to share opinions - keep it up! 👍
In my film days, i adopted a trick from Ansel Adams. I used a microwave oven to quick dry my test strips. My exposures were spot on after that.
But the coffee always tastes weird... 😁
The old "I can't work while you are watching me" trap. Know it all too well.
nice mix of antiques and high tech, go with what works.

Cool stuff, Ed!
Thanks!

As you're talking, I looking at your wireless Rode mic.
I really dislike the Rode wireless mics. I'd buy the DJI ones if I have to replace it.

Can an exposure meter be used to judge the exposure without making test strips?
