Some Jingle Bells "Did You Know..."
On December 16, 1965, “Jingle Bells” became the first song played in space during NASA’s Gemini 6A flight. That is a long way from its beginnings in 1857.
"Jingle Bells" did not begin life as a Christmas carol. Legend has it that James Lord Pierpont - who was the nephew of JP Morgan - wrote the tune for his father’s Sunday school class for Thanksgiving. However, as you read the original lyrics, you could conclude that they might have been a bit too risqué for an ecclesiastical audience. The slightly defiant Pierpont created the song with a rebel-without-a-cause attitude.
***Lesser-known verses talk about picking up girls, drag-racing on the snow, and a high-speed crash. I love the idea that back in the day there were drag-racing sleigh drivers!
