  • Anton Heiller's "Hymnus: Ave Jesu, lux serena," from "Vesper," recorded at Vespers on Sunday, February 19th, 2023.
    Text:
    Ave Jesu, lux serena,
    Summe bonus, summe plena,
    Veritatis speculum.
    Tu imago, tu figura,
    Patri unum in natura,
    Quo subsistit saeculum.
    Ave Jesu, primus homo
    Cum deceptus vili pomo,
    Paradiso pellitur,
    Mundi sine causa tali
    Huius tanti causa mali
    Sanguis tuus funditur.
    Ave Jesu, mea vita,
    Consummandus tandem ita
    Tactu mortis rigido,
    Patri caput inclinasti,
    Inclinando expirasti
    Cum clamore valido.
    Ave Jesu, quam decora
    Illa fulsit tunc in hora
    Resurgentis species,
    Qua fulgente renovatur,
    Novo flore purpuratur
    Maesta mundi facies.
    Ave Jesu, tunc in coelo
    Veritatem sine velo
    Nova pandet civitas,
    Cuius non claudentur portae,
    Ubi vita sine morte,
    Ubi summa caritas.
(from Engelbert of Admont, Psalterium de D. N. Iesu Christo)
Translation: Hail, Jesus, serene light, highest good, greatest fullness, mirror of truth. Image, figure, equal in nature to the Father, through whom all ages are sustained. Hail, Jesus: since the first man, deceived by a mean apple, was driven out of paradise, your blood is shed in the world without reason for the sake of such great evil. Hail Jesus, my life, struck down by the harsh touch of death; inclining your head to the Father, you died with a great cry. Hail, Jesus: with what great beauty the sight of your resurrection shone forth, by which the sad world is brilliantly renewed, purple with a new flower. Hail, Jesus: then in heaven a new city awaits the unveiling of truth, whose doors are never closed, where there is life without death, where there is the fullness of love.
