Spent many a moon at this mall. I can tell you Fayette County, where this is, didn't really give 2 poops about covid. Also, the area did have a pretty huge amount of commercial outgrowth post mall construction which didn't help it much.

This was a blast from the past! I was Manager in Training for that Finish Line circa 2004 after graduating from Cal U down the road in '02. The mall was starting to get a little sketchy back then, and there were lots that stayed empty in a couple of the wings for a long time. The Finish Line floor space is HUGE. As a result, we were always sent all clothing on sale and discount shoes from our entire district... rounders upon rounders of cheap clothing; good to get rid of them for the company, but, man, our price per transaction was usually pretty low.

Ah, I remember Uniontown Mall from when I was a kid. Although I hadn't been to that one as much as Laurel Mall, or Westmoreland in Greensburg, or even Greengate when that was still in existence.
I'm looking forward to your Laurel Mall video. The last time I was there was back in 2013 when I was visiting the area and stopped there for nostalgia's sake/morbid curiosity, and the first thing I noticed was the inside of the mall smelled like a giant pile of dirty laundry that had been left out and someone's solution was to cover it with more dirty laundry.

As you have probably noticed, there has been absolutely NO PLANNING in Oniontown. NONE! Randomly scattered stores and restaurants dot the landscape. Many of the businesses that left the mall are now inconveniently located in stand alone structures. The county permitted a new Aldi store to be built despite anchor space and amenities already in place at the Onion Mall. Good sources say the management absolutely will NOT work with tenants on rent. Closing anchors resulted in diminished foot traffic, yet the mall management doesn't feel it necessary to adapt to the reality. One store manager said they were not able to maintain profitability since foot traffic disappeared, and asked for a reduction in rent. The mall management refused--evidently preferring NO rent to receiving a reduced amount. It appears NAMDAR doesn't care about strengthening this property.

It had a pretty big food court there near JC Penny in the late 80's-early 90's. Back when I worked in local radio they had a pool tournament in the food court that I broadcast from.
Bought my wife's engagement ring at one of the jewelry stores there and she worked there at the old McCrory's before I knew her.
Saw a lot of movies there too.

One thing that is never mentioned is imagining a system where profit and capitalism is not the main objective. Imagine how much good these facilities could do if they were used for public medical, dental, performing arts, art and recreation. Just imagine. Instead of leaving it to rot or for the next developer to try and extract more profit from it. Keep up the great work. I really enjoy your videos!

My most significant personal historical mall experiences were with - Pheasant Lane Mall - on the NH/MA boarder, back the mid/late 1980s, along with - Burlington Mall - some miles to the south in MA, both still standing, but nothing like what they were in the 1980s, when the "only" major shopping was mall shopping, long before amazon, and the rest of e-retail began to bulldoze "in person" shopping nearly out of existence.

This was great. (Although once again I grr'd at the idea of a mall removing its fountains. Here in Australia, one of my favourite indoor/outdoor malls still has a water feature.) I'm amazed you're on the opening-back-up upswing. Here in Sydney, Australia, we've just locked down again due to a Delta outbreak. We're only around 10% vaxed, so can't take chances with Delta.

I was in this mall shortly before the pandemic before seeing a movie in the adjacent theater (I believe they’re now an AMC theater) with some friends. There was some decent foot traffic at the time and there were a few good stores, but I could tell the place was on its way out. COVID was probably the nail in the coffin for many tenants and the population of the Mon-Fayette region has been declining for decades.

I used to work at the Sears when it was there for a couple years...the fact that they let that call center move into the area that used to be the food court pretty much killed foot traffic...add on the crime from the teenagers, this mall just needs to close

Sal, I'd get a major kick that Crown American Realty Trust had the same letters as the Championship Auto Racing Teams, or CART. With me being an Auto Racing Student, this would be the Virginia 90 Exlog for Richmond and their Cup Series # and the Turquoise fits b/c of Heilig Meyers. Carmike Cinemas always got big off of Mergers and Acquisitions and they've monopolized the Cinema Scene in a Lot of Cities, like mine in Cedar Rapids.

Can you do an update on Petal the Elephant? Its been years since it was 'saved'. The only recent info I found was sept 2019 when it was part of a parade.

"If you don't know what's in that container, what makes you think it was safe to pour down the drain?"
Yeah, c'mon, Jose. You're supposed to drink it before you do anything else.

I was shooting some video in the section heading back to teletech, and I stumbled onto a security guard who looked at me suspiciously. There are some interesting sights back there.
