Dramatic Catching, Sorting and Big Beef Calf Loading

- The time has come to catch and sort two loads worth of our biggest calves that were weaned this past fall. In three days worth footage, I catch the calves by feeding in the Kubota. Then they are pushed up into the pens where we can sort off the larger ones and knock off the ones that aren't quite up to weight yet. Cattle can become wild and unpredictable when in these situations so the danger factor is always there. We try to handle them as easy as possible to create less stress for these animals. I was raised on a cattle ranch in Namibia. The cattle ranged across various camps in 5000 hectares and ate natural grass, only needing some supplementary lucerne if we had severe droughts. They came back to our water points/troughs morning and evening. Roundups for dipping and dosing against ticks and worms was easy (drove them through dipping pits and dosed in the cattle grip. Now and again we would inject against specific diseases, but our cattle farming was waaay less intense than yours.
The cattle follow you like the Pide Piper - they know all about feeding time. That sure makes an easy way to move a herd.

I just found your channel yesterday and love its content. You do an awesome job editing your video as well, and your shots are beautiful. I was wondering what breed of dog your dog Buster is? I have Great Pyrenees Anatolian cross for livestock gaurdians for goats and sheep, but love the short hair of your dog. I think it is amazing that you have a dog that size herding. I am just starting to test herding abilities of some young dogs that are out out a Great Pyrenees /Anatolian dam and a herding Border Collie sire. They are doing ok, but I might need to cross one more time to the herding to get the instinct I want. I hope to do this with our losing a lot of the size I have gained. Again that's for your great content, I am truely enjoying your videos.
Thank you! Buster is a black mouth cur. They are bred to hunt and work cattle. Very good baying dogs. That might make an awesome cross with the breeds you are referring too.

Just curious, have you guys ever considered hay saver feeders? They are more expensive than traditional bale rings, but the amount of waste reduced is pretty astounding.

Thanks! Well we have all sorts of hay racks/rings and understand how much hay gets wasted with certain types. We’ve talked about it and I’m sure before too long we will be upgrading. Some of them are getting in pretty rough shape.
Wow, quick reflexes there climbing up on the fence rail! Looked like one of them jumped clear across the top of another calf about the time you got out of their way. Good video! What kind of herding dog is that? He's pretty.

@@HedgeAppleAcres Ryan Nangle has some pretty good tutorials on here. mLut by MotionFX is a good color grading plugin that is free and also Alex4D has some good free plugins that are very useful.

Been there, done that. Lead, don't chase. That's the hard way.
Create an opening where one animal wants to go through and they all want to go through. Small push from the rear. Don't chase. Open up space for the lead. Work smart, not hard.
I'm a new sub .. and I have enjoyed watching your videos ..but its starting to get a little boring watching you work cattle every day .. I liked the one where u cleaned out the spillway .. and cut some hay .. fed a few baby calves .. but you and your dad working cattle every day gets old .. I did see you go find some boards .. in those old barns but never saw what u done with them,, or saw anything you have made for your house,, or any part of the new house,, haven't any maintenance on your equipment,, really not sure if i will stay a subscriber or not .. im from south central wisc ,, and do watch a lot of youtube,, thats how I stumbled upon yourr vids ..
I understand and I agree, it does get old but that’s pretty much what we’re doing right now and super busy with. I don’t even post half the cow working stuff and try to only post the more interesting ones.
I definitely have a ton of good videos planned out when we finish up with the majority of the cattle working. Those are also the videos that are doing the best on my channel. Trust me, I love making videos of the other stuff I just don’t want to start boring people of things like me welding on the feed truck all day yesterday and fabricating a new spout that broke off.

We usually don’t need the help of dogs but that is a good breed for cattle!

No, high protein coastal hay along with other feed. They were on wheat for months also.

Why not use a horse???
You need to invest in a rrained cattle dog instead of having that big guardian looking pup trying to help. Made more work than necessary and hard on cattle being pushed that hard. Beautifil operation you have there.
Deby Zimmerman Thanks. I believe the cattle were going to run no matter what. They are very used to this dog being around them. Buster is a black mouth cur which is bred to be more of a baying dog, not a herder. We didn’t really get him with the intention to be a cow dog.
@@TheFarmGuy thats cool...know nothjng about the Cur breed and having grown up around csttle I know they don't need a resson or excuse to run, especially when and where you don't want them to. The only reason I said anything about the dog is I've seen the trouble a nonherding or untrained fog can do, even if all they do is run outside the fence alongside barkng. I noticed your one cow seriously appeared to be planning on going right over you if you hadnt climbed up that panel. You've got quite a place and it was enjoyable and brought back memories missed watching you doing chores. Thanks for sharing a day of yours with those you don't know.
