    I do find it puzzling that so many American's find it difficult to understand/get into UK rap due to accent/slang and cultural differences (and this despite the fact that American accents/slang vary immensely from region to region - as they do here, albeit to a lesser extent cos we a much smaller country), and yet I've never met a British person who's ever had any difficulty getting into US rap for the same reasons. Maybe it's just because US culture kinda dominates due to the sheer size and nature of the country (as well as rap/hip hop obvz being of American origin), or maybe it's something else. Regardless, I'm glad you gave the album an unbiased listen and didn't let any of that stuff put you off, cos it really is a sick record!

      In the past month I’ve started really getting into UK rap. People can easily google a list of U.K. slang and use context clues imo. I fw the accents. I’m American, but being from a Caribbean family some slang and way they talk is kinda similar to me.

    • @Slesaint17

      thereisnorobogibbonSOB I’ve actually had friends who aren’t American or British literally go out of their way to TEXT me “damn man, why didn’t you introduce me to UK hip hop sooner, I think it might be better than the US”...i think it’s really only Americans who have difficulty trying to learn about other cultures. But I don’t get it because a lot of the old school rock and even pop they listen to is mainly british as well...

    i’d recommend going back to songs like toaster and northampton’s child and paying attention more to the story that he tells rather than his flow or the beat. they’re two of my favourite songs on the album just because of how personal they are

    You raised a great point in this video about flow Myke, I've always noticed that UK artists tend to have a more calculated flow that at times feels quite melodic/poetic with a bit of smoothness, I don't know where it comes from but I think it must come slightly instinctive due to MC culture from garage/jungle/etc being so present in a lot of the rappers' upbringings

  • @iwasgonnasay
    @iwasgonnasay 4 года назад +34

    i think it's totally fine that you outline you don't personally appreciate rappers from other cultures and languages as much, that makes sense. the only issue in my mind is when people disrespect the objective quality of music in other languages/realms just because they can't understand it, which is not what you're doing; that's your personal preference and obviously your personal preference is nobody's business but yours.

    • @GNRGNRGNR100
      @GNRGNRGNR100 4 года назад +2

      I think being unable to understand or vibe with music from other cultures is a uniquely american thing. Like obviously personal preference and all but america seems to be the only country so far up its own ass with regard to entertainment and culture despite america being an amalgamation of other country's cultures. Plus being unable to get past a lyrical barrier for music seems a bit weird. Music is Lyrics, Sound and Melody, i'd argue that lyrics play the least in really making a good song. Haru Nerumi's Narashite is a good example. I literally know only one word yet the sound and melody speak to me so deeply

    • @Slesaint17
      @Slesaint17 4 года назад +1

      Desmond I definitely think it’s a uniquely American thing, American media is all over the world so people from all cultures and countries can understand American media and entertainment AND they are more used to taking in entertainment from different countries rather than their own. However, in America, the only media and entertainment they listen to or watch is American so they’re not used to accepting different cultures of entertainment.

    This is my favourite album of 2019. Happy to hear your thoughts on it! It's interesting listening to your explanation of why you don't enjoy foriegn hip hop albums much due to the cultural and language barriers. As someone not from the US I never even realised that could be a thing since majority of the music I consume is of a different culture by default (I live in the Caribbean).

    I'm not normally into UK hip hop either, but i really liked this, and I actually enjoyed Doorman a lot, i just love how driving and energetic it is. It also feels appropriate because it sounds influenced by British post-punk, and that makes when considering how this whole album is about British culture. I will say though, that between this and that Little Simz album that also came out last year it makes me feel kinda bad about dismissing UK hip hop like I have in the past, because both were easily in my top 5 hip hop records of 2019.

      "look up the jamjar" ~ Myke C town

    • @CaptainJTSpaulding
      @CaptainJTSpaulding 4 года назад

      In Cockney Rhyming Slang (a traditional form of slang used in London) "Jam Jar" is rhyming slang for "Car" . So the verse is highlighting/playing on some peoples preconceptions of being surprised at a black man being in a nice expensive car.
      The "That's for all the jokes about the jam jar" could also have a double meaning and be a bit nice bit of word play and referencing a ****ing racist Robertson's jam logo that used to be in existence and which some dumb ****s no doubt called Skepta at some point when growing up. So it could be a two fingers up to them, as a "you tried to belittle me, look what I'm driving, look what I've made of myself". Which is pretty dope.
      I say "could be" as for all I know, could be reading too much into it and he might not be referencing the jam logo etc and making any such kind of statement at all. Might just be as simple as before the Wraith he drove and old banger and people ripped the piss out of him for driving it. IDK I've no idea of his car history.
      Someone would have to ask him about the line, or wait for him to speak on it.

    I’m Welsh.
    I don’t think Britain is great, it’s another way of saying English Imperialism.
    Not bothered about rap much, I do like Lowkey.

    Yep, UK accents are a turn off for me as well. And that tone of voice. I like Skepta too, smooth deeper voice. To me Slowthai says "chav". very chavvy, chav-like. Bratty. Rebellious. Anti-Brexit, very political. Obnoxious sort of person. But yeah he's cool and he can rap, I liked his song with Denzel Curry (Psycho).
    Also: BOEH! xD
