How to make a homemade BGA reflow soldering station / home made video chip rework machine

  • The following video is about a home made BGA soldering station. Pay attention that some of the most important things on it are to control the temperature ON the chip we are working with (or next to it). Another is to use a bottom preheater and also to find the way to reproduce the BGA reflow graphic. I used two step temperature controller and I added a pedal to help to integrate the temperature rising slope and to match my graphic to the BGA reballing chart.

    Thanks by watching it! :-)

    good work! I'm receiving a couple CPUs this week where I need to remove the Integrated Heat Shield from. The Heatshields are soldered on with an Indium Alloy (melting point around 140-157°C). I only need to remove the Heat shield, not solder anything on. What do you think is the appropriate profile for this? Just preheat to 120°C to remove water, then go to around 160°C until the heat sink can be removed with tweezers? Thanks for any comments and keep up the great work!

    Hola! Your English is very good! Even tho your setup isn't real high tech, it definitely works! Thanks for explaining the heat cycle/profile schedule and timings. Do you have different tips for the hot air gun? Wish you could have done a board!

    very nice i like to see that you used your brain and found a work around to having all of the special equipment. I have been trying just what you had shown, finding 1 to week and 1 to powerful, this is just what I did with just problems. this is very helpful. Thank you very much. If at some time in the future make a video of how to assemble your machine with the time and power controls and how they are wired please let me know . thank you again, Aron

      Hi! Thanks by writing.I will make some videos in the future about how to make more sophisticated machines. This one is a very easy one, but with enough controls to perform good job, and it can feed most beginner's budgets.
      I made very sophisticated machines in 2001 as a process and designing engineer... But now, as new immigrant with small baggage, I had to do it as a lot of you guys did it around the world.
      There will be more videos about homemade BGA and SMD stations, and some basic lessons about to the right way to do it. :-)

    Hola Bob, el pedal controla la temperatura del rework y del preheat, o solo del rework¿ las temperaturas de ambos elementos de calefacción deben aumentar iguales en la grafica o la del preheat se mantiene a una temperatura menor¿ Gracias

    • @bob.kalpon1398
      @bob.kalpon1398  6 лет назад

      Hi! This machine is very rudimental. Temperature is a profile that requires 5 different controlled levels. The best way is to use a micro-controller. If we can't use a micro-controller, then we can use a pedal to alternate the heater on and off, and try to keep the expected temperature in the termocouple.

      Hi! The chart id for 63/37 solder. For RoHS is higher temperature than it. Now days the fashion is RoHS because the new agreements about pollution. I used the chart because its six temperature-times illustration.

    Hello, I would like know how prepare temperature profile when chip has operation temperature is 80 degree C? Thanks for support and explain how I make this the profile.

    • @bob.kalpon1398
      @bob.kalpon1398  5 лет назад

      Hi Tomas. The operation temperature is something different to reflow temperature. Your chip works hours or years close to 80 degrees and it shut down by safety after it. The soldering temperature in SMT process goes to a peak of 217 or 245 degrees for just few seconds. To make a good solder SMT profile for build, we must consider the components datasheet, and the solder datasheet too. To make a rework temperature profile for repairing, requires more strategy like covering or removing THP components.

    • @tomashasoft4938
      @tomashasoft4938 5 лет назад

      Hi Bob. Thanks for support , My question was on working temperature because is in datasheet but rework|soldering temperature no and I afraid overheat BGA " popcorn efect " chip eg. 130 degrees like preheating DPS and then about +50 degrees/10s +40/5s = 220 degrees.

    • @bob.kalpon1398
      @bob.kalpon1398  5 лет назад

      @@tomashasoft4938 Aha! That´s the most important part. There is not way in Electronics Manufacturing SMT process can start if components didn't accomplish the oven baking process. I never work in cold, or high humidity. I learned from one old fox in the 80´s to leave the components in a box with a 100 Watts lamp for one or two days as minimum. (It also for the equipment out of use for a while. It was in a tropical country with very high humidity). Pop effect is not because temperature out of range, but for internal humidity. The best way to rework is to bake the component one day before even it is at lower temperature, (Bad advice but better than nothing), and preheat the under area before to rework. In this case, hot air can be the best. But for a single component like capacitor, resistor, small transistor, the soldering iron works fine as well as we rate less than 10 seconds in the melting point. There is more to consider depending of the need and rules. For aerospace manufacturing, hot air reflow in electrostatic air control at 100% of the solder process is required. (There is not iron, and nothing alike can make contact with the components). But it is other telling and teaching for those needs.

      Hola! Si bien USA, UK, España, India están entre los diez primeros países de mi audiencia, la gran mayoría de la audiencia no son de habla inglesa y hablan algo que conocemos como "broken English". El asunto de enseñar no trata de lucir como catedrático ni tampoco en español, si no de poder hacerse entender para que el educando pueda aprender con mayor facilidad. Me verás haciendo lo mismo aún en español, pues Filipinas está entre los diez primeros países de la audiencia y su actual generación apenas comprende lo más básico del español heredado de sus abuelos. Hay audiencia de Brazil, Portugal y Romania, quienes ven mis vídeos en español intentando aprender de algunos de ellos. Por otra parte, más del 50% de toda la audiencia la componen países árabes y Asia Menor a quienes hay que llegarles con un inglés más lento y acorde a sus limitaciones. Otro limite es que muchos son técnicos o aspirantes a reparaciones, por lo que aún no incursiono en temas de ingería o fórmulas de cálculo. Gracias por la corrección de todas formas.
