  • In this video I swatch all my Lyra Aquacolor Water soluble Crayons on black paper. I swatch them both dry and wet and give you a comparison through drawing a still life. I use black paper in Part 1 and in Part 2 I will use white paper. Which do you prefer? Does it even work?
    Thanks @Sandi Hester for the still life inspiration!

    Would be interesting to use the one you've put water on as a base and put more crayon over it in parts, creating highlights or places of particular focus.

    I have seen how some artist use watercolor on black paper but mostly white is used, this is great for these crayons. I will need to try, thank you.

    After seeing you use these on your collaboration with Sandi I got a set to use when my granddaughter comes to visit. I must say we've had so much fun with them. When I've completed my current commission I plan to play around with them more.
    Your paintings are both beautiful and I personally think there is hope with using a combination of the two techniques you've used. The watered down as a base and dry over the top for personality.
    Thanks for sharing.

    Tengo esos crayones y estoy encantada con ellos. Los utilizo sobre papel de acuarela blanco de grano fino y ahí es donde los colores se vuelven más intensos y vibrantes al aplicarles agua. En cambio, en ese papel negro parece que ocurre lo contrario y me gusta más la versión en seco. Me ha resultado muy interesante ver esta comparación.

    I'll probably come across as terribly unrefined but I'll still say that my most favourite look is crayons (including Crayola) on rough watercolour paper. When I need the water solubility part, I almost invariably use Neocolors. There's just something about the way Caran D'Ache formulate their colours, I've noticed it on both Luminance and Neocolor. Somehow their colours possess magnetic depth. Whereas Lyra is, to my eyes anyway, a robustly made quality German product. Something like the Lukas watercolour range: the quality is good and reliable, but not much there in terms of imagination. This could be a good thing in some contexts. Lest you think that I'm some sort of a Caran D'Ache groupie, I feel that Derwent possess this indescribable quality too, in their understated, subtly melancholic colours. Needn't be something super-expensive, just look (and feel!) the Derwent Artists' and Studio, or Drawing, or Graphitint pencil lines. I just get drawn into their world, even if it's not a world I normally live in. For some reason I don't get that with Prismas or Holbein but strangely enough do get that odd tingle when drawing with Irojitens. Sorry, I'll go get my chill pill now. Lovely video!

      @MelanieChadwick  2 года назад +1

      Don't think so at all, I'm all for crayons! Actually since using the Caran D'ache neocolor I do see a difference between them and the Lyra, they're just a little more creamy and the colours are a bit more nuanced however the Lyra have been a good introduction to watersoluble crayons. I also do love the Inktense range of pencils by Derwent. Thankyou for your kind and interesting comment!

    I prefer the one with no water added. I like the texture but agree with you maybe a combination of water and then using the dry crayons to get the texture and life back into the drawing

    I agree that a combination of the 2 would work really well Melanie, perhaps the water soluble effect for distant objects and areas with the more vibrant dry pigment for a more punchy affect to bring foreground objects forward. The dry seems happy and the wet seems melancholy and more poetic to me. Lovely films as always. 💐

    I love that you did this comparison! While I prefer the one with less water here, I could see using the water just in a few places (not all over) to perhaps move something to the background? Also, you could add some color back in by dabbing a crayon directly with a damp brush and reapplying, just to try? Fun to play around with different effects.

    • @MelanieChadwick
      @MelanieChadwick  3 года назад +1

      Thank you! I like that idea of going back in and adding texture particularly on the objects that are closest- think that will give depth to the picture. It is fun to experiment and not be precious!

    Hi Mel! Thank you for this demo, it is greatly appreciated 👍🏼. I have some inexpensive brands, but have been looking at these. LOVE the vibrancy on the black paper and all the texture. The watered drawing is interesting. I wonder if it could be punched up a little by adding in more color in a light layer, and you could add back in some of the highlights? Looking forward to part two! X

    So happy you posted this (thank you!),I decided to just go for it and ordered a set of 48 which I'm waiting the arrival of. I think dry they do encourage a boldness of mark making. And I love how they look dry on black with the ground showing through. I think it probably is best to use a layer of wet colour with dry over the top.I like how vibrant they are which shows how pigmented they are. I think maybe if you want to use them with water alone they are probably better on white paper. But I am with you in liking how they look dry on black paper,I am going to use them for "Huevember" this year and will create a series on postcards. I have also ordered some black watercolour postcards for them.I might also use them dry over watercolour.I think dry these would be great for life drawing too.Look forward to part two! Actually I loved the sound of them on the paper as you were using them.Also may I ask what is the best thing to use to sarpen these crayons. (Matt)
    P..s for "Huevember" and "Inktober" I'm using a range of watercolour postcards,some of the Seawhite ones that you reccomemnded, some craft card ones and some black watercolour postcard ones. I love postcards and I want to use this format as a base for these two art challenges.
