While on Hangover DPDR worsening...
I’m just simply at a point in my life where I realize the alcohol makes it worse.
I started to cry when you said I will recover from DP❤❤❤
Don't worry, you can and will recover 😊 ❤www.dpmanual.com/articles/back-to-normal-after-depersonalization/
I get drunk a couple of times a week (well not “drunk”. but about 5-6 beers or so) it can be really bad the next day tho but it’s a break bc I am in a constant fear and sensation that I’m going psychotic witch is way worse than dpdr (I don’t get hangovers other than anxiety)
I first bought the DP manual back in 2018, and it's been a huge help! Not to discourage anyone, i've been dp-free for about 2,5 years on end. But i always find myself coming back to this video. Just because i think consistency is a big one.
I'm in a relapse right now, which are always scary because you thought you were ''cured''. And even though i have the tools, i always have to sit and think to myself, what changed? i had some stressors in the past months but i've slowly slipped more and more alcohol in my life to deal with it. From a couple of drinks in the weekend to basically 2/3 beers every day at some point. I think the take-away here is that even though you're recovered, treat your DP like it's always there in a way. Continue to live healthy and don't slip up, make it a habit. Because it can't be a coincidence that all of the times i've ''relapsed'' inbetween 2018 and now have always been in periods of my life when alcohol intake is high, and healthy ways of living and excersise are at an all time low.
Thanks Sean for helping me through these years, in a bit of a low spot right now. but i've given up drinking for a while as of last week and i'm sure i'll beat this ''relapse'' once again. Also thank you for making this video in particular, the connection inbetween the negatives of alcohol and how it affects your DP/DR is'nt talked about as much as it should in the DP community!
Oh my goodness, this is EXACTLY what I went through after quitting alcohol. The exact same symptoms. It started with waking at 3am one night experiencing an extreme panic attack, like someone holding a plastic bag over my head suffocating me while also holding a taser to my central nervous system. Also, it was much worse at night. I could only sleep during the day. I think I slept 6 hours total in about 2 weeks. I thought I was going insane. I couldn't stand in a shower or even be indoors because the walls would close in on me. I walked 17 miles in one night. Fortunately it got better but I couldn't imagine going a full year in that state. I'll never touch alcohol again that's for sure... scared straight. Anxiety disorder is a nightmare. Exercise really helps me too. Vigorous exercise daily. I also take some supplements now like 5-HTP, L-Theanine, Magnesium, GABA, Ashwagandha, Tumeric and B vitamins that stimulate serotonin, dopamine. They really help a lot without needing to be on pharmaceuticals which I really don't want to be on for life.
"I couldn't stand in a shower or even be inside because the walls would close in on me"
I experienced that, it was a nightmare
I love the fact that you are helping people understand that we are not crazy because as soon as I found out about to your video that I had depersonalisation it got so much better seven months later I barely have it I feel completely normal nearly here and there I just feel a bit fuzzy but that should go away in a few months it just takes time
Delighted to hear you're doing so well! 😊😊
Hello Shaun, I’m a 15 year old suffering from DR, I started feeling this way at the age of 13 due to a bad car accident. It’s a off and on thing, some days I’ll feel excellent, and other days not so good like I’m a insane person. I need help controlling these feelings, I always watch your videos to help me realize I’m not alone and it’s a complete normal feeling.
Hey Dylan, thanks for your comment. Firstly, please make sure that you’re speaking to your parents about what’s happening. It’s very important that they know what’s going on. Secondly, I know DP can be frightening but remember that it's just your body and brain's natural response to stress and anxiety. It's not permanent and it can't hurt you. You can and will recover. Make sure to read through all the info and articles on my website at www.dpmanual.com
And if you would like to speak to a medical professional please don't hesitate to do so. I would recommend finding an anxiety specialist if possible as they will likely be more familiar with DP 👍
@@Dpmanual thank you I have been feeling better since I commented. Buy not to long ago I had another attack , but I think it’s getting better it wasn’t that same fear I had before. I had such more control, I told my parents and they aren’t really understanding what I’m going through. But I just wanted to reach out to you and all the others who are helping me through my recovery.
@@dylanarviso8340 Thanks for your comment Dylan. I'm glad to hear you're feeling better and that you've spoken to your parents too. Keep up the good work! 😊
You're going to be okay. I had this when I was 15 after smoking synthetic marijuana. I'm 26 now and it gets better. You learn how to manage it and it eventually goes away on its own. But it's important to take care of yourself and eat healthy foods as well as working out. Like I can't stress this enough, eating healthy is paramount. But you'll feel a lot better.

Glad to hear it! 😊
@@Dpmanual Quick question, have you ever experienced the feeling that DP is slowly fading away but pulsative anxious thoughts makes it come back in waves ? I mean, every time I'm in a DP crisis which can last from a day to 8 months +, symptoms are significantly different which always tricks me into thinking "Ok I'm really going insane this time". As a student I can't really afford for your manual but I know I would If I could ^^

I will go back to your channel Shaun, I will start my recovery now😊. Thank you so much I've found you in the internet. I'll be back, I'm excited to tell everybody here that I have conquered this experience.
So glad you've found the channel to be useful! 😊
I had my 3rd Dr/dp attack today. It was like my brain was on fire, like an exploding psychology. Everything felt like a profound realization, like an acid trip without the visuals. My mom was driving to the hospital and I had this extreme urge to do something that would get us both killed like turn her steering wheel, so I held onto the hand holds like I life depended on it
I didn't know who I was, everything was real and fake at the same time, but I also was able to narrate what was going on. I felt like a child and my mother was answering ally questions like I was a baby. I felt innocent, born new and the most terror I've ever experienced ever.
Hey, thanks for your comment 😊 I know DPDR can be scary but just remember that it’s a natural reaction to stress and anxiety, and people experience it all the time. The National Institute on Mental Illness estimates that up to 75% of people experience at least one depersonalization / derealization episode in their lives. It's part of your brain's natural defence mechanism and usually it only lasts a few seconds or minutes at a time. It's only when it's focused on as a separate problem (feeling like you're going crazy / in a dream etc) that it can turn into a feedback loop with the anxiety that caused it in the first place. But no matter what caused it or how long you've had it, you can always switch it off completely by stopping that anxious feedback loop. Make sure to carefully read through all the articles and info on my website at www.dpmanual.com and my book The Depersonalization Manual.
And if you would like to speak to a medical professional please don't hesitate to do so. I would recommend finding an anxiety specialist if possible as they will likely be more familiar with DPDR.

I had DP from alcohol withdrawal, I felt non stop dejavu for 2 days and i had 0 sleep .. on the 3rd day I finally cracked , i dosed of around 2am and a few minutes later I had night terrors, I woke up to myself horrified and screaming,, I felt intense paranoia that I had my mom take me to the hospital , I was so scared that I couldn’t open my eyes and I had to hold moms hand coz I couldn’t walk alone . I felt like some weird ghost/demon/creature was gonna jump out of the corners to get me .
I was given a jab of diazepam and spent the weekend in hospital.
The anxiety attacks continued for 2 years until I learned to master my mind and control my thoughts, the panic/anxiety attacks disappeared when I stopped anticipating them , and started ignoring them like they were just normal.

It wont kill you and its nothing to fear , you just have to tell yourself that you are in control and that youre not crazy , its just an effect of the alcohol/ weed
if you cant sleep , you may or may not need antidepressants / diazepam tablets , not forever but just for a month or two.
drink alot of water and listen to music . enjoy quiet time by yourself and without excess stimulation. meditate and zone out , if you feel like your gonna scream or go crazy , just let it out in a place where youre all by yourself and no ones gonna judge you.

Hi Shaun, I'm so glad to see your videos in my youtube recommendations!! My DP makes me unable to watch movies and TV shows because the themes can just be so overwhelming and somehow scary, even if they are pretty simple and basic. I'm super sad about this because I used to love movies and used to watch so many mind-bending, thought-provoking films before I got DP. I guess my question is, is this normal, and will it change?
I’m suffering from dp and yeah this happens to me and it’s normal
And it can go away
Yes absolutely, I love films like The Matrix, The Truman Show etc but couldn't watch them when I had DP as they frightened me too much! But don't worry, that fear will fade away and stop completely as your recovery continues and you can and will get back to watching any film you like with no anxiety whatsoever 😊 www.dpmanual.com/articles/back-to-normal-after-depersonalization/
I’m hungover and my dp is way worse compared to normal. I’m scared I’m gonna lose it and my anxiety is super high along with all these other feelings.

Hey Shaun you have helped me so much with my dpdr !! And understanding the condition after i bought your dp manual!! I wondered if you can help me with this (and probaly others) since i cant find a clear answer: like everything is getting better, i can socialise again, i work normally, i workout and eat healthy. But what im experiencing now is that i dont know if im normal again or this is just second phase og recovery.. i dont really know how to explain, but like instead of everything feels weird and disconnected, i only feel it a little bit, its like ive experienced this for So Long and now that feeling normal is weird and scary. I dont know if this make sense, but this is my best way to explain IT, Hope You can help. Kind regards
hey bro my dp im going through kinda the same like the thoughts and feels i get are hard to explain
Hmm...I really enjoyed your videos so far, but I slightly disagree on this one. I never drink to the point of a hangover, but almost everytime I drink alcohol it increases my derealization (even after a few sips). I get what you're saying about alcohol reducing anxiety, especially in social situations. This is what makes it so difficult for me. Going out can improve my dpdr and alcohol helps me with socializing, but it also increases dpdr :/
Same with me. Once the affects kick in I start to hyper fixate on how everything looks even more off, even with the alcohol suppressing my anxiety.
same here. Coffee is a trigger to worsen the symptoms, too. And to this day I don't understand why. Maybe I have a fear to be intoxicated or get intoxicated. Idk
I quit drinking because of this the hangover always elevated my anxiety of course I had no idea what was happening because I had no idea I was actually suffering from anxiety this way back in the 80’s and 90’s
Thanks for your comment and I hope you're feeling better today 😊
I drinked too much alcohol 4 weeks ago on Christmas night heart was racing while I was intoxicated. Woke up the next morning feeling fine didn’t have no anxiety attack or nun not even while I was intoxicated just heart was racing while wayy too drunk couple hours after sobering up I just felt like my emotions is numb it’s been 4 weeks & I feel like I lost all my feelings🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️

I would like to share my experience. I think I suffer from DP since I have memory, when i was like 7/8 I experience DP when I had very strong emotions, expetially when I felt a lump in the throat. But then my anxiety led me to question me reality and my percetion everyday. But since I experience this syndrom its like my body get used to, yeah some days are bad or very bad but its ok. Alchol helped me a lot, yeah dont overdose maybe hahah, but at some boring and very stressful dinners with family and family friends i started to drink to feel dizzly, i love that sensation but its important to know our limit, self control is key, its very difficult because when those stressful situations, or parties, or just a couple drinks with friends i love that sensation, i feel like im officially ok. sorry if I made some errors or write boring stufs hahaha but finally after discovered this channel about six month ago and a community I also finally found someone who understands me, who won't trait me like a pycho so thanks to Shaun and thanks to this community I felt understood.
Hope you all for the best

Incredible video, wow. Since 17 (I’m 26 now), I have had pretty consistent feelings of dissociation. As far as the drinking, I feel grounded, no anxiety, relaxed, and dp is virtually gone, etc. However, the next day, after having 12 beers, I am completely spaced out, unbalanced, anxious, and just completely out of it. I feel like my mind just checks out. I’ve been heavily drinking every week for years-I’m trying to cut back and drink less. I find, however, that alcohol is really the only time I feel completely “grounded.” Side note, I’m going to Europe for a week on Monday; I’m slightly nervous because I know this foreign environment will cause feelings of dp. Any thoughts?
Hey Eric, thanks for your comment and I'm very glad to hear the video was helpful. And to answer your question, I had the same fears of being in an unfamiliar place that pushed up my anxiety and DP levels too. Hey Shaun, I just want to start off by saying thank you. Truly. At the beginning of this year I suffered from DR after having a very intense migraine at work. I woke the next day feeling completely out of it, and for the next 2 months I was living in complete fear and misery. As soon as I found you on RUclips, my journey to becoming dr/dp free began. I still have a few bumps here and there and will feel out of it, but nothing compared to what I initially wen through. I think it’s just some ptsd that I am going through, finally living normally again… I did want to ask though, do you know any correlation with dp/dr linked to nicotine? I have been trying to leave off the use of nicotine for a long time now, but it’s hard. And I feel like my dp/dr kind of lingers when I use it. Im just wondering if that nicotine use might have anything to do with this linger?
Hi there, thanks for your comment and I'm very glad to hear the channel has been so useful 😊 And to answer your question, I don't imagine there'd be a strong correlation between nicotine and anxiety, but it can be a minor factor. Alcohol helps me a lot but the day after is a nightmare….hangovers with dp are terrible
Thanks for your comment Lukas, hopefully the suggestions in the video are helpful for avoiding hangovers 😊
I drank outside one day and i still have the feeling of walking frame by frame, but it usually happens when i go outside, is this alcohol affecting my brain or dpd?
Hi there, it's unlikely that that's the effects of the alcohol persisting -- It could be DPD, take a look at the list of symptoms here and see if they sound familiar: www.dpmanual.com/about/do-i-have-depersonalization-disorder/
When I was drunk I got anxiety attack and flashback from bad weed experience. My consciousness wanted to take control but I was too drunk. And when I even drink one beer i become scared automatically cause im losing control
Don't worry Kateryna, it doesn't matter what caused it or how long you've had it (or if you've been experiencing flashbacks!) you can always switch DP off completely by stopping the anxiety that's causing it 😊 Read this carefully: www.dpmanual.com/articles/back-to-normal-after-depersonalization/
@@Dpmanual I have been suffering from this maturely for 10 years, but one of my therapists said that I have it because of childhood trauma since I’m 5 (now I’m 23) and it so overwhelming and annoying already. I think like getting lost in time already and I dinky know to what I can’t stick to … questions like what is my destiny, purpose, what is reality, what is this what is that are just killing me…
Totally normal
@@katerynakozachenko4779 Not covered in this video, but alcohol can actually have mild dissociative effects DURING the drinking, which I think is felt more prominently for some people than others (as our bodies react to alcohol slightly differently which is why some people have a different 'drunken' state than others). I've had anxiety with DR in the past, and now if i drink too much alcohol then the drunk (or even just tipsy) feeling can make me feel spaced out and can mimic previous DP/DR experiences. But it still comes down to that fear of "losing control" and the obsession many DP/DR sufferers have of craving a perfectly "normal" state of mind. Because before i ever had DP/DR i would never worry about this when drinking alcohol, and nowadays during periods of lower anxiety i find that i can allow myself to drink more and not worry too much about it. So learning to be more okay with not always holding on to 100% control will solve this.
Also the philosophical questions you mention about reality i've had BIG TIME before - they actually turned in to the single worst symptom for me. Just here to say that no matter how intense those thoughts get, at some point in the future you'll look back and find it almost impossible to find them scary any longer. As Shaun says, it's all just anxiety.
Hey bro march this year I tried weed and bad a full panic attack and I was paranoid worst thing in my life then I after 2 months of feeling like I'm not real, like I was going crazy like everyone was not real I went to my doctor and she told me that I have dp so she gave me some antidepressants and some vitamins I hope this helps and I get through it I just turned 20 this year I want to recover from this thing.
Hey Viktor, thanks for your comment! 😊 I know DP can be scary but just remember that it’s a natural reaction to stress and anxiety, and people experience it all the time. What about vaping high amounts of nicotine for example 50 - 60 Nic?
It likely wouldn't have the same strength of affect as the alcohol / hangover pattern, but even still I'd refer you to this article: "Research has shown that smoking actually increases anxiety and tension. Nicotine creates an immediate sense of relaxation, so people smoke in the belief it reduces stress and anxiety. This feeling is temporary and soon gives way to withdrawal symptoms and increased cravings."

I got my worst panic attack ever a couple years ago when I was on SSRI:s and abused alcohol at the same time.
One night it just struck me out of nowhere. It literally took just seconds after that first sensation, and then it was off to the races. I completely lost grip of reality, felt completely out of my own body, didn't know who I was. I thought I had experienced bad panic attacks before, but that one was extreme. It lasted for hours upon hours.
I tried talking an ice cold shower, put my fingers in my throat and threw up over and over, prayed to God. Eventually, when nothing worked and I started looking for ways to kill myself, I just took the longest walk at around 4 am in the morning to find a gas station that sold alcohol. I got ahold of a sixpack and just downed it one beer after the other until the panic finally let go and I passed out.
I almost developed panic syndrome after that night. It was horrible.
That sounds like it was a very tough experience Christian -- But thank you for sharing it here and I hope that you're feeling better.
@@Dpmanual Yeah, it was the worst experience of my life. Never had suicidal ideation like that before. Scared the living crap out of me. I don't live with DP daily, but it always comes along with panic attacks, and that was the worst one. I felt unreal and panicky several days after it was over.

@@Dpmanual then why did i start to feel worse while i was drinking
@@Dpmanual i was drunk and depersonalized it was weird
Sorry but depersonalisation (a type of dissociation) IS actually recognised as a possible symptom of alcohol DURING the time of drinking. We would never say that depersonalisation isn't a symptom of weed or ketamine, so why alcohol. Alcohol is a type of dissociative drug, which for some people (including me) can create spaced out feelings of detachment even without being drunk. Based on Shaun's discussions on alcohol, I don't think it is a symptom for him which is great. Like any symptom of any drug it's going to vary person to person. But I've seen enough people mention this now that I do think it's a slight flaw in Shaun's work not mentioning that is a consideration for SOME people. Personally when I was trying to recover from DP I abstained from alcohol for a time since it would bring back the DP sensations, but after a while I re-introduced it once my anxiety had gone down enough and I no longer automatically interpreted any slightly detached bodily sensations with panic. Having said all of this, everything Shaun says about the effect alcohol has on DP as a consequence of the hangover and increased anxiety AFTER drinking is also all true.
