I’ve always owned a Lotus, 14 of them since 1984, and my father owned them beginning in 1969. The experience behind the wheel is the main addiction, although I have loved the way all of them looked. Problems? Sure, but as a mechanic I can work on them easily. Stay ahead of the maintenance, and be aware of each models unique quirks, and they’re fantastic cars to own. As far as handling, the most impressive car I’ve ever driven is my 1973 Lotus Europa John Player Special. The Esprit’s I’ve owned were also handled great, but the Europa doesn’t just make you feel like you’re driving an excellent drivers car, it makes you feel like you ARE the car.
I know Lotus carries a bit of a stigma in UK. Here in mainland europe, much less so (and the prices reflect that too). I've bought my Evora for the ever praised driving characteristics, but simultaneously and perhaps even unwantedly, got a "supercar treatment" by the public as well.
I don't think stigma is the right word. We know they are great looking cars with amazing handling. But they are pretty basic and with our shocking roads, not always practical.
I also love the characteristics of my Evora, such an outstanding car in so many ways compared with any mass production average vehicle. Also has been interesting getting a variety of "exotic car" reactions from the public, 99% positive.
Hi James, I bought an Evora S about 4 years ago and loving it, everything you mentioned is spot on. Thanks to your early 400 videos which helped me make my decision.
I actually had a Knight Rider car, essentially an 82 Camaro. Mine had the V6 engine, which was fine, but clearly not a monster of power and torque. It was the one thing which haunted the vehicle... it was an American mass-produced car, so the build quality was appalling, with lots of perpetual squeaks from the dash, and scuttle shake (from a coupe?) On one occasion, another car kissed my rear plastic bumper, and the entire steering wheel boss fell into my lap. When I purchased it, the seller told me it was the most suitable car in his yard for me, as an Australian, being more familiar with Euro qualities of handling. Admittedly, it was far better than a new vehicle I rented, which wasn't sure whether it wanted to oversteer or under steer, usually going through a cycle of both on general city streets. A really enjoyable channel, which I always look forward to viewing. You are preternaturally unable to disappoint.
I went from an early 996 3.4 Carrera to a 2011 Evora after watching your videos James. I love the Evora, the ride and handling are second to none, especially at this price point. Keep the videos coming, love your content.
Drove a white original car as part of an experience day in 2010. Apart from getting into the thing, which as highlighted, has a high sill and little room between the seat back and front of the door opening, what a lovely car it was to drive.
It may seem silly, but I actually enjoy the experience of getting I and out of my Evora. I feel it adds to the engaging experience of driving a unique, hand made, British exotic sports car I get to drive mostly only on the weekend.
Considering that, on the drive back from collecting it, that 720S had its front right lower wishbone simply fall out... and the McLaren dealer totally stonewalled him over it...
@@alexanderstefanov6474Yep. And they put it in everything from the Corolla to the newest Lexus LS, so parts are readily available and pretty much any mechanic can work on it.
The engine is no longer in production, lotus bought them all and are running out, hence the Emira won't be available with a v6 for much longer. @@AWMJoeyjoejoe
The Lotus Evora is still my dream car. All thanks to you Jay! And I really mean my dream car. There's just something about them. I just had to sell my 997 C2S and get an electric car (yuck), but i'll have an Evora one day!
Like you, Jay, I have been revisiting this car. My other option, is an RX-8 with a full drivetrain swap of the Chevy LFX V6 motor, transmission, and differential. Decisions, decisions...
I can't imagine the frustration of having a Lotus Evora to play with on a beautiful, sunny day and then getting stuck behind a huge group of cyclists. 😂
Throughly enjoy my Evora 410 GT Sport. It’s been 3 years of trouble free motoring and it nearly always gets a thumbs up from people. Thought about changing to a McLaren, 911 GT3 or a Ferrari 458, but the additional cost and the sheer enjoyment I get from the Lotus it’s really hard to justify.
I always found Evora rather pretty. Especially the early cars and the Evora S Club Racer. Sadly I was too poor to be in any position to buy one (as everything is expensive in Indonesia but gross income per capita is below GBP3000 per year), but I think I saw one put up for sale at the equivalent of GBP45k last year.
Hi James I've had a Caterham , Elise 111R , Evora N/A and now a Evora GT410 Sport and absolutely love it . dud have Emira on order which I cancelled after price hike and glad I did. Great vids . Mine gets used most days lives outside and just over 41k miles now.

Thank you the secret that the Evora is a brilliant sports car with you buying your yellow Evora 400 in the end. I ended up buying the 400 Hethel Edition and yes, it’s the automatic it’s brilliant.

Fwiw. I traded my 997 GT3 for a NA Evora. First test drove a beat up NA Evora when I was in a 987 Spyder; as a driving experience, bar was set in stone for me by that tester. (Didn’t buy that one because the trunk was full of water and paint was missing all over)
When you go out the door in the morning do you ever forget to put sunglasses on your head ....?. Do you look in the mirror and think hmmm I know what my look needs ... a pair of Elvis shades ON my head ...😂😅.
Oh James. Nice review BUT I said it in your last 720 video, the accumulators must need changing or something is amiss with that car. There is no way on earth it would have a harsh ride, they ride like a Bentley. So you would not have to back off for bumps and camber changes. Having owned a 430CUP and 675LT alongside each other for 3 years I can say, with some confidence, that the suspension in the mclaren is much more compliant and sophisticated than the Lotus. I did enjoy all my 4 lotus and would have another, but they seriously would not keep pace with either of the mclarens I have owned. I would even say the mclaren steering has more feel and feedback, only an Elise is better. I did drive my 430CUP 1,000 miles around Wales in a weekend and did the same in my 675LT. I remember the 675LT as sublime, close to faultless. The 430CUP had a clumsy gearchange, patchy brakes and the front end bounced, no matter how it was set up geo wise. It was not as much fun to pedal as the mclaren. Ultimately that's why I sold it and still have the mclaren.
I have no complaints of the Evora, however handling-wise it cannot hold a candle to an Elise. One is a Sports Car the other a GT. A sub 2000lb car the other 3000+. And yes, the gearbox in both are not the best. As for golf clubs I had no issue putting them on the folded down rear seats in my 930 in a regular bag. Whether you have an Elise or Evora, the 911 is all but invisible on the roads. I also have been confused for a Lamborghini. As for sound my 2ZZ-GE sounds like a Cosworth DFV on the 2nd cam with the Larini GT2 exhaust. Last note, never really wanted a Ferrari save the 512BB.
The Evora hasn't been on my list, simply because i don't like the look of them. To me they look awkward. ...but now a days, where the experience a Evora delivers is a distant memory to new car buyers, i do think it's time to reconsider.
I wish you’d include the ingress and egress and other primary interior dimensions on the various vehicles you review. There are many vehicles I’d like to have but getting in, out, seat height, and shoulder room just didn’t work when I went to see one. Each time a real disappointment. I’m 6 ft, little over 200 lbs, and wide shoulders.
Jay the McLaren comparison is silly. Just because they are British, have 2 doors and look sporty is not enough to compare then.... they are totally different propositions. Tell me a single McLaren with a manual gearbox available for instance, or one with a reliable powertrain (Toyota). Some people may end up with an Evora or Cayman because they want a sports car and can't afford a super car.... but a lot if not people are not cross shopping these cars.... they are just too different.
But they could share a similar driving experience, on account of the number of Lotus engineers having been recruited to McLaren. Less about the ownership experience, more about the way the weight shifts under braking, or the steering feel. Also, whilst the McL isn't available as a manual, the Evora was available as an automatic. Perhaps a different way of thinking is whether the brands would have retained their ethos if e.g. the 570 were rebadged the new Esprit.
I eternally have a problem with supercars and faux supercars. Apart from the roads being terrible making any decent progress highly difficult, there are the speed limits. Owner of supercar leaving traffic lights and heading into a 60mph speed limit. "Ah, great take off. Accelerating fast. Perfect change to second gear. And stop as at the speed limit, but the car makes it feel like 20mph." Owner of a crap car leaving traffic lights and heading into a 60mph speed limit. "Ah, a good take off for a change. Accelerating. Strange smell, but keep accelerating. Perfect gear change, not normal so very pleased with myself. Accelerating. Funny noise, but keep foot planted. Steering starts to wobble at forty. Change into third. Accelerating. Is that a new rattle? Accelerating then change into fourth gear. And relax as at 60mph. The car feels like it is doing 100 and you think you are just about to have Scotty say 'She canny take any more Capt'n!' " Now one of those would be fun to belt about, but the other is anodyne. Fast, but zero fun unless you want to risk your licence. Plus you also have the cornering problem. As I get ready for a corner in my car, I always have to watch the car behind. If it is a Mercedes or similar, the idiot in it thinks he can go round the corner at the same speed as me. So either I slow down to make sure he doesn't have a crash, or I guarantee his impending fate of heading into a field.
Lotus suffer from the same problem as McLaren. They look generic, like the 'supercars' in grand theft auto 3 before they had the licensing and had to make generic approximations of cars.
@EvoraGT430 I no longer own a Porsche, and have never said the m96 was a great engine, it was ok. Unfortunately Lotus have never had a truely amazing engine but they do the job. The V6 3.5 sounds ok but its abit low revving vs Porsche equivalents in the GTS/ GT4, not as smooth and revs harder to modulate, plus the supercharged ones suffer badly with heatsoack in the Exige S3s.
gateway to supercars, i know Lotus cars since 1972 and this model i drove it but didn´t want to spend more money in cars but a gateway it´s one of the best handling cars ever made and no automatic transmition , it should be like this with all brands and in the past if you asked for a automatic "supercar" they would laugh in your face, so this is a undersupercar ,do you ever read about Lotus and their achievements , i think you´re confused, poor man´s mclaren?what? i really don´t undestand the title , it´s not a renault clio or is it?there´s one with a powerfull engine.
You’re in your 30s right? You’re not old believe me! 😆 I wish I were back in my 30s. Far better than being in one’s 50s+. As for the Evora, I’m afraid it still doesn’t do it for me 🤷♂️
Maybe try watching the review of any McLarens he did. You'll understand the difference between hating *_McLaren_* and hating McLarens. He disliked the company. Not the car.
Only lotus experience I had was in mini with engine but did snap drive shafts first drive about 3 inch but after gearbox rebuild was good for 160 apparently according to gs1100 suzy lol I was at work but next night mate got banned but we didn't know police were after us ffs lol lal💜🙏💜🧙♂️
Man I know with a 1988 Civic which if provoked can out accelerate any expensive sports car. Given the light weight and up graded suspension. Said car handles well in the corners. As it is not possible to walk around with your Pollock, or mansion. Some feel the need to telegraph to strangers that they make more money than others. Which they believe makes them superior. Because everyone knows, wealthy people are the most well adjusted people on the planet.
Ooh, we’ve found someone clever everyone, come see! 😀 I’ll bet you have a very funny joke about what L.o.t.u.s stands for too! Please tell us, oh pleeeeease tell us!

The Evora hasn't been on my list, simply because i don't like the look of them. To me they look awkward. ...but now a days, where the experience a Evora delivers is a distant memory to new car buyers, i do think it's time to reconsider.
997 vf SC kit $12k installed
500hp
New engine: $20K.
My Evora S had the same passenger side issue. Can only open it from the outside. Must be a design flaw.
The early non supercharged cars look very awkward from the front
The early supercharged cars are identical at the front to the n/a cars.
@@bluegblueg so what I said is still true. The later cars looked better post facelift.
The car guy's 911.

What's a poor man's Evora ? .... I might be able to afford one of those
A used Evora, that's what I did.
@@dad_jokes_4ever226 a second generation Toyota MR2 with the same 3.5 liter Toyota V6 swapped into it.
Having trouble with the peloton?😂😂
Carlos, the initial team for the McLaren 12C was 75% ex-Lotus, so the 12C layout is almost identical to the Evora.
Sadly they’re too expensive in the US :/
I eternally have a problem with supercars and faux supercars. Apart from the roads being terrible making any decent progress highly difficult, there are the speed limits.
Owner of supercar leaving traffic lights and heading into a 60mph speed limit.
"Ah, great take off. Accelerating fast. Perfect change to second gear. And stop as at the speed limit, but the car makes it feel like 20mph."
Owner of a crap car leaving traffic lights and heading into a 60mph speed limit.
The car feels like it is doing 100 and you think you are just about to have Scotty say 'She canny take any more Capt'n!' "
Now one of those would be fun to belt about, but the other is anodyne.
Or put another way, it’s more fun to driver a slower car fast than a faster car slow.
Why do you assume supercar drivers do not have the same worries of off smells and cranky gear nobs?
Lotus suffer from the same problem as McLaren. They look generic, like the 'supercars' in grand theft auto 3 before they had the licensing and had to make generic approximations of cars.
Never, ever heard anyone refer to the Evora as a "Poor man's McLaren"
It is a great car and a large part of that due to the wonderful 3.5 Toyota v6, one of greatest engines of all time
Hardly, and it's nothing special in a sports car, and in this one it happens to be mounted far too high.
@@ahemgee9542 Oh yes, it needs to blow up/bore-score/D-chunk/wear main crank bearings or have IMS seals fail to be really good (like Porsches)?
@EvoraGT430 I no longer own a Porsche, and have never said the m96 was a great engine, it was ok.
Unfortunately Lotus have never had a truely amazing engine but they do the job. The V6 3.5 sounds ok but its abit low revving vs Porsche equivalents in the GTS/ GT4, not as smooth and revs harder to modulate, plus the supercharged ones suffer badly with heatsoack in the Exige S3s.
Lotus is awesome.
Do you agree with Harry about the new Emira? (He got rid of his.)
Accidently set the wrong 12?
OMG, 2009 was 15 years ago.
The motor is lovely but you need to fit into that tiny car!😅
4-5 K to do the clutch 😮
gateway to supercars, i know Lotus cars since 1972 and this model i drove it but didn´t want to spend more money in cars but a gateway it´s one of the best handling cars ever made and no automatic transmition , it should be like this with all brands and in the past if you asked for a automatic "supercar" they would laugh in your face, so this is a undersupercar ,do you ever read about Lotus and their achievements , i think you´re confused, poor man´s mclaren?what? i really don´t undestand the title , it´s not a renault clio or is it?there´s one with a powerfull engine.

I'll say it. How about an Evora vs. Emira bake-off
Emira is just Evora Mark 3, honestly. Search this channel.
You’re in your 30s right? You’re not old believe me! 😆 I wish I were back in my 30s. Far better than being in one’s 50s+. As for the Evora, I’m afraid it still doesn’t do it for me 🤷♂️
@@DavidDatura yeah, he's 35.

Does Jay own any Ferrari’s?? 😂😂😂👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
@@nimeshdhokia6139 has had four, two being the same model. Plus a Quattroporte with the Ferrari engine.
It looks like one of them rubbish kit cars you make from a ford sierra in 1993
How are people in the UK okay with such rubbish, narrow, pothole-filled, and unsafe roads? Even Ghana has better roads!
Why The Lotus Evora is Not Just a "Poor Man's McLaren", how can it be when you hate Mclarens?
Maybe try watching the review of any McLarens he did. You'll understand the difference between hating *_McLaren_* and hating McLarens. He disliked the company. Not the car.
So you’re telling people not to buy McLarens..? [Joking]
❤
The most kit car looking lotus ever. It looks terrible imo
i tried an evora but it was so small compared to my Boxster I couldn't do it. However my brother has 2 evoras' and 2 elises's and loves them
You can fit in up to 6' 7" tall.
Evora is definitely a gateway car for me. I had two and now have a Ferrari.
What are you smoking . 😂😂😂😂
@@eugenechiam8277 what are you talking about?
Just look up EVO Car of they Year 2009 and be schooled.
Gotta love the cyclists ruining the drive
Man I know with a 1988 Civic which if provoked can out accelerate any expensive sports car. Given the light weight and up graded suspension. Said car handles well in the corners. As it is not possible to walk around with your Pollock, or mansion. Some feel the need to telegraph to strangers that they make more money than others. Which they believe makes them superior. Because everyone knows, wealthy people are the most well adjusted people on the planet.
Very Lotus comment, well done!
Looks more like a Toyota than a Ferrari. I wonder why that is?
