Thanks, Tom. I worked on background and music this week. I'll work on camera switching next week. I really appreciate you making this video, where I can pause and replay, pause and replay, etc. 😀
The Roland VR-1HD can automatically switch cameras based on who's talking. It can also switch to a wide shot camera when both people talk or when noone is talking. Great videos, thanks.
Great video Tom as always! You mentioned your camera switching on a live stream a couple weeks ago, and that's when I decided to try it with recording my podcast, which I previously would manually change scenes between hosts using my Stream Deck. Totally easier to make multiple scenes and have them all set at different timer intervals so that it looks natural. Love that you made a video about it for all others to see!
This is a super fun technique for sure! I would love to find a way to have the scenes switch based on audio signals, but I haven't figured that out yet. Like, if an audio source reaches a certain level for a certain amount of time it cuts to that scene.
Tom, off topic - I have been printing parts for our latest RC sprint car group using the monoprice mini I won on your giveaway. Just wanted to say thanks again! Jim
I just want to apologize...I was just starting to judge you when you asked me not to. I stopped almost immediately. Almost... Great video as always. This is why I love vMix on my PC. I can create a playlist of cameras and program it to switch to cameras every 10 seconds or stay on one camera for 7 seconds and the second camera for 15 etc. It's pretty sweet! See you on the webs!
Hey Tom, incredible video! You have an extreme talent in production. I have a question; we run a podcast with 5 guys (Five's a Crowd Podcast). We currently have a decent audio mixer, the Zoom LiveTrak L-8, and will be moving into a new dedicated studio where we are hoping to run a multiple camera setup. It would be incredible to have the video automatically switch/follow the audio as we speak into our mics. I would love to run 3 cameras, and be able to make 5+ 'angles' by punching in, as you have done in this video, but is it possible to connect our existing audio mixer into something like an ATEM, and have it automatically switch between preset angles to follow who is talking? I ask that specifically because not many mixers have as many audio inputs as we require that are budget friendly. We connect our mixer to our computer and record using Adobe Audition, but I don't know if ATEM can take an audio feed directly from the mixer or indirectly via Audition in order to do this? I've also seen this specific feature on the Roland VR-1HD AV Streaming Mixer, but hoping not to spend $6500. 😬 Thank you for your help!
Thanks so much! You're asking the million dollar question- I haven't used that Roland, but aside from that I don't know of anything that currently can be used to automatically switch sources baes on audio. I've been trying to figure it out for ages and it's a really common question, so I know there's a HUGE demand for it. For now, this method is the best I've found. It's not perfect but at least it gets the job done.
@@tombuck Thank you so much for your reply, really appreciate it. Your videos are done extremely well, your quality is something to strive for! Keep on keepin' on. Excited to see what else I can learn from you.
Wow this just answered my question I asked on another of your videos. Can we still record at 4K on the main camera and use the 1080 on the other cameras?
Hi great video! I have a question, do you know how can a automatic switch camera without ecam live, what gears to buy? If u have any video you can send me the link please 🙏🏾. I see atem but it’s not automatic when people talk to the mic
All the videos of yours that I've seen are always easy to understand and funny and informative. I just have one question about this one. When you're doing all of the "switching" settings, is all of that done while you're recording or beforehand or during editing?
Your scenes should all be setup before recording/streaming, but once you start cycling through the scenes in the folder, it all happens "live," if that makes sense.
Thank you! Great video. It's not working for me. I clicked go to next scene but it doesn't switch after hitting play. It counts down and doesn't change cameras.
Sometimes I accidentally have set the next scene to be a duplicate of the current one, so the switch isn’t noticeable. Maybe it’s something like that that’s causing the problem?
Trust me, I have been doing this with my web-cams and it works and looks good so far. Never miss any of your ideal vids. Question, is it okay if I share your page on my newest video? I've mentioned that I have learned some ideas from your vids and thanks to you, you have inspired me to continue doing what I enjoy. Thanks again Tom and Heather.
Thanks Cathy! I'm happy it was helpful! I know there are a few big Ecamm updates coming soon-ish, so hopefully I can put together some more videos that you'll like 👍
Wow. This is very handy information. Cheers Tom. Quick question; I notice some RUclipsrs have animated landscapes etc behind them as they present their shows. Do you know how that’s done? Thanks mate and have a great weekend.
Heather's entire workflow is based around Ecamm, even for prerecorded videos (it can stream/record up to 4K). The cool part about that is it removes any issues of running out of card space or recording time since everything is going directly to your computer's hard drive. I know you're more of a production guy, but even that could be helpful for longer talking head shots or interviews 👍
Yes, since the interview can be added to scenes however you’d like. They also published an update this week that includes the option to create a “timed folder” without having to add a timer to each scene. 👍
Tom - How do you keep from losing all your settings when the computer is turned off? Whenever I. turn my laptop off and come back the next day and open Ecamm live, all of my settings are mixed up or blank.
Hello, Tom. I have seen many videos to config Atem with streamdeck. And all say that is necessary to use Companion for connect atem with streamdeck. But you made not that. Can I plug my atem mini pro with my streamdeck XL without companion? How? Thanks
Since I’m running everything through Ecamm that’s where my Stream Deck commands come from. If you’re not using Ecamm, you could use the Blackmagic ATEM software and create hotkeys in your Streamdeck. And of course there’s always OBS, which has a lot of compatibility with the Streamdeck.
Tom Buck, yes, I understand! But in videos, I has seen that Companion make compatibility between atem and streamdeck. I use ecamm but only with capture card elgato HD60S+. And I would like to use also Atem and streamdeck for livestream, but without companion. With companion is very hard.
I’ve read that atem only shows up as 1 source in OBS, is there a way that I could have multi cams in diff scenes using Atem+ecamm? I’d like to use stream deck to switch scenes (with diff cam angles), but I want my multi cams plugged into atem vs having my cams plugged into my aging stream pc, not enough power/pcie lanes. Buying an atem would help offload that off of the PC.
I just bought a blackmagic atem mini and a second camera. (literally have not even arrived yet) and to get this working automatically, I'll need a second atem?...
Not necessarily a second ATEM, but a second capture card of some kind. Depending on your camera, you may even be able to connect it directly via USB and have it show up as a source in Ecamm.
@@tombuck There's a way, I've just found it again, It's using the OBS Advanced Scene Switcher plugin, using the Audio feature. It's the perfect thing for this, and it's already quite a popular plugin, but this feature of it isn't talked about much/if ever.
hi Tom, every time I connect my camera to the Atem Mini for live streaming it keeps switching the cameras off, it never happens when connected straight to the Mac (Air), could it be a case of Mac poor processor (RAM)?
Hmm, I haven't really heard of anything like this before. The computer only sees the ATEM as a webcam, so it really shouldn't matter what you have connected to it (the computer doesn't know what kind of camera it is or if it's a game console, or something else).

The ATEM is only a single source for the computer, but you could check out the CamLink Pro, which is essentially 4 capture cards in one.
So.... what if I wanted to switch video files AND graphic overlays in varying timing sequences at the same time?
Each scene includes everything (graphics, timers, video, etc), so it'll work just the same.
I imagined you have an director who switches cameras, another option would be for you to move the ATEM Mini to the floor and change the cameras toes.
Oh I’ve thought about it! I’m trying to play around with MIDI pedals to do exactly that, but it’s still a work in progress.
@@tombuck Pedal might be good. Same time it could activate some LED light next to camera, so you know that this cam is active now.
Oh my gosh I would love that. I saw Blackmagic’s new studio cameras have big built in tally lights and I think it’s super cool.
Looks easy. Do you know of a way to do this in OBS?
I'm sure there is, but I don't know how. The ease of use is one of the many reasons I love Ecamm.
Couldn't it be possible to switch scene when reaching a certain audio level - I've seen a similar thing done with OBS Studio before.
