  • Ellen G White is a foundational influence on the Seventh Day Adventist movement and their theology. In this video, I will outline the life of Ellen and touch on some of the influences behind her most well-known visions and writings. This video is not designed to defend the beliefs of Ellen or Seventh Day Adventists, but I will explain some of the important parts of Ellen's work that is still fundamental to the belief system of SDA.

Ellen was born to a family of 8, which settled in Portland, Maine, shortly after her birth for job opportunities. At a young age, Ellen was struck in the head, which caused her to go into a coma for three weeks. It's debated how much this would impact the visions she would later start to have, although it's likely this did impact the mental and physical aspects of her later visions.
After her coma, her family began to turn toward Christianity, and after a conversion experience that made Ellen feel at peace, they joined the local Methodist Church. But soon after, they began to be involved with William Miller and his followers. As they grew closer to Miller, the Methodist Church began to turn their backs on them, and all of this led to Ellen feeling terrible because she thought she would be lost forever. But this changed when she was baptized again, this time as a follower of Miller. For the next couple of years, she said she was filled with joy and happiness as she waited for the coming of Jesus.
Things started to fall apart when October 22 came and went without Christ's second coming. Many people fell away from their faith, and the Millerite movement split apart. Ellen was shocked in December when she was struck with her first vision that shown a new light on October 22. In this vision, she saw the Adventist believers going up a narrow path to the New Jerusalem. In this vision, she was shown two foundational belief systems that would shape the SDA faith.
The two ideas are the Sanctuary Theory, and the Sabbath as set apart. The Sanctuary Theory combines the vision given to Hiram Edson and Ellen to show that Christ entered into the Holy of Holies on October 22 to offer up a sacrifice for humanity. The second aspect, Sabbath as set apart, combined the work of Joseph Bates in a pamphlet and the vision of Ellen, who saw the Sabbath commandment illuminated by the Holy Spirit. These two would go on to be foundational for SDA theology.
After the SDA movement began to grow, Ellen married James White and had four children, although one died as a child, and the other at 16. After they married and moved to Battle Creek, Michigan, Ellen began to produce many writings. They gained a new printing press, and with that, SGA really began to grow, and Ellen became a very well-known leader in the movement. Because she was seen as a significant leader, she produced two more major ideas, the Great Controversy and Health reforms. Both of these would be widely accepted and began to take hold in SDA theology today. It would be in 1881 that James would pass away, and Ellen would spend the rest of her life as a widow. She would go on one last long trip to Australia before she returned to Elmshaven.

Horror and the 7th add Day Adventist so-called church is the spirit of antichrist. According to 1st John 4:1-3 in fact Jehovah Witness translation of the New World Order uses this verse to say don't believe the Divine statements they take away from the Bible put in words with the word of God says you will come under a curse if you do this apparently the so-called Church in America is okay with it

The santuary doctrine where Jesus went into the most holy place in 1844 is totally incorrect and many Adventist scholars disagree with this doctrine. Hebrews 9 is a great problem for Adventists because it puts Jesus in the most holy place in ad31. The investigative judgement is an extremely works based doctrine were christians are judged by the law and unless perfection is attained the person is lost bordering on Pelagerinism
Ellen White copied 90% of here writings from other authors in the process not giving credits.
For many Adventists Ellen White is equal to scripture . One of the leaders of the White Estate has said Ellen Whites writings are equal to the writings of Paul in Authority

      @BHKM6482 3 месяца назад

Are you sure your comments are facts? Or are they just hearsay or bias?. 90% of her writings not giving credit? Are you sure about that? Or just more hearsay. Or bias. Ellen White's writings equal to Scripture? Really? Or just more hearsay or bias.
"..I found that the charges simply were not true. But I had to get that from her writings; I did not get that from either the people who said she was a plagiarist, or the people who said she was not. I simply had to read her writings and then rid my mind of the bias I had already built into it-prejudice. And, in the end, she came out quite favorably. But it took more than 300 hours of reading-including case law histories, of course... I believe that the critics have missed the boat badly by focusing upon Mrs. White’s writings, instead of focusing upon the messages in Mrs. White’s writings. The message is what is crucial. The critic reads a sentence, and receives no meaning from it-he may, and often does, even take it out of context. But read the entire message. What is the author’s intent? What is the author really saying-where the words come from is really not that important. What is the message of this? If you disregard the message, then even the Bible itself is not worth being read, in that sense of the word. There is no such thing, in law, as “plagiarism.” Literary crimes are those of either piracy or of copyright infringement. Literary theft-piracy-is not such an easy thing to prove. You cannot read someone’s writing, and find a word, a phrase, a sentence, and say, “Aha! I find it here. And he took it from an earlier writer. And here’s another one.” ...And another question the critic usually ignores is this: Was the statement that the alleged “borrower” had taken from the earlier author really original with the earlier author-or did, perhaps, he take it, consciously or otherwise, from some one still earlier?...There is no reason why Ellen White could not use the ideas of others in expressing the thoughts she wished to convey. It’s not even rational to expect someone writing on a theological subject, for example, to write in the abstract without researching what others who have gone before-or even contemporaries-have said on the subject....Ellen White used the writings of others; but in the way she used them, she made them uniquely her own, ethically, as well as legally. And, interestingly, she invariably improved that which she “selected”!..The bottom line is: What really counts is the message of Mrs. White, not merely the mechanical writings-words, clauses, sentences-of Mrs. White. Theologians, I am told, distinguish here between verbal inspiration and plenary inspiration. Too many of the critics have missed the boat altogether. And it’s too bad, too!" - Attorney Vincent L. Ramik, senior partner of Diller, Ramik, & Wight, Ltd., specialists in patent, trademark, and copyright cases, Washington, D. C.

Regarding Hebrews 9...Holiest of all. Gr. ta hagia, “the holies,” or “the holy [places]” (see on Hebrews chs. 8:2; 9:24,
25). The context makes clear that ta hagia here refers to that “greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands” (Heb. ch. 9:11), that is, the heavenly sanctuary (vs. 24, 25). True, the translators of the KJV rendered ta hagia “holiest of all.” But it does not follow that they had in mind the most holy place of the heavenly sanctuary. It is doubtful that they held any detailed views concerning that sanctuary. They apparently thought of the heavenly sanctuary, or of “heaven itself,” where Jesus went (v. 24), as the holiest place of all, corresponding to the most holy place in the earthly sanctuary. However, it should be remembered that the meaning of the passage must be decided not by an English
translation but by the Greek, with careful attention being given to grammar and syntax.
Gr. ta hagia (Hebs chs. 8:2; 9:8). After Christ had offered “his own
blood” on Calvary, and had ascended to heaven, He entered “within the veil” Hebs ch. 6:19.

@carolflower9672 Ellen White often made use of literary sources in communicating her messages.Ellen White's use of other authors was not limited to historical or geographical material, but included other subject areas as well. Research has found that she enriched her writings with choice expressions from her reading more extensively than had been known, although the amount that has been documented thus far is a small percentage (less than 2 percent) when measured against her total literary output. Because she included such selections from other authors in her writings, critics have charged Ellen White with plagiarism. But the mere use of another's language does not constitute literary theft, as noted by Attorney Vincent L. Ramik, a specialist in patent, trademark, and copyright cases. After researching about 1,000 copyright cases in American legal history, Ramik issued a 27-page legal opinion in which he concluded "Ellen White was not a plagiarist, and her works did not constitute copyright infringement/piracy." Ramik points out several factors that critics of Ellen White's writings have failed to take into account when accusing her of literary theft or deceit. 1) Her selections "stayed well within the legal boundaries of 'fair use.'" 2) "Ellen White used the writings of others; but in the way she used them, she made them uniquely her own"--adapting the selections into her own literary framework. 3) Ellen White urged her readers to get copies of some of the very books she made use of--demonstrating that she did not attempt to conceal the fact of her use of literary sources, and that she had no intention to defraud or supersede the works of any other author.

When really observing her teachings, there are some amazing things she taught. There is a small book, steps to christ which is amazing for new christians coming to Jesus. We should not fight about these things. We are suppose to test everything against the Bible. If it contrdicts the Bible, then there is an issue. Bible is first,

I think that a majority of SDA believers would agree with this sentiment. When looked at from this perspective, there are things that she spoke about that are good concepts that I would expect to hear from Christians in similar denominations spanning out of the Restoration movement. I also agree that when/if her teachings on certain things contradict what we know of Scripture, then her words should be disregarded. I think the issue comes when followers of EGW try to raise her teachings up to the level of someone similar to the Pope, someone infallible in their teachings, regardless of any seeming contradictions with Scripture.

In my opinion, the great awakenings were good at bringing in new believers, it was unfair exegesis. I almost spit out my drink when you went over the part where the Roman Catholic Church and Protestants were the enemy. I am Lutheran and that is doubly offensive.

    • @ChristianBiographies

The SDA view of the Catholic and Protestant Church is very difficult to grasp. From the very beginning, the movement was very antagonistic to other denominational movements. Their belief is that the Catholic Church corrupted the original faith and it wasn't until 1844 when Jesus offered up the final sacrifice that the SDA faith was able to get things back on track. Thanks for the comment, and I'm glad the video helped lay out the beginnings of SDA and how Ellen played a part in the belief systems.
