Great video! Although, it's not recommended to eat plant stalks or roots near roads as cat tails naturally clean the environment around them which is great but it will absorb any contaminates. If the stalk or roots taste bitter or spicy, don't eat it!
Living in Florida these are everywhere and would love to learn how to cultivate them for a sustainable food source. Loved the video and plan on trying your recipe for pancakes!
Thank you David Michael for your last video I appreciate that I happen to get you 2 new subscribers this weekend by simply asking my buddies next to me number 600 and 610 i intend to get you more thank you for all that you have given back to the universe "D"
Subscribed! I've always been amazed at the versatility of cattails, though I have never tried to do anything with them, but I am collecting all sorts of information on their uses, especially cooking. I live in central PA and these can be found growing near water and along roadsides, but thus far I've never seen them in mass quantities. That's not to say that they don't grow like that here, *I* just haven't ever seem them like that. Now after watching this video, I'm eager to try these pancakes. Thank you!!
Hi : i would like to try cattail pollen flour cake so bad, but i am allergic to any pollen, but i want to learn a bout foraging, love what you are doing👍👍.
I think you said it backwards. The top part has the male flowers which give the pollen. The bottom part is the female flowers which will eventually develop into cattail fuzzies
I did actually say it backwards and put it correctly in the captions while editing. I'm constantly looking for slip ups . I was hoping the captions I superimposed over the video would be noticable.
Pollen from male spike. The female portions can be fried and eaten much like corn . The stalk has much better flavor. Raw is best as cooking seems to diminish its sweetness
You should have said you were just making flour pancakes. I thought it was made solely from cattails, Not much sense to it if your just going to the store anyway.

I've never had pancakes with cattails but I wanna try it

I found freezing it is about the best way .
Thank you .
I've made cakes then put them in the freezer.
I'd much rather freeze the pollen . This coming season I will certainly freeze my excess.
Just seen this. I grew up shaking cattails..😊 good info.
I liked how you talked about the different edible parts. The recipe was great soundings. I will have to give it a try. Great video.

I would use lots of beaten egg whites to make a bread.
You have it backwards. Pollen is the male part.
How many cattails does it take to make a cup of flour?
At least 25-30
I’ll try this but I will probably sneeze my brains out. I’ll experiment with the roots and see if I can make starch noodles
I’ve frozen my yellow pollen. It’s high in vitamin C they say.
Thanks!
Tons of facts and you could totally do long form video i would watch it
Or if its that long just make a series of videos covering it
The roots you probably need to extract the starch with water and dehydrate it?
Very interesting video thanks
I would guess the easiest way would be to dry, then pound it or mortar it to pulverize the starch to separate from fibers with a sieve
Frezor? For storage?
Can a guy skip the wheat flour if they're allergic?
Certainly
What time of year in Lower Michigan would be best for harvesting the pollen?
From middle of May to first week of june
I thought the pollen was the male and the female was the seed ?
it is!
Do you get the pollen from both the male and female part?
Pollen from male spike.
The female portions can be fried and eaten much like corn . The stalk has much better flavor. Raw is best as cooking seems to diminish its sweetness
I see you bought a Red Green microwave. :P
I participate in his school of thought

can you do anything with the 'fuzzies' - fuzzy part?
Makes good fire starter
Good for pillow stuffing and the like also@@FoundYouForaging
