I first went to Airventure in 1978 as a newly licensed private pilot. First time was a one day fly-in, fly-out. After that started flying in and tent camping under the wing. Took my then girlfriend. Remember getting ate alive by the Wisconsin state bird that year‼️🤣🤣🤣. Fast forward several years and we were tent camping with our kids…tent collapsing in storms and all…then we upgraded to a pop-up. Boys were in scouting so they had personal hiking tents for themselves for privacy…again, baaad storms. But we survived and thrived. Now, we’ve got a travel trailer & kids are grown & on their own. Haven’t been able to attend in over 10 years as I’ve always had my recurrent training (yes, airline pilot) fall right around the show. Miss it. Just so everyone knows; the true joy and meaning of the event is NOT Boeing or Airbus or even the big general aviation manufacturers. It’s the experimental builders, antique/classic enthusiasts, light sport, ultralights, warbirds, etc. go out and meet the people that make up the EAA. THIS & these people are the heart and soul of the event.
This was my 30th year going to Oshkosh, I camp for 11 days and I still don't see everything. I stay in a small private campground on the south end of the airport between the ultralight runway and the red barn. There is nothing like Oshkosh, it's a very special place.
Plus or minus in there? Can't remember the name but it is something spelled backwards? We general area camp and just wondering. Pancake breakfast is a must as well as pirates cove!
My grandfather flew a thunderbolt P47 in WWII. He was shot down and killed in Normandy France on D-Day +17. June 24 1944. I had the great privilege to see one at an air show in NJ a few years ago. 🇺🇸🙏🏻
EAA Airventure has always been my "happy place" where I tent camped for years. After last year my wife encouraged me to get a travel trailer so we can have a more comfortable experience in Oshkosh. We recently got our trailer and have been so excited and doing research to make our lives easier. This research led us to your pages where I stumble across y'all at AirVenutre. It really is a full circle world! I hope you enjoyed the EAA community and Aviation in general we always love new people to come!
Oshkosh EEA is the best. My son is a huge airplane fan, so I got him an EEA membership and took him when he was in highschool. Several year later he is a A&P Mechanic (airplane mechanic). He has volunteered for several year there. He tent camps, dont underestimate the value of the facilities at the show. The showerhouse at the south side entrance to Camp Scholler is the BEST. Private rooms, no depleting supplies or filling grey tanks. I do have a photo from Camp Shloshkosh, where he had to camp in the receiving area and there was no place to put the camper because of the mud.
Wednesday and Saturday are the night shows. Bicycles are a big plus. All you can eat pancakes everyday. Pirates cove is a fun stop. I could go on as to all the fun and cool stuff. We have a travel trailer and use a 4.5 kw lp generator. Bought a 20 gallon ish pba free water bag and a drill pump. Enjoy Airventure more everytime we go!
Fun video! We have been going to Oshkosh for over 30 years and tent camped. Finally upgraded to a camper. We meet up with a group of friends and have an amazing time!! Hope to see you there next year!!
I went in the early 70's. Also when I was in Air Force Air traffic control school at Kessler AFB they played a tape of the fly in and said for one day each year it was the busiest airport in the world for that day. The controllers were amazing.
Enjoyed this video. Brings back many memories of Oshkosh. My first time at the fly in was in 1965 when it was held in Rockford, Illinois. Last time was in 2005, a total of 30 yrs attending. Miss it and hope to attend next year. It is the greatest show on earth. A wonderful experience for kids.
This was my first year to attend Oshkosh. I started camping in January at age 68 when I picked up a 4x8 ft squareback Tiny Camper. Had made about 6 trips with it before Oshkosh. I knew there was no power or water in the general campground at Oshkosh but I was not as prepared as I could have been. Will be better prepared next time. Awesome week long event. The night airshows are traditionally Wed and Sat nights. Be prepared to walk a lot, but its worth it. Not only was this the biggest and most attended Air Venture, of course it was the hottest/ most humid weather wise. Awesome show and friendly local people. Save a few bucks to get a flight on the Ford Tri Motor and/or a Bell 47 (MASH show). The two Tri Motors owned by EAA are meticulously maintained and well worth the price. There are showers and small grocery markets throughout the campground. There are porta potties galore that are cleaned and serviced at least daily. Come on and enjoy the biggest week in aviation in the world. Always the last week of July.
Oshkosh is fabulous. I went there as a teenager and convinced my husband to go last summer. Needless to say it has grown substantially over the years. We use our "Remove Before Flight" on our side access storage door keys on our pop up. It helps us to remember to pull the keys out when we are done using that door. Glad you were able to work through the problems and the kiddo is feeling well. PS.we have a Great Dane, we know slobber well. 😂😊
They do have generator area to park in for those that don’t have a great deal of solar available They also have a service available to have your black and gray tanks emptied and that will also provide fresh potable water The thing I wish they have but don’t, at least in 2021, was diesel delivery. We could have used that rather than leaving the campground to fill tanks
1 thing I've found with driving a tractor trailer for many years, expand your GPS to look at the next off ramp to see what it does before getting off on it
Unless you're on a generator when you solar boondock you need to make sacrifices like; no espresso makers, hairdryers, or other high-consumption consumer devices. Essentially, forget the glam in glamping.
Oh! If we knew you were going to be in Oshkosh for EAA, we would have loved to show you the hidden gems. We lived in Oshkosh most of our lives so those are our stomping grounds!
No worries regarding your mistakes and learning. That’s actually part of the adventure and, after you’ve learned the lesson, you won’t make the mistake again. Congratulations on always staying open to new adventures!!!
We promised my oldest son we’d take him to this next year so this was great to see, thank you! Also, not sure if it would work for you but we use a big water bladder, I think it’s like 20 gallons or more that we use to refill our water when boondocking.
Take your son and spend the whole week. Get there by Saturday and leave Sunday. Like they said bring bikes, scooters, one wheels or some form of ground transportation.
Watching your videos have been hit or miss this past year, so this is the first time I’ve seen one with your animals talking. I seriously almost spit my coffee all over my phone. 😂 that is such a great add to your videos. ❤
Great video.Made me laugh. I live an hour from Wittman Field. Been to EAA a couple times and always enjoyed it. I see you experienced Wisconsin's state bird. You have a nice family.
What a neat experience for your son. I was telling my husband about your motto of experiences over things and how that has to be so good for your children. So sorry you all had some not so fun things happen. Maybe if you go back someday, what you have learned will make it a better trip. I haven't been to the Oshkosh show since the 70's and it was so much smaller back then. I always wanted to fly in and camp but life happened and I never found the time. Thanks for sharing, always love following your sweet little family.
We do a few boondocking weeks each year as you just did. The more you do, the easier and the more you learn. We often will add water through the winterization process daily, just a few gallons that way ya kinda stay on top of it. We also have a trickle charger that goes between our house and chassis battery.
We enjoy watching your videos. Wish I knew you were there! We Love Oshkosh (this was our 5yr)! We usually boondock for 10days with our 7 youngest! Did you make it to any of the nightly movies or the museum area? If you are looking for cheap eats, there are good food options just outside the gate area. This year had the most campers ever! Always room to ride shuttle bus from show grnds to campgrnd. However, to catch the bus in the morning you need to be ready before 8am, especially if you are at the last pickup spots. Now that you've been to the largest airshow, you need to go to the largest steam show in the US....in MN!!
You SHOULD have an auxilliary start switch that you hold when starting to re-route power from the house battery system in the event the coach batteries are dead. Our 2001 Discovery has it..
Hmmm, when boondocking we try to look for locations where there are at a minimum porta-potties we can use. Also, we have a bucket, toilet seat cover and special bags as a Back-up solution in storage.
EAA has more portapottys than I've ever seen plus they're cleaned and service 24/7. They also have huge bathrooms and shower houses that are scattered throughout the grounds which are also cleaned regularly.
We live in Appleton, WI just north of Oshkosh (one word, named after Chief Oshkosh, a Menominee Tribal Chief). EAA is a huge draw for all of NE WI and hotels and campgrounds are booked from Green Bay to Steven's Point (an hour away)! We know people who rent our their homes every year to EAA enthusiasts. One thing I wanted to comment on in your opening video....cooking bratwursts....boil them in 50% beer/50% water and a cut up onion, then just brown 'em up on the grill or griddle. Never cut into them while cooking...that just dries them out! Put them back into the hot liquid to keep them warm and juicy...serve with a little bit of ketchup, mustard and fresh sauerkraut!
I'm glad you all had a good time. If I'd known you were there I would of come over to tell you how much I've enjoyed your videos. I've been going up to the Fly In for 50 years. I'm a Century Club member, so I was parked up near the front. AL
FYI Dead or weak engine battery, You Have a switch somewhere, that pulls electricity from the house batteries to boost the engine battery. You hold it in or on, then start the engine. I have an older Newmar and mine is on a switch below the head light switch. All diesels have them. Happy Trails.
A free place to stay, the world’s best air show, family and friends along with a little real life poop and barf that happens anytime you have kids or dogs…if that’s your “worst ever” RV experience sign me up! Looks pretty great from here.
I enjoyed the video and the fact that no matter how long you've been camping, things can just go wrong. Sometimes it's something we do or it just happens, but it's all good for a laugh later. I noticed you have the same passenger seat we have!!!! Gotta love those travel en cats.
The last time I was at Oshkosh with the motorhome there had been epic storms in the area and the fields were saturated. No ono was allowed to enter. Try to imagine all those RVs parked absolutely everywhere in the area. Parking lots full and streets lined with RVs. It was 48 hours before I could enter and I was first one to enter a field they had just opened. The 40ft motorhome and 20ft trsiler made it o ly because I was first and able to stay to the drier area even though i was leaving serious ruts. Later on several motorhomes had to be pulled out with tractors.
We get there usually the Wednesday prior and it was getting busy byFriday. When did you get there? It looks like you ended up in the gold lot. This was by far the busiest OSH we have seen in 10 years. Hope you enjoyed the rest of the show.
Ooooh I know where that truck stop is! How far west are you going? I’m just outside of Sioux Falls,SD. A wanna be FT RV’er (someday) but until then living vicariously through a few of my favorite RV RUclipsrs. Safe travels! Love your channel and look forward to the next video!
You've inspired me to try to attend next year. Enjoy following you guys all the time. Great video, my wife had to turn her head for the pooh-pyramid 🤣🤣🤣, that stuff is not my favorite thing, but really doesn't bother me like her. That's why I'm in charge of everything outside when we camp. Dead battery is never an issue with someone around, if so, get a jumper battery. Keep up the great videos. Hopefully we'll get to meet up some time. Any progress on a rally? Don from Florida
Dang it, if we knew you were going to the worlds biggest truck stop, we would up met up with you all. We might have been in AZ though… Skip the boondocking from now on ! lol
Great video and perspective as non aviation geeks. This year was more stormy and hot & humid than usual. Why not just take your RV to the RV station to get water?
@@GratefulGlamperwe bought a collapsible 20 gallon ish pba free bag. A drill powered pump and refilled our water. Almost made it without moving but our black tank was too full. Dry camping is fun. Bicycles were a big plus this year.
Battery issues, yes, never charge your mobile batteries off the chassis battery, as it can eliminate the chance to start your engine or generator. Also, your RV should have a battery switch that connects the house battery circuit with the power of your chassis battery, so you can start your engine off with support from your house batteries.
It did have the switch to use the house batteries to start the engine. However when we re-did the electrical system with the lithium set up, that particular part had to be eliminated- hence a pair of jump cables do the trick.
@@GratefulGlamper That is odd that the switch had to be eliminated. We have a Class A gas and I installed Li-Ion (LifePO4) batteries in place for the lead-acid house batteries. Only thing I changed out was the converter (don't have an inverter) for a model specifically for Li-Ion battery charging (yes, I installed a Li-Ion solar charge controller). Everything else stayed the same and the solutions works very well. So, yes, I still have the magic battery switch I can use to juice up my chassis batteries for a few seconds, so I can start the engine in an emergency. I am a Cert. Auto.-Mechanic, Engineer, and also worked in the Li-Ion (or modern battery industry), so - no- I don't think it wasn't necessary to remove this switch. The switch connects the house battery bank and chassis battery circuit for a few seconds only (that's why it is a rocker-switch) to add power and help with starting the engine. Yes, normally, you don't want to connect lead-acid and lithium battery circuits longer term (but this is only for a few .... like 10 seconds).
OSH has become very commercialized and big corporations. Sold my experimental aircraft I first flew in 2009. Been flying since 65 Everything is becoming very expensive.
"On Brand" what does that mean? In your fails you learn AND have opportunities to teach handling of adversities. Mistakes are human. With much love always.
"On brand" would mean we call ourselves the Grateful Glamper - and this was a moment where maybe we felt boondocking wasn't necessarily "glamping" LOL.
Am confused…does your rig not have the ability to start engine from house batteries? The issue we had with night shows were SKEETERS…so we watched it from the comfort of our coach front seats. No kids so comfy for the 2 of us. And learned right off..take the handicapped bus… never filled AND AIR CONDITIONED! 😎
That is a wise plan! And Great tips :) Regarding the ability to start from the house batteries. We lost that capability when putting in solar. I think I’m going to figure out a way to get that functionality back though after that experience.
@@GratefulGlamper you need an A/B switch (a transfer switch) and you can use BOTH..well not at the same time..but can choose which for the need at that time! 👍

Love Air Show. I love when they are practicing and fly over my house.
OMG!! Describing the EAA as the Air Sturgis is so good and correct. Actually EAA 2023 had a larger attendance than Sturgis 2023 which was 450,000.
That’s awesome
I went to Sturgis on my way home from EAA. Airventure is wayyyy better! Everyone at OSH are so friendly.

Monaco diesels usually have a button / switch that allows the house batteries to connect automatically with the engine batteries.

There were a lot of campers there, it was fun time. Hope you enjoyed as well
Ooooh I know where that truck stop is! How far west are you going? I’m just outside of Sioux Falls,SD. A wanna be FT RV’er (someday) but until then living vicariously through a few of my favorite RV RUclipsrs. Safe travels! Love your channel and look forward to the next video!
Thank you!
Will you also be going to the World's Largest Candy Story in Jordan MN?
Great video! Even with the hiccups
Thanks for watching
We might have been in AZ though… Skip the boondocking from now on ! lol
🤣 That would have been awesome!
Do some meet and greets in the future, that way you can meet some of of the cool people that follow your channel 👍
Your RV does not have an emergency start button that jumps house to chassis battery? If not, you should add one.
Have you shown us those water carriers before? Would like to know where you got those. Edit: I found them on Amazon. Thank you for showing that.
They were new to us and we love them! We got them from etrailer, here they are www.etrailer.com/Camping-Kitchen/GSI-Outdoors/37355450.html?etam=a0018
How do you keep you fur baby cool when you boon dock? We dont normally boon dock. When we do we have to run our ac for our fur babies.
We are able to keep our rear AC running all the time with our new Solar setup :) It keeps things very reasonable
Great video and perspective as non aviation geeks. This year was more stormy and hot & humid than usual. Why not just take your RV to the RV station to get water?
It’s a pain to close up the slides and move it in and out of the campsite
@@GratefulGlamperwe bought a collapsible 20 gallon ish pba free bag. A drill powered pump and refilled our water. Almost made it without moving but our black tank was too full. Dry camping is fun. Bicycles were a big plus this year.
Looks like fun!
It’s a lot of fun!
When you boondocked how did you keep your pets comfortable. Did you leave your generator going with the AC on?
Our solar/battery set up is large enough to run an a/c during the day.
How do you have privacy on the road for you and your husband to do?
HARBOR FREIGHT HAS A WATER PUMP 50.00 UNTILLABOR DAY 2023 HOOKS UP TO BATTERY
Looks like we need to make a trip over there!
OSH has become very commercialized and big corporations. Sold my experimental aircraft I first flew in 2009. Been flying since 65 Everything is becoming very expensive.
What are the rules there for running a generator? Do you have air conditioning at night?
We can run our A/C at night off our battery bank - but I’m the section we stayed in you can run a generator 24/7 if you want/need.
We were there too!
Husband is a small airplane pilot
Nice!
Get yourself a water from air machine, works off solar power too
Oh my
Am confused…does your rig not have the ability to start engine from house batteries?
What Dash Cam are you using?
This one: amzn.to/44paJYZ
I see the biggest mistake you made is you skipped Michigan 😢 we could have squeeze you in to our boondocker site
Maybe next time!
USAFA is the way to go for your boy
C5 Galaxy
It was the C-17 but the C-5 was there later in the week after the DreamLifter left.
Don’t you partner with digest it?
We do, not in this case even using that didn’t help if there isn’t enough water
Boondocking in Oshkosh? What then is ‘boondocking’?
You need aquatank.
Tell me more?!
🇺🇸
Can’t that coach jump itself?
It would have been able to before we retrofitted the electrical for the solar/lithium set up.
