I saw Dark Fate, and honestly it had NONE of the the tension or suspense from the first 2 movies. T2 is pretty much a masterpiece action movie.
Dark Fate was constantly treading on nostalgia to keep people interested, and it just plain failed at it. Which bums me out, because I like Makenzie Davis, Linda Hamilton and Arnold as actors.
I was really, REALLY hoping for a return of T2's Sarah Connor. That Sarah Connor felt like she could have walked into a room full of terminators and been the last one standing.

@@wjrneo2 The budget would've gone through the roof like the Irishman just to have a younger Linda from T2. Not feasible. It's decent given the odds and they should stop there. As for tension, I found the Rev-9 pretty scary in his own right, blending among humans like no Terminator before and tracking his prey insanely fast. Mackenzie Grace and Natalia Reyes
should've been given more to work with, sadly.

@@asch7906 You mis-understand me. I'm not talking about de-aging Linda Hamilton.
I'm talking about the characters attitude and force of will. The rage and fear that drove Sarah. Both T2 and T4's Sarah would have walked into a room full of terminators if it meant killing them. But the difference is T2's Sarah would have done it despite the fear. T4's Sarah sums up the blasé attitude on the bridge scene when she replies "I'll be back." without any real emotion.
You can see the Sarah Connor I'm talking about in the beginning of them movie when they play the T2 clip from the metal hospital.
The Rev-9 sucks. Its not terrifying in the least. Sure it blended into human society, but so did the T1000. Except, the T1000 was psychological. In the metal forge it stabs her in the shoulder to torture her to call for John.
This movie lacked any sort of suspense or thrill.

Terminator is a good franchise, yeah but it's outdated. Arnold is way too old for the whole "Terminator" type of thing. IF there is gonna be a next Terminator movie it should be "Terminator: Battle of the Elderly" or something along those lines.
Cameron should rather focus on a bright future with Alita Battle Angel sequels; Fans, us, the Alita Army OBVIOUSLY LOVED the movie and the universe he co-created so I'm just praying that he uses the release of Avatar 2 to promote his first Alita sequel.

Doc Ido I have a feeling that those who attacked Cameron for critizing Wonder Woman - not that they did not do it earlier - are dancing with joy over how Dark Fate turns out at the box office. I am sure that Cameron feels like the architect who designed a good building, but the builders decided to mess up his plans and built something nowhere like how it's intended, and the architect still gets blamed for a sub-standard building nonetheless.
That said, somehow I feel that the Terminator story inherently does not offer adequate creative headroom to expand very far: the later installments were like giving the IP another squeeze in the hope of getting a full cup. My fear is that Avatar might fall into the same situation and would run out of steam much sooner than Cameron hoped.
Alita is different though, because the story's expansive universe has already been established by Kishiro and proved to work.

I agree after looking into stories of Tim Miller and seeing how there was backlash in the studio, Cameron can not be the one to blame for TDF Box Office results, my finger is pointed at Tim Miller, Cameron probably would have gave the movie an extra 40 min to develop characters better and give better explanations to things, I mean if he was directing this it would have made its money back already regardless of the way they handled John, I think Sarah would have been Dani’s main protector, and then if something bad happened to Sarah then Grace steps in, idk I just feel like Jim could have made a better movie if he was sitting in the Director chair, I still think he should have kept the REV-9 and it’s abilities

Terminator 1 & 2 is probably my favorite double feature ever. The 1st one was a completely new take on the horror genre and was legit terrifying. Arnold was an unstoppable force and I believed it as a viewer. Terminator 2 was like the Matrix before the Matrix. Groundbreaking. Better CGI than 2019 movies to go with a great plot. Hamilton was so badass in 2, but she didn't magically get that way with no backstory like you see in this new terminator. Terrible villain, dumb way to shoe horn in women to be the new protector and savior, total rip off of the 2nd films plot, ohhhh yea, and they totally ruined and made the first two films nonsensical by killing John. Cameron isn't tweeting because of that and only that. Miller fucked the entire canon and made the first two essentially worthless now that John is a meaningless character. Excellent video, Doctor! It's great how the petition has been shooting up so rapidly. Do you have any idea what caused it? A few posts on the Alita reddit site said that up until a week ago, the Alita petition was known primarily in the United States, but that last week someone posted to a website where many Europeans visit. Another poster mentioned that a few people paid large sums to Change.org - one person contributed $500 - and that Change.org then publicized the Alita petition, causing the increase.
Also, I saw Terminator Dark Fate and enjoyed it. I rate it an A. SPOILER ALERT: Yes, it's sad that John Connor was killed in the first five minutes. I wish they hadn't done that. However, the movie had great action, and great special effects, and it kept moving. And it also had some good themes and memorable quotes. In Terminator 2, Arnold was a T-800 who was programmed to protect John Connor. One of the themes of that movie was the Terminator's efforts to try to become human. John Connor kept telling the T-800 that it was wrong to kill, and the T-800 tried to go against his nature and not kill. Sarah Connor noted how the T-800 was a better father to John Connor - always there with him, totally dedicated to helping him and protecting him - than John Connor's real father. Sarah noted how odd it was that a killer cyborg was a better father than John's human father. And at the end the T-800 told John that he was starting to understand what it means to be human. Sarah Connor ended the movie by noting that if a killer cyborg could learn not to kill, maybe humans could learn not to kill. That was a good point.
In Dark Fate, another T-800 kills John Connor, but then he looks for a purpose, and finds a mother and son to adopt as his family. In the movie, "Carl" tells Sarah Connor that by taking care of his adopted family, he started to develop a conscience and learned to care about his family. Because of his newly formed conscience, he felt guilt over having killed John Connor, and so he used his computer skills to send text messages to Sarah Connor telling her where and when other terminators were arriving so that she could kill them, which she did. This is a case of a terminator developing a conscience and trying to atone for his sins. Carl sought redemption, and he told Sarah that he would help her to protect Dani. Sarah told Carl that she would go along with this plan, but that after Dani was safe, she was going to kill Carl. Carl replied, "I understand", meaning he felt that he deserved to be killed by Sarah for having murdered her son. Sarah also said that she would never call him "Carl", since that would imply he was a human.
One memorable point was when Carl said good-bye to his family. Grace asked Carl what he said, because his family was visibly upset. Carl told her, "I told my family that the day I warned them about had finally come. The past had caught up with me, and that I won't be back." Yes, Carl's line in this movie was "I won't be back."
Later in the movie, Sarah and Carl are constantly fighting the Rev-9 and helping each other. Near the end, when the Rev-9 was about to kill Dani, and Carl had been temporarily knocked out, Sarah yelled "Carl, wake up! You've got to help Dani!" The implication was that by calling him by his name, she had somewhat forgiven Carl. Sarah started to realize that Carl had been programmed to kill John, and he didn't have a conscience, and you don't blame machines for their behavior. But more than that, Sarah realized that Carl was trying to atone for his sins, by raising a human family and by helping to protect Dani. So another lesson of the movie was that Sarah learned to forgive her son's killer. And forgiveness is an important lesson.
In summary, Terminator Dark Fate was a good film and is a worthy successor to T-2. Apparently, Terminator fans are upset about John Connor's death, but that death was an integral part of the story, leading to redemption for Carl and a lesson in forgiveness for Sarah Connor. And those are worthwhile lessons.

Ive been wondering, since Terminator Dark Fate’s poor performance helps an Alita sequel, does that mean an Avatar 2 bomb also helps an Alita sequel?
On one hand, if Avatar 2 bombed, James Cameron could put more effort on a different project like Alita that could generate more revenue. On the other hand, Disney might not greenlight sequel projects of James Cameron since his Avatar sequel bombed. Thoughts?

Alita did okay in the box office, and Terminator DF is projected to bomb. Looking at the returns of these two movies, I'm more concerned that it might discourage him from releasing new film/Alita sequel. What if he decides to stick only to Avatar because it's the "safest" route?

Another great update Doc - thanks! I did see Dark fate and, while not the worst in the series, it was really struggling to do anything fresh for the franchise. I DO get the feeling Cameron had real problems with many aspects of this film - and it shows. Alita, in utter contrast, appears to have been a very smooth and pleasurable experience with Robert Rodriquez totally on board with the vision Cameron had! As for the petition, this is GREAT news and I wonder if the sudden burst of signatures recently is something to do with many brand new fans of Alita having seen it on DVD/BR?? This is all so positive - I really do hope that we get some news about the Sequel soon.

Instead they go for wokeness and regurgitation.

James must have just been credited as a producer of Dark Fate in an attempt to get asses in seats. Sounds like he didn't have as much creative control as he usually has. The studio was just using his name without allowing the man himself to do what he does best. I firmly believe that Dark Fate could have been a good movie if the studio had given James full creative control. It's typical of Hollywood to pretend they know a franchise better than the guy who created it and then fuck it up.

Dark Fate has split distribution between Fox/Disney and Paramount. Fox released it first in Europe and they saw it giving it bad reviews. When Paramount finally got to release it, no one saw it because of the reviews from Europe. Fox also take that cut. So the main money that came in for that first week from Europe, Paramount don't even get. It is doing a lot worse than people realize. It needs to make around $500 mill to even see some slight profit

This deals with Time Travel which can make things for the fans a bit insulting especially if the new character isn't as iconic.

The previous Terminator reboots were okay, but it becomes disheartening when they keep rebooting it. Alita has the advantage of being rooted in something other than just movies. I think Terminator lost direction, because it was just movies rather than movies based on something else. The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings movies didn't change direction like this, because they were based on well-known works with a huge fan base. Although the Alita movie departed more from its source material, it still has the same kind of thing going for it, and this will hopefully keep Alita sequels from losing focus like the Terminator sequels have.
