its kind of sad to see how it started as people having fun and uploading funny videos to now where if you don't have 24 frames for second and don't have a high quality animation then people will most likely make a rant video about you and call you cancer. its a shame
So true! Cringe comps usually take much less a long than making an animation meme. All you basically do is watch vids and criticize it. A lot of people say they are “helping” people be better but it just puts pressure on people since you’re still calling it cringe and criticizing. Some things I don’t upload since I’m too scared that it will get in a cringe comp.
Yea, but i think that was caused by the community wanting to prove that they can do better and be less cringy, as well as animators just improving in what they did, which led to better quality memes. That set higher standards for the community as a whole.
Wait... so are you telling me that the first people to make animation memes were also warrior cats animators? Warrior cats is a huge part of animation history, dang
Because this video contains several inaccuracies and leaves out anything from the animation communities on websites other than youtube, such as Newgrounds or Nico Nico Douga.

This video focuses solely on the animation meme history on RUclips, but I think that is a very unsatisfactory searching method. The Leek Spin, the Caramell Dancing and the Paffendorf memes all stem from Japanese memes that were popular in Japanese sites. Look up NicoNico Douga (Japanese RUclips basically) memes, especially those from the 2000’s to early 2010’s (quite a lot of them made it to RUclips), they all bear the same principles with early animation memes. In fact, many of the older animation memes like Get Down and Caipirinha originated from NicoNico. I believe this is the actual origin story of the western animation memes on RUclips.

It is so weird going back. I 'joined' RUclips around 2010, and I remember finding these mostly Ms paint animations. Some I never watched of course, but I did follow about all these animators as a kid! It was thanks to them that I ever got into art and animation, the ones that marked me more being Bluekyokitty, Kay and flightfootwarrior (Corvid Katana), who I still follow to this day, more than the first two. It sounds surreal that, without realizing it, I was in the middle of something that eventually would get big over the years. It would be cool to have a 'history of MAPs' and 'history of PMVs', since those three communities were quite close thanks to their furry connection, although I have the feeling warrior cats started the first (or both, for all I know), but I could be wrong. Thank you for this well researched video! I had been wondering myself for a while about it, along with MAPs and PMVs, both of which I feel influenced the animation/art community greatly as well. This was great to watch, keep up the amazing work! (Including that awesome drawing!)

Also look at the Old animation meme channels that had terrible quality animations but now have improved dramatically over the years. so just calm down its not the end of the universe.
This is really complete and well explained! I am a lover of the history behind these cultures too and this video seems to cover almost everything! Almost because I feel like a valid thing to have mentioned was how for a while doing FULL AMV """memes""" were a popular thing people did! They weren't really labeled as "memes" but really had the same pattern in which there is a sequence of things to animate to a song and people would do the same thing but with their characters, it wasn't considered copying as long as you did it with your own style and characters so I think it could be classified as something that contributed to the popularity of animation memes as a Concept (making your own version of something). I also believe it would be very useful to mention the influence of Anime Music Videos and stuff back then, a lot of animation memes "de Gozaimasu" for example would be inspired by edits of anime bits with a song to go along, because not everyone had that many editing skills to remake the edits in a way that was loyal to the original they would resort to drawing Over the edit with the anime/video game/vocaloid characters they wanted! I think this and many other reasons is why the animation community shares many similar roots to the editor one and I think it would have been nice if you had explored where we parted separate ways and where we connect again sometimes (another valid example the "When I'm___" meme or the "Barbara Streisand" one, there are many little "memes" out there not started by the animation community!) but I guess that would be stuff for another video now! This one is still pretty great tho!
I became a lurker in the animation meme community in 2011. I think 2011 is also the time Flipnote Hatena creators started to share animation memes on there and I’m sure that must have gained traction to animation memes on RUclips as well. Especially since for example Shinyeevee has a RUclips account on which he shared his Flipnotes as well. I think you should have also credited Shinyeevee for animation memes becoming more popular. Also I don’t think Splashkittyartist got as much credit as she should, at least more credit than just a 3 second glimpse. As a veteran in the animation meme community I can tell you both contributed to animation memes becoming actually popular. Aside from that, great video!
And while this was happening, i was listening to stuff like shawn wasabi’s hotto doggu, marble soda, pusher meme etc., bubble tea, meme mashups, edgy amvs, mlp, and kittydog.
Well hunny when a song and an animation love each other very much they sinc up the vocals, music and the animation they make a little baby meme, With lots of love and editing they make it a big meme and post it on youtube.
I'm just discovering this video now, but I lit up when you mentioned DarKokiri!! Being particularly obsessed with Warrior Cats back in the day, I lived for her content, and it really inspired me to start drawing more. Awesome work on this video!
logged into my old account just to comment on here, but i used to post animations around 2010 armed with a mouse, ms paint, and windows movie maker.. so so happy to see lots of videos n animators i remember, & the effort you put into this!! :'3 greetings from 2010-era youtube
ive fallen out of animation, but those animation memes back in 2010 were my childhood!! my passion for animation as a medium and digital art in general was definitely boosted through those simple 4 frame loops lol. we used to idolize those crude ms paint furry animations, its amazing to see how much the community has evolved since!
As someone who lived and created animation memelets on youtube in 2008 this video was a giant nostalgia slap. I cant believe this is unknown information ;; I'm so old
Ahh yes I can still feel the touchpad under my smol hands drawing 3 fps cats with square heads in MS paint while windows movie maker crashes in the background 🙏💦💦 tbh that was the highlight of my life 👀💦
This video was actually really interesting and it was probably the first time I have watched through a 17 minute video without getting really bored and closing out of the video. You had a nice way to explain what the video was about and you were very good at staying on topic in my opinion.. this also really helped me out because I have been actually trying to find the first animation memes without using google and I usually don't watch through videos where people talk about 1 animation meme for 10+ minutes. Also I am definitely subscribing because your art is absolutely beautiful!!
Jeez.. that was my preteenhood flashing before my eyes... kay2036, hinauchi, caramelcat123, Bani, spottedfire25, dark kokiri, bluekyokitty, I cant remember all of them but man i would watch their videos over and over... You're right though, the animation memes back then were an entirely different type of humor and style. No one cared how good or bad it was animated. Today's memes are amazing and beautifully done, but it seems like a bit of a competition to see who can produce the most creative/best animated/most popular one. It's fascinating to see how that culture evolved. Thanks for doing this!
this is so amazing even though i'm watching this 5 years later, i wouldn't have thought the og animation would be caramelldansen (Edit: as a fellow warrior cat's fan i was surprised that the og animation meme animator was as well)
I think the animation meme that first caught my attention (not including Caramell Dansen, of course) was the Pompufillis meme. I dont know why that had such a big impact for me, but I distinctly remember trying to do that meme way back and failing- hard. Man, was your video just a punch to the face of nostalgia :P
Oh geez. Does that means that me doing memes is some kind of subconscious nostalgia? I swear this videos was a nostalgia ride xD I actually wanted to make the caramelle dance when I was like 11. I feel so old now :'D Thanks for this video!
I find this work of yours very impressive! I've always loved falling into vortexes of research, and to do it on something I've always been quite interested in, too? I highly respect you! I look forward to seeing content like this in the future!

Guess what..
*I was born in 2007 and never knew animation memes were a thing till 2017*

THE FIRST ANIMATION MEME WAS MADE WHEN I TURNED 1!!!!! OMG IM SO HAPPY!!
You should be a detective. You remind me of the accountant.
Aside from that, great video!
nice to know the history of a community that i love interacting with
I was BORN in 2008. Dang, animation memes are older than me!
I’m born when asdf was created and a year before animation memes actually were created to be popular
Wow I’m older than a animation meme
Can we take a moment to appreciate the amazingly shaded drawing she was making now that is just a amazing
Animation memes being childhood phases is just amazing but I've seen a lot I wasn't supposed to see
And while this was happening, i was listening to stuff like shawn wasabi’s hotto doggu, marble soda, pusher meme etc., bubble tea, meme mashups, edgy amvs, mlp, and kittydog.
Well hunny when a song and an animation love each other very much they sinc up the vocals, music and the animation they make a little baby meme, With lots of love and editing they make it a big meme and post it on youtube.
OMG ANIMATION MEMES STARTED THE YEAR I WAS BORN :OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
It started the year before I was born I'm so glad I'm in the community now :p
....
I wasn't even born/alive when the first animation meme was uploaded

I'm just discovering this video now, but I lit up when you mentioned DarKokiri!! Being particularly obsessed with Warrior Cats back in the day, I lived for her content, and it really inspired me to start drawing more. Awesome work on this video!
logged into my old account just to comment on here, but i used to post animations around 2010 armed with a mouse, ms paint, and windows movie maker.. so so happy to see lots of videos n animators i remember, & the effort you put into this!! :'3 greetings from 2010-era youtube
Vocaloid and Nico Nico Douga have played a big part in animation memes though

ive fallen out of animation, but those animation memes back in 2010 were my childhood!! my passion for animation as a medium and digital art in general was definitely boosted through those simple 4 frame loops lol. we used to idolize those crude ms paint furry animations, its amazing to see how much the community has evolved since!
As someone who lived and created animation memelets on youtube in 2008 this video was a giant nostalgia slap. I cant believe this is unknown information ;; I'm so old
"I was just sitting in my corner doing LPS videos at the time."
Me tho XD
I love hearing the story of this community, specially seeing how it have evolved with time,Great video!
*_level 3 animation meme is evolving_*
Finally! a useful video!
this gives me Vietnam flashbacks to flip note
they're reaching the boundaries of the definition of meme, because they're so different from "traditional" memes
I feel like flipnote hatena was super important in these type animations too! Also loved this vid and how well done it is, glad I found it :)

this is so amazing even though i'm watching this 5 years later, i wouldn't have thought the og animation would be caramelldansen
(Edit: as a fellow warrior cat's fan i was surprised that the og animation meme animator was as well)
I think the animation meme that first caught my attention (not including Caramell Dansen, of course) was the Pompufillis meme. I dont know why that had such a big impact for me, but I distinctly remember trying to do that meme way back and failing- hard.
Man, was your video just a punch to the face of nostalgia :P
Is it just me or do you sound like Jaiden Animations..?-
(This isn’t a hate comment, please don’t get me wrong-)
I thought that when she said “Memery, I love that word.”
OH GOD!!! IT DOES SOUND LIKE HER A BIT
Omg yeah
DarkKokiri is back! They’re safe and alive
**stalks you** xD
Oh geez. Does that means that me doing memes is some kind of subconscious nostalgia? I swear this videos was a nostalgia ride xD
I actually wanted to make the caramelle dance when I was like 11. I feel so old now :'D
Thanks for this video!
I find this work of yours very impressive! I've always loved falling into vortexes of research, and to do it on something I've always been quite interested in, too? I highly respect you! I look forward to seeing content like this in the future!
