Never thought about dye-based NDT for welds. I learned a lot. Thanks!
When doing a PT inspection you need to apply more penetrant than you did in your video. Penetrant must extend past the grain boundary of the heat affected zone and not just be applied around the weld to have the ability to detect HAZ cracking from improper heat control
ROFLMAO.......So you'd bet the cameraman's paycheck, huh? lolol. Excellent video, Bob. I think you are the only welding channel to show actual weld testing procedures and their results. THANK YOU !
please keep it up with these NDT videos, great work
Titanium grain structure is really cool if you can see it up really close. 👍🏼
Keep up the highly informed videos guys
Great and very informative video, Bob. Thanks.
Was wondering when someone in the know was going to start showing videos of xray and proper structural welding procedures with testing and proof your on the right track with pen dye. I did all this welding structural steel and rail bridge flanges and webs together 20 years ago. Nobody else on youtube is showing this type of detail to this work so anybody watching that hasnt done this before should pay attention.
austingtir Thanks for the feedback and support.
Very interesting, thanks
Bob great video. I was never aware of these methods of testing' really good stuff just came across your channel very nice and helpfull videos you guys have thanks a ton!
- Dan
Glad to help, Dan. Welcome and thanks for the support 💪
I hope you show mag particle next.
great video,, thanks i learned alot
Very insightful
Great video. I like to try using those NDT techniques when I do my welds.
A friendly suggestion: when using solvents wear gloves. Human skin is not impermeable.
seria bueno que dieras clases de doble fusión , con proceso tig
If I have a welder grind out what could potentially be an indication, would I need to reapply penetrant and allow it to dwell again or could I just respray it with developer?
Is there a video explaining why the CertiFlat welding table is tacked up the way you have it?
No video. I tacked it together like that because I felt like it would be plenty stout that way. I was correct.
Good video, do the next step mag flux.
That red line on top of the titanium weld is there because of gravity and lack of cleaning. If you flipped it over and re did the test it would still show up on the top of the weld
it must be a horibl-zonal weld procedure
How harmful are penetrant dyes if accidentally contact with skin ?
Bob, did you just very obviously adjust your junk at the beginning of this vid? LOL!!!
🤣🤣
Thanks for sharing; I use in my PT and MT Class. I also have videos and CWI info on my channel
very cool … thanks for the video..
I will add though im surprised you didnt show the dye test on something like a piece of 20mm V preped welded on one side and arc gouge out the other side, v grind, dye pen and weld back up with xray. This was our procedure here in NZ for basic 4711 coded welding. Or stainless steel milk tanker dairy welding where its used on sanded joints to show defects/pinholes.
I also think the use of dye pen to show what I might call possible cold roll from incorrect settings/to big a weld is probably not the best you should use the magnetic dye test for this as mentioned by the tech at the end of the vid. Interesting.
Hey bob what was that video called where you were making little log cabins and trees out of some sort of brazing rod. I can't find it. Father's Day coming up need to make something!
Jaded Mess83 Oh man that was awhile back. Not sure what it was titled but look for brazing.
+Bob Moffatt I tried that, couldn't find it. Started thinking I might have dreamt the whole thing up. Never had seen that done before. At least I know it real now! Thanks bob
Jaded
AST M E 165 or other standards are there ? What about others
I love this channel, guys you’re amazing
Magnetic particle can not be done on titanium as it is a non-ferrous metal. Would need to do UT if you wanted to further inspect that weld.
Maybe a how to weld gold video? Would b3 cool to see.
Good to see some of the procedures that keeps welders honest. Just a couple of comments, there is NO evaporation in the developing stage its capillary action of the developer NOT evaporation. Second comment is cleanup is CRITICAL, the solvent during clean up must not be fluid on the test piece and is to be applied as per your technician in this case by a moistened lint free cloth but it must be thorough with no visible red evident with particular attention to the weld toe. Slag and spatter to be removed where possible. In my view the HAZ has been covered a little difficult to see but looks wide enough to me. I'll give your tech 7/10 from an ASNT level 3 and huge experience over many years. He would have got 8 but that water pressure was to high to close. Do that on very thin stainless steel bellows and you would miss indications. Now he is down to 6/10 unless i'm mistaken isn't that fluoro test plate titanium? then your mag particle isn't going to tell you much! I can't help myself BUT x ray is NOT the ideal method for crack detection as cracks are in general planar and unless the orientation of the beam is by good fortune looking down the crack you most likely will not see it. Dye pen and mag particle for surface and near surface discontinuities, x ray for volume defects and planar defects with careful orientation
I once did not think. and did bottom up spray to clean nozzle. with it on a white floor. what a mess!!!!
Very good...... even if it is like watching paint dry! lol
Is it Ok to clean the red dye with water?
If if hydrophilic ... yes
What about using infrared testing before you move to X-Ray?
On the titanium piece, it just looks like twisted tuft wire wheel marks.
You can mag-flux Titanium?
Bill De La Vega if you isn't magnetic no you can not. he could try a more sensitive dye though
Only ferrous metal can be used in mag particle, not sure why he said to run it through MT since Ti is nonferrous.
What lvl NDT is this guy... that sounded like a rookie mistake.
I have dreams of study this course but I don't have condition for payment
@9:22 I thought my phone died 😂
That's like my welds. Not pretty but they are structurally sound and fused. Haha
My welds would be bloody mary all over.
Briiiiiiliant!!!
volume really low on this vid or just me?
Except for when he dropped that test piece!
x ray prob show a boat wake
As if you got Lucas Hedges to star in this video!
Cameraman: "Oh no! You bet your OWN paycheck buddy!"
You had that flourescent green screen shot and you chose the red dye for the thumbnail? Who's running this circus over there!?
90% of the video was talking about the "Red Dye". Why would they put a thumbnail of the fluorescent? That's called click bait my friend.
If that’s titanium it is nonferrous and therefore won’t work in mag particle.
If you can mark these indications with correct names, it will be perfect
MT on titanium 🤔🤫
I'm looking for partners here I have several clients but I'm looking for an NDT training company to be part of my company here in Angola 🇦🇴
before you can apply the penetrant you have to clean the part or weld with the cleaner 3 step process!!!!!!!!!!!!!
you do NOT want to re wet it 💀
Actually with PT for indicating defects you just point out if is a linear indication or a non linear indication. No lack of fusion no cracks nothing in your report you will write non linear indication or linear indication
why would you invest in such complicated testing rather than investing in a automatic cnc welding machine with zero tolerance ?
What???
Boring
