to me it looks like the Lake of Rot, and possibly glintstone mining, caused a sort of sink hole situation and large swaths of Liurnia sank down to the level of a nearby lake or other water outlet, it really is a wonderful point of connection

Its gonna be a giant sinkhole lake filled with rot surrounding the academy, that'd actually be pretty cool to see

Looking up from the Lake of Rot and seeing the sky would be such a cool sight

I do think that the Lake of Rot is responsible for the presence of Glintstone in Liurnia. Real life-crystals form in hydrothermal places often near hot underground water. This means that it was the Scarlet Rot caving in the land (we can see the landforms around the lake are sinking and crooked) that is responsible for the Glintstone by which the academy harnesses its magic. Likewise, the fog in Liurnia is not fog at all - it's steam. Water vapor forming from the rot beneath.

With the lake of rot being so close to Astel it make you wonder if there is some connection
Was Astel being pursued by some agent of the outer god of rot when they both arrived in the same place?
Liurnia is definitely sinking. Its pretty clear that the old roads were at a higher level originally. Most likely you could have walked from Manus Celes to Raya Lucaria before the collapse

I have a slightly different take on the flooding theory:
Liurnia was flooded at one point. It isn't so much still being flooded as they flooded waters are just around. The submerged stone pathing should indicate that places that didn't use to have water. In terms of the flooding waters' source, I offer it is the Ruin Strewn Precipice. Just above the Precipice is a lake and within the "dungeon" of the Precipice we see signs that at one point water was moving through there.
I think during the Shattering damage was caused to the landscape that caused a breach making the Altus lake flood into Liurnia via what would later be called the Ruin Strewn Precipice. Liurnia may have had a lake in the past but that lake was likely smaller and occupied the northern low lands of Liurnia. I theorize this based on the map. In various spots where there is water we can see trees, trees I argue that were there before the water. However, the northern parts of the flooded area of Liurnia lack for these trees, which indicates to me, this was where the water was suppose to be.
Based on the damage to the former town/city that surrounded Raya Lucaria we can see damage not rooted in sinking in areas like the Temple Quarter and the now Rose Church. The flood waters from the north smashed the Temple Quarter and Church while the Gate Town was largely shielded by Raya Lucaria's mountain. When the waters settled it didn't have anywhere to drain so its continued presence has softened the ground where the town is causing them to sink into the newly made bog.
    Lake of Rot Rebuttal:
The Lake of Rot below doesn't seem to erode stone, Elden John's statues have been there the whole time. Not to mention the stonewall the Nox have between them and the Lake of Rot. Mold grows on top of it but does not seem to eat away at it. If the Lake of Rot is eroding the stone above it the surface wouldn't be slowly sinking. Rather the lake of Rot's dome would get thin and brittle and sinkholes would form swallowing buildings down to the lake of rot all at once. It also doesn't account for the water. Though it is called Liurnia of the Lakes now it wasn't always. Liurnia's description is a land of misty forests but is now being swallowed by a lake so the water is new. I'd also argue there are a couple hundred feet of rock and stone between the dome of the lake of rot and the ground in Liurnia.

These are all good points, I hadnt taken into account the tress and how they indicate how Liurnia might have looked in the past. Another theory in support of flooding, though boring, is since Liurnia is a rainy location it couldve just, rained alot and caused the once lakes to slowly flood the surroundings.
There is no concrete evidence of the Lake of Rot expanding upwards, so the flooding softening the ground instead is a good theory 🧡

@@Endie05 I do theorize the lake of rot will be an indirect problem for the Academy. My logic is because Crystalians can be inflicted with rot that it may mean rot can in general infect crystals. So the crystals above the lake of rot are likely tainted. The infection may spread among the crystals embedded in the ground/wall/ceiling. At some point Raya Lucaria is gonna dig up Scarlet Rot infected glinstone which will likely start an pandemic in Liurnia. But that could be hundreds or thousands of years off depending on Raya Lucaria's glintstone thirst. I theorize they will hit tainted glintstone long before they get down to the lake and one way or another that's gonna stop them from reaching the Lake of Rot.
