Good stuff. I was annoyed when i warranties some wheels after the shop scratched every lug nut hole…. A different store mounted the replacement set and still scratched every lug nut hole less severely. I wonder why shops don’t already use these types of sockets by default… see you wheels for thousands of dollars and proceed to scratch them on first mounting. The manager said that manufacturers avoid this factory by wrapping wheels in plastic and using robots with laser guidance for zero scratches

Yea I agree, especially since most shops take off the lug nuts like they are in a Nascar pit crew. The rims today cost way too much money for some careless mechanic to scratch them all up.

Im a huge gearwrench fan and used them when I worked at a dealer. I had issues with super tight lug bolts and thought my impact was just too weak so I used a breaker bar until one day I tried a regular 17 impact socket and it was able to remove it. I’m guessing they just don’t hit as hard due to mass. From then on I just started wrapping a regular socket in electrical tape to protect the rim

Thats a good idea to wrap the socket with electrical tape!

All the tools in that shop.... I'm sure you have a set of calipers in there somewhere. Outside diameter data for comparison against standard impact sockets would have been helpful 😁

Thanks for the feedback. You're right, instead of just talking about the size differences and showing pictures I probably should have also included the actual sizes. I went out this morning and measured all of them. All measurements are in mm and compared to my regular Gearwrench 1/2 impact sockets (amzn.to/3YvwJC4). Hope this helps.

@@TeamDIYNow This is the best reply to a tongue-in-cheek, borderline snarky comment. Thanks for this great info. You've earned a sub, my dude.

I think the insurt is there for removal of spark plugs or to possibly not damage the end of your lug nut

Yea I think you're right it's there to prevent damage to the lug nut. My main problem with the insert is they prevent some lug nuts from fully seating on to the socket, so they need to be removed.
