    Math question!
    Working on under-edited pre-merge boots and we run into a problem.
    There's no limit to how over-edited someone can be, but the limit to how under-edited someone can be is 0.
    This means that the under-edited list biases super hard towards people who stay in the game longer.
    Someone who gets 0 confessionals over 4 episodes is likely to be 8 confessionals short, while someone who gets 3 confessionals over 6 episodes is likely to be 9 confessionals short.
    Do you guys reckon this is fine?
    Is there another metric I should look into?
    Lemme know, and thanks for watching!
    Also I gotta give a big shout out to @thoringroth on RUclips, who came up with the idea, but I couldn't find the comment until this morning, and I thought I was going crazy trying to figure out where this idea came from!

      Here's an interesting metric that I thought of, but would be incredibly labor intensive to do. How many confessionals are about other players? How many confessionals focus on talking at length about one particular tribe mate, either to describe the player's relationship with them, or why they should be voted out, or why they're just a weirdo. The most under-edited players, or the most forgettable, are the ones nobody is talking about (including themselves).

      I wonder if going more by percentages of confessionals they would have had in an even edit would work better for this. The person with 0 confs would have 0% while the one with 3 in 6 would be near 25%, which feels like a more accurate measure. And under edits shouldn't have the crazy percentage skews for first/second boots the way over edits do.

      I am not sure if there is an easy way to know this but sometimes confessional count does not reflect screen time ie they are a main character on screen but yet did not get a confessional during that time. Hunter on S46 for instance seems like he has been a big part of the season, relatively speaking considering he was on the winning tribe, but I don't actually think his confessional count is that high. Where as Liz seems both low on screen time and confessionals so far. So does it take low screen time and low total number of confessionals to be purpled? Not sure if screen time is calculated by SurvivoR (who seem amazing so if anyone has done it will be them I am sure!) .

    The math is absolutely lovely, as per usual! Makes me feel smart to understand it.
    In terms of one of the questions of the video, how do you edit the winning tribe when they aren't doing anything too exciting or dramatic. I think what you need is false winner's edits, and fun parallel actions to the more interesting tribes. Part of the reason every premier is so great is that everyone is building a shelter. You can visibly see and contrast the same task. The focus of the editors should be to find character dynamics, activities, and general little moments that they can directly put against a different tribe. Likely this can show how the tribe heading to tribal is more messy by comparison, or just less competent.

    • @HenryHickmanSurvivor
      @HenryHickmanSurvivor  2 месяца назад +3

      That sounds like a great idea! So often I feel like they don't put enough stock into winning tribes. It's part of why 41 is such a weird season. Except when they did put stock into winning tribes, like Kaoh Rong, it came across as eyebrow raising.
      No envy to the editors here! Tough job.

    a little while back, I helped to run a few games of survivor online, and while it hasn't been edited and likely never will, I do have a general idea of which tribes would likely be under-edited, or in some cases, completely purpled.
    but before those, a note about these seasons: each of these were 48 player games split initially into 4 tribes of 4, which 3 swaps before the merge (1st and 2nd are into 3 tribes, except for one time the 2nd swap was into 4 tribes, which 3rd is into 2). and with 8 total games done, that's a total of 97 tribes total, so the 10 I list are just the notable ones I remember. also, I don't remember the tribe names, only the colors, so I'll say the season and color to signify which tribes they are:
    so, in no particular order:
    1. Season 2, pre-swap yellow. This tribe's first tribal was the ninth of the season, which gives them an obvious disadvantage. I've thought about how I would edit this season if given the chance, since it was my fav to help run, and every time I realized that, outside of the winner, the person who ran this tribe with an iron fist, and 2 big characters, this tribe would be almost completely purpled. This is because, after going to their first tribal so late, they get nearly completely destroyed during the tribe swaps, with only 3 of them making the jury stage.
    2. Season 4, pre-swap yellow. Despite this pre-swap phase lasting 9 rounds of gameplay, they literally never go to tribal once. The winner coming from this tribe doesn't even help them, as she played a very under-the-radar game and she only won after being dragged to the end as a 'goat' against a bitter jury that awarded her the win out of spite.
    3. Season 4, first swap yellow. At this point, I think it's important to note that there were a lot of returnee players in this game, as getting 48 fresh players each time would be insane. Now, this tribe only went to a single tribal, and the boot was nearly identical to that booted player's previous boot round, except this time it doesn't feel as special. Nothing more to really say about it.
    4. Season 5, pre-swap yellow. I swear, there are other tribes than the yellow tribes. This tribe only went to a single tribal in episode 1, and while the winner does come from this tribe, their important relationships aren't formed until post-swap. Honorable mention to the pre-swap green tribe from this season, which also went to a single tribal, but would likely be deemed as too funny to not show a lot of.
    5. Season 5, second swap blue. While they do go to 3 of the 10 tribals in this stage, with a disaster tribe in this stage and the other tribe having the winner, they'd likely be forgotten in every episode they don't go to tribal.
    6. Season 5, third swap blue. They only attend one of the six tribals in this stage, and while the winner is on it, the other tribe features an alliance that ran the game up until then get brought down to only a single member. There is no world in which this tribe gets very much in any episode, despite featuring the entire final 5.
    7. Season 6, pre-swap red. They only go to a single tribal, and it's a unanimous vote. And this time, it doesn't even feature the winner, so they probably lose screentime there too. Not much else to say on this one.
    8. Season 7, first swap yellow. this tribe swap has a disaster tribe that goes to 4/6 eliminations, and this tribe isn't it. It is also the only tribe not to go to tribal in the double tribal round. The winner was on the disaster tribe, so not much else to say on this one.
    9. Season 8, pre-swap blue. You know the drill at this point. One tribal, all notable players for that tribal are voted out in the first two swaps. Winner not from this tribe. There isn't really much else to say on this one.
    10. Season 8, first swap yellow. One tribal, winner not on this one. Honestly, there isn't much to say about this group.
    tldr: never let me edit a season of Survivor that has a yellow tribe. they will be purpled, even with the winner on them.

      @cblazerc 2 месяца назад +2

      @@HenryHickmanSurvivor lmao. in my defense, it's not my fault they won almost every immunity.
      but yeah, to speak on that a bit, when a tribe goes on a long winning streak, there's only so much build up you can do for some boots before it becomes too obvious/repetitive.
      take season 2's yellow tribe, who's first tribal would be in episode 9. this boot would probably have a tricky edit, as the person who goes out targeted the winner. so on one hand, I can only show so much of their near constant arguments without the boot being obvious, but on the other hand, the only distraction I could do from it would be to give the winner a lot of negativity early on.
      it's a tricky line to balance, so sometimes, I can understand it being easier to just not give that tribe an edit in the first place.

    I think possibly because it seemed like we got everything I felt we needed from Post Takeo and no storylines weren't being explored that were there, as well as some fun extra content (such as Kass making the gift for Kelley's birthday).

    Love your vibes! But I honestly hate the New Era dissing just bc it's 3 tribes for 6 straight seasons. Keep in mind seasons 14-24 were basically ten seasons of 2 starting tribes only.
    And ofc at the beginning, seasons 1-Several were several seasons in a row with 2 tribes and not a lot of format changes besides location (which is a BIG change that can most of the time carry the memorability aspect of a season entirely on its own) and sometimes swaps (and later the gender division and outcasts). New Era definitely lacks in memorability, but 3 tribes each season isn't the sole reason. It's the format, the literal same location for 10+ seasons, the mostly lack of swaps, lately even the same starting tribe colors. But at the end of the day it's just decorations. And while presentation is super important, the true defining aspect of a season is, and always will be, its cast and the overall narrative.
    41 was very heavy on advantages, social commentary and Drama. Definitely the most dramatic NE season by a large margin. Also it had a very unbalanced character casting, some being very crazy and the others being very boring (Luvu minus Naseer and Sydney).
    42 to me was the balanced season: some of the socio-political moments and twist moments from 41 were there, but it was much more balanced and so was the cast. The gameplay was a balance somewhere between a tribal-line gameplay with Taku and a little bit of Vati, and a dynamic individual gameplay. It also has quite a few memorable moments like the Jenny tribal, the Tori tribal, the Lindsay-Jonathan friendship turned rivalry, and the entire F6 onwards. Aside from Jackson, Jenny and Marya, all of the characters had weight, and there wasn't anyone I didn't feel its vibes near the end.
    43 is probably the weakest in terms of narrative: I just cannot for the life of me summarize the season in a good way. It it does have its strengths though: imo the cast is VERY memorable, and very cohesive. They just mash together perfectly as a cast. The only downside to the endgame in terms of character imo was Cassidy. This season's game is extremely individual, and really lacks the focus on alliances aside from really Jesse and Cody, and some few Coco connections. That's also why Gabler's winner edit was hidden so well: his strengths were these connections, in a season edited to strongly feature individual, ever shifting game.
    Funnily enough, as much as 44 is extremely top heavy in terms of its cast balanced, it actually gives the most distinct feel to me personally, aside from 41. It truly has its own unique vibes. A highly condenced season, with a game that moved so fast that it actually rolled back around and kind of became stale in its result. However, there was a strong narrative with Tika, and fun side characters such as Matt and Frannie, Danny, and Matthew. It's biggest weaknesses is the poor editing for some of the characters such as Lauren and Heidi, it's baffling gameplay desicions, and imo the fact that the cast just doesn't mesh well together. Anyone who puts Maddi, Helen, Claire and Sarah IN THE SAME SEASON together should be fired.
    45 is by far my favorite in the New Era bc its narrative to me is NEAR PERFECTION. It goes from Lulu, to Belo, to Reba in a way that feels right and natural, each tribe was so distinct, and literally every character was great and memorable, except for Brando. It's hilarious for me to think about bc this is the one season in the NE that had a swap and honestly, it shouldn't have had it. The swap portion was by far the weakest bc it changed the narrative up in a way that felt unnatural, where it would've been better imo to straight up see Lulu destroyed even more rather than to switch things up, but it wasn't that bad.
    As of now, 46 isn't perfect. Its casting balance is somewhere between 41, 44 and 42, 42 & 45. Siga are mostly, boring. Nami are really good though and Yanu are a top tier trainwreck like their yellow counterpart a season beforehand. With how I expect things to go on, I see this season being a combination of 45's premerge, with 43's highly indivitual/small alliance based gameplay and possibly 44's underdog narrative for Yanu, although it's a little more balanced than that bc Nami are actually a very interesting tribe which is a huge feat for a tribe who lost 0 premerge challenges. Also the more boring part of Siga was voted out already so that's great. It's not gonna be perfect and the most balanced, but it's not bad at all. The narrative is gonna be messy though, which already is why I think it's lesser than 45.

    • @HenryHickmanSurvivor
      @HenryHickmanSurvivor  2 месяца назад +3

      Very true and well thought out comment. I quite like the new era, probably ranking them 45 > 42 > 44 > 41 > 43. I do think the format has gotten a bit stale, with the same format and location and vote losing and mergatory happening every season, but 45 and 46 have utilised their extra time really well to make it feel much more fleshed out.
      I do think players are starting to "solve" the new era, for lack of a better word, which makes it both better and worse. Better because players are no longer blindsided by random stuff being thrown at them, but worse because now what's the point of stuff like starting at a new beach for the final 5 (aside from cleaning up the old beach for the next season).
      At the end of the day Survivor is like pizza, even when it's a bit bland I'm still going to go overboard every time I get a chance to consume it!

    • @zoharshaked726
      @zoharshaked726 2 месяца назад +2

      @@HenryHickmanSurvivor Nice! Personally for me it's 45 > 43 (very underrated imo albeit its lacking narrative) > 42 > 44 > 41.
      The reason I have 43 over 42 and 44 is bc it has better character balance than 44 and 42's disadvantages (which are basically taken from 41 mostly) are just too strong for me to not put it below 43. If 46 keeps its current trajectory, I'd put it between 45 and 43, as the 2nd best NE season.

      Moto from Fiji got 39% of the content pre-swap, and post swap is actually #10 on the list with 28.4% of the content.
      Main reason I didn't do a proper top 10 is because Bayon original had 28.2% of the content, wich places them at 9, and that would be 3 tribes from one season.
