- Airborne Bacteria - For months, members of the McGuire family suffer from chronic illnesses, bronchitis, pneumonia and abdominal pains, fever and chills.
When Amy McGuire's respiratory ailments don't respond to any treatment, her parents become alarmed. Amy's mother watches a report on television warning of the dangers of mold in houses.

Watching this brought back an enraging memory. Toxic mold is the reason I was forced to leave my apartment and move back with my parents. Me and my roommates were regularly sick with headaches or upper respiratory infections with no explanation- until we spotted a patch of mold in our shower. We called our landlord who claimed he would take care of it. Well, it turns out the slumlord's definition of "taking care of it" was sending one of his buddies over to paint over it. We were naturally suspicious after that happened, so we got in touch with a home inspector and asked to check the place for mold.
Turns out the place had a severe mold problem that the damned landlord "fixed" by hiding it under a coat of paint every time a complaint was filed about it. The apartment was condemned and we were advised to leave as soon as possible. I couldn't find a place that would allow me to keep my cat, so I had to go to my parents' house and essentially give up my independence. Thinking about it makes me furious.
That's outrageous! I'm so sorry for your experience. Hope you and your cat are doing well
@@amberwolvers2390 I miss a lot of the freedoms I had at my old home, but I am actually grateful to have such close contact to people during the pandemic, I know a lot of people aren't so lucky. My cat is peacefully curled up at my feet as I type this.
Your landlord was totally stupid if he thought a coat of paint would fix the mold problem. Landlords like him often know about problems with their building and never mention it to their tenants. I have a severe allergy to mold and I have to make sure every home I move into is mold free
I lived in a Senior/Disabled apartment complex. AC/heater system was old and needed to be replaced but being government it just kept getting repaired. Finally mold started showing up in the apartments. A resident with a severe problem finally contacted the media and within days of a TV story, all residents were relocated.
That's what got me sick too. My parents reported mold growing in the bathroom and the first solution was to paint over it. I got sick again, coughing and all. Bad enough that I had to use the machine for asthma for a few days. As far as I know now that I moved back to my home country, that bathroom was cleaned properly.
I've lived in shitty places as an ADULT that had toxic black mold, and my lungs are permanently damaged from it. And during my time there I was sick constantly and experienced breathing difficulties and chest pains (my doctor checked out my heart and it was fine).
Mold is no joke! No matter what your age!!
This is why buildings can be condemned for mold
As soon as the infestigaters knew it was "airborne" and all the baby homes experienced "flooding" mold should've been the obvious answer
It’s the basements. Older houses with basements that are prone to moisture buildup and water damage are a real hazard....
Black mold.
I like how the reporter focused on cleaning up water under your sink - when the babies were sickened by mold growing in the building’s basement & blown in thru the building’s furnace.
Have a professional clean your furnace yearly and changing filters helps keep those mold spores out

This could have taken many more babies had there not been an acute cluster. Sadly, poverty often causes young parents to not have safe housing options. I've known a family who's kids had asthma for years & finally found a malfunctioning A/C unit & drain. Even after insurance paid to do mold remediation, the family had to move out. The kids are better but 2 have long term damage. Mold is nasty stuff!
Exactly and insurance wont pay for leaks or bad mold.
EYE OPENING! I knew that mold was dangerous but not to this extent. This was an amazing video. Thank You!

I grew up in a house in California my parents purchased brand new in the 50's. When I was about 10 I was aware that my parents were fighting mold on the insides of every room along the walls that were shared with the outside walls of the house. We tried every type of cleaner and special paints but the mold always grew back. It was black and not necessarily in damp environments. We never had any respiratory problems due to the mold. I guess we were lucky in that sense.
Mold causes a lot more than just breathing problems. Lucky indeed.
Did you grow up on the coast?
we just always sprayed it down with Clorox - it dies instantly
P
Yes mould can often grow back if the reasons for its growth is not sorted. If the walls were not well insulated or water was seeping through the mortar or the outside walls were getting to wet or drain pipes weren’t properly maintained or if there was a missed gap in the roof or whatever then dampness in the outside walls themselves (even if it’s not damp inside) can cause mould to continue to grow and keep coming back no matter how many times you clear it up. I’m glad you never got I’ll but I expect the house will continue growing mould till the reason for it is sorted.
It wasn't until I was 23 that I realized that the cause of my chronic migraines (which began when I was 14) was mold. Ironically, it wasn't the discovery of mold in my parents house that made me realize that. It was a specific dorm I lived in for almost 6 months. My migraines had always been severe, but I was practically bed-ridden. It wasn't until I moved out of that dorm that my symptoms really cleared up and I felt much better. I still had chronic migraines but they were back to manageable levels.
Then my mom decided to start renovating the bathroom that my brother and I used (which also shared a wall with my bedroom). Guess what she found behind the shower? It was a type of black mold. She never had it tested, just got to work cleaning it up. After that, the frequency of my migraines went down significantly. Oh, we moved into that house when I was 14 and it was only after we moved in that I started getting the severe migraines.
My parents also found a huge crack in the foundation when they had to remove the finished part of the basement after the basement flooded. The previous owners had hidden it behind drywall. So yeah, I treat finished basements with suspicion after that - it's a cheap way to cover up major problems with the property. Well, cheap in comparison to actually fixing the problem.
My 65 yr old sister went into an old building near the Ohio river that had been periodically flooded. She came out within 2-3 minutes and almost died within 5 days.
Never go into abandoned buildings that were flooded without respirator masks that filter out mold!!
I breaks my heart when I see a baby in that much distress and pain 😢😢😢
The title is incorrect. Stachybotrys isn't a bacteria its a fungus (more closely related to us than to bacteria).
Edit: The uploader has since fixed the inaccurate title but the mistake in the description remains.
I knew it! I knew it! But I have not watched the entire thing yet. My exact thought was a fungus, but the title was telling me that it was a bacterial infection. However, my gut said fungus, so I thought that I would scroll down and see what was being said. My kids and I kept ending up sick in the early 80's and we eventually figured out that it was from the mold!!!
This is true. The only possible event might be that a bacterial co-infection developed due to the weakened immune system by that Stachybotrys-type fungus contamination - but it is not that what they refer to in the title.
Uhh.. yes, the title is terribly incorrect. But molds are not more closely related to us than bacteria.
I think they have 'bacteria' as default for all their videos - I just watched one about Dengue fever in Hawaii and that's a virus and it was referred to as virus all through the video. Another few months and they'll have pandemic videos to watch described as killer bacteria sweeps the world.
Yes, it is an incorrect title. But please remember that everyone is human and makes mistakes, and do not blame the channel for the mistake.
It is difficult watching shows like this which involve babies.. I feel so badly for the families who went through this..
Open your windows to air out your house or unit and clean the mold with one part of vinegar and water and repeat the process. I had mold in my bedroom wall and some in my bathroom two and haven't had it since
That works with surfice mold if the home has gotten flooded the spacing iner wall is a spore factory constantly wet never can be cleaned onley way compleat remodel ushaley covers by insurance if = flood insurance nothing can be reused
How can it be detected inside walls though
The paramedics did an amazing job using job trying to get the 1st baby stable when all this happened
Great video! I learned so much & will take molds more seriously. To think that some people thinking they have an allergy to something & it could be the mold & not the dog. Thank you for sharing.😊
Sending prayers for all these babies 🙏
I’m glad the investigators were determined to be thorough. 😢
This is an old doco, and since then the CDC has not found any link between the deaths and mold exposure. Still, it pays to be careful when mold is around.
I agree..lots of hysteria on this page.
Black mold will mess with lungs 🫁. It causes severe breathing problems in those with weak immune systems.
Black mold doesn't affect everyone, either. Some people can live around it and never have a problem. Others are very sensitive to it.
@@ImaRandomFemale It's possible that air circulation played a part.
All these homes with hidden mold and other airborne diseases from very old houses. WoW! You really need to know what the air is like in a place before you move in it. Even in the new houses you need to check the air, and water conditions. That is also part of the cancer problem in the elders.
I have pointed out mold growing on walls to maintenance in the last 2 apartments I have lived in (counting this one), and they were like, "Oh, that's not a big deal". I didn't really believe them, I was sure it was beyond the spots I could see and clean myself. Now that I have seen this, i can going to push for proper testing, and also ask my doctor to check if my recent chronic symptoms could be related. They started after I moved into the last apartment, and continue here, and no one has been able to figure out what the cause is. There might not be any relationship, but I am desperate for answers. I have notices that when I visit friends or family, the symptoms are much less severe, another reason I think it has something to do with either my water supply, furnace/AC, or the leaks (as slow as they are, no one seems to think they should be a problem).
Oh yea way too many landlords, property managers, etc. brush off the effects of toxic mold bc they want to be lazy. But seriously DO push the issue bc it can and will fuck ya up
Like seriously look up the effects of toxic black mold. This documentary is old. We understand shit much better now. It can cause permanent respiratory and neurological symptoms, as well as a whole host of other problems. (Speaking as someone who has had years of it and now has horrible lungs, neurological issues, and ME - better known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. And I don't even live in the moldy place anymore. And btw the exposure was in my early to mid 20s. I went from healthy and fit, exercising regularly, very active to.... Well I spend more of my time in bed than not.)
Were you able to establish a link between your health problems and the mold?
@@robinhood4640 I have other health issues that predate this, so no. I did point out the mold to the new guy working here now, and he did say that was an issue in many of these apartments. So I don't have proof, but I do have others with the same issues around me.
I grew up in new England and a lot of our older homes get black mold as an asmatic kid black mold almost killed me I was old enough to rember that sufficating feeling of never being able to get any air it was pretty horrible.
Man so scary when I grew up in the 90s and watching these about health issues back then
That's scary. We have mold in our house and can't afford to move or get professional help with it😟
Jennifer have you tried spraying bleach on the mold ? It has worked for me
@@levelplanet3841 Thank you so much for the suggestion. We have tried bleach. Does the mold discolor the wood even after you spray bleach on it? It looks like the bleach isn't working, but I was thinking it may be that the wood is just permanently discolored from the mold.
@@jennifer7648 could be, the bleach will certainly change the color, I forgot to mention I also spayed hydrogen peroxide after I sprayed the bleach, it will foam up. it was 17 years ago and the mold has not came back, I hope you don't have mold behind the wood if the wood is the surface.
"Bleach and vinegar can both kill mold, butvinegar is much more effective for removingmold from porous materials. This is becausebleach only kills mold spores on the surface of affected materials. Vinegar will penetrate porous materials and kill the mold at the roots."
I was also going to say use vinegar...that will kill the mould, bleach will kill partly and often remove the black look but always comes back within a week....vinegar will kill it and you can also apparently make a paste with bicarbonate soda and vinegar.....I usually just use straight vinegar. Good luck ! Make sure you wear a mask if it’s bad so your not breathing it in as you clean it with what you end up using.
I moved out of my apartment just a few months before a certain flood that was all over the news happened, that place still isn't fixed 8 months later due to the water damage, I can only imagine the mold growth they had to clean out to refurbish it
I almost died from toxic mould when we replaced the windows in our home. When the old windows were taken out, the frames in several of them were black with mould. While we cleaned it up, I still had the worst asthma attack of my life. My O2 in the ER was 72% . Even went silent chest on the way to the ER. Today, I live in a medical care home and there is no mould 😊
Smokers and water damage. Immediately I thought toxic mold or second and third hand smoke.
The title IS WRONG! Bacteria & Mold are not the same, not even close. The mechanism by which they grow, live & affect the body are completely different.
How could you possibly know
My cousin works in the icu
Mold spores legit give me anixiety, i have a phobia of them. Im from Cleveland but i didnt grow up in the inner city. I remember how horrible this was though for those poor babies and mothers
I'm pretty sure all the houses I've lived in since infancy had the toxic mold in them as they were all extremely old homes rented out by slumlords. I had bronchitis as a baby and was born with coarctation of the aorta. I've always had bad coughing fits and gotten sick very easily. The worst I've gotten was a bad chest cold where I was coughing up blood.
The goodwill I worked at probably had it too or spores from clothes and housewares donations from infected homes.
The last home we lived in, my younger brother was coughing up black stuff and blood. I'm guessing those were mold spores he was coughing up, because his room was saturated with toxic mold.
Since moving into our own apartment, our health problems have been alleviated greatly. Though I still suffer from a dry barking smoker's cough (never smoked anything a day in my life) and occasional wheezing.
damn mold
20:01 finallyyyy the second i heard that the houses were connected for reasons including recently getting water damage, i was like “MOLD ITS MOLD”
I feel sad and sorry for the baby’s
I bet you anything that he is breathing the mold because he is closer to the air vent and probably his sister further away from the vent
Stachybatrus is extremely toxic. It can cause lots of health issues. The parents of the sick babies probably didn’t know they had mold problems in their homes. If they did know, they didn’t think it would cause such extreme health issues for their babies. I’d like to have a family someday, but I want to get my home tested for mold first.
Awwww so sad🙏🏽
One day when i was in high school, i was 16, i got violently ill and days later i wasn’t feeling better. I told my mom i smelled something kinda salty and sour coming from the air conditioner vent. She didn’t believe me, my health got worse, Day 4 she told me that she found black mold in our laundry room on a wet piece of clothing that was left in a sink. She said it stank badd and got rid of it quick. My health started improving once it was gone.
Some people are just more sensitive than others 😩
In NZ babies have been contracting fatal lung diseases from living in cold damp moldy homes. They are not insulated and you can feel the draughts rushing in under doors and from ceilings and windows that aren't properly sealed. Because it's become a major health issue all rental homes must be insulated and landlords were given a deadline last winter to get it done. Newer homes have built in insulation but older homes do not. I have lived in several places where my shoes and clothes went moldy in the closets. Luckily I have a small but nice flat now which is properly insulated and has good heating. It makes a big difference.
Actually air flowing through is the best preventative of mould!!!
@@mollyhorse They all tried that. It doesn't work in these old houses.
Life is constant deterioration and horror and it's unethical, irresponsible and outright cruel to bring a person into existence.
My middle son was born with Cystic Fibrosis, a terminal genetic lung disease. Unfortunately my son passed away 2014. I found out just before his passing, he had fungus growing in his lungs, which I believe was from the mold under the house. ( We don't have cellars, we have crawl spaces under our homes) When I'd complain to my husband that I smelled like mold and mildew sometimes, but never saw any, til i was.packing up to move, and changed out fixtures in the bathroom. l live with this forever.
Nowadays, doctors, landlords (and the legal system) will just gaslight you if you dare to think the black mold in your apartment is what's making you sick. It's so common. I spent most of 2014 feeling like I was fighting for my life with no idea why.
It's comforting to realize immediately that the town's name and state have not changed.
Very interesting
Nothing can make the same old world you've been surviving and hopefully thriving in all your life, become a terrifying new world quite like finding out that the 'shadow of death' has been towering over us and every where and we were only able to go forward because we didn't know that it was there. Be of good courage, and may the light that is within you illumine your path.
Perhaps we;d be better off living outside, camping permanently.
True lol
Then we would probably get bitten by a snake or get Lyme disease! Lol...you can't win!
Omg I was actually born/stayed at Rainbows Babies & Children’s hospital several years later, in 2006-( I was born prematurely and stuck in hospital for 6/7 months-) Wonder how much the staff has changed since I was last there in 2009/2010-? Yeet- Bleeding lungs sounds even scarier than asthma attack-
holy-
Urgh. So often, this series feels the need to turn the blatantly obvious into earth-shattering news.
Pulmonary haemorrhage IS massive bleeding in the lungs. So why is that a crazy diagnosis?
And when that 7th baby comes into the hospital spitting up blood, how could they not immediately conclude that it was another case of pulmonary haemorrhage? You JUST said that this sort of presenting symptom is supposed to be a once-per-year occurrence!
Maybe it’s because this is an older series or maybe I’ve watched too many crime/medical shows or maybe it’s just because my parents are both physicians...but I’m not really that impressed with these doctors’ skills of deduction
When you only have one case per year, it would be odd to have that many at once. Some doctors might never have seen it before, meaning they are inexperienced in that field and do not know the signs. You might know the signs, but remember that they might not have.
Tana Rogers
I get what you’re saying, but the thing is that that diagnosis is basically a synonym for the symptom. It’s like asking your friend if their new pet is a dog and them correcting you-Fido’s not a dog, he’s a “canine companion”
This is not a question of experience or specialties. It’s basic medical terminology. If your doctor doesn’t know that a “haemorrhage” is massive bleeding and “pulmonary” means “pertaining to the lungs,” I’d find myself a new doctor.
And yeah-they usually have one case per year like this, but this is not a usual year and they’ve already seen 6 other babies showing the SAME symptoms! Surely they should be able to connect the dots....
Parents worst fear not a mothers worsrt fear
Very good point...this annoys me too!
Please tell me this little man survived and the other babies survived. 🙏🏼
If that happened today, all those families would have no choice but to stay in their mouldy apartments, or be homeless. Housing is at a premium right now, especially rental units
Seeing babies cough up blood is horrific
Rooms must have ventilation , wood & plaster the mould still alive inside the panels so washing will not get rid of it kills on the surface.
Poor baby 🎉
They put up the wrong description.
You can kill this mold with Bleach or clear vinegar. After cleaning it off with clear vinegar or bleach, (spray the bleach or clear vinegar on from a spray bottle) then keep the humidity down in the air and it will stop growing. Then wipe down the walls with bleach or vinegar every now and then, plus run a dehumidifier to keep the humidity down in the air. Move out of the house! I'm not a mold removal expert, but this is what is says to do on some mold removal web pages. I find it works.
If you're mold problem is that bad, you don't need bleach, you need to get mold killer. Bleach will just bleach most molds. Of your mold is extensive, hire a mold company as it can be dangerous.
Bleach will only bleach it. Use a good quality clove oil, it actually kills the mold.
Bleach does not kill the spores
Bleach actually feeds mold and causes damage to our lungs too.
Yeah, you need mold mediation specialists to come in and remove the mold completely, and to put in air scrubbers. And you also need to stop the source of moisture otherwise the problem will just come back.
The mold mediation specialists for our home (previous owners lied on the disclosures-we had a mold infested home) warned us not to use bleach, because the black mold simply feeds on the moisture in the bleach. The bleach won’t kill the spores.
I was having increasing headaches soon after moving in the home, and within about 48 hours of the air scrubbers being put in, the headaches went away. Really scary how quickly the mold starts to affect you.
In Swahili..
Nakupenda mama na baba..
Trichothecene mycotoxin was probably a culprit. It can cause bleeding a number of other effects. I was poisoned by stachy and chaeetomium. I had bleeding coming from peripheral blood vessels in my nose and my facial blood vessels also were regularly bruised. I had neurologic problems because of the poisoning but I was very very lucky that this didn't get into my cerebrovascular system. Stachy poisoning is no joke and any age can be affected.
You see stories like this and wonder why some people want to weaken oversight
Wasnt this also on House MD
Back in the day a house flipper hired two poor men to clean Stachybotrys. They had no PPE and the boss offered none. They didn't get paid much for that work. Even a king's ransom wouldn't have been enough. I don't know what happened to those workers but I wouldn't be surprised if they died. Even Leviticus 14 says that if the mold or fungus persisted on the walls of the house, the place was supposed to be burnt to ashes!
Sometimes to companies where they make baby formula they could be tainted some kind chemicals that wind it up inside the formula
That's what I was thinking!!
No baby that's having such severe breathing problems as they're describing cries as constantly strong and loud as they're showing.
Their "re-enactment" writers either didn't do their research, or someone wanted a more dramatic portrayal.
It is sad that inner city people don't know that surfaces need to be cleaned and maintained so mold doesn't grow...
Inner city people? 😂 Smh 🤦🏽♀️
Wow Now I'm very Scared of Mould😮😮
When i was cleaning for an elderly gentleman and his disabled son i found what appeared to be mould growing on the ceiling above the elderly mans shower and over the shower vent what immediately concerned me was 2 weeks later the real estate agents incharge of the unit just painted over the mould like wtf! You dont just paint over mould it only masks the issue!
I told my boss who sent me to clean that this mould might be inactive but painting over it will still leave the home to be infested by the mould my boss was so angry about the outcome!
does anyone know the year this event took place? I don't believe it happened in 2020 because of the quality of the video.
Was this when glass shard’s were in his formula
I was in 2nd grade!
This case isn't about "airborne bacteria". It isn't about "bacteria" at all. Derp.
Maybe there's a mold inside the vent and that's why the baby's breathing it in getting him sick young stick there's got to be something inside that house
It's very distracting that they're wearing gloves during the re-enactments of the lab work.
And if the area where the girl said that they live at that there's mold has bacterias the houses you know the babies could be getting sick by the mold have bacterias
The one woman drives to a business and waits for an ambulance? she was already in her car why didnt she just drive directly to the hospital instead??
They could help stabilize the baby inside the ambulance. Medical equipment
The formula someone spicked
Could the formula the babies take could it be tainted bad milk tainted their poisoned
It'd be helpful if something as simple and inexpensive as a smoke detector but for airborne toxic spores was available for homes. Help let people know before situations became critical, especially when it's not readily visible.
thats a smart idea
There are detectors like that, but I believe they have to be turned on. They're not automatic like smoke or c02 detectors. Check out some episodes of "Another Dirty Room" by Dan Bell to see how they work.
I knew the answer from the very beginning the moment it said home invader I new it would be black mold
Shouldn't the lab techs be wearing gloves and face masks?? But watching makes me wonder about my apartment complex. So sad that so many infants passed away. 😢😢😢😢
32:21 performed a what?
Bacteria?..no mold.
How can y’all watch this I’m so annoyed over all the crying 😂
Just another problem people didn't have when they didn't have modern conveniences--not that I want to live without indoor plumbing!
Why are these “lab techs” not wearing gloves ???? Re- enactments should be true to life. Too many of these are not.
Mould will do it
It just seems like some sort of a mold issue, babies are so fragile and molds can do a lot of harm even to adults. That whole point about water damage is screaming at me even now, though I have't yet watched this fully.
Apparently right then. We had issues with mold in my native country because some damned fools thought that the way in some southern nations folk build roofs would look cool and new for a style some several decades ago. And then those flat roofed buildings with all the snow in the winter turned into horrible mold traps - including a lot of schools that have been slowly replaced, while kids study in replacement locations. A flat roof is nothing but an invitation for issues - so yea - the way this story began kinda said enough, even if the water likely arrived to the buildings and neighborhood differently. If you are mysteriously ill or someone in your family is - make sure that building has not got a hidden monster to it. People aren't always honest about such things cause it reduces the property value like massively - so yea - before you buy a location, have it tested - that costs less than the losses on the investment - never mind all the related health issues. In Europe one does not end up in trouble over health care cost, but knowing how much my relatives have to pay for stuff like that in US - yea, not testing the home is really a foolish step when finding a new place to live at. The only builder that I know who hasn't had such issues for homes he made is my own father cause he refused to make roofs of that style back then - or generally building styles made with tilted roofs. That how ever assures nothing, if the water got in some other way. Even perfectly well built a location can turn bad when the people living at the property have not taken care about the place the way one should or shorted out water damage in appropriate manner.
When you see the bigger picture of flooding around the world this past year and the number of people who have died from this virus? People who have been told that they have a virus that they are saying came from China, but the whole world has been experiencing extreme effects of rain and flooding and mold issues from the world weather conditions and the truth is that the people are not aware that the world is a over populated and the truth is that people are being told to self isolate themselves and the truth is people are dying from a sudden change in the world global economy reset.
Hey, my parents have HUGE deposits of this mold all over the place. Basement, attic, ceiling, walls, you name it. They don't care. They just live there. I got out of there and took my bird with me. I freaking lived with a 3x3 foot patch in my bedroom. There was a 6x6 patch in the bathroom and the rest of the ceiling was also moldy.
I'd call health inspection on them
@@jenniferda8318 Well, their house would be condemned. They finally got the roof fixed and I believe it has helped. No more active mold.
