My cabinets are almost identical, in my apartment and if you think I'm climbing chairs and step stools to get up there, you're crazy.
You have to be very careful of what's kept above eye level because accidents happen. The cord to the blender got stuck behind the fridge and the heavy glass unattached and clocked me in the head. Luckily, the hospital is a block away and at 1:30 AM, I walked to the hospital. There was a welt the size of an egg, bruising and a concussion. Also, things not only get dusty up there but greasy depending on where your stovetop is. It does accumulate. If you can find space, lower shelving is better and if you do put things that high up, keep it light.
There are good ideas and not so good ideas.

if they weren’t such a hassle to maintain, I’d love to have a small section of the kitchen with open shelving. Also, the baskets at the top of the overhead shelving look cute, but again, bec they have no lids, dust will get in 😔

Yes, you need storage with lids.

Not dust GREASE . great idea but need a lid like you said . Maybe a beautiful basket to look visually appealing and hide a plastic storage with lid inside

Over the door storage is also a lifesaver in small apartments. I have an over the door laundry hamper and shoe rack, and both save so much floor space.

Poverty? Think again. These NY apartments are on the average 3000 for a studio .

Just curious...these apartments in NYC that people are able to renovate aren't rentals I assume? Bc my apartment can't be changed that much. If I even paint a new color I have to repaint it to the original when I move out

Not difficult to repaint . Well worth it imo . I am a renter since 18 to current 53. I have always found a way to be happy in my space

Yeah, same thought here. She kept saying I just screwed it into the wall. She said that like ten times. Screwing nails into walls are going to cost her or she will not get her deposit back al I g with paying a bunch of money to the landlord when she moves out. I am pretty sure these apartments in NYC, have so many renovations done that they MUST have different rules for different tenants. I usually lived in brand new/fairly new apartment complexes that were near my college. The rules were so strict that they would charge you fees for any tiny issue. However, I know that the places were new, and their rules were just over the top. Older places in NYC must have different rules for renovations.

@@fishercourtpeople in NYC often live in the same apartment for many years or even decades, so they’re not as worried about the security deposit. At least that’s how it used to be; times may have changed now.

Open shelves are gorgeous but you have to be organized to pull it off

What happens as the kids get older and need more space? You can't cram that many older kids/teens into one room and expect them to be happy.

Everyone needs some space for themselves but it doesn't have to be a lot. Many kids grow up sharing rooms and are perfectly happy.

I’m pretty sure child services would check them out with three of those children living in such a tiny room. That’s not something I would share through apartment therapy, even just to earn money and get marketing for your side hustle/influencer work. I feel bad for those children.
