  • Returning from the ‪@HyundaiWorldwide‬ dealership after the software “fix” for negligently not including the industry standard immobilizer technology that led to dangerous and innumerable Hyundai and Kia thefts. ‪@USDOTNHTSA‬ is not doing their job allowing a software fix for a hardware problem in millions of Hyundai and ‪@kia‬
This video briefly explains the software update and tests it. Interestingly the immobilizers were not left out of cars sold during the affected years that were sold outside of the US.

On August 29th, 2023 a federal judge has denied the approval of a class action settlement of 200 million dollars and software update as insufficient.
In an Aug. 11 letter, the attorneys general of six states and the District of Columbia urged Judge Selna to require automakers to install antitheft technology known as engine immobilizers in all theft-prone Hyundai and Kia vehicles, possibly in combination with a vehicle buyback program, in place of the update and cash payments.
    Stay tuned.

My mother owns a '13 elantra and it was stolen about 2 months ago(didn't have the update) and the police were no help other than just marking the plates stolen and that's it. We managed to track it down and recover it ourselves since she left airpods in the back. She now parks in front of the apartment complex cameras with a steering wheel lock. She's getting the update next week however they said arming the alarm works with the fob.. which no longer works and she has to use the key at the door and a different key to start it(OEM key nolonger works since the key cylinder was replaced). I wonder how this would work

I had this update installed on my Kia Forte about a month ago, and someone tried to steal my car about a week ago. It’s still in the shop from the damage. They smashed my rear window, stripped the ignition and did a lot of damage to my car, but it was in the same spot where I left it so apparently they weren’t able to start my car. I don’t know if that’s because of the update or because I have a manual transmission and the thieves didn’t know how to start a stick shift, but somehow they weren’t able to start my car (I’d imagine that someone who knows how to steal a car knows how to drive a stick shift, but there are mostly teenagers who are stealing people’s cars, so you never know).

Mechanic advise: remove the fuse for "ignition" under the fuse dash when the car is completely off and key removed. The car will never crank even for the owner with the key.

Do Kia and Hyundai’s anti theft system work the same exact way?? I just got mine a month and a half ago. I did test mine but didn’t try others cuz my dad was all like “why is your alarm going off?”😒

Remember, if you lock it with the door lock switch or the key, you have no protection. Lock it with the key fob only.

I have a 2017 Kia Sedona, had the anti lock fix put in
Exactly 2 weeks to the day after getting my car out of a parking garage, I was driving home on an expressway when my steering wheel started freezing up so did my breaks, everything came On my dashboard. I .managed to get off a came to a slow stop on service rd
Tow truck mechanic said my alternator was low
Took it back to Kia, who basically wanted to overcharge me and claimed this was nothing to do with the anti lock device. I took it to my mechanic he put a new alternator in and that lost power, finally put a second one in and the car seems to be driving ok now but it's a worry driving it now

One other note. My vehicle has Blue link. This service can track and I believe slow stolen vehicles. A subscription to this service should be included at no cost to the affected vehicle owners.
